  1. I have a soft spot for Grumman's cats. From the cute Wildcat, to the butch Hellcat and all the way to the flashy Tomcat, I think the company has built some of the best looking fighter aircraft in history. Over the summer I started a double-build of the venerable Hasegawa kits of both these planes. It's taken quite some time to finish them, but here they are. Both kits are built straight out of the box, apart from the Sidewinders, which come from the Hasegawa Weapons Set III. Colors are Gunze acrylics and Tamiya white primer. In particular the Tiger is really a candidate for a new tooling, it has raised panel lines, most of which disappear after you have taken care of the fuselage seams. Apart from that it goes together very well, I only needed some filler on the intakes, which are a slightly dubious fit. The main landing gear is a bit of a vague fit, but doable with some trail and error. The decals had yellowed but I was lucky to get another set from a fellow BM-er. Unfortunately no aftermarket decals are available for this kit. It's decidedly underrepresented by both kit manufacturers and aftermarket companies. The Cougar is slightly newer and has the traditional Hasegawa panel lines, very fine, a bit too fine on the underside, I struggled to get the wash to adhere to them. This kit also needed some filler around the intakes and the rear wing to fuselage joint, which requires quite a lot of filler to smooth out. Apart from that, it's an easy build. This was also an older boxing and in this case the decals had both yellowed and cracked. The Cougar also isn't a popular aftermarket subject, but PrintScale do a nice sheet with some Panthers and Cougars, which I used. I believe Sword do a modern tooling of the Cougar but as far as I'm aware not the fighter version. I'm very happy to have these lovely 50s cats in my collection. Hopefully we'll get some modern toolings of both, which will be the perfect excuse to build some more of them.
  2. Does anyone know what the photo etched parts on the left is used for? There seems to be three rings of PE, pluss two tiny parts that looks like maybe a bolt attached to each small elongated metal plate. Btw, the box I got, looked nearly identical to the image, only change was that the milled part seen in the image, a ring to be fitted closer to the "root" of the barrel, was milled together with the barrel and wasn't a separate part.
  3. I am having a difficult time finding metal tracks for this Tamiya 1 Late version kit I have in 1:35 scale, there seems to be various models, and it looks like the tiger tank versions had some differences to the wheels over time, I just don't know if those differences are cosmetic on a model or of the differences are more important that than fitting wise. Does anyone know if the following product from Friulmodel (ATL-06) will match the wheels and such? Here is an image of a product I think might match:
  4. Having had a look around, I couldn't find evidence of a recent Tiger Sqn GB (correct me if I'm wrong). I think it's time to have another, and I propose that we include not only NATO but any squadron anywhere, anytime that's had a tiger as its emblem. Keeping in mind that a number of ex-WarPac airforces are now proud NATO members, I think it could be interesting. Note that there will be no requirement to do a full-on Tiger Meet themed aircraft - subtle fin-top stripes or a badge on the nose, as per in-service airframes would be acceptable. What say you all?
  5. Hi all This is the start of what will in all probability be a very long blog. I bought the Trumpeter King Tiger when it first came out and have been itching to make a start ever since. I recently bought another one off evilbay as it contained a lot of the extra parts I've been looking at adding. It's also the Porsche turret version, which appeals a bit more than the Henschel turret. The second one had been started but only a few parts had been glued in place and the ejector pin marks had been filled in on the hull floor/sponsons. All done to a good standard too This will be something I dip in and out of in between other builds, otherwise I'll burn out and get fed up if I try to complete this any other way..! So far I've been cleaning up the roadwheels, suspension parts and getting to grips with the road ahead. Here's progress so far; Not a lot to show here. The sidewalls of the interior aren't glued in place as yet - lots of work to do on those, removing bits etc before committing to glue. Hope you all find this an enjoyable blog
  6. Hello, One of my finished models. Trainer aircraft Aero L-29 squadron from the tiger. AMK kits, masks own production
  7. This is my first armour post here, Tamiya's 1/35 Tiger 1 (Afrika). Lots of mods to portray an initial Tiger 1 of the 501st Battalion in Tunisia, AFV workable early Tiger tracks (plastic), photo etch screens, and painted in a "troppen 1" scheme of RAL 8000 and RAL 7008 using Tamiya acrylics, Hope you like. I wasn't sure how much could be seen through the screens, so I scratch built fuel tanks, rads, and fans - as it turns out not much is visible - Oh well ... Comments always welcome, thanks for looking, Colin

  9. Hi Folks, inspired by a visit to MCAS Yuma a few years ago and after having watched VMFT-401 'Snipers' at Yuma I decided to go for an F-5. The kit is the AFV ROCAF boxing with the platypus nose, so I elected to use Fightertown decals 'Adversary Ghosts' and make one in the colours of VFC-13 'Saints'. Its a lovely kit with very crisp detail. The kit was finished with enamels as Xtracolour make the darker blue and the rest were Humbrol.
  10. This project was made as part of the D-Day Group Build. This is my first ever diorama and it's made up with a lot of other firsts. First Typhoon, Panther and Tiger kits, first tank(s) for many, many years, first plane kit in flight, first use of a Prop Blur, first use of aftermarket decals (for the Typhoon) and first 1/72 figures. Nearly everyone who contributed to the WIP thread helped with ideas for the building of various elements of the project so a big thank you to them all - it wouldn't have been possible without the help of the BM team. Also it was seeing Kallisti's Typhoon base that got me thinking about doing a diorama - so thank you to Kallisti for the idea. Typhoon: Airfix 1/72 Mk.IB Typhoon (new tool version) - MN526/TP-V - No.198 Sqn., 123 Wing, 84 Group, 2 TAF B10/Plumetot, France - July 1944. Panther: Dragon 1/72 Ausf G with Zimmerit, no. 135 of 12 SS Pz, Tiger I: Dragon 1/72 Ausf E with Zimmerit, no. 131 of sSSPzAbt 101 German and British troops from Ceasar Miniatures Baseboard: Softwood, Sundela, MDF, filler and various leftover scenic materials from model railway projects made a long time ago. The WIP can be found here The RFI for the Typhoon can be found here The RFI for the two tanks can be found here Time: early evening, July 1944 - Location: somewhere northwest of Normandy This last photo shows the actual diorama and the background I used to give it depth. The background is actually the display shelf I made for my Spitfire builds but it seemed to work well as a backdrop - I thought it would look better than just a plain wall. Although this project is finished as far as the D-Day Group Build is concerned I've still got some ideas for developing this diorama further but I'm going to make a couple of Spitfires first! Thank you for looking. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix
  11. Hi friends here are some pictures of my Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger II Ausf. B in 1/72 scale. This kit was done early this year. The photos were taken last weekend, i hope you like it. It was done before i started to use PE parts, may this one will have some upgrades at some time, like the Challenger, the Revell Tiger is a pleasure to build.

  13. Hi, here are some pictures from my AFV-Club Tiger I in 1/48 scale. Its a beautiful kit, with great details, like the petite molded on Zimmerit and the meshes over the engine louvers. Build OOB in just a few days and was finished on new years eve 13/14. The paint work was done freehend, with my airbrush and a dark wash from acrylics and some drybruhing for the weathering was applied. The decals were fragile and most of them didn t make it on the Tiger :-(. Hope you like it Cheers Bernd
  14. Hi all, I'm not big into Armour, don't know my tanks well so would like some advise and what you think to this idea. Firstly, I would like an R/C Tiger tank, on a budget, I know this does not bode well, but hear me out.... The R/C is not to go blasting everywhere but more as a novelty (it will sit in my display case most of the time), the Tiger has to look like a Tiger (so long as it looks OK, it does not have to be rivit correct), It HAS to be a Tiger, early or mid. King etc is no good, it's an Tiger early or mid or nothing. But most importantly I do not have an endless budget, less than £200 is my total budget. Soooo, my thoughts.... Purchase a Heng Long Pro Tiger 1 (with the metal tracks), more for sturdiness, then purchase a Taigen Tiger 1 upper hull. Add or rework any areas that I can, add a few scratch built bits Re-Spray the whole thing. Total purchase price will be in the order of... £109 for the Tiger £59.49 for the upper works. What are your thoughts? Can I make a decent looking Tiger out of this? As I say it is novelty factor for the R/c so it's not the biggest part of the project so the fact it is not scale speed etc is no matter, not that the gears clank etc etc.
  15. In 2013 I managed to finish a fire truck and an astronaut. This year seems to have been the year of the Spitfire with a few 1/72 tanks and a Mk.1B Typhoon thrown in! The year started with the idea of working on my model making skills in order to do justice to the Eduard Mk.IX Spitfire that I planned to make at some point during the year. My practicing began with some 1/72 Spitfires from Airfix and Italeri. Airfix 1/72 Mk.Ia Spitfire (new tool) There are more photos of this Mk.Ia available in the RFI section which can be found here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234955941-172-airfix-mkia-spitfire-new-tool-photo-heavy/ Airfix 1/72 Mk.IIa Spitfire (new tool) Italeri 1/72 Mk.IX Spitfire There are more photos of both of these two Spitfires above in the RFI section here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234959818-two-172-spitfires-airfix-mkiia-and-italeri-mkix/ The latter two Spitfires were built as part of the 'Less Than a Tenner' GB where I also made the Revell 1/144 Mk.Ia Spitfire: This is my current avatar picture. I then thought I ought to practice on a 1/48 Spitfire but a much cheaper one! - Revell's Mk.XVI: There are more photos of the Revell Mk.XVI here in the RFI section: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234969553-another-148-revell-icm-mkxvi-spitfire-diorama-b-w-photos-added/ When I actually got around to building the 1/48 Eduard Mk.IXc Spitfire (late), as part of the D-Day GB, it ended up looking like this: More photos of the Mk.IX Spitfire can be found in the RFI section here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234967960-eduard-spitfire-lfmkixc-ml135-yod-no401-squadron-as-flown-by-jerry-billing-on-7th-june-1944-b-w-photos-added/ Also as part of the D-Day GB I made a couple of German tanks and a Mk.IB Typhoon. Airfix 1/72 Mk.IB Typhoon (new tool): The RFI for the Typhoon can be found here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234968242-airfix-172-mkib-typhoon-new-tool-version-mn526tp-v-france-july-1944-b-w-photos-added-including-one-from-the-sarge/ 1/72 Dragon Panther Ausf G: 1/72 Dragon Tiger 1 Ausf E: The RFI for the two tanks can be found here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234968244-two-german-big-cats-in-172-dragons-panther-ausf-g-and-tiger-i-ausf-e-both-with-zimmerit-b-w-photos-added/ Once complete I put the three above into a bit of a diorama: The RFI for the diorama can be found here where there are a lot more photos!: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234968243-somewhere-in-france-july-1944-typhoon-panther-and-tiger-in-172-b-w-photos-added/ My final completion for the year is Airfix's old (and I mean old!) 1/76 Tiger 1. I bought it thinking it would be lot better than it turned out to be in the box but I ended up upgrading it a bit and I was rather pleased with the completed model. There's a few spares included from my D-Day tank builds and some scratch built parts as well: I haven't done an RFI post for this Tiger yet as I intend to make a base for it soon but the WIP can be found here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234971585-airfix-176-tiger-i-yeah-that-old-one-upgraded-a-bit-update-291214/ My current project is to build two 1/48 Mk.Vb Spitfires so they should be my first completions in 2015. I'd also like to thank everyone who stopped by my build threads this past year and supported my builds either with advice, encouragement or, on a couple of occasions, spare parts! None of my builds would have turned out like they did without this Britmodeller community - so THANK YOU! Kind regards, Stix
  16. Hello everybody!!! Now, this is my third tank I've ever done, and, being a very young modeller (not telling shush shush) the standard obviously isn't AMAZING like some of the beautifully constructed kits various other people on the forum have made. Enough of that, here's what I built; Make: Forces Of Valor Scale: 1/72 Model: German Tiger I (WW2 Obviously) Other Specs: 504th Schwere Heeres Panzer Abteilung Date: Spring 1943, Tunisia. The build was really easy for me, perfect. The painting - Well the kit came with no decals so I just painted normally + heavily weathered with some recently purchased paints as I've just got into modelling - still a beginner + can't really name anything I'm good at but I still like it Yeah so here: On la bookshelf ^ From the front ^ Hope all the fellas like it, my first tank + not up to a standard of ANY kind due to terrible lack of budget, skills and time. I tried my best - still enjoyed making it though - very quick build and I hope to do some more soon Ordered MasterBox WW1 Male Mk1 Tank to get started on next, lets hope I don't destroy the poor kit as much as I did with the Tiger ey?
  17. Panther: 135 of 12 SS Pz, Tiger: 131 of sSSPzAbt 101 These are the first tanks I've built since who knows when. I'm pretty certain I must have built one or more when I was young (but I can't remember) and there's been none since. If I did make any they wouldn't have been made or painted properly. Both these German tanks were made as part of a diorama for the D-Day Group build. I need to say a big thank you to Sgt.Squarehead, Shermaniac and Brews for their assistance with choosing suitable tanks. Both tanks have some additions to what's provided in the box - the Panther has a spare wheel (mounted on the turret) plus an improved shovel and the Tiger has track links (mounted on the turret) both kindly sent me by Sgt.Squarehead. The Tiger also has the longer towing cable mounted on the side of the hull, which I fabricated from bits of left over cable from both Dragon kits and ends from the Panther kit. Both kits were really enjoyable to make and everything is brush painted with Humbrol and Revell acrylics applied with hairy sticks. The WIP can be found here Photos of the diorama they form part of can be found here Panther: Tiger: A few photos of them together: And a few from the diorama: The RFI of the Typhoon in the diorama can be found here. Thank you for looking. My RFI for another D-Day build, of Jerry Billing's Mk.IX Spitfire, can be found here. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix
  18. 19. First post in the forum and I hope this is the correct place. Italeri has announced 4 model kits and later 1 diorama set around popular WOT (World of tanks) online game. http://shop.italeri.com/Category/198-world-of-tanks.aspx Actually they are old kits reboxed. But as a WAO player there, the decal paper they come with, is a good reason for me to buy, to replicate the tanks I play there.
  20. After a little break from modelling I was going to start a massive 1:24 Fw190, but I don't think I'd finish it before the end of this group build, so I thought I'd pull this one of the stash. Dragon 1:35 Tiger Late Production 6253 Beware, the mediocre artwork hides the monster kit - Yes, the box is full. There's a few sprues. And a load of brass bits, photo etch, a turned barrel and even a bucket to hang off rear. Should be fun!
  21. Pics taken by Darwin at the Combat Air Museum in Kansas.
  22. Something a bit different: http://www.bavariantigers.com/2014/06/04/the-birth-of-the-first-complete-painted-tiger-fighter-worldwide/ Cheers, Andrew
  23. Can any of you point me in the direction of a cheapish source for a pair of Tiger or Panzer IV hulls/chassis in 1:144, probably should be the early marks, without the sloping armour. Looked at world of tanks(Takara), Can.DO(Dragon) and CGD, but it seems a shame to fork out about £10 a go for them only to butcher them to go under a Leopold 28cm railway gun. My orginal find of diagrams of the K5 on tracked vehicles would seem to have suggested a panzer IV hull just by the number of road wheels, no someone has pointed me to another drawing showing what the K5 might look like mounted on a pair of Tiger tank hulls. http://modelbox.free.fr/photoscopes/K5/K5_Tiger.JPG
  24. Hi, I'm looking for help obtaining a scan or webpage address that has assembly instructions for the Trumpeter 1/35 00378 Geschutzwagen Tiger for 17cm K72 kit. I won one on eBay that was being sold minus instructions. Usually the Hobby Search website would save the day, but not this time. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10062489 Only a couple of pages with no assembly instructions. I'm having trouble getting help via the Trumpeter website but will persevere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
