  5. This is a resin kit, but I'm having a gut feeling that I'd prefer it to ancient Airfix offering More: http://pas-decals.ru/forum/18--/5839-sud-se-210-caravelle-1-144-ot-pas
  6. Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone knows of 1/72 scale decals and a conversion set for Canadian Avro Lancaster KB976 in MK10 AR condition as delivered to Lynn Garrison in 1964 or in her final transatlantic flight condition to Strathallan in 1975. I'd be looking at using Airfix's excellent new tool BI / BIII as the basis for the model.
  7. ok this is something a bit different and could be cherry buster for some! I know there are quite a few twisted soles out there who like to dabble in resin, or just like to sniff it! So how about a 100% (ok not counting PE and white metal bit) resin build? These lots of choice available out there plus plenty can be had quite cheaply on EvilBay. There are probably heaps of members out there sitting on resin just waiting for the right time, plus probably lots of curious members wanting to know what the fuss is all about. So why not have an open build for whatever you have stashed away or whatever you can get your sticky mitts on to show the world we're not really crazy cellar dwellers that crave filling and sanding, no more bubbles and more filling and more sanding and sanding and more filling and lots resin dust........opps thats me! Have my eye on a super cool 1/48th Ju-388J Nightfighter......of cause! and yes i'm a resin fiend! -------------------------------------------- Ok Ive started a list so we can get an idea whos interested and the numbers so far. 9. I picked this up from Ali at Telford, and have been working on it since. The aircraft went together really well, and if I'd been painting it one of the "painted" schemes, I'd have been done last week in all probability. As is my wont at the moment though, I chose the tricky scheme over which there's a lot of conjecture and gainsay, with the most reliable 1st hand description being that it was a "yukky green" on the first flight (thanks Edgar!). I was pointed at the AloChrom anodising substitute dip/paint that is still in use these days, and suddenly it all clicked. It's kind of a sour greeny/yellow, and it appealed to me, so I went for it. I also ignored the usual red panel in the chin, mainly because I felt like it The kit goes together very well, and I'd originally intended to pose the canopy open, so I didn't fettle the opener much, but after all that paint and varnish it didn't fit too well over the fixed section. I did a little sanding to improve the fit, but it's not too good I'm afraid. If I'd decided to go with a closed canopy from the outset, I'd have done it differently. No use crying over spilt milk though Painted in Alclad metallics with an overspray of a bespoke mix that I cooked up from their clear range, including green, yellow, and a littl blue, and lots of Aqua Gloss in between. The final finish was muted by their Light Sheen varnish, and some mild weathering done with oils. On with the pics - sorry about the dust, but I missed it after I'd polished the decals, and I'm too tired to re-take the photos again, as my back is killing me Good points: Quick build due to low part count and good fit Helpful instructions, with only the PE parts causing me to scratch my head Lovely detail in the nose area Choice of fit and finish depending on when in its career you want to model it All gear legs and the long pitot probe have metal cores Things to watch out for Wash the resin thoroughly, or your paint won't stick. Key the surface with a very fine sanding stick Fill the grooves in the backs of the gear legs if you aren't using the gear doors Make sure you fettle the canopy if you're posing it closed, and beware of the fit once the layers of paint are on if you intend to leave it open The decals are very thin, and the codes are printed individually, so you have to apply them separately. They can curl up on themselves if you're not quick once they're clear of the backing paper, so it may be an idea to slide them from the film to the model This is a prototype, which changes configuration almost daily, so check the scheme/period you want to model, and find out what was installed where at that point Bad points: Decals have a slight printing pattern in the blues which I suspect are too light Clear resin canopies aren't always the clearest when compared to vacformed alternatives Conclusion: A thoroughly enjoyable build, although mine had a hiatus while I mulled over the colours of the first flight "primer" scheme - whether I'm right or wrong is moot, but I'm quite pleased with the way it came out, although it's no show winner as usual, due to my little slip-ups. The build thread is here, the review here and thanks to Ali for the review sample. Review sample courtesy of
  10. Russian BM-21 Grad MLRS detail updates 1:35 ET Models [E35-191] The Trumpeter 1:35 BM-21 Grad mobile rocket launcher is a great kit out of the box, but as is the want of many modellers there’s always room for extra detail. ET Models have released this set of etched brass just for such a requirement. The three sheets of brass, one large, one medium and one small are all taped to black card and contained in the standard poly packaging with card header. The instructions, on the now standard green paper, cover five sides of A4. They are very clear and concise, well laid out and easy to read giving good directions on where the individual parts go, some other manufacturers could take a leaf out of ET’s book and see how instructions should be laid out. The construction starts in the cabin with the addition of four air vents on the facia and the drivers three pedals. On the in front of the driver, on the headlining, a sun visor is added. Externally the footsteps and fuel tanks are fitted out with new brackets, supports and straps, whilst the large storage locker has new support brackets and a new handle attached. ET Models have also provided a completely new storage/ammunition box for the port side truck bed. One of the more complex assemblies of this set is for the spare wheel housing, with plenty of benign into the correct curve of the wheel, hinges, brackets and footplates which all go together to make a very accurate and realistic structure. Another large assembly is the tool locker on the right hand side of the truck bed which also incorporates the front of the rear wheel arch. This box includes internal shelving, clamps and straps on the fold down door for various tools and equipment which will have to be provided by the modeller. The rest of the parts comprise the usual small items, such as brackets and clamps for the pioneer tools, also including a new blade for the shovel. There are small mudflaps for the front wheel arches and large ones for the rears which also included their supporting structures. Also included are replacement windscreen wipers, number plates, numerous brackets and locking pins complete with chains, aerial support bracket and some unusual mountings fitted to either side of the cab, which look like light fittings but more research will be needed to decipher exactly what they are. Finally the rear bumpers, large footplate and rocket tube rear structure and forward strapping are added. [E35-053] For even more detail and also helping get rid of those vinyl tyres that many modellers don’t seem to like, ET Models have released this set of resin wheels and tyres to completely replace the kit items. All seven wheels are included in the set so even the spare gets replaced. The detail is excellent and really shows off the heavy tread these tyres have. The hub detail is well executed on both inner and outer faces. Only a small amount of clean up will be required on removing the small moulding blocks, which are also well placed on the bottom of the tyre where there is a slight bulging in contact with the ground. Other than painting these wheels are designed to fit directly into position with nothing else for the modeller to fiddle around with, making them very useful for the more novice modeller. Conclusion Two more great and very useful sets for the modeller to really go to town on this interesting and quite impressive vehicle. The etched parts shouldn’t cause any intermediate modeller, or above any headaches. Although patience and care will still be needed on some for the folding and bending, particularly the spare wheel rack and its curves. The wheel set is just so easy to add, giving excellent detail to the model and will ensure it doesn’t start collapsing as may happen with the vinyl tyres. Highly recommended Review Sample courtesy of

  15. Hi mates! After 48 years of modelling, I decided to take the plunge and build my first all-resin kit. I've certainly used lots of resin cockpits and other detailing accessories, but I've never gone for an entire resin model. I figured I should start with something simple and easy, so I picked CMR's beautiful 1:72 Buccaneer. The work-in-progress thread can be found here. I learned a lot along the way, but I think the biggest takeaway is that building a resin kit really isn't much different than a "normal" plastic kit. You have more work to do removing the parts and cleaning them up, and you've got to use different adhesives, but other than that it wasn't so bad. If you've been wanting to give resin a try, go for it! The Buccaneer is finished in Gunze Aqueous H333 Extra Dark Sea Grey, with H331 Dark Sea Grey used for weathering accents. Black pastels were also used to highlight some panels. The metallic surfaces are Alclad, and I chose to pose the model with the wings folded. Oddly enough, the wing fold braces are included with the kit, but not mentioned in the instruction manual. By the way, I can't say enough for CMR's instructions - all 22 pages. I wish every kit had such detailed instructions. One thing I really found useful was a painting guide that listed the correct paint (by BS381C numbers if appropriate) for every single part in the kit. Nice! I didn't use any aftermarket on the kit, because let's face it, all of the aftermarket is already in the box. It's got a resin cockpit and bang seat (hey, the whole model is resin, right?), it's got pre-painted photoetched details for the cockpit, and other photoetch details for use elsewhere, it has two sets of vacuform canopies (good thing, I made a major mistake cutting out the first one), it's got die-cut masks for the canopy and windscreen, and it has two huge sheets of transfers with no less than 12(!) options for markings. So here she is, I hope you enjoy the photos! Cheers, Bill
  16. Resin Avro Lancaster Propellers 1:72 Pavla for the New Airfix Kit It's no surprise that with the new Airfix Lancaster in the shops, there would be aftermarket interest in improving what is already a great kit. More importantly, there's probable little complaining too, being such a popular subject. Pavla have recently released some replacement propellers to take care of both needle and paddle type units fitted to the Mk.I/III aircraft. Both sets come with complete hub units and separate prop blades that locate into the hub recesses. Moulded in light grey resin, they are fine replacements should you choose this route. A razor saw will be necessary to remove the hubs from the backing block U72-147 The paddle blade props have a noticeably wider chord than the parts supplied in the kit. Comparing photographs of the real thing, they appear to be more accurate in this respect. The thickness of the blades is slightly thinner than the kit parts too giving a more scale accurate look. There are a few air bubbles present in some of the blades as you may be able to see from the pictures, however they are very small and easily dealt with. U72-146 The needle blade props look very similar in chord profile to the kit parts, but again benefit from being thinner in thickness. A benefit of using these is the lack of sprue connections to carefully cut / file off and slight flash found on the kit parts. Conclusion For a subtle improvement, these sets will be handy. A blade setting tool would of been a useful addition to assist in getting the blades positioned correctly. The paddle set offers greater value in terms of giving a more accurate chord on the blades. 17. Resin F-101B Voodoo Cockpit Pavla 1:72 for Revell Kit Revell rereleased their kit of the Voodoo last year. This strange yet likeable aircraft was a two seat derivative of the Voodoo designed around the fighter intercept role. Key features of this aircraft were the two seat cockpit and extended afterburner sections which 'hung' out of the rear of the aircraft. This set offers a significant improvement to the kit cockpit. Moulded in light grey resin, the tub has noticeable improvements to the side consoles including throttles and more detailed switch panels. Both front and rear forward panels have very detailed instrument faces and the ejection seats are works of art including harnesses, seat cushions and complex framework / ejector rails. I'd recommend some dry fitting of the tub into the fuselage halves as traditionally, some filing of the resin tub may be necessary to get everything to close up correctly, but everything else should be quite straight forwards due to the minimal parts count. Conclusion If you're a fan of the Voodoo, adding this to your build will offer a big improvement over the kit parts. The detail is quite stunning. Review samples courtesy of

  19. Hi folks, I'm not sure why I put off finishing this for a month, it didn't actually take all that long to do the final assembly, wiring and scenics. But it's done now! (click for bigger/more pictures on Flickr) The kit is from Industria Mechanika, and is a resin cast of a 3D-printed master of a model by a guy called Mike Jensen. My original plan was to do something a bit shinier and cleaner, but I found that the surface was basically too complex to polish, and opted for a weathered finish instead The inspiration was District 9, and more specifically Neill Blomkamp's earlier short Tetra Vaal, so I modelled the surroundings after Soweto. I remodelled the sniper rifle from the kit-supplied anti-materiel weapon to something a little bit more futuristic and police-like, and hollowed out the head and neck to light the eyes. The paint is decanted Tamiya and Alclad lacquer, and various acrylics over the top of that. Markings are a mixture of sprayed and various Gundam kit decals. On the scenic front, the concrete is florists' foam (never again!) the catfood tins were made from thick foil with laser-printed labels, and the bees are H0 scale from Busch - only 10x larger than they should be for 1:87! More details of the build here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234939124-drone-sniper-resin-figure/ Thanks massively to the people who commented on the build thread, I got some key suggestions from there which really helped shape this project! and a few close-ups: Incidentally, I spent a lot of time looking at photographs of the poorer areas of Soweto, particularly Kliptown, to get the colours and plants looking right, and felt kind of crap afterwards, like I was taking advantage of other people. I opted to donate some money to Kliptown Youth Program, it's not much, but hopefully better than doing nothing. If you want to help out, see here: http://www.kliptownyouthprogram.org.za/ Cheers and thanks for looking! Will
  20. MD3 Aircraft Generator 1:48 & 1:72 Videoaviation.com The MD3 generator is a simple cart-mounted generator that was used predominantly by US forces at the height of the cold war in the 1960s and 70s. It contained an eight cylinder motor with fuel tank mounted on top, and could put out around 180hp, converting it to electricity to power an aircraft's 28v systems while it was on the ground with its engine(s) off. The Kit Arriving in a small card box with a 3D drawing of the finished product on the front, this is a very simple kit that won't take very long to build. There are fourteen resin parts, one length of black flexible cable and a small sheet of decals in the box, with the resin protected in one clear bag, while the decals and cable are in another. The instruction sheet is folded up to provide more protection, and that's everything! The main section of the generator is a large rectangular part with various cut-outs onto which you glue the nicely cast fuel tank, the rear axle, and the front stub-axle that attaches to the steering arm. A small L-shaped flap fits onto the top, optionally covering up the control panel, and the four wheels are made up from separate hubs and tyres, which will doubtless please folks that don't like painting hubs. The steering arm is added to the front in whichever orientation you like, and that's construction over with. The units were usually painted a bright yellow, but are sometimes found in green, and would probably be quite banged about, so weathering, chipping and sun-bleaching could all feature. The decal sheet is pretty large considering the size of the model, but it includes the afore-mentioned control panel, stencils and white edge-definition striping. The cable is usually coiled up on the top of the unit, but that depends on whether you are planning on modelling it in operation or at rest. Conclusion Videoaviation always provide a very well researched and detailed kit in my experience, and this unit, which is also available in 1:72 (I am reviewing the 1:48 edition), is no exception. Construction is very simple, and the casting blocks have been attached efficiently to reduce the amount of preparation time, which even extends to the main body, which has a significant undercut between body and block, to ease clean-up and reduce the likelihood of cutting the part incorrectly. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of

  22. Twenty hours or so after I filled the base of my vacformed Dalek with casting resin I found a small area where the plastic had softened to something a bit like stiff chewing gum: It more or less elastically recovers: I don't know the resin chemistry but it is one of those clear embedding types, I got it from Hobby Craft and filled it with some powdered filler and black weathering powder. It only appears to have affected a small area about 1 by 2cm. Has anyone seen anything like this? Will the plastic reharden or is there anything I can proactively do about it like putting it in a low oven, exposing to UV light, nuclear radiation, etc.?
  23. Heads (2 sets) 1:35 legend Productions Injection moulded styrene figures have improved greatly over the years, although they can never outstrip a good quality, well moulded resin figure in terms of individuality and sheer level of detail. A good compromise, and a first step on the road to custom building your own figures from resin heads, hands and feet with armatures for the bodies, is to get some of these head sets and add them to stock styrene figures to give them a more unique look, and move away from the standard styrene "grim but expressionless" faces. Heads Set (LF0111) This set includes twelve heads on two casting blocks, all of which are attached by their necks. The necks are of course disposable if the need arises, or you can bury them in a hole in the receiving figure to improve the look further. There are different facial shapes, hairstyles and expressions from happy, through grim to a few that look like they might be dead or asleep. Hairstyles include bald, shaved, centre partings and side partings as well as swept back and plain messy. Casting is excellent and the hair texture nicely done. The facial types lend themselves to European figures and all of them are without hats or facial hair. German Heads #2 WWII (LF0112) This again includes twelve heads on two casting blocks, all of which are attached by their helmets this time for ease of removal and clean-up. Again, a range of expressions is featured, most have their helmets strapped on, while a few have them loose, and one is wearing a cold weather scarf around his neck and under his helmet. The helmets vary from bare metal to covered, with one fallschirmjager (paratrooper) close-fitting helmet, and three with goggles, that lend themselves to motorcycle or desert figures. Because they have been cast essentially upside-down, there are a few bubbles at the base of the necks, and one or two in the chins, where they have become lodged during casting. The necks are buried in the torso so they won't matter, but the chin bubbles will require a tiny bit of filler to make good. A small gripe that is easy to fix, but worth mentioning nonetheless. Conclusion Fantastic sculpted heads that will give your figures a new lease of life and individuality. A couple of bubbles to clean up, but otherwise excellent quality. Don't forget to wash them in warm water before use though, to remove any residual mould-release agent. Highly recommended Review sample courtesy of

The early atlas sm-65 only had 2 engines, the sustainer engine, the middle one was,nt needed,so i will have to remove that?,anyway thought id have a go at the nosecone, the only bit apart from the engine, which is different from any other Atlas....visually?first off look up references, photos, peter always rockets of the world, the bible? The nose cone has a straight adaptor from the tank to warhead, then a couple of steps to intergrate the warhead, looked easy,? right what can i use? thats the common base, leftover upper stage from a mach 2 thor missile, only need the interstage junction.... on top of the atlas shoulder... sorting a couple of increments with the angles right, found that the tops of the shuttle srb,s was a match for the angle,if cut in the right place? was going to use a missile as the warhead, but it was wrong diam? so,found that martins models, resin thrusters off a saturn kit,in a box, havnt got round to building yet,wayhay....great fit,had to round off the warhead though. the bits, also a section off a upper stage saturn ib. so needs some milliput on the joints yet,and some ribbing strips, around the cone, and a little bit of sanding..... but to me thats a not bad build? alongside the score variant, more of that later? cheers off too sand /paint Don
