  1. Hi folks,I am at the painting stage of airfix,s 1/72 new typhoon and planning to build the 247 squadron machine with the under wing I.D. stripes, does anyone know if earlier in the year this aircraft wore top wing stripes for D-Day?or even if the other example from 439 squadron wore stripes at the same time with I would assume blue/red roundels. Thanks Steve.
  2. Hi all, My second effort of three in this gb (the one I'm dreading second most) is the Airfix 1/72 Hawker Typhoon 1b The relatively new box flatters to deceive.... It harbors a kit that I'm sure many of you are familiar with - and has been doing the rounds since 1959 - yes a 54 year old kit.. I will be trying to add some photo etch to this (my first ever time working with 1/72 etch) and maybe some aftermarket decals - that is if the kit hasn't beaten me by the time we get to that stage.... As in my other builds please keep your expectations low - my aim is to complete not to impress!!!! Let's have a look what joys await....... The box... The Sprues - A closer shot of the sprue with the prop - What is that around the base of the prop? Flash or detail? Does it stay or does it go?? finally instructions, decals and a rather thick looking transparent blob...... Any help on known pitfalls and advice would as always be much appreciated.. However this may not be a place for the purist - things could get messy!!! Thanks Tuco
  3. Hawker Typhoon, a Complete Guide Valiant Wings Airframes and Miniatures The Hawker Typhoon was a British single-seat fighter-bomber, produced by Hawker Aircraft. It was designed to be a medium-high altitude interceptor, as a direct replacement for the Hawker Hurricane, but several design problems were encountered, and it never completely satisfied this requirement. Its service introduction in mid-1941 was plagued with problems, and for several months the aircraft faced a doubtful future. However, when the Luftwaffe brought the formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190 into service in 1941 the Typhoon was the only RAF fighter capable of catching it at low altitudes; as a result it secured a new role as a low-altitude interceptor. Through the support of pilots such as Roland Beamont it also established itself in roles such as night-time intruder and a long-range fighter. From late 1942 the Typhoon was equipped with bombs, and from late 1943 RP-3 ground attack rockets were added to its armoury. Using these two weapons, the Typhoon became one of the Second World War's most successful ground-attack aircraft. Written by Richard A. Franks, this book has been designed as a useful guide for all those modellers who have an interest in all things Typhoon but also includes lots of information on its predecessor the Tornado. The clearly defined sections cover pretty much every aspect of the Typhoons history, both in full size airframes and in miniature. The sections include:- Airframe Chapters • Evolution Tornado • Evolution Typhoon • Typhoon Production Variants • Drawing Board Projects • Camouflage and Markings • Survivor • Colour Profiles Miniature Chapters • Hawker Typhoon Kits • Building a Selection • Building a Collection • In Detail: The Hawker Typhoon IIb Appendices • Tornado and Typhoon Kit List • Tornado and Typhoon Accessory List • Typhoon Decal List • Tornado and Typhoon Production • Bibliography The information contained in these sections will be invaluable to those who build Typhoon kits of all scales. The detailed diagrams, and colour views combined with the great selection of wartime photographs make for a superb reference point to build a super detailed model. The kit, accessory and decals lists make it easy to see what has been released and will be very useful to make a project list up just from reading one book. At the very back of the book is a pull out double sided section with six view plans of the Typhoon Ib Car Door and Bubble Top variants with profiles of the fuselage, all in 1:48 scale. Conclusion This is a comprehensive and well laid out book, that’s easy to read yet packed full of information. The photo selection has been well thought out and the photographs of the kit builds are well shot. Even if you don’t build a kit of the Typhoon it is still an interesting read. Recommended. 4. Hello BM'ers... It's with a due mix of excitement and dread that I post these pics...my very first publicly aired build. I came back to the hobby around 5 months ago, and have truly become immersed in it... I realise that there are a lot of Typhoons around at the moment, so you'll have to forgive me for choosing a common subject. Built straight out of the box, painted with Tamiya Acrylics (including the invasion stripes) and then weathered using a mix of oils, pencil and Humbrol powders. My thoughts: - I need to pay a LOT more attention to the fine detail of decal placement (leading edges, for example, compounded by knocking over a bottle of micro-sol mid-aligment) - I should take up the carpet in my study so I don't lose things like radio antennae and foot-steps to the carpet monster - I should never over-do weathering...wink wink. Like all art forms, I realise weathering is a mix of realism, subtlety and skill. Hopefully I might pick at least one of the three up with a bit more practise! I realise this is a long way from perfect, but it's the first build (of 5 so far...) that I'm actually happy with. It's a lovely kit, and heartily recommended, but watch out for leading-edge wing-root fit issues. The decals set perfectly with Microsol. I enjoyed it so much I've just picked up another one... Now - enough prevarication, on with the shots: (be kind!)
  5. Hi all, Please don't be too judge mental, but I thought I'd share my first attempt at one of the new tooling typhoons that Airfix have recently released. And what a fantastic kit it is, feel bad for not letting it go to someone who knows what they're doing a little better... Haha. But anyway, here she is! I made the starter kit version as that was the only one I could find(and still haven't seen a "normal" boxed kit since) at the Hendon model show. The paints were the ones complimentary with the kit, and in hindsight I wish that I had used the Revell acrylics that I'm used to but C'est la vie! The decals were great, hardly any silvering from them at all. Sadly for all of you I was too excited to get building and so didn't have time to stop, and take pictures in-between assembly stages, this kit was built in a night(and early morning, if you want to get technical) Here she is! The water splodges were sorted, one thing I shall do on the next one is cut the film on the decal so I don't get a mini tent on the side(under the "H") Enjoy All the best GuidoKM
  6. Kit: 1/72 Brengun Hawker Typhoon Ib Gun Barrels, Wheels, Rockets, Rails: Vailant RAF, 609. Squadron, Summer 1944 Thanks for your interest. Greetings from Vienna, Austria Roman Schilhart
  7. Hi all! It's been a while but I finally made a push and finished it. Or so I thought, having noticed as I put the camera away I had forgotten to fit the pitot tube and radio antenna (a bit of copper electrical wire). I guess you can use your imagination. The two rockets missing are going to be having the fuses fitted by some ground crew when I get round to doing a little diorama (my first try...) Even in 72nd this kit has a good 'presence' - well done Airfix. Only minor niggle that's not really fixable is the slightly undersized spinner: there's a wee 'step' to the nose cowling, thought it's probably my poor workmanship more than anything!
  8. Hi all, Have been following the other excellent Typhoon build and decided to have a crack at this ingenious little kit, even though I don't generally do 72nd. It's going to be standard except I've decided to keep one cannon bay fully open and the other with the door open just a crack as if left by a hurried ground crewman. Yet to decide how to achieve this exactly! Anyway, have got as far as cockpit done and fuselage together... The only problem so far has been a HUGE gap between the lover halves of the radiator cowl (last photo, with lots of filler). I couldn't decide if I'd just not got everything sitting right inside or if it's just that way regardless. Possibly should have left the flap out and the just cut the pins off it to fit later.
  9. Hi all, Not done a great deal in the way of modelling lately, day job has been hectic and my workbench is covered in 1/1 scale parts from my 1961 Vespa that I am restoring so doing a lot of sanding & filling!! Anyway, finished the Italeri Tiffie a few weeks ago, not an expert on 21 Century jets, but kit went together ok and despite the fact I think this is really the demo aircraft it looks ok in 1 Squadron markings, just need to source some pylons & stores to make it look a bit more like an FGR4!! Built OOB apart from Xtradecals and a few bits of cockpit etch left over from my Hawk T2. Crit more than welcome! cheers Simon
  10. Would any one know it the colour scheme featured in the Academy 1/72 Typhoon Ib(HH-A, MN582 of 175 Squadron, August 1944)is accurate for a rocket armed/3 blade prop/small tailplane aircraft as provided for in the kit? http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10113135t2/60/2 Also can any one tell me if the wing tip navigation lights on Typhoons had a clear lense with a coloured bulb or had coloured (red/green) lenses? Thanks for any input.
  11. Good Morning All, I'm intending to do 4 Typhoons all representing the 3 Squadrons based at RAF Holmsley South, as well as MN666 of Wing Commander Flying, Charles Green. Thanks to a link in another thread, I've now got info on a 174 Sqn machine to supplement that I've found in other sources. However, the same link has thrown up a question that I'd like answered regarding Sqn Ldr Jack Collins' MN819, MR-?. http://www.newforestww2.org/photo.php?image=241.jpg The image in the link above shows this particular machine with a possible spiral on the spinner and the old Aeromaster sheet 48-282 Storms in the Sky Part 2 also shows the spiral in the instructions. However, looking at the image, the spiral could be the result of the prop blade casting a shadow. Are there other photos or sources that confirm or otherwise Collins' use of a spiral on the spinner? I'm guessing there should be, since Aeromaster show it to be blue. I'd really like it confirmed one way or the other before I commit to plastic! Also, one last question. What harness should I be fitting to my Airfix Tiffies, Sutton or Q? Thanks in advance for any help, Mark.
  12. Easykit Tornado IDS & Eurofighter Typhoon 1:100 Revell Well, not quite what I've been used to reviewing, but probably the most important.....well according to my 7 year old son anyway, he's insisted that I get these reviews done so he can have them! Joking aside, I really like these as they are a great introduction to modelling. The kits are snap together with a very basic parts count and as can be seen, pre-painted. There's a set of instructions so the kits get budding modellers familiar with the process of assembly without needing to touch glue or paint. Detail is fairly basic, but that's not the point. There's enough to make them interesting to young eyes and of course, fly them all round the house and inspire the imagination. If you're reading this, then you understand because you did it once yourself !!! Tornado IDS As Revell is a German company, we can forgive them for not doing the British Livery. The scheme is the 2006 NATO Tigermeet scheme of the Tactical Reconnaissance Wing 51 "Immelmann" operating from Schleswig/Jagel Air Base. Loadout appears to be HARM missiles with the wing tanks. The only problem we came across was the need to sand one of the main wheel lugs to get it to snap into the fuselage. Eurofighter Typhoon This is a somewhat stranger aircraft in that it appears to be a single seat design but with two crew squeezed in. Hey I'm not sure the target market really care, they're a much easier bunch to satisfy than us old uns !! Loadout appears to be fuel tanks and AIM-120, although the panel lines on the fuel tanks are a little deep for my liking Conclusion Well, the best person to answer this is my son. He loves them. He enjoys building things then being able to play with them afterwards in spirited dogfights and that's the point here. Of course it doesn't teach painting and gluing skills, but it does get them interested in the fun of assembling a kit. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. 13. I have bought a 1:400 scale Revell Typhoon class SSBN from Shar2, however I am slightly impatient and want to have a look at the i instructions for it....before it arrives at my home.... Does anyone happen to know where I can find a PDF of these instructions. I have spent absolutely ages tonight trying to find them, but have not succeeded.... Any help gratefully recieved.

  15. Gents, Got a pass out of work so my lovely Fiancee, and my mate Simon went over to Wales as it looked like a nice day over there. We drove through some of the worst rain we had seen in a while (so I was told, I was alsepp in the back of the car from Birmingham to Welshpool!); once we got to Wales, the rain stopped and we were greeted with some decent weather all day. Not the best of shots, but we got some decent traffic through We did have a C-130J through but I have not had time to do those shots yet! So all in all an 18 hour day, 400 mile round trip and 10 passes by some of the RAF's finest - a good day in my eyes - it is just a shame the 7 - 9 F-15E's did not come down to play. I have one more days leave to take before the end of the year so I should be back again soon!
