  1. The RealSpace resin Block II CSM in 1/96 scale was just about the only replacement available for the Revell Block I parts included in their Saturn V kit, and I used one when I was building my own Saturn V for the fiftieth anniversary of the first moon landing: I was never happy with it, for various reasons, and ordered a second kit soon after completing my Saturn V build. But I only recently got around to trying to build that one, encouraged by the availability of 3D printed parts to fix some of the kit's shortcomings. This went well, and then it went very badly indeed, as horrifically detailed in my build log: In the meantime, I'd learned from someone who posted on my blog that the new RealSpace kit was a significant improvement on the old kit I'd been working on (until I accidentally destroyed it). So I ordered another RealSpace kit, and detailed it with salvaged parts from my broken build. There were several problems with the old kit, some of which have been rectified in the new version. The old kit provided no RCS thruster quads or High Gain Antenna array, and suggested you use the corresponding Revell kit parts---grossly misshapen and grossly undersized, respectively. The new kit provides some nice 3D printed RCS thrusters, but no HGA. The old kit's resin umbilical fairing was lopsided and misshapen; the new 3D printed version is a much better shape, but still lacking in surface detail. All the versions of the kit have the docking probe moulded as part of the resin Command Module---fragile and full of flash, and I've never had one arrive intact in the box. The old kit was deficient in length---the aft bulkhead of the Service Module is a pour surface, and both my old kit versions petered out just aft of the rear radiators---the new kit is much better proportioned in that regard. All kit versions have an inappropriately raised area around the CM hatch and optics penetration, and a wrongly shaped outer hatch window. I found the new kit to have a poorer surface finish than the old one---the SM in particular was covered in corrugations, and lacking the (raised) panel lines provided in the old kit. The new kit provides a 3D printed aft heatshield and SPS nozzle, both a great improvement on the single resin part previously provided, and much more accurately proportioned. Disappointingly, though, the new kit is a poor fit for the Revell SLA, undersized by a good half-millimetre all round. The old kit was a perfect fit. So: A bit of surface work, removing the raised areas and smoothing some of the lumpiness out of the SM. I scribed some basic panel lines, but find it very difficult to get a consistent result when scribing resin, so didn't lay down as much detail as I might have done on styrene. I scored a partially used set of New Ware Saturn V photoetch from eBay, which gave me a replacement hatch, optics penetration, and some detail for the umbilical connector. I removed the kit docking probe, and replaced it with a very nice part from The Aerospace Place via Shapeways. Likewise, a nice HGA from the same source, albeit provided with an overly long support arm which was easily trimmed. I made the SM scimitar antennae by punching out some sheet styrene, added a hatch handle and some rims to the fill/drain ports with a little bit of styrene strip, and made some tiny feedhorns for the bare HGA dishes out of 0.25mm fibreoptic threads with melted ends. Painting was with Tamiya white primer, Xtreme Metal Chrome and Aluminium, and various other Tamiya paints. Decals are from Space Model Systems, and are a bit mad---I was detailing at a level considerably finer than the imperfections in the resin! Here are some reference photos---details from AS10-27-3873 and AS15-88-11963: Here's what I came up with. I'm not thrilled with the resin surface, or the slightly irregular scribing that resulted. But after the various tribulations involved in producing it, I'm just glad to having something to show for the work! Finally, a comparison of the old and new versions of the kit: The old kit (left) was quite poorly proportioned, particularly the SM and SPS nozzle. Horrible RCS thruster quads and a feeble HGA from the Revell kit. Damaged docking probe, misshapen umbilical fairing. I also now hate my red detailing around the CM thrusters, which I achieved by punching holes in Bare-Metal Foil to show paintwork beneath.
  2. 2 quite old ones here,an art car French Venturi car from the 1995 Le Mans race. A Starter resin kit,I replaced the nondescript wheels with a set from Renaissance, but they’re ever so slightly too big,but still a big improvement. It doesn’t matter what I do this picture only shows upside down!!! Grrr I’ll try another one,the fastest car I think at Le Mans 1989, a Group C Nissan. Hope you like,Chris.
  3. Hi everyone, here below are two a bit out of the ordinary competition Jaguars. The white one is built from a fairly old Provence Moulage kit in lockdown,Jaguar E2A from the Le Mans race of 1960. It is what it looks like a bit of a cross between a D type and E type Jag. Entered by the Cunningham team and driven by Dan Gurney and Walt Hansgen,it didn't finish the race. I think the car was built to test out the independent rear suspension layout that was introduced on the E type Jaguar. The other sleek green car is a Jaguar XJR11 Turbo from the Japanese Sportscar series of 1991. A Starter resin kit,no cats were hurt by having the cats whiskers used as aerials! Chris.
  4. Following on from My Quick in the box review:- I've decided to start the build blog on My Angel Interceptor. As mentioned in My Fireball XL5 build, I'm going to be away from the bench for a while due to going in hospital for some surgery, but while I'm waiting to go in I thought I would do what I can on this. A general dry-fit to see where We're going (12" Rule for scale):- Gap at wing centre joint and slight hollow will be easily sorted out with P38 (Bondo) filler, I was expecting a few areas that will require trimming and blending in due to the large castings having different shrinkage rates, as stated in the instructions:- Wing fences are not provided in the kit, so I cut slots into wing with the bandsaw to fit styrene sheet ones, I will probably widen the slots with a couple of hacksaw blades taped together to fit thicker sheet, they appear to be thicker on all the reference that I have got:- Wings bonded together with two-part epoxy whilst weighted down with a small weight!!:- When dry, fit to rear fuselage section was checked, adjusted and bonded together (no clothes pegs were harmed during this procedure!):- Nose section parts required similar adjustment before bonding together:- Another Dry-fit and trimmed canopy (good fit and good clarity) checked:- Joint between fin body and seperate intake section (to allow for painting and mesh fitting) will need a styrene sheet insert, sections line up better with this and tailplane looks OK:- That's where I'm upto at the moment, nothing really hard to sort out for a limited run kit, will post again next weekend. Thanks for looking in and...... Keep Sticking! Cheers, Pete
  5. Hi Everyone! I am pleased to present My completed Fireball XL5 Project using UNCL Kits recentley-released kit, purchased from Timeless Hobbies. 6. Hi Everybody! Will be taking a short break from My Trumpeter 1/200 hood build because............................... I had / suffered / experienced () a major Birthday last week, and My Darling Wife Completely surprised Me with UNCL's latest kit , an 18" long Fireball XL5 Resin Kit! For those of You that hav'nt experienced said Major Birthdays , a little background info:- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireball_XL5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ifS2nP53Zs OK , let's have a look:- Kit arrives in a standard cardboard box with a coloured end-label:- A layout of the major parts (Note colour demarcation lines are scribed into parts - very useful!) :- Two clear canopies plus two of each alternate Astrodomes supplied plus resin framework for Astrodomes:- A bag of parts:- Alternative fins for Fireball Junior:- Very little clean-up required on parts! A single printed colour instruction sheet with a CD containing the same sheet as a .pdf file :- A fret of photoetch parts for the cockpit framing and cover strips for canopy joints :- Clearly printed Decals, white ones do not show up well on photos :- Sorry, duplicated photo below, cannot delete!! I will be mounting the finished model on a scratch-built cradle and section of launch rail , I was going to mount it using magnets but owing to it's weight I may mount it permanentaly. ( Any flights around the workshop being done beforehand..............) All in all, very impressed with Uncle Bill's new kit, have got His Angel Interceptor in the stash, and will look at getting His Thunderbird 1 & 3 kits as well! Off the give the bits a bath now, will start cleaning up and assembly Tomorrow! Keep Sticking! Cheers, Pete
