  1. Time to return to 1/32nd scale.... Am impressive kit, finely moulded in a hardish grey plastic. Why build a model of an aircraft that was built in small numbers and didn't last much beyond 1944? Because it somehow captivated me ever since I built the old Airfix Kit back in my youth. The originals were built locally in Yeoville and but for the non availability of Rolls Royce Peregrine engines it might have been in service before the war started: with a pair of Merlins it might have been as good as the DH Hornet. This project has also been a source of inspiration... https://www.whirlwindfp.org/ Another 1:1 scale kit. The videos are all worth watching. On with the build! The instructions are clear...to a point. They assume the modeler has a degree of knowledge and experience. The cockpit is the start..... There are very few positive location points and great care is needed, as in step 4 where the two bulkheads have to be glued into the fuselage before much else goes in. Looking at the cockpit of the actual aircraft the layout is chaotic, with instruments here and there. The moral has to be test fit, sand if needed and test again! The paint is Tamyia interior green, it mat be a bit dark when compared with the paint used on the replica..... The project's website has many videos, No 14 is particularly good at this stage as it details the cockpit fit out. More over the next few weeks...!
  2. The Special Hobby 1/72-scale D-558-1 is a quality kit. It comprises 31 pieces in soft gray styrene, 8 in resin (wheels, nose gear flap, intake cone, interior rear wheel well), and 21 photoetch (cockpit details, rear landing gear flaps). There are two versions of clear canopy: the bubble and more streamlined design. You need 6 grams of ballast to fit into a very narrow spot in the nose (I’m not sure a substance of sufficient density exists on Earth), but I was able to make do with a larger weight placed behind the cockpit. I used Tamiya flat red for the base coat and Alclad White Aluminum for the metallics, gave it a pinwash with AK 2071 in the panel lines, AK 2072 on control surfaces, and Tamiya black panel liner for the landing gear. Humbrol Maskol worked great for masking the canopy. Finished with Alclad Semi-Gloss Klear Kote to give it a bit of shine. Thanks for looking!
  3. I’ve decided after building two Airfix kits in succession (Spitfire and P-40) that I would branch out and build my first Special Hobby kit. It’s the 1/72 scale Folland Gnat F Mk.I “British Single Seaters” No. SH 72322:- These are the options in the kit:- I’m not sure that any other than the grey/green camouflaged versions actually flew. Perhaps there are some experts out there in Britmodellerland who could confirm or disprove that. In any case, I’ve decided to go with the kit option of XN326 with the pointy radar nose. It’s not quite as pretty as the round-nosed one (XM740), but it’s a bit more interesting and it will provide a nice contrast with my Red Arrows Gnat T.1. That aircraft I made about 35 years ago from the old-tool Airfix kit. I have another identical kit to build as that option in a few days when I've finished this one 🤣. So, I’ll build this one:- The box open-ended box ☹️ contents. Sprue A:- Sprue B:- The transparencies:- This spine transparency isn’t used in my option:- Neither are these resin parts:- Hopefully I’ll make a start in the next day or so and will keep you posted. Before I go, I’d like to buy some MRP paints for this. Hannants don’t stock them. I can only find a couple of places that sell them online but they are unknown to me. Would any of you Britmodellers have any recommendations for a trustworthy supplier of MRP paints online? Thanks in anticipation and happy modelling, Keith.
  4. Hi, I am starting a Tempest project, and was wondering a few things. The subject I wish to do is an aircraft from 56 Squadron, serial EJ533 in Sep 1944. I'm trying to find out if the aircraft would still have the invasion stripes, or if the stripes were removed, or perhaps there were just the half portion under the fuselage? Tia Brad
  5. I have just opened the Special Hobby 1/72 kit of this a/c and found that it covers three variants. The basic a/c, one with modifed ailerons and the last, which has completely different, untapered, wing and tail and was allegedly used for research into reaction controls. This last version aroused my curiosity as I had never heard of this but when I went looking for more information and pictures all I could find was a description saying that the wingtips were extended to house the controls and pictures which make it look as if it has a parallel chord wing like the one in the kit, but looking at the USAF markings makes me think it is an optical illusion. http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/howard_mason3/x-1b/ Can anybody please tell me more and if Special Hobby have got it wrong? John PS. Does anybody know the purpose of the Naca inlet shaped parts that were glued (apparently) to the ailerons. Were they only fitted for the reaction control flights? Could it be that they were planning to fly at extreme altitude where the aerodynamic surfaces would be less effective and this was an attempt to increase that effectiveness if the RCS didn't work?
  6. My entry to the Group Build is the Special Hobby kit of the Mustang Mark 1, in 1/72nd scale. It is from 430 Squadron, one of a number of RCAF squadrons tasked with low level reconnaissance during this period. I will be using the DPCasper decals for Operation Bodenplatte, which includes one of these aircraft, listed as being at Eindhoven when the Luftwaffe attack occurred. Here is the box top:- The kit is a little unusual, as it contains two major sprues, each with a full set of fuselages, wings and tailplanes. To get the Mk. 1, you have to "cross kit" the fuselages from one sprue with the wings and tailplanes from the other. You also have to cut out the cannon from the wings and replace them with resin inserts, as the Mk. 1 had six machine guns in the wings, instead of the mark 1A's four cannon (as well as two in the fuselage, on either side of the nose). Here are the sprues:- The kit also has a nice bit of resin, not just for the wings, but also to dress up the cockpit, and replacement resin wheels (with "CMK" marked on the base). Thanks for looking! Philip
