  6. Hi everyone This here is another project I've revived whilst still working on my M1A2 TUSK, an M60A1 I've had for a number of years but never completed. Compared to some of those abandoned kits, this one was in fairly good nick, painted up and sporting no damage. I even had the parts available to finish the build. I resprayed its camo and touched up it, then painted up the figures and added the decals. Clear-coated, applied some Mig wash and then sealed it with matt varnish (which has given it a slight fading, like the appearance of a very fine dust, particularly on the crew). I'm still considering adding some pigments to it, possibly to replicate the aftermath of a beach landing (I do have some beach sand pigments). I have the old Tamiya US soldiers kit as well, which I've also painted up for a late 80s scenario, to go along with it. I also have a plan to pick up some more stowage to add to it, since the stowage I have I spent painting in ACU for my Abrams. Anyway, enough waffling. Bring on the pics Gaz
  7. Hello! I'm a Fairly recent returnee to to the hobby, and was keen to try out all these new techniques. Please excuse this rusty Chieftain, I got one of those Tank Art books, and it's easy to get carried away practicing all those techniques. I could say it was a very lucky range target, but I don't suppose they'd leave the baskets and GPMG on... Anyway, I had fun making it (Apart from the tracks, that wasn't fun) and learnt a lot about chipping, oil paint and such. Cheers!

    Anti-Slip Surfaces

Hi all. I've just picked up a Tamiya 1/35 M1A2 SEP TUSK II (hurricane of acronyms there ). Was meant to be for Christmas but...I can't wait that long Anyway. I read over on Armorama - specifically this article, http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewtopic&topic_id=50656&page=1- about adding anti-slip surfacing to Abrams kits that lack it. The substance mentioned, Rust-Oleum Terracotta spray, seems to do the job quite well. Homebase apparently stock it, but I wondered if anyone else had tried it. The article is from an American modeller, and while the stuff at Homebase matches the name, it isn't mentioned as being textured in the description, so I wonder if it is exactly the same. If it lacked texture it would obviously be a little pointless Has anyone else used it, either on a model or for its intended purpose? Edit: I've recently spotted some of that Tamiya Tarmac texture paint. Anyone know if that would be suitable anti-slip stuff, or would it be too thick? Cheers, Gaz.
  10. Tah-da! 1/76 Matilda is done! Base also done - Caunter colours, El-Alamein - slightly off historically - no Caunter camo left by El-alamein time, but, artistic licence :-) Enjoy - crit always welcome! Maybe too much weathering....not sure!

  12. Hi all, This is the first armoured vehicle i've built in years! After a trip to the Somme in 2014 I got the bug for WW1 subjects so picked this kit up in a LMS. Its a pretty crude kit, no idea of any accuracy issues but it was fun to build and weather, just need to sort a base out for it now! Cheers Simon

Caliber: 85 mm Type of gun: rifled Sight: telescopic TSh-16 Machine gun: 2 x 7.62-mm DTM HISTORY T-44 was created in 1943-1944. Though the T-44 did not see combat in World War II, it was issued to tank brigades for training purposes. It was never shown publicly during military parades and pictures were never shown publicly until the secrecy was dropped. T-44 was being developed in order to create a tank that would have better combat and technical characteristics than the T-34. SPECIFIC FEATURES The original intention was to retain the high mobility and speed of a T-34 and to provide the T-44 with heavier armour protection against large-caliber tank guns. This was accomplished by adding thicker armour but reducing the internal volume of the hull. Although the T-44 used many components of the T-34, it had a new hull, and a modified model diesel engine, suspension and transmission. THE MAIN DIFFERENCES FROM THE T-34-85 T-44’s hull had a simplified construction without fenders. The hull of the T-34-85 had T-shape cross-section while T-44’s hull had a rectangular shape. The height of the t-44’s hull was reduced to 300 mm. The new V-44 12-cylinder 4-stroke diesel engine, developing 500 hp, was a more powerful version of the T-34's model V-2 with a new planetary manual 5-speed transmission system, filtration system, improved cooling system, horizontally placed water and oil pumps and an improved fuel system which increased its power output. It was the first tank design to feature transverse engine placement, which made it smaller than a standard T-34 and gave the crew more space. The hull upper front armour (glacis plate 60°) thickness was doubled to 90 mm. Even though it was more heavily armoured, the weight of the T-44 was the same. The tank's crew did not include a radio operator/machine gunner. This space was used for ammunition stowage area, transferred from the floor of the fighting compartment. As a result were improved working conditions. The bow machine gun and driver's hatch switched positions on the glacis plate. One of the machine guns was mounted to fire through a tiny hole in the center of the glacis plate. Because the tank's crew did not include a radio operator/machine gunner, the driver operated this light machine gun. The T-44 had a compact torsion-bar suspension instead of the T-34's Christie coil springs.
  14. (Udate jan 13th This tank has officially been saved and is now available to view in the diorama 'Lost in France') Hmmmm. Brimming with confidence after my 1st build and diorama for many years, I immediately set about tackling Tamiya's 1/35th Churchill MkVII tank. All was going well. I had the turret, hull, wheels etc all assembled and then airbrushed base coats, oversprayed with dark green. Then I applied the decals. That's when things started going wrong. I used micro set solution. This left a satin sheen on the otherwise pristine finish. No matter, I thought. This will not show after a coat of matt varnish and all the weathering. Only, the matt varnish dried gloss. Now I know that in reality British AFVs painted dark green have tended to have a satin or even gloss finish (I'm thinking of the Saladin and Saracen in particular) so maybe I am being a bit picky, but I just HATE a gloss finish on models. And no amount of cleaning and soaking would get the blooming varnish off! So it looked as though the model was a 'binner'. Being a binner, and with nothing to lose, I wondered if I could scrape the varnish and paint off. A labourious and fiddly task. I did a test scrape, which worked, but to scrape a whole model? I have to confess something now... I am an old-school modeller, having been a school child when I last made models and as such, I still use enamel paints. Soaking an enamel-painted model in thinners doesn't do the plastic any good! So I decided not to bother. I thought some more, and figured that rather than bin it, I could use the Churchill as a piece of diorama scenery.... blow it up and tip it into a water-filled ditch. I could submerge a whole side of the tank in water, and only have to worry about 'fixing' the exposed surface. I could cover the whole thing in dried mud and hide a lot of it with bankside vegetation. So, today, I set about the task and attacked the model with 'dark earth weathering powder' applied in several washes of varying dilution and also applied 'dry' to wet surfaces. This has covered a lot of the 'glossy' patches, but not all. There are areas such as the side skirting and turret sides which still shine horribly (well, at least to my eye they do) More weathering powder will cover this up, I have no doubt, but I will end up with a tank ENTIRELY covered in mud. Still, it's better than nothing. Anyway, I am now wondering what I can do to 'fix' the 'dried mud'. Weathering powder comes off when handled too much, or rubbed with a brush and I'm not sure I want to risk another coat of the so-called matt varnish! Can anyone suggest the best thing to do now, and also what was my mistake in the first place? Using enamels, I've never bothered varnishing my models before. I just used to wet brush and dry brush them once the enamel was properly dry. Was I actually mistaken to varnish this model at all? Pics to follow shortly. Thanks, in anticipation, Badder.
  15. Hello. I am planning to build a vihor tank. Since there are no kits for this tank on the market I ll have to modify the T-72M 1/72 Revell kit or some other. The vihor tank was partially based on soviet T-72. The frame is the same, the number of wheels, the gun and some other smaller parts such as headlights and machine gun on the top of the turret. Other parts are different such as the turret, side rubber skirts, mud fenders, upper plate on the hull and other things. The biggest challenge will be the turret modification and I don't know how to pull that out. I have no experience in scratchbuilding so I ll need a lots of advises. One of my plans was to buy a resin modification set for the M-95 degman tank which is based on vihor but I ll have to cut a lot and still wont have that I need. I ll post you the pictures of vihor and then you'll be able to tell me what to do in order to convert the T-72 tank into this one> THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

  17. Some people will call me a Traitor for abandoning the sky, others will welcome me to the 'real modelers' fraternity... ...but I will build my Itty Bitty Train! Ok so it's only a Saddle Tank but I'm still holding out on finding a cheap Class 08 or 31 (or maybe others) that remind me of the days of wild abandonment - ie childhood growing up near Bescot. Problems/questions/requests: I lost the front cab wall whilst moving house, fortunately all other pieces appear present. This shouldn't be too much an issue apart as its basically a flat wall, curved top, 2 round window holes and the odds & sods attached to it. This is where the problems arise as pix seem few and far between. Is there a walkaround anywhere, or even decent internals. So far most pix cover just the upper half with nothing at firebox/floor level. I would even be happy and very grateful if someone could post pix of the relevant Airfix part for me copy, to which I can then add obvious bits from what little I have found. It certainly won't be a superdetail job, and I still have to clear a hole for it on the workbench, however by getting started maybe it won't be shelved for lack of 1 part. ... Must find a small base and a single length of track. Be nice to have it looking a little less forlorn as I find locos off the rails quite sad ... Thx in advance. D.

  23. This is the first tank I'm intending to build for this GB and it represents a number of firsts for me: It will be my first 1/48 AFV build (having made two 1/72 and two 1/76 tanks), my first Hobby Boss kit and my first American tank. With regards the tank itself: 1,400 M4A3s with Ford GAA V-8 engines and fitted with 76mm M1 guns, were manufactured by Fisher Tank Arsenal and Detroit Tank Arsenal between March 1944 and April 1945. I haven't decided yet which version I shall make mine as but cannot wait to get started. Kind regards, Stix
  24. Hi, it seems, i can t stop building Shermans. While german AFVs are quite often here, i didn t found another british Sherman Mk.III, especially in 1/72. The kit is on the same quality level, like the M4A1 but if you want to use the very nice decals from the box, you need other road wheels. Dragon supplied the later closed wheels, but i need the open spoked wheels. A Trumpeter M4 kit came to help. Trumpeter has two versions of wheels inside the box. Kit bashing is easy in theory, in "real live" there can be problems. I started with the suspension. everythink was o.K but Trumpys wheel bogeys are too narrow for the Dragon kit. I used, to make "space" the little number plates on the sprues. Made photos of it and the sprues from the kit and from the Trumpeter kit, sorry for the bad quality and most of the progress pics are unusable, thanks to bad light conditions and my mistake photo skills. There are also pics from the Dragon and Trumpeter hull, note the weld seams on the Dragon plastic and the reason, why the Trumpeter M4 is so wrong. The glacis plate has the wrong angle that makes the whole hull looking wrong, will build this kit with a help from a Modeltrans resin hull. Cheers Bernd
