  1. This is the old Supermodel kit of the Blohm und Voss 138 Seedrache, affectionately nicknamed Der Fliegende Holzschuh (The Flying Clog), which has been in my stash so long it predates the re-released version by Revell (which includes much better painting instructions and decals). I've built it as CB+UA, which operated out of the Luftwaffe Test Centre at Travemünde, near Lübeck, Germany. It was rigged for mine-clearing, with a large conductive ring around the fuselage: The kit comes with parts for this set-up, though the Supermodel decals are not for this aircraft. Several sources on-line refer to this as a "degaussing ring", but its function was exactly the opposite of degaussing--it was intended to generate a magnetic field that would trick magnetic mines into detonating as the aircraft passed overhead. So more of a gaussing ring, really. I used the Revell instructions (which are available on-line from Scalemates) and Heinz Nowarra's book for reference. Paints are from Sovereign Hobbies Colourcoats (first time, worked very well for me), and decals are a mix of kit Balkenkreuze, Fantasy Printshop letters, and swastikas and white lines from Xtradecal. A tiny amount of scratch building included the propeller discs for the "in-flight" model, some brass wire on the outboard air intakes, and monofilament for the aerials and the wire connections/supports on the ring. The stand is an old Airfix stand with a couple of magnets in it, mated to a couple of magnets inside the fuselage. Display base from Coastal Kits. Here it is. I confess to finding the RLM72/73 splinter camouflage frustrating, because of the low contrast--all that masking, and next to nothing to show for it! It's slightly more evident in the model than in the photographs, but not a great deal. For the interior, I tried to roughly emulate the photographs in Nowarra's book, issuing the navigator with a map and strewing some papers on the wireless operator's table. Not much of it is visible in the final model however. Perhaps just as well, since my wireless operator looks like he has a dislocated shoulder!
  2. Wolfpack Design has released (Academy plastic) a 1/48th Sikorsky MH-53E Sea Dragon JMSDF kit - ref. WP14802 Source: http://www.wolfpack-d.com/catalog/htm/wp14802.html V.P.
  3. OK, I have had another crazy idea (it just might work) for a MH-53E as Marine One. I have an italeri VH-71 Marine One which is being used elsewhere, so I have the spare decals and instructions plus a second set of decals to stretch the stripes. My main question is which green to use as all the pictures of Marine One are of a deep green not drab olive and all the blogs and posts I've read mention green but don't say which green! I eagerly await your response with gratitude....
