  1. First model I've put up so be gentle 😁 The decals on this thing were absolutely insane. If you know anybody about to start this kit make sure you buy shares in their favourite decal solution.
  2. Hey all, So after busy days at work, trying to figure out business relocation, making redundancies and other crap (people said Brexit is good, I have to live with it and explain to stuff why job loss is a good thing for them, they can take back the control) Tamiya p47 came to me! I also bought Eduard etched parts, mainly for the seat belts, however got a good deal on ebay, so will use other parts as well. First look - what an amazing kit it is. Wow. What a detailed cockpit! So started yesterday evening, I have done few bits this morning. Just to note, I am nowhere even close to professional and nowhere even close to the builds I see on this forum, however find this model building a super relaxing hobby! I wont't post pictures of the kit itself, there are quite a lot of them and a lot of professional and objective reviews of how outstanding this kit is Started with a cockpit, was not sure about colour, lots of pictures of p47s suggest quite different "greens" so I though I would test my Vallejjo interior green for that. Brush painted, few coats and the result (it drys very quickly so once you finish all parts, the first one you started is almost ready for the next coat): Some Revell acrylic black and white + humbrol brown mixed humbrol red for the "pillow" (parts are not glued yet, but fit is amazing and holds stable even without glue ): Add some more detailing (revell silver, revell yellow, few Eduard Etched parts), dried brushed with lighter colour of vallejo interior green, dried brushed with revell silver, added tamiya black panel line wash and the result is still drying: Added Eduard seat belts, and could not resist to fit test it: So far that is it. I am not sure how accurate it is in terms of colouring etc, but looks SIMILAR of what you can find on google So happy with that I am fully impressed with the detailing Tamiya made, with the fit so far (even though it is couple of the parts only, but I tried building Dora Wings Bellanca which was somewhat a disaster in everything, so just lays in the box for the last couple of the months without progress) and it is an extremely enjoyable kit! Suggestions and recommendations are more than welcome, I am quite a beginner with only couple of the builds on my shelf. Just do not suggest airbrush, no space, had to work with brushes :DDDD
  3. I'm putting this here meantime as a placeholder: MW1 by John Walker, on Flickr I'll be back soon. John
  4. Just for fun and because it's really cheap, I've got a Tamiya 1/35 Leopard 1 (Kampfpanzer Leopard) and the only clue about painting in the instructions, is a mention of Olive Drab. Can anyone tell me more info about colour used to paint Leopard 1's. thanks Mike
  5. This is my first completed build of the year, it was built as part of the Grumman GB. This build was originally planned to be a Hasegawa F-14D with Aires Cockpit and Avionix’s “Bombcat” Update/Conversion kit. But as luck would have it I won the monthly raffle at my local IPMS and took home Tamiya’s awesome new 1/48th F-14D!! I can’t rave enough about this model, it’s truly beautiful and without doubt one of the nicest models I’ve ever built. I add a couple of extras to her just to finish her off. The OEM wheels are rubber/metal and rubber wheels only look good for a year or two before they start to perish. The ejector seats and exhaust cans just lack detail when compared to the rest of the model and sort of let it down, so they were replaced. For such fine detail throughout the model I needed a paint to capture this and Mr Paint Acrylic Lacquers are just incredible!! They go on so fine straight from the bottle and give a perfect finish. Best of all you don’t loose detail, in spots there are 18 layers of paint and the detail is still super crisp, I so love this paint. The only let down on the whole project was the decals, they were a bit old and for the Revell/Hasegawa model, which I found didn’t fit or line up correctly in a few very noticeable spots! But in the end I’m super happy with the results, I know I’ll have to build another one of these models, maybe an F-14A next time. Model: 1/48th Tamiya Grumman F-14D Tomcat Paint: Mr Paint (main) and Mr Hobby, Tamiya Acrylics, Model Master Metalizer Lacquers Extras: KA Models – F-14D GE Exhaust Nozzle set Quickboost – F-14 Ejection Seats Quickboost – F-14 Wheel set SuperScale Decals – F-14D VF-31 CAG Operation Freedom Iraq Thanks for looking and please enjoy.
  6. "Britain’s position is hopeless. The war is won by us. A reversal in the prospects of success is impossible." -- Generaloberst Franz Halder, diary entry for 22 July 1940 Oh, it has its triumphs, but look at its countless defeats, missed blows, and repeat attempts! -- Wislawa Szymborska, "On Death, Without Exaggeration" "My experience over Dunkirk had taught me that when attacked the best counter was to go into a right turn. In this manoeuvre, the Spitfire was infinitely superior to the Messerschmitt, and so long as one remained in the turn, the enemy pilot could not bring his guns to bear. And this I did, as the German pilot flashed past, turning as he did so to get behind me. But it was I who finished astern of him. The rest was easy." -- Flight Lieutenant Al Deere, 54 Squadron As you may know, I have something of an interest in the Battle of Britain, and so I thought for my next build I would try something simple and easy and make it only slightly more complex. It's widely-acknowledged that the ICM 1/72 109E is eerily -- some uncharitable souls might say suspiciously -- similar to the 1/72 Tamiya 109E, but for fuselage halves of the correct length. How similar is it reputed to be? The kit parts have been said to be interchangeable. I decided to test this theory. The fuselage halves sure seem to fit the wings well! I painted the interior Colourcoats RLM02 with RLM66 detail bits (and like an idiot, managed to spill almost all of my brand-new pot of RLM66, which is almost impossible to do with Colourcoats tins unless you're an idiot, and guilty as charged😞 Some speculative test-fitting suggests the Tamiya cockpit interior will fit without difficulty in the ICM fuselage. I'm using Xtradecals from their Battle of Britain 70th sheet (because both Tamiya and ICM decals are crap) to build Bf109E-3 "Yellow 15" of 3./JG52, flown by Unteroffizier Karl Wolff, which crash-landed in Calais on 30 August 1940. Wolff survived, only to be shot down and captured on 30 September 1940, a day of particularly heavy Bf109 losses for the Luftwaffe. The aircraft in question was photographed quite a bit, and as we can see, it received heavy field-applied mottling along the sides of the fuselage, in addition to having a white snout.
  7. My latest additions to my 1/48 Spitfire collection. Firstly the new Tamiya Mk.I. A fantastic kit with superb fit and detail. Finished with Hataka paints, and the kit decals as N3200/G-CFGJ. 1. 2. 3. 4. Next is the Airfix Mk.Vb. Again another superb kit, probaly Airfix best Spitfire. Again finished with Hataka paints as JH-C BM597/G-MKVB. 1. 2. 3.
  8. Hey there guys. I just picked up the new 1/48 scale Spit Mk 1 kit (#61119) today and it has some very nice features for interwar years Spit birds. If you plan to do a 1938-39 model Spitfire, here are some features which I think will be a nice surprise for you.: Pre-war ring and bead gun sight- Using a combination of some styrene and included photoetch, this is the first 1/48 Spitfire I have seen which includes the ring and bead sight. When I did my Interwar 19 Squadron bird years ago, I had to cobble something together. Two pronged fork pitot tube- Again, it wasn't around when I did my build. Granted Tamiya isn't the first to do this style of tube as the Hornby Airfix 2015 Spit Mk I kit (A05126) also included it. But it is nice to see Tamiya noticed it as well. Gun heater exhaust vents in the wings- This is something I have never seen on a 1/48 Spit kit. Early Spitfires tried to use exhaust gas heating to keep the .303s from freezing in flight. Heating ducts were installed along with an exhaust port in each wing. Tamiya put those into this kit! The wing mount holes are flashed over for those who want to do BoB aircraft. But, it is nice to have that option in this kit! Unarmored glass windscreen- Tamiya did the windscreen un-armored with the simple frame. Two versions of armored glass can be installed over the top of this for WW2 birds. The shape of the windscreen looks beautiful and at a nice petite thickness for pre-war birds. The pre-war marking option is for K9906 of 65 Squadron, FZ-L from 1939. It has the later more traditional style bubble canopy and the 3 bladed Jablo prop. There is some debate about whether the Munich Crisis camoed topside aircraft had an all aluminium underside as the kit depicts of whether it had gone with the black/white wing paint (making sure to leave the control surface undersides aluminium if you go that route). Early square spine antenna- The antenna mounting for the early and late style antennas is very robust and designed to help eliminate a glue stain. The square antenna mount looks great and is less prone to flexing than the Hornby Airfix one. So, you can do the kit out of the box for a pre-war Spitfire easily. Now if you want to do one of the earliest birds, such as the 19 Squadron Duxford Spits from 38-39 you are on your own for the Watts two-bladed prop and the flat canopy. But the 2015 Airfix Spit Mk 1 and the earlier Humbrol Airfix Spit kits provide the prop to scrounge. The Hornby Airfix Mk I also includes the flat top canopy, but it is a bit too thick to use properly if you intend to pose it open. So I recommend acquiring a Falcon Spitfire vac canopy set for the sliding portion if you wish to go that route.
  9. So, I have been away for a month or so on business and whilst I was away I got a little self indulgent present delivered After finishing my previous model I decided to challenge myself with a NMF finish and so got the 1:32 Tamiya P51-D Mustang with which to have a go. As I am still a relative newbie I am doing this OOTB..........baby steps....NMF is my next goal.........maybe scratching will come later. I have never attempted NMF before, have purchased some Alclad II black gloss primer along with airframe aluminium and dull aluminium to use on select panels as it seems people like to break up the panels to make it look more realistic.....we'll see how it goes. Got an old Nimrod model that I intend to use as a paint mule and see how easy (or not) it is to get the desired effect. If all else fails I can always go back to the Tamiya rattle cans. So, having had a week or so of very intermittent bench time I have the pit done, still needs to be weathered but I'm reasonably happy with it so far. Also got the engine done and just about ready to join the fuse halves together. Model has gone together well so far, no fit issues so hoping this trend continues as I have had very few fit issues with Tamiya (except those self imposed by not looking at the instructions properly!) So here is how she stands now..........as always, comments and critique most welcome.
  10. Hi Guys, I will make a conversion of the Tamiya 1/48 Gloster meteor F3 into a F4 with the Heritage aviation conversion set. It will get decals from Dutch decals for a Dutch Meteor from 323 squadron that was based at Leeuwarden afb in 1952/53. Here are some pictures. the box the content the conversion some extras I might be using?! And the scheme I use for it. That is it for now. Cheers,
  11. Following the fun and good results I had with the 1/48 Panzer IV, I decided to stick with 1/48 armor for my next project. I decided to build the Humber scout car. It's a very simple little kit, but has pretty decent detail. I'm sprucing it up a little bit with the Hauler PE set. Thought of not using all of it. I started by gluing the large components. This took about two hours. The PE bits and smaller details come next, so things will.slow down a bit now. I'm off to find a small soldering iron as a lot of this PE will require joining. The suspension is very nicely engineered. It only has a few parts, but looks suitably busy.
  12. I'm sure I won't be the only person to enter one of these But if I'm quick I'll be first!
  13. I've been looking forward to this build, here's my kit I've got some figures to go with her From Tamyia and Dragon. Not sure how I'm going to display her, I will keep you posted.
  14. Evening all, Thought I'd share my latest completion, my first for nearly two years, and it really shows! Tamiya's 1/72 FW 190 D9. Being horribly out of practice meant I made a catalogue of errors with this one, particularly around the canopy framing which frankly looks awful, and my inability to get a nice, tight line finish from the airbrush without spatter means this falls into the category of looking good from a few feet, but its nice to have got something built and regain some enthusiasm after such a long hiatus... 15. This is my completed Diorama 'Delivering Monty's Tank. It is the Merit M19 Diamond T Tank Transporter and the Tamiya M£ Grant tank. The Driver and camel are M&B figures. I Hope yo like it!
  16. That's my Tomcat. VF-1, their second cruise on USS Enterprise, on 1976. A real joy to build this kit. Quickboost seats and Fightertown decals. The most difficult part was to find out a bird with Tamiya block 85 configuration (standard beaver tail and two-grills gun vent), but still with the tan radome. Thanks to Forums and to a dedicated Facebook group I found two, choosing Wichita106. Now I Iook forward to see a new release from Tamiya, in A late version. Hope you like it! Paolo
  17. OK, so I decided for my next project to have a go at the legendary 956. Namely though the Jacky Ickx/Derek Bell Rothmans sponsored No 1 car. This one: I used to live near the Rothmans Factory in Spennymoor, Co. Durham as a kid and a couple of times in the 1980's they brought these cars down to the factory ( with the Bikes ) for their open days. They'd close off a bit of the industrial road and run the cars and bikes up and down showing them off. Of course as a youth I was totally in awe of these machines, the noise, the raw power, the smell. I can still hear and feel it like it was yesterday. I even had my own race tuned NS125 in the Rothmans livery which I'd ride around the town in my Rothmans racing jacket thinking I was king. I also raced ( not that successfully I will add ) the bike in a couple of amateur races so it's definitely going to be fun building one of the Porsches. Now I know this has been done in threads before here, but I'm not going for a standard build, I'm going for this: Basically the bodywork off, up on jacks, pit in version of the car. Thing is though the Tamiya kit is very basic so I'm going to have to scratch build a ton of it ( especially the front end frame work which basically doesn't exist in the kit ) I know that this super detail kit exists that was a collaboration between Scale Motorsport and Tamiya ( a more in depth look at the kit here ) and I've managed to track down one ( for a price ) if I want it but I just thought: you know what, where's the fun in that? So I've decided to see if I can scratch-build all the parts I need myself. So I started to do so a month or so ago armed with zero knowledge of working with styrene In at the deep end again. I however have the small photo etch parts kit that is commonly available to add some detail. So armed with some styrene profiles and sheets, the Rothmans decals and the Tamiya Porche 956 Canon kit here's where I'm at: The kit: All pretty basic stuff really. First job was to lop off the front and doors from the main moulding: All good. Then these awful looking moulded into the bodywork exhaust manifolds came off. I'll be replacing them with 1mm solder. Out came the Dremel for some hacking. Then some filler and sanding: Then I turned my attention to the front end frame and bulkhead build: First some paper cutting templates Cut out in styrene and test fitted Then I cut the holes and formed some rivets by pressing on the reverse with my scribe Then made a rough bulk head piece And primed and painted up with some alclad airframe aluminium Added the tiny brake, clutch and water reservoirs to the bulkhead using various bits of styrene and a cut up plastic milk carton for the bottle caps ( needs a bit of cleaning up ) also need to add clear tubing and wiring to complete the piece: Made the front end brake duct inlet frame from styrene. Bit of a headache this one, took ages to get right at this scale and I hummed and harred for hours over an actually design from the original walk-around pictures which don't show enough detail. Plus how it was going to actually fit onto the car, again the walk-around pic revealed no secrets here. I bought some clip on magnifying lenses for my glasses which are really helping with work at this scale. Ms Borez says that I look like a mad professor. I made and scrapped three others before I finally arrived at this design: Added the aluminium top frame and painted it up. I'll be adding some styrene hex bolts to the top for detail and obviously the brake ducting. The original piece on the car: Next up is priming and painting the car undertray and to start work on the actually frame which shouldn't really give me any issues as I have aluminium tubing of this size left over from the C9 build. The front hook is one of the photo etch parts I have too. This bit: Then I'll start fitting all of these pieces together before concentrating on the rest of the front end i.e. suspension and brakes. And that's where I'm at right now. Pretty pleased with my bits so far, all going to plan. Thanks for looking
  18. Dear All, Having just bought this kit and read the glowing review from a while back can anyone confirm which version(s) it represents as the P47D had so many. I've just bought the Squadron Signal book on the subject plus perused the internet and now even more confused given that some of the changes between variants were either internal or quite subtle externally. I see that the kit offers a choice of propellers but again I think there were more than two types used at various stages, plus the excellent instructions don't actually say which variant they apply to only the A or B build options. Kind Regards Colin.
  19. okay so popping the posting cherry with tamiyas 1/48 lanc with extra bits and bobs thrown in generally the right places. namely the eduard cockpit detailing set and landing flaps, new barrels for the turrets courtesy of Hannats the brand escapes me but bloody gorgeous bits of turned brass they are, the decal set including 'Lonesome Lola' delivered to my mucky dabs by way of Kitsworld and a type D bomb trolley with cookie bomb by flightpath again from Hannats its a build that started some 7 months ago although to be fair there's probably only about 2 months actual work been done, gotta love the distractions of work, missus, and various really should get on but ill do this instead things. only got a few pics nearing the end of the build as my old laptop decided to go on permanent strike with the rest of the pics on and some bright spark forgot to back them up! So I didn't really take much on as my first foray into PE and weathering here's a couple during the decaling process https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9810129D57482670!2277&authkey=!AOjgSEvbDx5kxgA&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9810129D57482670!2272&authkey=!AG0kmq3HpEDcPHY&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPGhttps://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9810129D57482670!2276&authkey=!AEyRQS5dYXapM28&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG and after https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9810129D57482670!2274&authkey=!ALmijkV5HWYC0jY&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPGhttps://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9810129D57482670!2271&authkey=!ANnUy_UA8sCG13w&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG and on a roughly knocked up base that originally was intended to be a concrete dispersal area with a tractor to go with the bomb trolley but I couldn't find one for less than about 80 quid and didn't find the time to play around with scaling down and scratching the concrete https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9810129D57482670!2266&authkey=!ANZk8bywtDdSNUk&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9810129D57482670!2269&authkey=!AIpTto2f4AZklAk&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPGhttps://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9810129D57482670!2307&authkey=!AMrZtZOpWQECIAI&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9810129D57482670!2304&authkey=!ADa2O9ofLOid294&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9810129D57482670!2306&authkey=!ALBU5i2omvrLh74&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG any comments, questions or advice good bad or indifferent are most welcome, I just wanted to share what hopefully just for now is my most accomplished bit of man cave mayhem Matt
  20. Hi All, Yet another build rescued from the shelf of doom... I started on this in the late 80s (!), and it's been on and off the work-bench ever since. I finally decided that it needs a fair crack of the whip, so here it is. First the picture of the box top: Still a tasty little beastie, I think. The decals all seem OK still. Not something that I have found with all 30 year old kits, Tamiya included... So, this was where it had been left for a very long time... The frame should be gloss black, but the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that it's somewhat non-glossy. I decided I thought it looked better in satin black, so that's what I did! So, the next stage was the rear wheel: A bit closer: The only real issue I had here was getting the inside half of the brake calliper in, but after a bit of fiddling with a pair of tweezers, it just popped into place nicely. The chain has to be threaded through the swing-arm. There's a small slot that allows you to do that. Once the other half of the swing-arm is cemented to the first bit, the slot is closed. Next, the swing-arm installed: When you install the bolt that holds the swing-arm onto the frame, a small pip on the drive sprocket pops into a hole on the gear-box casing, making everything quite sturdy. The next stage was to install the carburettors and the exhausts. Kind of symmetrical that, inlet and outlet... Since the real bike has throttle cables that disappear under the tank, I decided that I should attempt to replicate them. They'll just disappear under the tank on completion. Also, I'll need to fabricate the throttle cable from the throttle on the handlebars as well. The exhausts are moulded with a huge void around the back, where in theory, it won't be seen. Because I am a fussy sort (A bit OCD !), I decided to fill them in so that the void became invisible. After a lot of filling with scrap plastic, Milliput and Squadron white putty, a hell of a lot of sanding to get the profile right, they came out quite well, I think. I just wish I had taken pictures at the time!!! Another fiddly job was to thread the rear exhaust pipes into the rear cylinder exhaust outlets. But with a bit of twisting they popped into place perfectly, and they then lined up with the support brackets on the frame. I have made quite a lot of progress, mostly on the front-end, but haven't uploaded the pictures yet. More soon.... Thanks for looking, Alan.
  21. Hi All, Finally, my second RFI for 2109. This is the Nissan GTR R33 that I had literally completed bar the decals and licence plates. Until tonight. I also tidied up the black around the window frames. Some had bled under the masking and needed to be carefully removed. I used a micro-brush dipped in Mr Color Levelling thinners to soften the excess paint, and a dry micro brush to mop up the dissolved paint. Since the gloss lacquer is the Zero Paints 1K lacquer, it is resistant to the Mr Color thinners. On the whole, I am pleased with the result. There are obviously things that I would like to improve, as always. However, here are the pictures: I really need to sort out a proper background. Perhaps I can construct a photo booth as my next project. I used my tripod and a narrower aperture (F13), so that I got a much better depth of field. However, the background id not so blurred out. Maybe I can correct that in the future in photoshop. Thanks for looking in. Cheers, Alan.
  22. Been wanting to build one of these for a long time. I love the shape and the whole concept behind the bent wing bird. Just adds that bit extra. Last year I finally set to work as part of a Pacific build off with some others. Took longer than I expected. The Tamiya kit was excellent other than fitting the engine cowl around the engine. Spent a fair amount of time rebuilding the cockpit and adding more detail. I didn't want to weather this bird but rather have it in, shall we say, museum condition, all lovingly polished.
  23. So it turns out that trying to get a build done in a short period of time, over the festive period, when you have young children in the house doesn't work too well, who would have guessed? Instead I will transfer my Matilda II to this GB and see if I can get it done by the end of the month. For reference, the original build thread is Here With the new year out of the way, and work calming down after the festive rush, I drilled out the hole in the mantlet too 2.5mm, and inserted a length of plastic tube to serve as the 3" Howitzer barrel, I think I got the length right, but it may be a little off. After priming with Army Painter Desert Yellow, I gave the top of the side armour panels a coat of Tamiya Red, This serves as the base colour of the fording lines, which I masked with narrow strips of Tamiya tape: The rest of the model, including the big, cast track guards, were sprayed with a Tamiya mix of SCC13, mix ratios courtesy of Mike Starmer. I also sprayed the resin track links with a mix of Tamiya Dark Iron and Brown in roughly 1-1. Assembly of the track runs has commenced, I'll try to get more done/updated tomorrow.
  24. Hello all, Here is my recently completed 1/48 Tamiya F-14D Tomcat in the markings of VF-213 'Black Lions' during their last cruise with the jet in 2005 - 2006. The build thread is here BuNo 164602 was delivered new to VF-124 in 1992, before being transferred to VF-2 in late 1994 and eventually to VF-213 in 1997. The jet saw combat in Operation 'Desert Fox' in 1998, 'Enduring Freedom' in 2001 and 'Iraqi Freedom' in 2003, when it expended the squadrons' highest volume of ordnance - a mixture of 31 JDAMs and LGBs. The jet was retired in 2006 and I believe remains in storage at AMARG. Extras used included a set of Quickboost seats, a Master pitot & AoA probe and a GBU-38 from the spares. The ROVER antenna was made from a styrene sheet. With my other Tamiya F-14D: Thanks for looking. Dave
  25. This is just a placeholder, as I'd completely forgotten signing up for this one two years ago!. Anyway a quick trip to Halifax Modellers World resulted in this little marvel. Due to Christmas and an Airfix Blenheim I'll not get much done this year but This is my start of 2019.
