  1. Hi, In net I have found photo of marvelous 1:18 scratchbuild model (by A. Clark) of HP Heyford in apparently WWII markings (it is on this web page): http://www.modelaircraftmagazine.com/full_site/frames/events/reviews/006.htm On the other hand I have found in IWM resources a photo of this machine (K5184) : http://media.iwm.org.uk/iwm/mediaLib//22/media-22817/large.jpg There is a difference in fin flashes size. Has anybody other photos of HP Heyford from WWII time to share with? - I am collecting data to do a model (converted if needed) from Matchbox/Revell kit. Besides details of markings I am interesting in hardware differences - there are differences mostly in engines, I think between the variants. I will appreciate help. Cheers Jerzy-Wojtek
  2. I wanted to depict the two main aircraft in Northern Ireland in the late 1970s/ early 1980s. The Wessex is HC.2 XR498 'X' of 72 Squadron. This is the Italeri Sea Horse kit for the square windows, with the Heritage aviation conversion kit and Modeldecal decals for a Swift bird. Next up is the 33 Squadron Puma. This is the old Airfix kit OOB with the addition of PJ productions' Vietnam Helicopter Crew. My reference photos showed the Pumas to be fairly filthy so I tried to replicate that here. Thanks for looking
  3. Hi, I would like to share with my attempt to build HP Hampden from the Airfix kit, 1/72. I made some additional details with rear guns and pilot gun sight etc.. Decals from drawer - the markings presents machine from Squadron 106 RAF, ZN.L (P1228) based at Finningley UK in winter 1940/41 with darkered white on fuselage roundels and fin flashes. The machine was lost during bombing Hamburg on 1st. Dec., 1941 with all New Zealander crew killed. Comments welcome and regards Jerzy-Wojtek
  4. Hi Guys, I will build the Mauve 1/48 Kittyhawk III. I have some new decals from Model Alliance (set 48195) and a old etch set from Eduard (set 48-135?!). I will start this build next week. I hope to put some foto's up from the box and content than as well. Cheers,
  5. Hi guys, I want to get the right colors for my Hawker Hunter T8 "Admiral's Barge" and understand that it's painted in "RAF roundel blue". Unfortunately I couldn't find any color reference to the colors I have (Revell, Tamiya, Mr. Hobby Color). Can somebody help me with the right color / color mix from the aforementioned color brands. TIA. Cheers, Michael
  6. Hi! As my first one here, I choose the RAF's turbopop trainer. I have got it from my girlfriend and she told me that I want to build "the black one". So I had no longer any options, she told me what I want to do... After opening the box, I had mixed feelings. However Airfix had improoved a lot, there is sill some need here to get even more better. Anyway the decls are excellent. I added the Pavla's seats, whiches were far oversized, I had to grind a lot, and also I had to build a new cockpit, to gain some extra space and correct the Airfix's fault and also, I had to make a new canopy. I scretched the undercarriage too. However I thinned the plastic in the nose and added as many wight that I cuold, did not managed to ballance it. So Its still sitting on it's butt. After a jolly time with the sandpapers and blades the model was primed with Mr. Surfacer, coated w/ Gunze acrylic flat black and finished with a lot of Future layers. And let me show you from the biggining: Some problems with the widht. The "edge" is as wide as the black line. Factory version to the left and corrected to the right: Pavla seats didnt fit. Minor corrections: Cockpit done: Vacu formed canpoy: Steps: Compaired to a Flanker : Painting: The trainer sqadron : Of course the matchbox will be replaced.
  7. Hello there, I am looking for RAF 512 Squadron C-47 paint scheme layout and colors. Circa 1944. KG330. If anyone has any links or any info that would me much appreciated! I have found one picture but of not the whole aircraft. http://www.vintagewings.ca/Portals/0/Vintage_Stories/News%20Stories%20K/Twice%20Lucky/TwiceLucky36.jpg It will be used for a 1/32 Guillows kit
  8. Hi folks could someone confirm the colours of RAF tomahawks of 26 Sqn based at Gatwick.I would like to build RM-D AH893 for the P40 GB.One further question on looking at a clear photo of a trio of them they are camera equipped which complicates things, were they carried on the one side or both?
  9. First showing of this new kit from Milicast- I must say I'm very impressed, went together well, captures the look and character of the subject. I will have to buy more from Milicast! The Fordson WOT3 was a 30cwt (1.5t) class vehicle, and was one of Fordsons War Office designs You can see the family resemblance to the WOA1 & 2, WOT1 & 1A, and WOT2, in the bonnet and cab. Painted in the mid-war scheme of SCC2 (Brown) and SCC14 (Blue-black), this is depicted as a Coastal Command example based at RAF Aldergrove. I did my usual of a little, restrained weathering with pastels. I really like this kit; I think Milicast have captured the whole look and feel of the original, and the casting was superb.
  10. Hi all, thought I would join in with a simple OOB build of Airfix,s Tomahawk after one fell into my trolley today in Aldi,Now this kit has defeated me twice since it was released so hopefully third time lucky,I had a rumage in the spare decals box and have a set of AVG decals as well as the desert scheme in the box but I think I can cobble together decals to build a 26 sqn machine based in the UK at Gatwick just waiting for colour confirmation in the discussion section.
  11. Ok at the risk of incurring everyones wrath as this has been asked before I am struggling with the maths of this all/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Air_Force_roundels if a roundel is 35 inches does each band reduce by an inch. I am not getting the ratio thing http://www.homepages.mcb.net/bones/Aviation/roundels/RAF_Roundels.htm Type A1 35" Ratio 7:5:3:1 next if I need to go to millimetres - forgive me I grew up with the SI system - 35inch = 35 /48 = 0.729 in mm = 0.729 * 24,5 = 18.51 Camo and Markings Page 24 by Paul Lucas confuses me even further!!!!!!!!!!! How do I interpret these sizes!!!!!! Now I loose the plot and the will to live - whats blue etc
  12. Hello All! Does anyone know if the green used on RAF Merlin helicopters is the same as the green used on Spitfires, or is a different green altogether? thanks, -Ramon
  13. I am sure this has been debated and delay with elsewhere and I recall some seeing colour pictures which show a more lighter red and blue for the Battle of Britain period for Spitfires and Hurricanes, However "Official Camo and Markings 1939-1945" indicates roundels to be painted in Red and Blue which if one compares the colour chart in the book is the darker colours. Kit manufacturers seem of little help when comparing decals. Was there indeed a lighter shade that was then later changed to the standard seen after 1941?
  14. RAF Roundels Paint Mask Set A1 1:32 Raikisan! When the painting is finished and the decals are going on ok, but you really can’t that painted on look you are striving for, the only way forward is to actually paint them on. A new company, new to me at least has begun producing masks for just such a product. The set reviewed here is the RAF roundel Type A1 and provides a selection of roundels in different sizes. Cut out of a green kabuki type tape the there are the following types included:- 35” x 12 49” x 8 56 x 6 The instructions are simple and straight forward. 1. Place the pre-cut square mask that surrounds each roundel into the desired position. Spray a light coat of white, although this can be preceded by a light coat of grey primer. Leave to dry 2. Place all the ring masks into position ensuring they are aligned correctly. 3. Remove the outer ring and spray the yellow and leave to dry. 4. Replace outer ring and remove next ring in. Spray the blue and leave to dry. 5. Replace the blue ring and remove the middle disc. Spray the red colour and leave to dry. 6. Carefully remove all the masks and the completed roundel will be revealed. Conclusion Although they take a little time and require some care in getting aligned you just can’t beat the look of painted on markings, and this set will be very useful for the modeller who wants it just right. Raikisan already have a good selection of roundel masks suitable for all eras available on their website. Very highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  15. Hello! Here's my 1/72 Airfix Lancaster BII, which I started working on in April 2014. It was already finished at the end of October and went on display at the Wiener Modellbaumesse (Vienna Model & Toy Fair), where IMPS Austria were attending. Now I finally managed to get pictures taken, thanks to Mr. Wolfgang Rabel of IGM Cars & Bikes. This is the 1/72 Airfix kit with some Eduard photo etch added, representing a machine of 408 (Goose) Squadron, 6 Group RCAF, RAF Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire, July 1944. The model was airbrushed using Gunze/Mr Hobby acrylics. TT Thanks for looking! Cheers from Vienna, Austria Roman
  16. Hi all. While waiting for the new Tamiya Corsair a question has wiggled it's way into my mind and just won't leave. What kind of bombs/rockets would a Corsair in FAA service be carrying - british or US made? Please expand this question to all US-built planes in FAA/RAF service during WW2. I seem to remember seeing P-40'es with british made bombs but does that also apply to FAA planes in the SEA theatre? Which brings forth another question: who makes WW2 british bombs/rockets in 1/32, 1/48, 1/72? Thanks for any input! Hans J
  17. The first week of November has seen some interesting movements at Newquay Airport. Unfortunately I missed the Italian Army Do.228 and Avanti which along with the Czech C-295 visited in connection with 'Exercise Arrcade Fusion' which is being held at RAF St Mawgan. Chinook HC2, ZA679 came in on the 30th Oct and stayed the night after developing a problem. ZH899 arrived on Saturday 1st Nov with crew and equipment to repair ZA679. 18. So did the RAF biplanes hastily camouflaged in 1938 have the "shadow shading" or whatever it was on the lower wings? What colours would those have been, if so? Also, does anyone make acrylic colours of them?
  19. Hi all. Thought I'd post a couple of models that I built some 14 years ago. Here we have my effort of producing the RAF Aerocobra of 601 Sqn, Duxford, 1941. IIRC, this started from the Monogram kit and enhanced with PE and a little scratch building. Can't remember where the decals came from. Here we have my effort of producing a Spitfire Mk II(LR) of 152 Sqn, 1941. IIRC, this started from the Tamiya Mk I kit and the slipper tank was scratch built by scaling up 1/72 example that I had. Again, can't remember where the decals came from. Hope you like. Comments & criticisms welcome. Stuart
  20. Ok well my obsession with Phantoms continues and in particular I love building the Fujimi kits as they are superb. Indeed this is my fourth Fujimi Phantom this year and I only have one left in my stash! Its a shame we haven't seen more of them since Amerang became the main importers of Fujimi kits - in fact if anything there seems less of them about now than earlier this year! So this kit is out of the box with the exception of the decals which are the excellent Model Alliance RAF Germany part 1. I used Gunze Mr Color for the paints and various Alclads for the engines and pods and of course Matte varnish to finish it off. I think it is one of my favourite builds of the year. So now I need to finish of my Hasegawa 1:48 Phantom - Fleet Air Arm! Any comments welcome Chris
  21. Hello, here's my current 'big' project - Airfix' 1/72 Avro Lancaster BII. I received this kit as a review example via IMPS Austria. Along with the basic kit, I also received a few upgrade sets from Eduard: Exterior, Bomb Bay, Flaps and their useful kabuki masks. As usual we start with the cockpit: I find the level of detail is more than enough for a 1/72 kit, especially since most of the interior parts are painted black. The metal parts for the bomb bay are plentiful - and it's a big piece. In fact it is bigger than my folding device, so I had to use a ruler for folding up the longer parts. Details added to the landing gear: ... and painted: Adding the ignition cables to the engine: ...and painted: Firewall in the engine bay: Fuselage halves closed: The covers for the engines are a poor fit. No matter how you position them, there's always a gap at some end. Now let's work on the Eduard flaps: You need a steady hand for these parts. Model primed with Tamiya Grey out of the rattle can, with one side of the flaps already attached: Pre-shading underway: I sprayed the upper surface colour "RAF Brown" (Gunze H72) first, then covering the spots to remain Brown with Uhu Tac rolls (I believe this stuff is called 'Blu Tac' in England). I started with the left upper wing, simply because I didn't have enough of the Uhu Tac stuff to cover up the whole airframe, before moving on to the rest. I never experienced any problems with this method - until now. For some reason, the Uhu Tac left a shiny demarcation line on the surface. This could be either due to the hot weather recently (over 30 degrees where I live), a chemical reaction, or simply because the Uhu Tac stayed on too long. However, I hope to cover it up with subsequent Goss/Matt cotes. Here you can see the problem: As soon as the upper sides are finished, I will turn my attention to the lower side. Since it will be painted Black, I chose to reverse my usual mode of painting. I'm still testing how to achieve a interesting monotone surface in Black; my plan is to spray the undersides dark Brown, then add pre-shading, and finally painting it black with a number of highly diluted coats of Black to let the Brown base colour shine through. More on this soon! Thanks for watching.
  22. Time to start another build; I had a browse of the model catalogues online, and decided on a Harrier. I have recently been able to sit in a couple of GR.3 cockpits at a couple of museums; the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection in Wiltshire, and Aeroventure in Doncaster: I was born in March 1982, just as the Falklands War was kicking off..so I thought it would be good to do a Harrier from that conflict. Also, the Harrier GR.3 was the first Airfix kit that I made completely, fully painted and decalled 20 years ago; it was this one, given to me as a present in a starter set, with glue and brush and paints supplied: So, I had a look around the web and in my local town centre (Reading). I found lots of the new tooling GR.3 in Hobbycraft, and one in the WH Smith/Modelzone, both selling it for £15. There is an old-fashioned model shop in Reading, and they also had the kit, priced at £12.60. I bought it from there; a nice bargain, and I much prefer to give the business to the small model shops before they disappear. Anyway, here is the box: 3 of the sprues: 3 more sprues and the clear sprue: And the instructions and decals: Being a new tooling, the parts are very well produced, and should mke a great build. I have done the new tool Vampire and Me109 recently, so this should be equally enjoyable.
  23. The UK Empire Test Pilot School uses a single SAAB Gripen apparently to train pilots.... The airplane has a blue vertical stabilizer, with a gold griffin or lion above the initials ETPS... Can anyone tell me if the symbol represents the type of airplane... or the school...? Thanks....
  24. http://www.airliners.net/photo/UK---Air/Airbus-A400M-Atlas/2495502/L/&sid=c1be93a9b0f91d275b4683b457161514 To be fair, it does look much like any other A400M.... but some decals would be nice. Andrew
  25. PLEASE READ So, news has it that the 2 Lancasters and Vulcan will be flying together at RAF Waddington on Thursday and then parked on the runway (21/08/14) The AVRO aircraft will be there for some time, but it will be ideal to get there early.
