  1. My thanks to @CliffB and @Enzo the Magnificent for hosting this GB. I am a bit late starting but that is because I have only just cleared a big enough space on my modelling bench for this, the Hasegawa 1/72 Boeing B-47E Stratojet '380th Bomb Wing' (00683): Opening the box reveals 165 parts moulded in grey plastic, plus 1 transparency. There is a fair bit of flash, seams and ejector pin marks to clean up: The A3 cutting mat gives a good idea of the fuselage length: Lots of bomb halves but I won't be using them. Many of the parts have flash, especially the crew figures: The undercarriage legs will not be used as I have white metal replacements: Wing halves. I really do not have space to display this kit so I might have to dry-fit the wings so that I can store it more easily: Drop tanks have a fair bit of flash: These parts had fallen off the runners but most of them will not be used: Cockpit transparency is clear but rather thick but I may be replacing it with a Falcon job: The decal sheet has options for two machines. The first is for 0-32415, 380th Bomb Wing, SAC, 'City of Plattsburg II' and 12240, 321st Bomb Wing, SAC, Pine Castle AFB. I also have some Super Scale decals (see further down this post) but at the moment, I am not sure which to use: Instructions are spread over two large pages, each sub-divided into A4 sections. Front of Instruction Sheet page has a potted history of the B-47E: Reverse of Instruction Sheet - Part List and Assembly Sections 1 to 6: Reverse of Instruction Sheet - Assembly Sections 7 to 9: Front of Instruction Sheet - Assembly Sections 10 to 16: There is also a separate Painting & Decal Placement Profile sheet: The reverse of that sheet has the list of paints to be used, along with some modelling tips: Some Aftermarket Bits & Bobs: Pavla B-47 Engine Upgrade (U72-141): New Ware Masks B-47E Stratojet Cockpit and Wheel Masks (NWAM0362): Scale Aircraft Conversions B-47 White Metal Undercarriage Legs (72068): Instruction Sheet for Super Scale B47-E Decals (72-561): Although Super Scale's instructions portrays four B-47Es, I only have a complete set for for 2609, the 1,000th B-47 built. I am not sure whether to use this option: One of my favourite aircraft books is the Osprey Air Combat Boeing B-47 Stratojet book by Lindsay Peacock: Also keeping me company during this build will be the film "Strategic Air Command", with James Stewart. Lots of lovely shots of Boeing B-47s and Convair B-36s. One B-36 take-off always makes me smile. That is all for now. Dave
  2. The Boeing XB-47D Stratojet in 1/144th. The Boeing Stratojet is probably one of the nicest looking jets of the early jet age. In 1/72nd scale the Stratojet is very large model, and I have built two or three in the past. So, for a more manageable scale, I decided to use the Academy offering in 1/144th scale( Kit no 4443). The kit has been issued in differing guises over the years from the Hobbycraft variants B-47B, B-47E, and RB-47H issues, to the Academy B-47B variant boxing , and latterly offering by Academy which contains parts and decal options for all three that the separate Hobbycraft boxing's offered. So, for this particular build I wanted to replicate the XB-47D experimental version of which there were two airframes. These were conversions of the B-47B airframes each with two enormous Curtiss-Wright WT49 W-1 Turboprops driving 15ft 'Paddle Type' propellers in place of the twin podded jets under the inner wing. Two airframes were 51-2103 and 51-2046 with the former first flying on 26th August, 1955. Each Wright WT49 Turboprop developed 9710 horsepower and each 15' Curtiss Electric propeller had automatic feathering and also provided some ground reversing propulsion. My start point was an Academy B-47B/E boxing pictured, and the RetroWings XB-47D conversion set (RW44092), also pictured. I would probably need to rob my decal bank to make up the serials. My aim is to create something a little different than the normal B-47's seen on club tables or at shows. Anyway, onto the build......... The parts are crisply moulded and well detailed for this scale. After a little cleaning up the cockpit and undercarriage bays were painted in a Zinc Chromate Green type of colour, my mix is Tamiya Yellow Green XF-4 and Olive Green XF-58 roughly at a ratio of 3:1. Once dry the seats were painted up using various blacks, greys, greens, reds. To create a representation of seat belts I painted some thin paper pale brown, attached with PVA glue and some dots of black and silver to suggest buckles. I plan to add two instrument panels from thin plasticard and to be painted up to suggest instruments as the build enters its final stage. The XB-47D was converted from B-47 airframes so the panels in the fuselage were removed by gently scoring along the indicated lines and the early type RATO panels supplied in the kit installed. Some trimming and shims were needed to get a nice finish. I also found it helpful to add a brace behind the RATO panel to prevent distortion when filling/sanding. This meant that the rear wheel bay needed to have some plastic removed from either side to allow fuselage to fit correctly, luckily the plastic is thick enough to be adjusted without affecting the bay detail. Once done the cockpit was attached, wheel bays inserted into fuselage and once set the halves will be joined ensuring as good as a match as possible to minimise any filling. I will also attach the clear nose part for this version, the XB-47D was based on the B-47E, but the airframe retained the early more glazed nose of the B-47B rather than the solid of the B-47E, also the early internal RATO fitment of the B-47B. The wings were next up, and the outer engine positions cleaned up as there was a small gap at the rear of the fairings. This still needs a little more attention and some rescribing the lost/filled panel lines. Whilst on with the wings, I modified the flap layout and re-scribed the new altered flap using the resin flap inserts in the conversion set as a guide, rather than cutting the flaps out an the inserting the resin supplied flaps as indicated in the set. As for the new engines and pylons, I'm still mulling over the best way to tackle these.
  3. A 1/48th Boeing B-47 Stratojet resin kit is in project by Jetmads - ref. 404701 Sources: https://www.facebook.com/JETMADS2016/posts/760241394898148 https://www.jetmads.com/product-page/1-48-b-47-stratojet V.P.
  4. As promised at the end of this project's Work In Progress here are pictures of my Stratojet conventional bomber in ' operational service ' . Change of Squadron colours from red to blue. Scratchbuilt MD-3 power trolley and 1/144 Boeing WB-50D Weatherfortress in background. Scratchbuilt MD-3 trolley. I was going to buy a resin kit of it but they were unavailable/out of stock so I decided to make my own from plastic card and plastic rod. I found the wheels in my spares box, they are the bogie wheels from an Airfix Panzer IV. Landing light in front of engine pod is hand painted. Windscreen wiper added. Thank you for viewing. cheers, adey
  5. B-47E-25-DT S/N 52-0166. Strategic Air Command operated by the 9th Bombardment Wing, 509th Bombardment Wing, Medium & 40th Bomb Wing, Medium; last used by the US Navy as a photographic training target at NAWS China Lake, California, and performed the last flight of a B-47 in June 1986 from NAWS China Lake to Castle AFB. 6. I just acquired a kit from an aircraft way out of my "confort zone" - Hasegawa's B-47E Stratojet. I would like to convert it to the first prototype, XB-47 46-065. Are there any great problems in the conversion? To my (limited) knowledge, the most visible ones are the tip of the fin, no gun turret, clear nose, sliding canopy and the array of holes for the JATO bottles. All this will take some work, but not so much. I am worried about more subtle differences - namely the format of the engine nacelles due to different engines. And I would like to know about any significant problems with the kit. Thanks in advance! Carlos
  7. I picked this little cracker up at this years Yeovilton show in February and have been building it on and off since then. It's a great kit and allows you to build a B or E model although there are some mistakes in the instruction sheet regarding tail armament for each version. The kit itself goes together very well and has lovely crisp panel lines. There are two schemes on the decal sheet, I opted for the all over silver aircraft simply because I'm lazy, the other aircraft has silver top sides and white undersides. The decals took a while to settle and the red band had to be painted on as the decal didn't fit very well. I opted to leave off the drop tanks as I'd forgotten to make the holes to attach the pylons before I stuck the wings together If you can find one of these and you like this scale I recommend it as a great model.
