Continuing in my Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm theme, here's the latest progress on my A4-G Skyhawk. It's the Fujimi kit in 1/72 scale. I nearly didn't get this far as I was having a lot of doubt about my being able to do the camouflage. Some very helpful advice from fellow member Mumbles (Thank you Sam), who built the same scheme late last year, gave me the confidence to try out the blue tac sausages and tape method. In fact I used UHU white tac. I masked it free hand using an enlarged printout of the scheme as reference. Now if I did this again (and no doubt I will as I have a 1/48 TA-4G on the bench now) I'd keep the underside clean until after painting - no pylons, no undercarriage doors, etc. And here's the result! The greys are Gunze H61 IJN Grey (lighter) and H317 Grey. Lots more to do now but I'm now on the home stretch.

What would people recommend as a base kit for the above. I'd be interested in both 1/72 and 1/48 scale. It would be built as an RAN unit. I've googled like crazy but nothing really jumps out. Cheers, Andrew

It's been a long time in the making, but here at last is my 1/72 Wessex Mk. 31B. She is built as a tribute to my father, who served aboard the carrier HMAS Melbourne and at the Naval Air Station Nowra, and would no doubt have encountered her at times during his career. The rotor fold and tail fold are both scratch-built with varying degrees of success and frustration from plastic card. Primary paints used are Mr Hobby H1 (white) and H 328 (Blue) which appear to be quite a good match for the original. I wasn't as impressed with the aftermarket RAN decals, in particular the yellows and blues were quite coarse. I assume they they were a "bad batch" as they came from a reputable maker. The original build thread is here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234935730-172-italeri-wessex-ran/ Thanks for looking.

From the A-4 GB, the Fujimi 1/72 E/F kit built as an A-4G in the hybrid scheme that appeared when the RAN Skyhawks crossed the ditch and entered RNZAF service in mid 1984. There were a few variations on this but this is what 877/NZ6218 looked like for it's ferry flight and the immediate period afterward before the full complement of RNZAF markings were applied. Apart from the roundels the scheme is RAN, with an RNZAF SEA schemed tank on the centreline station. The roundels and rescue markings are slightly oversize, but they are the closest ones I had in my stash. The rest of the markings are from an Aussie Decal set included with some boxings of the A-4E/F sold in Australia. The pale colour is Tamiya AS-5 light blue, but it changes hue slightly depending on the lighting conditions, much like the full size aircraft did. Weathering was kept to a minimum (none in fact) as you see little if any on the real things in contemporary photos - they were very clean and tidy looking in general. Thanks for looking!

Second model for the year completed. Again this one has been ~90 % complete for the last 18 months or so. Built straight out of the box with brush painted Tamiya acrylics. Not one of my best, but then again not one of my worst either . Thanks for looking.
