  1. Its been April since I put anything on Britmodeller,I have been building, just very slowly. However with Peter Halls new P.E. for HMS Tiger Revell (yes it is the old Matchbox kit)I have been busy with Tiger, with 3D parts by Bogey at Shapeways and new gun parts it was time to start this kit. Parts Revell 1/700 HMS Tiger P.E. Atlantic Models HMS Tiger for both Gun and Helicopter version. 3D parts by Bogey at Shapeways Gun Barrels by Master Display case by Trumpeter Name plate by laserlayers Junks by Rainbow
  2. Star Wars The Force Awakens Kylo Ren's Command Shuttle Level 2 - Revell Although we don't yet know the full story behind the new J.J.Abrams take on the Star Wars universe after the Emperor's demise, we know that Kylo Ren is the lead baddie (or is he?), and he's the one running the show over at the First Order, which is the re-branded and re-structured remnants of the old Evil Empire. He gets around in this black monster, which bears a family resemblance to an Imperial Shuttle of old in the folded configuration, and with the central fin missing. He's also bound to have a behemoth space station salted away somewhere, but we'll have to wait & see on that score. The Kits This is another of the snap-together styrene kits in the Level 2 range, and as such it is more detailed and larger than the lights & sound Level 1 kits (toys) I reviewed recently. It arrives in a bigger box, and has six sprues in grey black styrene, plus one containing a red painted clear part. The details are painted at the factory, although most of it is simply a different shade of almost-black with a slight greenish tint. Only the exhaust nozzles have been hit with a shade of silver and the canopy with red to give them a bit of a glow. The first thing of note is how big these wings really are. They're over 30cm long, so when it's built, you're going to need some headroom wherever you want to store/display it. There are contrasting inserts in the wing edges, and the cannons in the leading wing-root edge are carried over from the old shuttles. The lower hull has a crew compartment and bulkhead added along with an articulated access-ramp, which is covered by a blank bay to block your view of the interior. The canopy and wing root bulkheads are slotted in place along with a few other smaller parts, and the hull is closed up, with a pair of exhaust nozzles added to the rear. The wings slot into the hull's bulkheads on long pins for strength, and you then install the landing gear skids in retracted positions by leaving the gear legs off, or in landing pose by adding the legs beforehand. Conclusion This is a construction toy, and a pretty good one at that, with plenty of external detail to entertain the eye. It's a big kit, so if you're supervising the build you'll need to look out for joints that would benefit from gluing, but if my son gets as much fun out of these bigger kits as he has done with the Level 1 kits, they'll be a great buy for any kids you know of any age. Highly recommended. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. For further information visit
  3. Hi everyone ! After a long time this project is finished ! With the help of Shawn M ( he sent me the canopy because i ruined mine . Thank you very much Shawn ) i managed to finish the model . 4. Hi all, just fancied a quickish (maybe a couple of weeks anyway) build just to keep in touch with my 1/72 side so swapped my eldest a kit for this as I only have a couple of 1/72 small kit,s in the meager stash,It,s the old Matchbox kit which accuracy issues aside was one of their better mold's.the cockpit is none existent so a bit of scratchbuilding will be needed just to "busy" it up and It's been a while since I did a biplane.Finish will be for an aircraft that attacked the Bismark flown of Ark royal. the box: The spru'es: and a shot of the fuselage: and my only other bi-plane to date,Revell's old Nieport with streched sprue rigging which I will be doing on the Swordfish.
  5. Hi everyone and as promised here are some pics from this finished build. I've included a link to the WIP thread if you hadn't seen it before and to recap, this all started with me asking fellow modeller and all-round good bloke Chief Wiggum if he considered building his Trumpeter TU-95 Bear as an in-flight intercept diorama. After almost 10 months and a lot of modelling heartache later (99% for Chief), here it is. We were absolutely thrilled and stunned to win Silver in the Diorama class at the IPMS Ireland Nationals with it as well as the 'People's Choice' Award as voted for by the public at the show... Honestly, we were deligthed! (I'm the one not smiling) While neither of us can make Telford this year, we're hoping to get the diorama there somehow for the IPMS Ireland Club table.....gonna need a big roof box Thanks for looking and any questions, will try to answer them! Cheers, Dermot and Barry (aka Chief Wiggum)
  6. Hi folk,s with my Battle of Britain build's almost complete and as a calming bit of R'nR from the steamy jungles of the Vietnam GB I need a bit of colour in my life so totally inspired by Beefy's superb build of Revell's tug boat I saw this for a tenner in my LMS a few week's back and thought I would give it a go.I am going for a "what if! scheme and here;s the tale:Many years ago my Dad took me to the science museum then in exhibition park,in this museum were a mass of beautiful huge shipwright's models from tyne side's rich shipbuilding past, among them a beautiful 1950,s cargo ship in a duck egg green and white scheme and for some strange reason it scared the life out of me. Fast forward forty odd year,s to last year and I took my son,s to the discovery museum in Newcastle and in the shipbuilding room were many of those same models and perched up in the display case was the very same ship and believe me the Hair,s on my neck stood up,how can a colour scheme scare you? so to lay the demon's to rest that,s the colour she will be painted. 8. Star Wars - The Force Awakens Millennium Falcon Revell Well, if you've had your head jammed behind a wardrobe for the last six months it might be news to you that we're being treated to a new Star Wars film under the Disney auspices, with J.J.Abrams at the helm. A raft of new characters, the return of some of the old favourites, and a host of new hardware will be gracing our screens as of December 2015, and quite frankly I can't wait! The new Millennium Falcon is as recognisable of the other kits in this series, having only some minor modifications applied over the years since the original trilogy, the most noticeable being the new "radar" dish that replaces the large circular one of old. The Kit The first thing to get straight is that this is a kit, but it is firmly aimed at the younger audience, and has been simplified with them in mind, as well as being provided with a small sound-module that also has some lighting effects built in. inside the box the parts are held firmly by two vacuum formed clear end caps, with the smaller parts in a small polythene bag. There are 19 parts for you to put together, and if I'm honest I'm quite impressed with the quality of the detail, although it's probably not up to a serious modeller's standards without some upgrades, due to the simplification necessary on the very busy surfaces. That said though, it builds up in just a couple of minutes in the hands of an adult of limited intelligence such as this reviewer, and when it's done it looks really nice. Seriously! It is moulded in ABS rather than normal styrene, as it gives a lot more strength to the finished model. It has some fun features like retractable landing gear, although these have been massively altered to make them strong enough for play, with little curved finger cut-outs to let you move them. The electronics are hidden within the rear fuselage and provide light and sounds when you press the central exhaust nearest the rear of the ship. The sounds cycle as before, and two blue LEDs light up the engine exhaust grille at the rear, which looks pretty good under the circumstances. If you've watched the videos I posted up the other day, you'll be pleased to know that they're a lot better than the audio would suggest, and they are as follows: Fly-by A slow and unrealistic shooting noise Rapid fire that sounds like the self-defence cannons that pop out from the underside The 1st and 3rd samples are a lifts from the film at a guess, while the 2nd is a poor fabrication of unknown provenance. The radar is mobile and can spin on its base, as can the central gun turrets we grew to love in the first film. As already mentioned, the landing gear clicks in & out for flight and landing poses, but the canopy on this kit is just painted on with no clear panels or interior, which is a shame, but hardly surprising at this scale, which must be near to 1:144. Conclusion If you buy it expecting a highly detailed model of a new Millennium Falcon, you might be a tad disappointed, although I think that it has potential if you're willing to put the effort in to turn it into a "proper" model. Like the real thing, it is robust enough for extended play, and only a few bits may get dislodged or lost. If you're a kid with a liking for Star Wars however, the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy will seem absolutely awesome to you, and I can't wait for my five year-old to see them when he comes home from school. Highly recommended if you understand what you're getting in the box. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. For further information visit
  9. Star Wars - The Force Awakens First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter Revell Well, if you've had your head jammed behind a wardrobe for the last six months it might be news to you that we're being treated to a new Star Wars film under the Disney auspices, with J.J.Abrams at the helm. A raft of new characters, the return of some of the old favourites, and a host of new hardware will be gracing our screens as of December 2015, and quite frankly I can't wait! The new TIE fighter is operated by the First Order, which is the new name for the Evil Empire, who despite our fervent desires weren't polished off with the demise of the 2nd Death Star, but managed to re-establish their grip on the Empire, but to what degree we don't yet know. It is upgraded from the original, and squeezes a two-man crew into the same cabin space – even Sci-Fi technology is advancing in terms of miniaturisation! They're black now, and this one has a red accented panel, which I'm going to guess represents their unit badge? The Kit The first thing to get straight is that this is a kit, but it is firmly aimed at the younger audience, and has been simplified with them in mind, as well as being provided with a small sound-module that also has some lighting effects built in. inside the box the parts are held firmly by two vacuum formed clear end caps, with the smaller parts in a small polythene bag. It is moulded in ABS rather than normal styrene, as it gives a lot more strength to the finished model. It has some fun features like an opening cockpit hatch in painted clear, and of course a little button on the bottom that activates a red light in the cockpit and plays one of three sounds, once you've removed the little tab that breaks the contact with the two LR44 batteries that are pre-installed. If you've watched the videos I posted up the other day, you'll be pleased to know that they're a lot better than the audio would suggest, and they are as follows: The TIE fighter screaming fly-past Firing cannons A muddled sounding explosion They're lifts from the previous films (I think) and you can hear other weapons firing in the 2nd sample, while the 3rd sample is a bit poor compared to the other two. The red light illuminates the coaming of the cockpit quite nicely, which can be seen through the faceted windscreen. I did make a short video demonstrating the sounds, but my heavy breathing ruined it a little, so I deleted it Conclusion If you buy it expecting a highly detailed model of a new TIE fighter, you might be a tad disappointed, although I think that it has potential if you're willing to put the effort in to turn it into a "proper" model. If you're a kid with a liking for Star Wars however, it will seem absolutely awesome to you, and I can't wait for my five year-old to see them when he comes home from school. 10. For my Scarab... 50s/60s, and often later until the military was sold off to the civi contractors, RAF or RN vehicles were generally blue (obviously save for specials and frontline eg RAFG). Best Revell, Humbrol or Tamiya (possibly Vallejo if stocked)? Would love 100% accuracy but won't be mixing %s so will take a 'very close'. ... VMT. D.
  11. After a brief spell away to play a bit of golf & concentrate on other bits & pieces I've decided to delve into my stash & start model making again. There's no way I can match the skills of most of you guys on here, so I was looking to find a way of seeing if I am actually improving. One of the plus points of having 5 kids, all of whom nod approvingly at my attempts, but really take not interest at all, is that I quite often get given kits that I've made before & so this will be my second attempt at the revell 1/72 SPAD XIII. One day I'll progress to WNW and all that stuff, but for now I'm keeping it simple. Here's my first attempt at this kit from 3 years ago. And as this is going to take a while (remember I do have 5 kids), here are some pics of my 'office' which is most definitely in need of a tidy up before I start. OK - it's a mess & task 1 is to clear that desk....
  12. Well here are a few shots I managed to get of my latest effort. The sun was out, so I was expecting to get a few more shots, but unfortunately I didn't take all environmental conditions into account & the 'photoshoot' was halted quite abruptly..... All was going well. The pictures were taken using a bit of floor underlay as the base & a bit of wood as the background. I turned away to change my lens...... There was a gust of wind & the piece of wood toppled over And that was the end of that one. WIP is available here ...... wanders off muttering unrepeatable words
  13. Hi, Had a few weeks off from modelling, needed a bit of down time after the last project had idea of doing a Model T ford or other rusted vehicle, but remembered that I had already started a VW Samba Bus. So what to do with it. Well it will be rusted and a bit run down. Whilst at IPMS Avon Model Show I picked up a couple of figures from Nuts Planet, Overwatcher and Vagabond. This project will feature Vagabond who has come across a broken down Samba Bus, but where is everyone... I already had a base which was going to be used for something else that never materialised, so halfway there with this project. Going to have bus stuffed with stowage and stuff scattered on the floor around the bus, as if whoever owned the bus has fled or worse turned... Figure is well cast, no seam lines to clear up, cast in grey resin, comes with a rucksack, jerry can, sawn off shotgun plus some pouches to go on his belt. This will be my second Samba Bus, the other was a Post Apocalyptic Battle Bus. More tomorrow. Cheers Richard
  14. The Spitfire PRXIX is my favourite mark of the breed, and with no kit currently available of this iconic photo-recce version I have decided to convert the original issue Revell 1/32nd scale MkI into the PRXIX using Grey Matter's conversion set. So, the plan is to use this as the basis for the build... S1030026 by Thomas Probert, on Flickr and combine it with these resin parts... S1030029 by Thomas Probert, on Flickr S1030033 by Thomas Probert, on Flickr to hopefully make a large-scale version of this Griffon-powered beauty. I've begun by removing the parts needed from the standard MkI wing and plugging the gaps with plastic card. The oil cooler, radiator and carburetor intake have all been blanked off in preparation for the aftermarket parts. The cartridge-ejector ports are the next items that'll need filling: S1030037 by Thomas Probert, on Flickr More updates will come as the build progresses. Tom
  15. Hello fello plastic fondlers, (I'm going to add to this thread a bit at a time due to pc and photobucket incompatabilty related issues so please have patience with me) I recently completed the new tool Spitfire bt Revell in 1/32nd scale and was lucky enough to find a window in the weather that allowed me to take a few snaps. As is my want, I plopped the model onto a base and stood it in front of a scenic backdrop. I spirinkled some props around liberally in an attempt at realism before firing the shutter in full sunshine. Here we see AR213 at rest, possibly before an airshow? It is my theory that Revell used this exact airframe as their template for this offering of the Spitfire. It therefore made sense to try to model it. With the pilot aboard she sits awaiting engine start. (I think the extinguisher is a bit too close to the aircraft in this pic) With engine running the pilot awaits the removal of the wheel chocks before he can taxi onto the grass for takeoff. Finally, he taxiis past before soaring skyward in his precious mount.... This model fought me tooth and claw and in truth, I probably enjoyed it less than I should have. The paint finish is abysmal resulting in me leaving off most of the stencilling to avoid any silvering. I chose to adapt, alter and tweak many details on the kit to get a more accurate looking bird. When I get more time I'll take a few more snaps and detail some of the mods in case anyone is interested. In the mean time I hope you enjoy these images. Cheers.
  16. i have decided to try a bigger plane kit, my 1/72 stearman kaydet is still awaiting decals & the 1/72 saetta is still awaiting it's camo they were both put on hold while i finished a Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.G. anyway i digress. i have just made a start on assembling the engine while i have a spare 5 minutes. more to follow all comments welcome john
  17. Finished this a couple of weeks ago, got around to taking some photos today. Its the Revell 1/32 Hunter with Fisher Models conversion. Was my first time working with resin, which turned out to be quite straightforward, no doubt helped by the quality of this conversion set. In fact I was so impressed I went and bought Fishers 1/32 Sea Fury Build thread here - http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234970582-hawker-hunter-t8m-132/#entry1789327
  18. Hi Everyone, Here is my entry into the What If III Group Build : the Boeing B-52R Vidar (meaning Warrior). The kit I used is the Revell 1/144 Boeing B-52H Stratofortress dating from 2002 according to the instructions Built OOTB with the exception of RAF roundels, 617 squadron insignia on tail and XL446 codes on underside of the wings. Originally meant to be fitted with 4 CFM-56 engines, however this had to be abandoned due to low ground clearance of the model meaning engines didn't fit. Backstory "With departure of the USAF from RAF Mildenhall and the takeover by the RAF, the RAF began the search for a new aircraft to base there. As the RAF wanted to return to the nuclear deterrent role, it decided upon a variant of the B-52 Stratofortress. Helped by the fact that one of the hangars contained a damaged B-52H, after getting permission from the USAF to modify it, the RAF modified what would be the prototype B-52R model into an aircraft more suited to their needs. This prototype would be equipped with 8 TF33-P-3/103 turbofan engines. With an approximate loadout of 70,000 lb or 31,500 kg worth of mixed ordnance, the B-52R would be suitable for the RAF's need for a long range bomber with nuclear capability but also allowing for long range conventional bombing missions. With the aid of some USAF technicians, the RAF managed to get their new prototype ready for flight testing including all new cockpit systems (glass cockpit screens, digital throttles, computerized flight management system including damage control and ordnance control. The B-52R prototype is capable of launching/dropping every weapon in the US/UK arsenals. Deciding to give the new plane some history, the RAF resurrected the recently decommissioned 617 squadron, The Dambusters and transferred the plane to it. They also resurrected the tail codes of the Vulcan bombers and gave the new plane the tail code XL446. The planes name the B-52R Vidar (warrior). As the 75th anniversary of Operation Chastise approached in 2018, the RAF planned a commerative flight to remember all those who lost their lives during the mission including flights over all of the dams involved as well as the military bases." Anyway here are the photos. Thanks for looking, Rick
  19. Hi everyone, Following on from the Irish Air Corps Gazelle I built earlier this year, I was asked by the same person to finish him a kit that had been started of an Irish Dauphin, also from our Air Corps. Here's the real thing Irish Air Corps Dauphin on Airliners.Net And this is the kit as I got it with a resin aftermarket nose already added and some other bits started. This kit is the Matchbox issue of this one, later re-released by Revell. Now I won't go into all the details but this kit isn't that accurate for a modern Dauphin but I'm not going to change all those things because I just don't have the skills! But will try to bring the old girl to a decent, acceptable level. Added a scratchbuilt bench seat in the back with belts from tape, front and back. Also repainted the cockpit to be more accurate. New collectives for up the front office. I also cut out the rear sliding door to have it open. Underneath, I added the distinctive fuel dump line and radar blade antennae. The bigger resin bit at the back was already added with the nose bit when I got the kit. And here she is with a coat of primer and a couple of coats of Revell Acrylic Light Grey 36371. I've masked the tail rotor bit as part of that stays white (tricky) and also the upper engine panel which is white on the sides and bright red on top. When I took off the front canopy to give it a coat of Klear, there was a nasty stress crack on one side. So a replacement from a donor kit in the spares box will be needed. Having built this kit before, the airframe glass can be more than a bit fiddly to fit...ho hum. Thanks for looking and more soon! Dermot
  20. Hi all and this is the latest finish from me, Revell's Dauphin II modified and wearing Irish Air Corps markings. Not my best build and the fit of the canopy pieces was a challenge. There's also some shape issues with this kit in the tail, around the engine and the canopy 'brow' which I think is too flat or tall? Anyway, you can read the brief WIP here but in summary: Kit: Matchbox issue of 1/72 SA365 Dauphin II Extras: Scratchbuilt bench seat for cabin; collectives for cockpit; rescue winch, fuel dump line, open rear door, searchlight. Resin aftermarket nose for Irish SAR version (model was pre-started so don't know by whom) Paints: Halfords white from a can, all others Revell Acrylics brushpainted. Klear, Flory Models wash Decals: Max Decals for Irish Air Corps (donated by Britmodeller Lazlo Woodbine - thanks Gary!) This a/c 244 was the first of 5 Dauphin 2s delivered to the Irish Air Corps between June and December 1986. Operated by SAR Squadron, No 3 Support Wing, a/c 244 was also equipped for naval ops by the Irish Naval Service aboard the LE Eithne (P-31). The five aircraft served with great distinction and bravery in the SAR/Air Ambulance role. Sadly a/c 248 was lost in a fatal crash along with its crew returning from an SAR mission in July 1999 in Co Waterford. This a/c 244 was retired from service in 2003 with 5,400 flying hours. Along with the three remaining a/c, they were sold in 2006 and now operate with the Chilean Navy. . by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr . by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr . by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr . by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr . by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr And along with the Irish Gazelle I built earlier this year - both of these are now off to a collector and you know, I'm a little bit sad to see them go! . by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr Thanks for looking. Dermot
  21. Afternoon folks Ok so my current obsession with the Hunter continues and this time it is the Hunter F6 of Fighter School 1960. A gentleman on Facebook very kindly sent me some of the photo's he had taken of these machines in 1963 when he was on DFCS at Binbrook when the unit left West Raynham. It is my second 1:32 Hunter - the first being the FGA9 of the current Revell boxing and I did this in the RAF Brawdy scheme of red spine and fin so the two together look great - some photos of the two below. This one is OOB except the pilot who is a PJ Productions figure. Upper sides are Mr Color paints and the underside is Halfords Aluminum post shaded with various Alclad shades. Pleased to say I have another F6 and FGA9 to build! May be Black Arrows for the former. I hope you like it Chris
  22. Hi All, Just a quick one. I recently purchased the Revell 1:24 Huey, and it's a MONSTER of a kit. Unfortunately the kit decals are so painfully dull! I've had a hunt around and come up dry for aftermarket options, do any of you know if there are any out there and if so - Where? Really want to make this look a little better than the stock stuff, so anything you can point out would be great. Cheers, James
  23. Hello Guys, This will be my first entry into the "Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary Group Build" - the Revell 1/32 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa. I plan to accompany this Spitfire with the Eduard 1/32 Messerschmitt BF109E-3. Introduction to the kit: The Box Art: The Box Contents The Box Contains 3 clear bags of light grey sprues; 5 in one bag, and 4 in each of the two other bags making a total of 13 light grey sprues. There is another small clear bag containing 3 small clear sprues. There is a 12 page black and white assembly/painting and decaling instruction booklet that includes two options of paint scheme and squadron markings, and lastly, a sheet of cartograf decals; Sprues A + B: Sprues C + D + D- NO, that's not a mistake, but it is one by Revell of Germany!! I have two sprue D's which are the portside upper wing sections and no Sprue E which is the starboard side upper wing section! Aaaarrrrrggggghhhh!!! I went to Revell's website to order the missing sprue E and it can take up to 8 weeks to be delivered from Germany!!!!!????!!!! Bloody hell!! Sprue F Sprue G Sprue Q Sprue T Sprue S (x2) Sprue H (x2) Clear Sprues I, R + U A 12 page black and white Assembly/Painting and Decaling Instruction Booklet Front Page 1 and Back Page 12 Pages 2 + 3 Pages 4 + 5 Page 6 + 7 Pages 8 + 9 Pages 10 + 11 The Decal Sheet The molded parts are very crisp and clean with zero flash apart from a couple of little areas. The parts have nice fine recessed panel lines and lots of rivet details. The clear molded parts are very clear with zero aberrations except for one side of the sliding canopy which is slightly "glazed". The decals are excellent looking with zero carrier film beyond the decal edges and good register. The black and white instruction booklet appears to be clear and concise, but the two paint and decal options would be better in color. The color call outs are in Revell colors only. I will make a final report when the build is complete indicating any issues that I come across. In the meantime, thanks for taking a look and I hope you enjoy following along with my build. In the meantime, if you'd like to see my YouTube "in-Box-Review" video for this kit, here is the link: https://youtu.be/SWiiFXlU6zA Let the build begin!! Cheers Martin
  24. Hello again everybody. Revell kit + Nazca decals. White automotive paint, Alclad for the engines. My father flew this one, LanChile only had three of them and one was lost in 1991 in a runway overrun accident in Puerto Williams, Chile (Patagonia). 20 passengers died. It was an aircraft definitely ahead of its time, bringing by then unkown low-noise levels to air travel down here in south america. It performed extremely well in short runways in spite of having no thrust reversers as well. Thanks for looking
  25. Ello gents and ladies.... I caved..... So there will be another 32 scale Spook in the house.... It will also be a Luftwaffe one and a F-4F, but the scheme has yet to be decided..... I hope that it will be a colourful one and an easy one... As time is a big thing here.... Pictures and so on will follow in the next couple of days. PS: Due to family illness I am giving a heads up already at the start that I might not finish, but the build will give me the time off and the inspiration to keep it going.... So, from the south west part of Norway.... So long for now... Ørjan
