  1. Hi Everyone, Here are some of my photos from the Eastbourne airshow, I've tried to pick my favourites out of the almost 1,000 photos I took, but still this is going to be very photo heavy. If you want to view the full 135 photos, they are in an album on my facebook, linked here : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.488656594634727.1073741851.100004711722357&type=1&l=0724244a56 Anyway lets kick off the photos, I hope you like them. I'm trying to persuade my missus to let me go to either Bournemouth or Shoreham airshow (preferably Bournemouth) this weekend. Chinook Jet Provost Breitling Wingwalkers Typhoon Spitfire MiG-15 Grob Tutor Bulldog Sea King Eastbourne's Tamar class Lifeboat (At High Speed) Hawk T.2 Blenheim Norwegian Vampires P-51 Mustang "Ferocious Frankie" Vulcan XH558 Dakota Patrouille Reva The Blades Red Arrows Anyway, thats all of the photos I'm going to post. You can view the rest on the facebook link at the top. These photos were all taken with a Canon EOS 20D DSLR body with a 100 - 400 mm canon lens stuck on the front of it. Boy was that heavy without a tripod, but made life easier when tracking the planes. They have all been edited to improve colour balance etc. Please let me know what you think. All the best, Rick
  2. With the 2015 show just around the corner I thought I better pull my finger out and post some of my 2014 shots! 4. Ambitious? Maybe too much for me, but ... two Airfix Spitfires in 1/72 The plastic ... The schemes will be from diffferent XtraDecal sets, LO-H, and LO-P ... LO-P is a personal choice from my Il2 days, and LO-H apeals because a) it's the same squadron and it was active (just) in the time frame of this GB. If anybody knows the aircraft, I would love to know where XtraDecal found their reference for LO-P Not an immediate problem, but one that will crop up - where do I find Sky Blue paint? The only colour I've seen listed so far is from the Tamiya range, which probably isn't matched to "BS381 No1" XtraDecal suggest Humbrol 122 Pale Blue, which (AFIK) is discontinued, but may be a match for FS15622 (Israeli Pale Blue). Any thoughts?
  5. The answer is: no! (to me, at least ) Few words on the kit: it's well known, and as Troy Smith pointed out in my WIP thread (see here if you're interested), has some shape issues, concerning mainly wings and fuselage shape. I didn't feel like I was able to fix them, though, so I decided to build this kit as an experiment for various techniques such as, for instance, salt chipping (first time ever for me), an doing my own mask for roundels. No aftermarkets used, but definitely some scratch - building involved: - cables and wires and few other details inside the cockpit - radio switches box (cockpit again) - brake lines on undercarriages - pitot tube (using a prescription needle) - back canopy thermoformed, as the kit one is too wide and tends to break at the minimum pressure - IFF aerials, using hair probably something else, but I don't remember now. Roundels, fin flag and code letters were airbrushed, using self made masks. The only kit decals I've used are the serial numbers and the stencils. The AC I intended to reproduce is this: A quite battered one, indeed. Here are the pics: Weathering details Bottom view r More detail pics to follow
  6. After its 1/48th Spitfire Mk.IX, Eduard is to release a limited edition Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII - ref.? Source, p.5: http://www.eduard.com/store/out/media/InfoEduard/archive/2014/info-eduard-2014-01CZ.pdf V.P.
  7. Hi everybody; here we go, back to aircraft modelling after a figure painting interlude. This time it's Tamiya Spitfire Mk Vb in 1/48, my first Tamiya kit and second Spit ever (first one dates back an era or so ... ). The idea is to do an OOB build, meaning that I will not use aftermarkets, but I intend to do some scratchbuilding. Here's the kit boxart Sprue shots I'll be doing this Aircraft (which is one of the options of the kit) So I started with a quick dryfit of the main parts: fuselage Wings Wings to fuselage, showing a couple of points that will require a minimum amount of tidying up: With tail planes fitted I'll be largely copying from Stix's thread (here) for this build. Please feel free to add any comments/contributions to the thread; as usual, I'm mainly doing it to learn from others. Next post is showing some initial surgery
  8. So after taking several months between my builds, here's the second of the Spitfires I got from the D-day anniversary offers on the Airfix website barely three weeks after the first. Nice, easy build finished in the Swedish scheme. Only down point was the decals were a bit thick and took some effort to settle nicely, though they would not go into the panel lines. Brush painted with Humbrol enamel, I've heard the colour match isn't perfect but I like the shade and I'm not worried too much about that level of accuracy. This was my second attempt at a panel wash using the Humbrol black wash. Its perhaps a little heavy for some but as its my first success its hard to be in any way upset about it. I've not attempted any weathering as yet and these seem to have been kept very clean from what I've seen so I didn't see any reason to make this my first attempt. Onto some pics. I really need to find a better set up for my photos. In all I'm extremely happy with how this one turned out. EDIT: Forgot to say, the underside camera lenses fell out of place when I was trying to take a scrap of paint off them. Frustration.
  9. Spitfire MkI/II 1:32 Pavla Although having a number of problems from the box, the Revell 1:32 MkI/II Spitfire is still a very nice kit. Since there is always room from improvement a number of manufacturers have released correction sets and detail sets. With this in mind Pavla has released three new sets to improve the cockpit area. All three sets are contained in a blister pack with card backing and header. The first pack contains a replacement seat, which looks a lot closer to the real metal seat, but is still not 100% correct, although the missing detail on the seat back will probably be covered by the seatbelts. The second pack contains a replacement access door. This is very nicely moulded with some very fine surface detail on the outer skin and nice rib detail on the interior. The door does not come with a moulded on crowbar, nor is any provided, which, I believe is correct for this era. The final set contains the cockpit sidewalls, which are drop in replacements. As per the other sets the mouldings are very well moulded, with lots of detail such as the cabling between electrical boxes, the longerons, stringers and frames, along with numerous smaller details. Some careful painting and the use of washes will pay dividends in making these details pop. In addition to the sidewalls the set comes with separate throttle quadrant, oxygen bottles and trim wheels, another smaller oxygen style bottle and the undercarriage control box and lever. Conclusion Pavla have produced some very nice detail in these three sets. I thinking the sidewalls are the best of the bunch, although the door is a nice easy addition. I’m not sure when the metal seat was used, but if the aircraft you’re modelling uses this style then go for it. Highly recommended Review sample courtesy of
  10. Supermarine Spitfire Mk.24 PK724. This was built as a Mk.22 at Castle Bromwich in early 1946. This was one of 54 incomplete Spitfire Mk.22 airframes moved to South Marston where they were completed as Mk.24s. The Mk.24, was similar to the Mk.22 except that it had an increased fuel capacity, with two fuel tanks of 33 gal each installed in the rear fuselage. There were also zero-point fittings for rocket projectiles under the wings. All had the larger "Spiteful" tail units: modifications were also made to the trim tab gearings in order to perfect the F Mk 24's handling characteristics. This aircraft never saw much RAF service in fact when examined in 1968 had only flown for 7 hours, with 20 hours on the engine. This is one of only 3 Mk.24 Spitfires to survive. A full history can be found here on the RAF Museum's web site. Pics thanks to Ian (Depressed Lemur) at The RAF Museum Hendon.
  11. I usually shy away from building overly popular subjects. Not only are they built frequently, but seeing as they are so many people's favority aircraft, how can my build live up to everyone's expectations? I suppose I shouldn't concern myself too much with what other people think. Anyway, I wanted to start a Spitfire collection, and this early Mk.I is perhaps a less built example, and a fitting variant to start my Spitfire collection off with. The pre-war Spits seems to have been quite clean examples, so I tried to duplicate the extremely subtle weathering as seen in the 8 or so photographs I could find of 19 Squadron (WZ codes) Spits. The build is mostly OOB. I drilled holes into the exhaust stubs, made seatbelts with strips of masking tape and made the antenae wire with streched sprue painted black. I painted the walkway lines instead of using the provided decals, though I'm not sure if it looks better that the decals would have or not. I also did not use the gun port cover decals, as I cannot find photographic evidence of 19 Squadron planes having these. And lastly I I filled the hole on the starboard side of the aft fuselage as I cannot find a photograph of these Spits having this hole, or the red square cover I am supposed to be sticking on. My intention was very subtle weathering, though it probably came out a bit overdone. I tried a paint chipping effect on the root of the port wing (I can see this on some 19 Squadron pre-war Spits) by applying paint with a sponge. I added a little bit of grey to my Humbrol 11, as I have read (on this very forum) that it isn't supposed to be bare metal silver, but rather the color of the primer under the paint cote, which looks like a dull silver to my eye. I added oil sludge by the fuel tank fore of the cockpit as I see on some photos (though I don't know what this is). You can probably barely notice it on my example. Lastly I added some oil sludge on the underside of the wings aft of the engine, this will probably also be barely noticable. I added this because I have not seen many Spit wings which have a perfectly clean underside, even on modern day "clean" Spits I can see this. The rest has been done as the instructions stated, which seemed to be correct with my limited knowledge on the subject. I hope it's enjoyable to look at.
  12. Hi everybody, today a few pic`s of my HobbyBoss Spit Vb in 1/32. A superb kit , quite easy to build. It fits very well. Have fun All the best Andy
  13. Hello All, My interpretation of 79 Sqn RAAF Spitfire VIII (yes I know the kit is really a Mk IXe). Fun to build and fun to paint -- happy days! Thanks for looking and thanks for commenting. Good Modelling all Ian
  14. I don't have the book Spitfire Saga, Can anyone help with a serial number and Code letter for Rodney's MK IXc in North Africa. Also could anyone confirm it was in desert cammo Thanks Sean
  15. Build 19 It's no Eduard kit but it looks to be better than the Revell Spit I build last year. The canopy is discoloured and not what I'd call clear so I might crash mould a new one. Price: £2.12 eBay
  16. Hi all, So this is my second RFI but my first WIP. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234979665-148-spitfire-vbmalta/ It's not my normal scale and my first try ant any sort of detail like this and scratch building (very tiny bit in the cockpit but it counts). The kit is the old tool airfix vb.... not the best kit in the world but it came out OK, I definitely learnt a lot (like buy the new tool one). So the aircraft! Spit vb from malta flown by this chap Squadron leader johnny lynch, an American pilot who joined the Eagle squadrons then transfered to malta, after that he went on to fly in the USAAF. He was also given the accolade of malta's 1000th kill after a offensive patrol over sicily. Few pictures of the ac: More information on the chap can be found here http://acesofww2.com/USA/aces/lynch/ So few bit with the ac, the letter codes are to far forward and the 'maltas 1000th' is way over sized, but I hand paint that and need a smaller paint brush! Letter codes were done using tape and I am happy with how they turned out apart from size and placement, ok for a first go. All painted with hairy stick and tamiya paints..... so I suppose it's on to the pictures. .... So there she is... its blue.... I know there is lots of talk over colours of malta planes but this is also a strong possibility. Weathering is a mix of enamels and pastals. I wanted it to look very well used as this reflects what the island went through, and is in line with the blow pictures. All comments welcome! Can I just say a last few points, big thanks to all who looked in on the wip it really helped! A massive thank you to Tony O'toole who gave me a lot of pointers and who's fantastic builds have inspired this. Also I would like to dedicate this to malta and all that served on her and lived there during the war as with out them and their struggle the Med may have been a very different place! Rob
  17. Afternoon all. My 2nd attempt at this kit. Its PCM's 1/32 Spitfire XIVc completed OOB except for machined cannon barrels and aftermarket cockpit door. Finished with Tamiya spraycans and light weathering. Great kit too build with fantastic resin cockpit and beautiful Cartograph decals. All comments welcome.
  18. Hi folks,a return to a past question for the codes worn by Spitfire X4275 ZD-? of 222 squadron which crashed near Rochester in September 1940 after an engagement over the channel also the codes of Spitfire P9458 of 72 squadron lost in September 1940. apologies as I have asked before but both pilot,s were local to me and I thought I,d have one more try with the BoB build coming up, failing that does anyone Know of any other BoB aircraft with connections to North east born pilot,s? regards Steve.
  19. Busy couple of months since I last finished something post-worthy. There was an Italeri Jaguar that turned into a total mess and now lives with my nephew so may now be destroyed for all I know. Also been on holiday and started playing American Football again so build time has been reduced somewhat. So, onto the kit. Picked it up in the VE-day offers on airfix.com. Its a good kit, went together very nicely although the fit on the prop is so tight that it won't turn! There's an annoying gap in front of the cockpit where the fuselage halves haven't quite gone together. I thought about filling it but this was more built for painting practice so I didn't bother. That's also the reason I did the 607 Squadron Cooper Trophy race scheme. Well, that and I liked it more and have family in County Durham so there's a vague connection somewhere. Its brush painted with Humbrol enamels before a couple of coats of Humbrol clear for the decals. I tried a wash but it didn't turn out well, I guess gray on gray was a bad idea. I was originally going to try weathering as well but decided if it was going racing it would have been kept clean. The whole underside is a mess as our loving cat chose to sit next to it right after it was painted and shed all her hair right onto it so just the one pic of that from a distance. The starboard 4 decal got ripped as well so this is definitely a model with a good side. Final lesson, mask gloss paint before spraying matt varnish. Thanks for looking. EDIT: Fixed the wheels and replaced the first side view photo.
  20. Hello! I have redone this post as i am having a tech nightmare! So the aim is to build the old tooling airfix spitfire VB which is actually from the 2010 vc boxing . The easy option may have been to build a vc with the newer parts as they are more detailed..... but i'm not..... I really love squadron leader johnny lynch's AC from his time on malta. http://agapemodels.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/lynch-spitfire.jpg 1/48 is not my thing I am a 1/72 kinda chap, but this is for my kids ceiling (their request!) Which is about 11 ft high and I want them to see it. It needs to be blue as that's what they and the wife want.... I did offer a big lancaster but after it was described as a "big black angel of death" ( there must be nose art for that??) I thought I won't push it. Having looked at the kit and considered my experience I feel out of my comfort zone..... but what the hey let's give it a go. I am in no way a good modeller so please lower your expectations as this will be more for support than showing anyone How it's done! So here's where I am at. Wings assembled http://rs76.pbsrc.com/albums/j34/robertmulvey1985/Mobile%20Uploads/20150405_075551_zpsyjnrnlca.jpg~320x480?t=1428177410 http://rs76.pbsrc.com/albums/j34/robertmulvey1985/Mobile%20Uploads/20150405_075604_zpseshforo3.jpg~320x480?t=1428177362 I have chopped off the wing tips of the vb and added the clipped wing inserts, these are not made for this version and need more attention to get them right.... fill sand fill sand and hope I don't have to put detail back in! Internals have been given a lock of paint and need detailing and weathering http://rs76.pbsrc.com/albums/j34/robertmulvey1985/Mobile%20Uploads/20150405_075509_zpssaxebr6t.jpg~320x480?t=1428175749 So just a basic start more to come! And hopefully I will fine a way of embedding the pics as it's really not working out for me! Cheers Rob
  21. Being rather intrigued by the night/white underside painting of early-war RAF types, I was wondering what types were so painted. So far I have both the Hurricane & Spitfire, but am curious about whether other types, such as the Gladiator, Blenheim, Wellington, and Battle were similarly marked. Thanks.

  23. Good Evening, I thought I had posted pics of this build already but I haven't. Latest release of the Airfix 1/72 Mk.1 Spit that I had originally started to hand paint about 5 years before it hit the skids and ended up on the shelf o' doom! For whatever reason I ressurected it a few weeks ago, rubbed it back a bit with a worn Scotchbrite pad and re-sprayed it using Tamiya paints (I adore spraying these, a real pleasure to work with!). Markings are out of the box and the weathering is pastels. Photo's were from my iPhone and I think I've inadvertently had one of the effects selected at the time but here you go anyway - Thanks for looking, all feedback, good and bad welcome, Eng
  24. These were two of the finest kits i have ever built. They are beautiful kits. They are both built straight from the box with the exeption of belts in the hurricane. The undersides and earth were airbrushed but the green was brush painted. That was a pain. The Tamiya paints airbrush beautifully , but not so good on the brush painting side i n my experience. I wish i could take better photos , they really dont do the complete models justice. My only small bugbear was the undercarriage on the spitfire. They could have been mounted better. Cue the Battle of Britain music!
