  1. A month ago I visited a nearby model shop in Helsinki to browse if there was something new and interesting to buy. Suddenly, I saw a fancy looking box with a picture of a pink Ford Thunderbird ’56 in front of a motel on Route 66. I simply had to by the kit. The 2-door convertible Ford Thunderbird was produced from 1955 to 1957. A total of 53.166 units were manufactured during the three year period. The car was an all-new concept in motoring called the ”personal luxury”car offering sporty performance in luxury and comfort. The kit is an old Monogram one that has its origins in 1977 when the company introduced a diecast/plastic T-bird ’56 in 1/24 scale. Since then there have been numerous re-boxings and some new parts (and the for instance the diecast body was skipped) years ago). The latest offering is then the current Revell USA re-boxing with new decals launched this year. Since the kit is very old I didn’t expect it to be anything near tamigawa quality but I must say that I partly was positively surprised. The fit and the detailing of some parts was excellent even if the age of the kit could clearly be seen. The door and trunk seams were wide and the molding lines strong. The decals on the other hand were excellent and I applied them after having sanded off the molded-on badges and grilles. I first covered the body with white Tamiya Fine surface primer and painted it then with Tamiya Pink spray TS-25. For the chassis and the smaller details I used Revell’s and Vallejo’s paints. The chrome edges of the roof were done with Bare-Metal chrome foil. The patching up of some of the crome parts was done with a liquid chrome pen. This was also the first time I used Revell’s Contacta clear for the transparent parts and it worked fine.
  2. #9/2021 And my dad´s next model is finished. Wanted to avoid one of the usual blue schemes so we chose a French one in an atlantic scheme. Revell USA kit with Berna decals. Painted with Tamiya XF-2 White and Gunze H317 FS36231. Build thread here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235088144-aeronautique-navale148-lockheed-pv-1-ventura-french-navy/ (Free)France operated the PV-1 and also the PV-2 from 1944 to 1961. The model shows an aircraft with Flotille 6F, which used only PV-1s from 1944 to 1947, stationed at BAN Agadir/Morocco in 1946. 4. Good day all I feel rather embarrassed for asking this (so many people on so many forums who view obsessive Accuracy in model kits with disdain), but in the early 1980s I built the Imai kit of the Cutty Sark - this was the 1/120 scale version. I considered it to be a pretty accurate model and it captured the sleek lines of the original ship extremely well. I never considered the Slide Rule and Scale Drawing approach when building it, the kit was just a complete pleasure from start to finish and that is all I recall. Imai did actually include scale drawings from the Cutty Sark Museum, so I assumed that it "probably is accurate enough". Unfortunately the model did not survive the collective childhoods of my kids that were born soon after (my son at age 5 wanted to impress his little sister with the sheer distance he can throw a tennis ball - inside our home, I was not that impressed myself though to put it mildly). Anyway, I consoled myself that I will "one day" buy the larger Revell 1/96 scale kit of the same ship. ...So I did actually buy the Revell kit and it has been sitting in my stash for the past 15 years(!!!). Something that strikes me every time when I want to get going on the kit is that the hull seems somewhat "beamy" (too wide when considering the ratio of hull length vs. beam/width), compared to how I remember the Imai model. Many of the early Revell or Monogram kits - I think the Cutty Sark dates from the early 1960s - are somewhat known for dubious accuracy, dating from a time when plastic construction kits were more often than not thought of as toys. Do anyone have any comments in regard to hull shape accuracy of the Revell kit? I have tried to google around and there are lots of build progress discussions but seems like Accuracy in regards to these old Revell kits is a taboo subject. -- Jannie, almost ready for retirement and clearing my workbench...
  5. #28/2018 My dad is no biplane pro, so here is his humble attempt on the Revell USA Stearman. There are some glitches but it turned out better than we both expected. EZ Line for the tailplane rigging, plastic rods for the metal rods between the main wings. Gunze and Tamiya paints used. 7. To quote an old Rap song from the early 90ies....Whoomp, there it is! After the Lancaster this is the second 4-Mot my dad built. Revell USA kit with Superscale decals and Gunze/Tamiya acrylics. Regarding that the molds are 39 years old the fit was surprisingly good, only the clear parts aren´t the best anymore. The model shows an aircraft of the 416th BS in Italy 1944. Respect for those young men who climbed into these flying coffins mission for mission.....the Luftwaffe was not that threat anymore but the Vienna area (to which they often headed) had the second dense flak defence after Berlin. After being awarded with a Distinguished Unit Citation while serving with the 12th AF for a mission during the Big Week, the 99th BG earned a second one with the 15th AF for a successful bombing mission against the Wiener Neustädter Flugzeugwerke (20km away from our hometown) on April 23 1944 without any losses. After a fellow modeller pointed out that the oil streaks in the hot air outlet area on the upper wings don´t go with the openings but the small space between the openings because the oil gets divided by the air, I did a quick fix with the help of Tamiya´s weathering sets. Does not look optimal but ok. Gotta fix this maybe someday with airbrush.
  8. #24/2017 My dad is not a real chopper fan, but he decided to do two iconic helicopters. First up a Hind in Cuban colours. IMO still the meanest combat helicopter with the most "fear factor". Used a Revell USA kit edition with Aztec decals, some PE parts from the Polish company PART for the cockpit. Regarding that the kit molds are about 30 years old the model didn´t turn out so bad. Nevertheless it would be about time for a up-to-date new Hind kit family.
