  1. Couple of months ago I have launched an A-12 Oxcart build based on 1:72 Italeri/Testors kit. Although I did significant progress on the kitbash I was not quite happy with never ending sanding/filling process which you can follow in below thread: After getting my 3D resin printer as birthday gift from my wife and daughters I have decided to print first the kit replacement parts. But of course I need to have the digital models to print out. Therefore I have started to search best reference drawings to be used in 3D modelling. Also I have imported my own 3 view drawings to CAD. This will be very challenging project and at the end I hope the result will worth all the efforts 🤔 By the way, I did not give up A-12 kitbash. It continues in parallel 😁 I hope you will enjoy this adventure and share your comments about the progress. Serkan
  2. Hello all! I'm pleased to present my latest effort, the Revell 1/72 SR-71. The Blackbird is an awesome machine and I'm really pleased to have this one on the shelf, it's just such a cool looking aircraft. The kit is fairly simple, there aren't many parts, though I picked the Revell version because it came with a nicely detailed cockpit and pilots, even though you can't really see them! I made the kit without any extra scratch building, though sanded off the panel lines and rescribed the whole thing. It also needed a thorough filling and sanding job on the seams on the underside. I used an airbrush for most of the painting with a matt black preshade followed by very dark greys - Tamiya rubber black and nato black. The decals were interesting! They go down really well and didn't have any trouble with silvering but the instructions are all over the place - basically ignore the numbering - and a few are reversed; bonus points if you can spot these! Finally she was weathered with a thinned oil paint light grey panel line wash and some ground-up pastel pigment dry brushed on. It still needs a stand to finish off but thought I'd get the RFI up anyway, I'll add an extra photo when I finally get around to it. Thanks to everyone who had the patience to follow along (things did not move quickly on this build!) and who provided comments and encouragement along the way, the WIP is here: Anyway, enough from me, enjoy the snaps!

  5. Welcome one and all to my next build, Revell's venerable 1/72 SR-71 Blackbird. I've seen some fantastic 48th scale blackbirds built around these parts in the last few months and was inspired to have a go at my own version of this amazing aircraft. I pondered long and hard at which kit to buy as all the 1/72 versions seem to have their issues... In the end Revell's boxing was relatively cheap, quick to be delivered and had a nice cockpit, with pilots(!), which I'm a sucker for, even if i they're going to be pretty much invisible. The kit turned up in a slightly battered state, though the box art is lovely: Everything is in black plastic, there are raised panel lines, a bit of flash and first impression is that the cockpit, indeed, is great, but the rest is going to need wrestling together. I'm already envisaging a fair bit of sanding and filling and that'll probably lead to a load of rescribing, how much I'm not sure yet, but I'm really keen to get a clean, crisp finish which is going to require a fair bit of elbow grease! So far I've just got the cockpit and pilots done. This was a mix of airbrushing the base coats followed by detail painting, shading and highlighting with brushes. Not going to see much of this with the canopies on but at least I'll know the pilots are well turned out in there! I'll try and keep regular updates going on this one but won't bore you with too many gory details of ill fitting parts and lashings of sprue goo... Thanks for dropping by! Sam
  6. Hi all, Here is another Blackbird topic from me. In this WIP I will present the improvements/modifications I am planning to do on recently released 1:48 Revell SR-71A using the 3D printed parts I modeled for my other ongoing Blackbird/Oxcart projects. I will not go in detail for the kit review because recently @Mike posted an excellent review here: and @Alan P did a great WIP and RFI here: Here are some pictures of boxart and the sprues: The built Blackbird is the 1:48 Italeri/Testors kit which is used currently for 1:48 A-12B "Titanium Goose" conversion reported here: I hope you will enjoy this build. 7. On display in the Revell stand at the Nurnberg Toy Fair 2020. Revell is to release a new tool 1/48th Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird kit in 2021 (or later as Revell is not famous for the respect of such deadlines). 8. Finally time to post my RFI of my Blackbird build completed and in its Barn. I toyed with Sled Shed and Habu Hut but settled on Blackbird Barn! it’s the old Italeri kit that I picked up before the Revell one came out. Not as detailed but I added lights and wanted the diorama more than the stand alone jet. Thanks to many, including @Alan P, @Serkan Sen, @billn53 and many others who have supported along the way. The shed and start cart, step and other bits are scratch built She is finished as 64-17974 in the late black and red scheme of the mid 80s at Det 4. Ichi Ban herself, as displayed at the Mildenhall Airfete in 84, when I was there watching. Decals are from the Caracal set. Even got a pilots autograph! So all done now - thanks for looking The build can be found at And the Shed build
  9. I remember reading books as a kid in the late 70s that hinted about the instance of a legendary black jet that went faster than any other. Then one day in the early 80s I went to a Mildenhall Airfete and there she was, sitting on static display but looking like she was going very fast. Then over the next few years she took to the air at these shows, coming in hot from an Atlantic crossing record attempt, and that legendary take off with a string of diamonds from the afterburners. I got over to the pilots on the static line up for an autograph. The Sled, the Habu or just the Blackbird. I thought a model of one of these was going to be out of my place range, the Revell talked about a new kit & the Italeri kits dropped their price on eBay. So I got one it’s a bit old & a bit battered (some might say rather like the builder). The kit had a few bits missing but the previous owner had thrown in some extra part that look to have come from either another Italeri or a Testors kit. So I have 4 engine & outer wing sections, spare glazing & two noses! You forget just the size of a Blackbird. So what is the plan? Well I like the late model very low viz Blackbirds. Det 4 at Mildenhall is a given, so a diorama of the Blackbird pre flight. I have been doing some building to make the shed too. So one of these But canopies open & getting ready to go. I have had a questions thread & have been putting some build updates on another thread but have been persuaded to start a WIP. Thanks to @e8n2, @Antti_K, @71chally, @JeffreyK, @LorenSharp and @Alan P for their help & advice so far. Thanks for looking in
  10. With the news that the long awaited Revell rendering of the SR-71 has finally started landing at the homes of folks in nations far and wide, naturally there is an uptick in folks wanting to commence builds of this subject matter. In fact three managed to make their way to my abode and I plan to start building one in the near future. Naturally, this has meant that ’ve decided to inflict maximum pain on myself and choose to build the old Italeri SR offering instead. Why I hear you cry? To be honest, there are several reasons. One is that I want to hone my scribing skills and the raised panel lines of the old Italeri kit offers ample opportunity to refine those skills whilst being relatively low on complexity. The second is that I can also use it as a (very large) paint mule to try and test techniques ahead of tackling the Revell. The third reason being that whilst the new Revell tackles the ‘A’ model, the Italeri offers the opportunity to build the ‘B’ and ‘C’ models too. I’ve long had a fascination for this incredible feat of design and engineering. As Mike alluded in his excellent review on this very forum, the Blackbird would still look futuristic if it rolled out of the hanger for the first time today, which makes it all the more incredible to think that this aircrafts gestation can be traced back to the 1950’s. Having accumulated and read many books on the aircraft over the years and even obtained a small piece of titanium taken from the airframe of Super Skater and having a dear friend whose company recreated the mounting pod for the D-21 drone and display stands for the M-21 on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle and had the opportunity to crawl all over that aircraft (he also obtained the piece of titanium that I have too). For this build I have a small selection of aftermarket, the Metallic Details nose correction set, the Squadron Products cockpit set (I’ll use the pilots cockpit section, the seats and the glare shied). I also have the Caracal Decal sets for aircraft too. I’m somewhat undecided as to which one to build at present. Current thoughts are to do one of the NASA schemes, but there is also an opportunity to do the ‘B*stard’ or ‘two aircraft flying in close formation’ SR-71C. So, first things first, scribing. I’ve made a start and have a good many of the various pieces of plastic scribed. I do not know whether this is unique to the Italeri kit, but I am noting some delaminating of the surface from the scribed areas. I’d say I am around 75% done with the scribing, and have started knocking back the little peaks that the troughs created by scribing create. After that I will use a toothbrush and some alcohol to clean the plastic, then run some liquid poly into the scribe areas to level them out. I’ve read that the build process can be made easier if you glue the top halves of the fuselage together first. Having done a test fit, it would appear that the cockpit section is a little wider than the section that butt joins behind it. I’m thinking that I could use superglue and squeeze the halves into alignment, then run liquid poly to secure the join, or build as per the instructions and break out the filler if needed. Anyway, tools down the time being, the F1 is on…
  11. As my another ongoing Blackbird project is close to end and all necessary parts for this one were built during that project I decided to launch a parallel thread for M/D-21. This build will include all resin parts I casted for A-12 here: There will be some addons on D-21 Tagboard, namely the nose and tail cones used during drone transportation. Serkan

  13. During Ced's recent MD-21 build I have decided to build some Blackbird versions using the kits in my stash. But I was not aware that all available models have major issues to be corrected to build a real Blackbird (whatever the version is). After spending couple of weeks for searching the reference materials (pictures and drawings) I have decided to go with my own drawings based on available pictures and my engineering judgements. Here I would like to share my findings as well as the pictures of my drawings and comparison results. Of course all feedback and comments are very important to build each of these legendary aircrafts as accurate as possible. Serkan
  14. On our way home from California, we stopped in Palmdale for a quick visit to the Palmdale Airpark and Blackbird Airpark. These are located on the edge of Palmdale Regional Airport and the famous Plant 42. The Palmdale Airpark (it isn't a museum yet) is run by the City of Palmdale and currently has 20 airframes on outside display in a landscaped setting. There are no facilities, but the adjacent Blackbird Airpark has a small gift shop and restrooms, and has three airframes on outside display. Entrance to both is free. Here are some photos of selected airframes. While quite open, space is cramped and there are some very solid and a little too high concrete bollards in front of the aircraft. Luckily, there were no other visitors when I was there. 15. Howdy, Which 1/72 Blackbird kit, if any, offers the option for the B model trainer? I know at least 1/48 kit does. Thank you folks!
  16. SR-71 BlackBird Jet Nozzles 1:72 Metallic Details The Lockheed SR-71 was the ultimate in fast reconnaissance aircraft fielded by the USAF. With a top speed over Mach 3 (which was never actually disclosed) the aircraft needed a new at the tine Pratt & Whitney J58 engine. The exhausts and afterburner provided quite a distinguishable feature on the air frame. At speeds of over mach three the rotating parts of the engine produced only drag with the afterburner providing 100% of thrust. As with many kits the engine molding while OK in plastic cant compare with the castings available in resin. This new set fro Metallic Details is a four part affair which needs only minimal cleaning up before fitting together. The casting is first rate and these will make your finished model realy pop. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  17. Well, just to show that I really do build bits and pieces, here is a gathering of recent builds (easier than starting separate threads for each). Mainly Out of The Box. The main aftermarket stuff is added bang-seats, paint and tamiya tape! The MPM X15-A2. (pocket money scale). Not my preferred scale but this is a lovely little kit. First attempt at foiling on the tanks. 20161102_113443-1 20161102_113943-1 20161102_114118-1 Hasegawa He-162. (1:48) This was a lovely little build which added to my interest in German WW2 jets. 20161103_201838-1 20161103_201921-1 The old Tamiya SHAR FRS1. (1:48). Nothing like XDSG! A small wrestling match was entered into here, but overall the kit goes together well. Not the nicest cockpit, so a bang seat was added. 20161018_092424-1 20161017_221613-1 20161017_221424 Revell SEPECAT Jag. (1:48). Inspiration for this came from the old Illustrated Encyclopedia of Aircraft (80's) and the loadout reflects this. 20160714_172044 20160714_172006 Another old Tamiya kit, the A-10! (1:48). After reading about the activities out of "Cajun West" in GW1, the AC were massively loaded for the journey out to the op area, and on the way they'd drop dumb bombs on "Home Depot" before carrying on with the rest of the ord. I was tempted to do the RFOA-10G variant, which is still tempting... The lizard scheme was too tempting though. 20161103_201548-1 20161103_201629-1 20161103_201709-1 Tamiya F-117. (1:48) 20161103_203344-1 Airfix Hawk. (1:48) As a re-introduction to the new AFX kits, these have come as a pleasant surprise! Hope you have enjoyed this little journey through part of the display case.
