  1. First time at the bench for a few weeks Monday after all the hot weather etc. Made a start weeks ago and primed and painted bits, finally managed to assemble a few bits and get the engine looking something like. Will probably add some wiring and pipes for detail once the engine is mated to the chassis and get a bit of weathering done.
  2. Here's another from my pen of excruciatingly long builds. This one is so long that I can't actually remember when it was started - 5, 6 years? It's almost been finished once only for me to realise the body colour wasn't accurate. So, stripped and resprayed with Tamiya TS-17 Gloss Aluminium and a clear coat of Tamiya TS-13 Clear. Buffed with Micro Mesh polishing cloths (4000 up to 12000) and finished with all three grades of Tamiya polishing compounds. Some very light weathering, mostly with AK Interactive 'Dark'. This model is boxed as a Protar 'SWIFT' model and it was only the other day that I discovered that Protar released these as 'easier' for construction and less amount of parts. The moulding is good... although the engine block suffers perhaps with the usual Protar softness. I have done a good deal of super detailing, wiring, plumbing and more scratch building on this model than i've ever done before. Carbon decals from both Model Factory Hiro (exhausts) and Studio 27 (front mudguard) replace the Protar efforts which, by the way, are HUGE in pattern. As I destroyed the original 'Senna' markings I had some others made, more about them in another post of mine. I know, the senna markings are missing on this side. I'm waiting for some further bespoke ones to arrive.
  3. I managed to snag this for a really good price on Ebay about 4 or 5 years ago and I've slowly been adding some extras to the stash over time. I think it's finally time to get cracking. It's older brother will have to wait for a little longer. Kit was all as-new and sealed in the bags. Looks good. Extras are the Top Studio cockpit set... Top Studio detail-up set... Hobby Design decals and tyre mask... And some Gravity Colors paint. Which from a test spray, matches the Hobby Design decals nicely. My current plan is to build 'ready-to-race'. So bodywork on, and keep the detailing predominantly on the outside. Time at the bench is quite sporadic, and I'm _very_ slow anyway, so this make take some time. 🐌
  4. Hi Guys, Having finished a Revell BMW 507 last week I had the choice to start working on: - a diorama I have started (only thing is.. next step is photo etching, bit anxious to start that); or: - something I've been thinking of for more than a year, a Formula one car by Tamiya, scale 1/12. After quite a bit of thought I've chosen the latter, which choice was made easier knowing that a beautiful aftermarket-set was just released for a beautiful and almost legendary car. I'll build the McLaren MP4/6 powered by the 12-cilinder RA121-E. Honda managed to squeeze 720 horsepower out of this 3,5 liter V12 engine. This car type was driven by Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger. Typically I'll build Senna's car. In 1991 he scored his third and last F1 championship title. For more info on the MP4/6 see Wikipedia. (Courtesy of Wikipedia Commons) I hope you guys will help me with England-based knowledge on McLaren's F1 team and this car in particular. And I hope that you'll bear with me because it will be a very long build. I'll build this model as detailed as I reasonably can. These parts have already been ordered: - Tamiya's kit. - Top Studio's full aftermarket set, consisting of 8 subsets. - Marlboro decals. - 3 reference books. Future purchases: - Dry transfers for the tires. - Some Alclad paints. - McLaren transparent-orange-red paint. - Several screws, bolts, washers etc. - Carbon fibre decals. - Optionally: replacement wheels. To give an idea of the level of detail provided by Top Studio's masterful set, here a couple of pictures; the original vehicle and Top Studio's parts. All non-grey parts are Top Studio's. I'll try detailing a bit further, using added bolts et cetera. When the orders will have arrived I'll post pictures. In this topic all and any critique is welcome, do feel free to comment whenever you see something completely or detailedly wrong. I intend to push my limits in this build and I'll certainly need you guys to get the most out of it.
  5. Here's my first motorbike kit, I enjoyed it a lot. Decals are from blue stuff.
  6. Here's the finished 1/12 McLaren MP4/6. An original kit from 1991 with Marlboro decals from TBD. The problems is the common rear tires which shrunk and hardened, causing cracks and didn't fit well on the rims. Never could find a replacement.
  7. As the title says its the Tamiya Lotus 99T. I'm not one for fine detailing things(dont have the skill yet), so to spice things up a bit i bought the Studio 27 Carbon decal set, a set of Camel decals (because they never look right without the ciggie ones) and a Goodyear tyre stencil to spray onto the tyres for that little bit of authenticity Really nice kit to build, except for the rear wing causing me massive problems. It cant be completely built and then attached to the engine it has to be built onto the engine so i had to part build it, spray then try and attach to the engine. When glue and paint mix you know what happens then once fitted i noticed it was wonky so i had to break it apart and have another go making even more mess with the glue. Doesnt notice too much in the photos but can be seen slightly on the inside of the end plates. The silver paint on the "Honda" on the engine isnt great either, im just no good at fine details that small I used all Tamiya paints and body was sprayed using Tamiya rattle cans. Hope you enjoy, thanks for looking.
  8. Evening all. Welcome to my little corner of BritModeller; long time viewer, first time post(er). So... My MP4/4. I had previously built the MP4/23 that Degostini had released which went okay but was pretty giddy about this release. For anyone that loves F1, I think a part of us were all a fan of Senna and to be able to build this iconic machine was a must. Juggling a young family and starting design business meant I had the luxury of having ALL the pieces arrive month by month and no time to build it... Until now... Mwah ha ha! So, enough of the waffle, on to my attempt to build this 1:8th scale monster!
  9. This is a build to celebrate the life of ayrton senna and what he archived in formula one during his career. my main focus is on his first championship this for today is just a teaser shot of tomorrows unveiling This first picture is not mine but I have got permission to use it from the artist Now here is my car, well what i want to show of it now anyway Thank you for looking Cheers shaun
  10. A tribute to one of the best drivers to have been in F1 This i a tribute build to commemorate the day that possibly the best driver on the planet died doing what he loved, and in my opinion it was the best way (in a weird way) for him to go and it is ofcourse Ayrton Senna. It was 20 years ago on May 1st 2014 that the three time world champion lost his life doing probably one of the things he truely loved, racing the fastest cars against the fastest drivers in the world, but on that faitful day in northern italy on the 7th lap of the San Marino GP Senna lost control of his williams fw16 and collided with the barriers at tamburello, this was by no means the first time he had crashed in his career but for some reason on that day a suspension part had broke off and hit him giving him injuries that he would not recover from. Now beings that i was only 4 when all this happened i was unaware of most of it untill i got older and looked it up for myself and looked into the man that he was and from then i have been hooked on everything Senna so with all the tricks and tips i have picked up along the way from fellow Bmers i am this year going to try and modify the tamiya mclaren mp4-4 into the Japanese GP verion that Senna won his first title in here is where i started and just a quick sorry for first the long intro and also the amount of photos. I am planning to finish?unveil this build on the 1/5/14 The box: And now the peices that will be involved in making this a (hopefully) great replica: Now the Senna figure i made a while ago: And now where i am up to with the build: these parts here C4 will be used to modify the turbo intake to the Japan spec like so Along with that the intake holes on the body need to be filled And the radiator outlets changed A peice of plasticard was used to make up the gap from where the outlet should be to where it is now This is where i am up to as of last night on the body but i have been cracking on with the floor pan and monocoque Thank you very much for looking and i hope that i can get it done on time Cheers shaun
  11. Ayrton Senna's 1993 Mclaren MP4-8 I started this in november last year but never completed the driver figure until a few days ago through fear of cocking it up but finally mustard up the courage to do it and im quite pleased how its turned out, some may spot that his visor isnt correct but at the time that was the choose to do it also its not that noticeable in real life.
