Following on from visiting ADEX in South Korea on the 4Aviation trip we moved over to Taiwan for 10 days. Here are a few from the air force museum at Gangshan which also happens to be home to T-34s, AT-3 trainers and the air force academy. Images from the rest of the trip are work in progress. The museum has a wide and varied selection of aircraft, helicopters and other equipment such as weapons, engines and radars that have served with the air force. Perhaps most interestingly it also contains a number of aircraft that defectors from the PRC flew over to Taiwan. Entry to the museum is a bargain TWD$200 (about £5) and well worth a visit. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. MiG 19/J-R - Farmer. Flown to Taiwan by a defector from the PRC in July 1977 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. The IL28 Beagle was flown to Taiwan by a defecting crew in November 1965 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. MiG21F-13. Yes, this a Hungarian MiG. Apparently it was confiscated by ROC customs in 1990 and handed over to the ROCAF museum. How it came to be confiscated or why wasn't explained on the information panel. 17. 18. 19. 20. The Presidential 707 can be boarded for an extra £2.50. I was surprised at how primitive it was inside. 21. 22. 23. 24. 25. This F-CK-1B was retired in 2020 and is known as the "Generals' plane" owing to the 19 generals who have flown in it. Their star ranks can be seen as blue rectangles by the remove before flight tag. 26. 27. 28. That's it, thanks for looking.

Just a few of the aircraft that landed at Taipei’s city airport yesterday. This is the smaller, regional airport within the city itself, not the larger international one at Taoyuan, which is about an hour’s drive from Taipei itself. We were actually visiting Taipei rose gardens with my in-laws, but it happens to be right under the approach! Not the best photos as they’re just snaps on my phone, but some rarer colours that may be of interest?

Hi gang, After announcing what my second build would be for the GB I thought it was time to actually make a proper post for it even if I won't start it for about a week until my F-7 is closer to the finish line. I have chosen what I consider (and many others) to be one of the true icons of the Cold War, the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. When it comes to the 1980's in the geographic scope of this GB there are only two options open, namely either Japan or Taiwan. having built a JASDF F-104J a couple of years ago I decided that this build would be in the colours of the ROCAF (Republic Of China Air Force) and you can't really have a collection of F-104's without a ROCAF one in it as they operated every version of the F-104 with the exception of the C and F and scored the first ever kills for the type when 4 f-104's engaged a formation of PLAAF J-6's and Major Hu Shih-lin and Captain Shih Bei-puo each shot down one of the J-6's over the disputed island of Qemoy. The kit I will be using is the Eduard NATO boxing of the venerable Hasegawa F-104G which comes with a couple of resin extras (basically just one each of the Martin Baker or Lockheed ejector seats) and a very nice decal sheet which will be of no use whatsoever for this build, here is a shot of the box top; And the contents to prove that the plastic is as yet untouched; A shot of the resin extras along with a couple of other resin bits I have that should find their way into the build and the etched fret that Eduard add to the box; The lovely, but useless for this build, decal sheet; And a look at the sheet I have ordered from Bestfong in Taiwan which should hopefully arrive in time; I have used one of their sheets before when I built a ROCAF P-47N a few years ago and that sheet was of excellent quality so I have no doubt that these will be of the same quality, we shall see. I've had great service from them so far as the sheets I ordered were dispatched within 24 hours of placing the order and I was given a tracking number, which works! Thanks for looking in and as usual any comments and criticisms are gratefully received. Craig.

Here is my first kit of the year, finally! It is Italeri's 1:72 Lockheed F-104A-20-LO Starfighter. It represents 4221 (s/n 56-0799 - ex-USAF), of the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing/8th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Republic of China AF, Ching Chuan Kang Air Base, Taiwan, 1961. This was the old Esci kit re-released by Italeri. It was a pretty basic kit which I decided to build very much OOB. All of the parts needed cleaning up due to some flash, ejection pins and sink marks. Fit wasn't bad but nearly all joins needed work and in some places there were steps to deal with. I only added ejection pull handles to the seat. The cockpit decals were way oversize (1:48?) so I more-or-less painted them on. I replaced the kit's missiles with those from a Hasegawa weapons set which looked better. The kit was fully painted and varnished by brush. For the metal surfaces I used Humbrol 27002 Polished Aluminium, dry-brushing Hum56 Aluminium in some panels and Vallejo Oily Steel in two areas of the rear fuselage. Most panels were given a final coat of Pollyscale Satin whilst others had Xtracrylix Flat Varnish brushed on to give different sheens. Decals went on well although some didn't correspond in size to those illustrated in the instructions! I had some problems with paint and varnish but just about managed to salvage things to an acceptable level. This and the fact that my attention was very divided by other things caused this one to be so delayed. Thanks for looking Miguel

Way back in 2018 I started this kit for the Trainers GB, but ground to a halt before completing the cockpit. With lockdown I decided to work through some of my half-started models, though barely a sixteenth-started might be more accurate. I acquired this kit for a fiver from the chap that attends our monthly (in the old days) IPMS meetings. I’d never heard of the plane or the kit maker, you can find the aircraft easily enough on the net but I do recommend care if you Google “Lo Models Taiwan”! I believe the AT-3 was Taiwan’s first jet, designed in cooperation with Northrop, and this kit was Lo-Models first and possibly only 1/72 kit – there is a vague suggestion on the net of other AIDC types being kitted but I found no sign. The kit itself is reasonable for its vintage, parts breakdown is fairly standard, the pilot figures are some of the best sculpted I’ve seen! The kit comes with underwing stores for the light attacker role. It would look quite impressive fully loaded out with tanks, bombs and sidewinders, but I stuck with the clean trainer airframe. The paint job on the boxart I assume is from the first deployment of the aircraft. Some have also appeared in SEA-style camo and its also the mount of the ROCAF display team. Anyway I went with the silver and “red”, which I mixed 2-3 parts orange to one part red (Tamiya). I forgot painting red over silver is even worse than over grey primer, so had to add a coat of white hallway through – hence those panels ended up with 5 or six coats! The kit, whilst basic, builds up reasonably well, not noticeably any worse than an Airfix or Revell of the era, certainly not as bad as the few other builds on the net suggested (or maybe their warnings adjusted my expectation). Its certainly quite an attractive aircraft, I believe there is or was a 1/48 version in the offing from some manufacturer. Cheers Will PS Self Reliance is the translation for Tsu Chang as per the boxart, elsewhere the name is quoted as Tzu Chung or Tsu Chiang.

A nice little kit this, fitted together well and looks a bit different in Taiwanese colours. The Taiwanese operate 57 of these capable French jets, all based at Hsinchu in north western Taiwan. The three squadrons of the 499 TFW are the 41st and 42nd TFGs, tasked with air defence, and the 48th TFG, tasked with conversion training for the type.

A change from all the RAF stuff, following a trip to Taiwan I'm going to make a Mirage and an F-16 in their colours. The Mirage came with Taiwanese roundels, and I've got some Bestfong F-16 decals with enough numbers to use some on the Mirage too. The colours translated to Humbrol 127 and 144, though the latter seems a bit dark compared to photos of the real jet, so I might use a different medium grey.

Hi all I’m thinking of doing a Mirage 2000 and an F-16 in Taiwan colours, 1/72. Do any of these kits come with those decals, or if not, are there any aftermarket decals for them does anyone know?

Once a year I try to spot far far away. After two trips in Japan it was time to find another target. This year I went to Taiwan. I paid visits to Hsinchu (Mirage 2000), Chiayi (F-16), Tainan (F-CK-1), Taichung/CCK (F-CK-1), Gangshan (AT-3 & T-34C), Taitung (F-5), Hualien (F-16 & RF-5) & Taipei/Songshan (transport a/c) airbases. And it was nice, really nice. The RoCAF fighter bases being active 7/7. As when the weather or light conditions are not of my convenience I drop my film cameras (with slides films!) and move to pics for dummies, I mean digital picture.
