1. No whilst it is rightly best remembered for it's service throughout WWII the Supermarine Spitfire continued in service well into the 1950's with a great many air forces including the RAF who finally retired their last operational example (a PR.XIX ) after it performed it's last flight on 10th June 1957. As I signed up for both elements of this GB and the subjects built post 1946 are getting the Lion's share of the builds I thought that I should add one from the "used in the 50's but built earlier" category and the Spitfire fits that perfectly. For my build I will be using the recent Airfix 1/48 FR Mk.XIV which I picked up in their New Year sale (I got two as it seemed rude not to ) which actually comes with markings for an eligible option in the form of TZ112 from II( AC) Sqn RAF based in Germany 1950-51, but me being me I want to do something a bit different and that comes in the form of one of approximately 130 Mk.XIV's sold to Belgium between 1947 and 49 and were used until 1954. Daco do a very nice set of decals covering various marks of Spitfire including the XIV so I have ordered a set and some Eduard seatbelts which will be the only additions I make to this kit. Speaking of the kit here is picture of the box lid and contents; I'm going to spend the rest of this week working on my Caproni in the WWII twins GB and will hopefully make a start on this (work permitting) next week so don't expect any big leaps forward too soon. Thanks for looking in and as usual all comments and criticisms are gratefully received. Craig.
2. I got this kit from the Newark and Lincs show back in the Autumn for £6. As you can see it was original only 99p, but bearing mind inflation, I probably paid about the same! I think my father built the original back in the 1970s. I remember the V1. The kit is 'pristine' (if a bit cloudy bagged and unopened: The now opened bag: It will have to AP-D, which I think is an e wing, which is what the kit has. I have had a look a @AdrianMF 's build a year or so ago for some ideas and inspiration. - definitely a silk purse out of a sow's ear. After my disastrous Christmas Blitz build hopefully this should go better.
3. I've enjoyed seeing the recent Spitfire XIV WIP posts and now I'm hoping it's ok if I can join in with the craziness? A WIP, with two 1/48 scale Spitfire XIV kits from Airfix and Academy on the go, simultaneously. My thinking is that its not twice the work when you build in stages, and airbrush both kits together. To set the scene, I'm not intending to make good on accuracy by carving out plastic. I might follow others from this parish on this path in future. For now I just want the simple pleasure of building what's in front of me. More or less. Since its a documented thing that the Academy kit isn't very accurate in places, I've been handed a free hand(!) to go off-piste on the authenticity. I'm more than likely not going to worry if my chosen colour scheme is from an 'E' when the decals are supposed to represent a 'C'. Or clipped wings or whatever! The job description for this build is this: cannons sticking out, the five-bladed prop, and must-have elliptical wings. Plus the spinner must be 'sky' (or in my case Tamiya XF21). I'm also using XF21 for the interior. Airfix on left, Academy on right. All the following shots are using XF21 (except the bakelite seats) And a base colour mix of Tamiya LP18 and LP57 for the pilots bakelite seat. Academy on left, Airfix on right. Both kits trade-off on details. The Academy kit is an effortless parts-fit. The Airfix kit has some nice extra details here and there. This pic sums up the contrast pretty fairly: I may use a few AM bits. Maybe the spinner for the Academy, and metal gun barrels for both. The kit spinner looks quite similar to the AM one. The kit blades do seem a little cartoonish, even to my eyes. They'll definitely stay on the spru. Airfix cockpit detail is high....I'd like to do justice and highlight this before closing up the model The Academy instrument panel is lovely. Top half will be painted black, unless I use a Brassin pre-painted one sitting on my shelf........ I could add the copper colour wiring on the left of the panel for accuracy. I don't know if it will improve the model or not. To be decided. One last pic today: the Academy part for behind the pilots seat
4. Greetings from Italy. I took a week off around Easter and to properly relax I decided to build a nice Spitfire in 1/48 scale. The Airfix kit is really very nice and I enjoyed every minute of this job. I made it basically OOB except for Eduard cockpit details set and seat-belts. As usual I painted with airbrush using a mix of Tamiya and Gunze acrylics. Weathering is a mix of oil wash and pastels covered with a thin layer of Gunze spray matt finishing. I would say I'm pretty happy with this one. Enjoy pictures and comments are always welcome. Cheers Andy
5. I nearly bought one of these when they were released but eventually got one from the Wonderland stall at Telford last year. First impressions were a bit mixed, with very thick sprue gates and obstructive ejector pin towers which meant it wasn't easy to get a clean cut at them. There was a moulding flaw on the port fuselage half which needed filling and the edges of the front fuselage halves curved inwards slightly so the joint needed filling as well. The port upper wing half fitted almost perfectly but the starboard one........it was a choice between a good joint at the wing root and the whole panel swept back, or the panel lining up at the leading and trailing edges and a wedge shaped gap at the wing root. Obviously I went for the latter and more filler. I guess it was a 'Friday afternoon' moulding. Although I've heard of them before from Airfix, this was the first one I've experienced. The plastic was rather nasty - both soft and brittle, and I managed to break a couple of parts getting them clear of those sprue gates. I didn't like the transparent wing tips - the fit was poor and it wasn't just clumsiness on my part removing the elliptical tips! As with the Hunter, adhesion of the decals was very poor. I lost one of the stencils before the matt varnish went on and a couple of others started to fall off as I was varnishing. It must be very disappointing for a youngster to spend ages decaling and then find some of them fall off! In the days of transfers, they stuck on so well you had to scrape them off with a fingernail. It was all faintly disappointing after the Defiant, Walrus and Hunter, with some QC issues and some design problems. Whinge over - other than that it went together well and looks every inch a Spitfire. It's from the box apart from the harness, is brushed with Humbrol enamels and makes a nice pair with my now-rather-ancient F22, built from an Eduard boxing of the Airfix plastic which I bought second hand from a stall at a Duxford air display. That put up a fight as well - several of the major parts were badly warped, which is perhaps why it was on sale second hand! Thick sprue gates and ejector pin towers [/IMG] Moulding flaw and filler The model......
6. This isn't going to be a very involved WIP, but I thought I'd put one together upon my return from a few months hiatus from modelling. I have other stalled projects that I should probably be working on, but it has been well established that Spitfire builds bring good luck. So this build includes a high back XVI from an AZ 'Joypack', a low back AZ XVI, and my unfinished Mk I from the Battle of Britain GB. The Mk I depicts the aircraft of 'Titch' Havercoft who flew with 92 Sqn during the Battle of Britain. It just needs its prop, landing gear and a little weathering. Next up is a Mk XVI that I'm planning on finishing as James 'Stocky' Edwards' aircraft from when he commanded 127 Wing in Germany near the end of the war, using this Xtradecal set. This is the first time I've tried using pre-cut canopy masks. Pretty nice! I had to use a little of the new Tamiya 'curves' masking tape since the Techmod masks were designed for the Hasegawa kit. The new Tamiya tape is pretty good stuff too. I brushed on some metalizer in order to do some chipping as Stocky's Spitfire looks pretty beat up in the few pics I found here, and here. The bubble top Mk XVI is going to depict Boleslaw Kaczmarek's aircraft from 302 Sqn using the same Xtradecal sheet. It's good to be back!
7. Having seen Fatboydim's RFI post of the Tamiya Meteor and Doodlebug I recently became fetishistic about a 1:72 flying bomb / Spitfire tipping pair, documented here. I had very little luck finding a 1:72 V1 until, at the Fleet Air Arm model show yesterday I found this: When I suggested doing a WIP Procopius posted "I hope you do, especially if you build the Spitfire XIV; it's one of those kits that "everyone knows", so we never see it being built.". So here you go. A few starter photos to edit in Photobucket while listening to the Arcers omnibus so I'll post this and come back soon.
8. Hi all, Well half term means a week off school, means a a week modelling. Anyway, I brought AZ Legato Spitfire XIV and Freightdogs XIV (same kit), but I thought I could do the same for half the price. So here's the basic concept... Airfix's 1/72 XIX; remove high back, replace with low back, fill d wing panel lines, scribe e wing panel lines, add e wing armament. I've ordered bubble canopies aswell so that'll complete it. Anyway, here's some pics. First line indicating where the low back spine should be, Lower line is where the cut will be, Wax spine made by taking a negative mold of my existing XIV before filling it with wax, Wax spine glued on and filler applied, It's not pretty, Updates should come every evening... Ben.
9. Hi all, Recently got myself Ospreys book about Griffon Spitfire aces, fantastic read with great colour plates. But what I found interesting is it mentions Spitfires lost on operation (20, 7 of which were accidents) and, furthermore, attributes only 3 or 4 of these to enemy aircraft. This is concordant with the information provided here http://www.airhistory.org.uk/spitfire/index.html. It also says that the XIV shot down about 150 aircraft. So the kill ratio of the XIV (against enemy aircraft) was at least 35 to 1! A lot of places give the kill ratio as 7 to 1, which takes into account the aircraft destroyed by flak, friendly fire and mechanical failure/accident. It's possible, some of these figures are inaccurate, however, two sources (the book and spitfire.ukf) both agree on the number of Spitfires lost to enemy aircraft as being 3 or 4. And various internet sources, as well the book, cite the number of XIV air to air kills as 146-150. Just some interesting info for any Spitfans. Regards, Ben.
10. I'm currently working on the new Airfix Spitfire XIX and want to add seatbelts to the seat. Can one use a Sutton-harness in a Spitfire XIX and XIV? And what about a late-war Spitfire IX? Have got a Eduard-set and a Ultracast-set (resin-seats). Hans The Netherlands
11. Hi all, Well I FINALLY finished my second XIVe after I managed to get hold of some matt varnish. Anyway, without further ado... For some reason EB-V is a few millimetres taller that JEJ at the nose, the U/C must have been too long. The colours changed slightly due to my silly humbrol paints, but other than that I'm happy Ben.
12. Hi guys, I'm looking for codes of a couple Spitfires. Pretty self explanatory. Does anyone know the S/N's of these two beauties? http://www.flickr.com/photos/ww2images/6897850983/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/8270787@N07/3870062133/ Regards, Ben.
13. Hi all, Ah at last, half term (in other words a week building). So hot off the work bench is my Spitfire XIVe. Difficult kit. Lots and lots and lots of sanding, filling, filing, re-scribing, cutting, etc... Not to mention the canopy was horrifically translucent. All Humbrol acrylic paints; 163/164 for the upper surfaces, 165 for lower. (I know Spitfire's aren't shiny like this, the matt enamel hasn't yet dried) Ben.
14. Here is another rescue job. One of the first 1/48 scale models I attempted. It did not survive the trip from Geelong to Perth very well. Couple of years ago I dug it out after reading a magazine article on Spitfires in Japan in 1946-47 and realising that I had some appropriate markings left on an Aeromaster Decal sheet. Cleaned off the old paintwork with oven cleaner and then brush painted with Tamiya acrylics and a light wash with watercolours. Unfortunately it is missing the rearview mirror from the windscreen but otherwise one of my favourites. Thanks for looking.
