  1. I present my Revell 787-8 Dreamliner in the Qatar Airways livery. I saw this Aircraft at EDI in May 2017 and wanted to build it as the pilots waved at my then 2 year old Daughter and it made her day. I also find the colours of Qatar Airways very elegant. The build was OOB. I did enjoy the build of this kit, however some of the ā€˜extra detailsā€™ arenā€™t including in this kit like the antennas. I like how well the kit goes together and only minimal filling was required (although I am trying to get the hang of the filling and sanding process). I think I might buy the Zvezda kit in the future, although I have another Revell 787-8 in my stash which Iā€™m thinking will be ā€˜LOT Polish Airlinesā€™. I was struggling to find the right shade of grey for the upper fuselage, as it looks very different under various lighting. I mixed my own version using Revell Aqua colours Light grey 76 and 371, it might not be 100% but I am happy with the end result. It was brush painted, which can probably be picked up from the pictures. The White is Halfords Appliance White, and the greys are a mixture of Revellā€™s Aqua colour range. The Decals are from Ray at 26 and complimented with the kit decals. This was also my first attempt at using AA ā€˜Photo realā€™ windows and cockpit decals, and I donā€™t think I ever want to use anything else again. They are excellent and really add that extra bit of life and detail to the model. My photos hopefully depict a scene of her arriving on Stand, with the Airbridge attached and views from the ramp. (Sorry if there are too many photos). Thanks for looking and any comments and constructive criticism is always welcomed. Regards, Alistair
  2. I am currently working on a Revell 787-8 kit in 1/144which will be displayed in the Qatar Airways livery. I like the kit, I tend to find that the larger Revell kits go together really well and they are easier to work with than the smaller variants in 1/144 Scale. I had to make the antennas as they arenā€™t supplied in the kit, and I think with more practice I can make the missing ā€˜bumpsā€™ on the upper fuselage. I think I am becoming a big fan of the Zvezda brand of kits, the only thing that would improve them overall is the kit decals having more detail. I am going to attempt some Authentic Airliner decals for the first time with this build and hope it will add to the ā€˜realnessā€™ of the model. It is fully built now, and will start with the main decals soon and wait for the windows and cockpit decals to arrive to complete the model. I built the base board myself using an old piece of cardboard, to help display the larger models as my smaller one would look out of place with the 787 on it, and I plan on building an A350 and B773 soon too. My daughter was quite upset that the people couldnā€™t get on to the plane so I had to make her an Airbridge to enable them to get on and off... the things we do for children šŸ˜‚. My photos show her arriving on stand and then with the Airbridge attached. Will post more photos as the model progresses and the finished product in RFI once done šŸ‘šŸ». Regards, Alistair
  3. I fell in love with photos of Qatarā€™s beautiful Exocet-armed Sea King/Commandos in the late, lamented World Air Power Journal back during the Gulf War years. I waited patiently, hoping that some aftermarket company would produce suitable decals, but that never happened. Eventually, with the proliferation of good online photos, I found an image clear enough to use to reproduce the Arabic inscription used on the tails of Qatar Emiri Air Forceā€™s Commandos and Gazelle helicopters. This done, I was able to make up and print my own decals on my PC. Chosen aircraft for my depiction was the oft-photographed QA33 (c/n WA922), one of (8) Commando Mk. 3s acquired by Qatar for the anti-shipping role, fitted to carry Exocet missiles. These aircraft serve with QEAFā€™s No. 8 Anti-Surface Vessel Squadron, operating from Doha. I tapped Revellā€™s popular 1/72 kit of the Sea King Mark 41 with Skua missiles as the basis for the project. The kit offered the necessary options for the required fuselage windows and many additional pieces like the intake filter and 6-blade tail rotor. I removed the molded-in floatation bags from the kit sponsons, then scratchbuilt the smaller ā€œthumbtackā€-style pop-out emergency floats and sponson-mounted sensor domes. [For a more complete account of the various changes to the kit, check out the build log here.] The Exocet missiles came from Italeriā€™s venerable NATO/US Aircraft Armament set, with scratchbuilt launchers and mountings. Paints for the attractive QEAF camouflage scheme are all Tamiya acrylics, mixed by eye (with more than a bit of trial and error involved). Drybrushing and weathering with Testors ā€œsquare bottleā€ enamels, and artists oils. All decals home-made with the exception of the ā€œdotted lineā€ markings around the main entry and side fuselage door windows, which were borrowed from an old Model Decal modern German AF sheet. Really a fun project, and very satisfying to have it done after so many years. I hope you enjoy the photos. Special thanks to members MarkdipXV711, Rodders154 and andyf117, whose great work on these forums provided major inspiration for this project. Thanks also to all who followed along on the build.
  4. Have had great fun following Andrew's gorgeous Sea King build, so I thought I'd throw mine in as well. Fell in love with photos of Qatar Emiri Air Force's Exocet-armed Sea King/Commandos in the old World Air Power Journal during the Gulf War, and it's only taken me 2+ decades to get around to it as a project. Kit is Revell Germany's lovely Sea King Mk. 41 w/Skua missiles. Some of the bits I need (like the six-blade tail rotor) are included in the kit as unused parts, much is being scratch-built. Exocets are coming from the Italeri 1/72 NATO ordinance set. This is what I'm going for, courtesy of Planespotters.net: http://www.planespotters.net/Aviation_Photos/photo.show?id=212004 Been hacking away at this one for a few weeks now, but the only photos so far are of the interior. Cockpit is stock kit with "spares" Eduard color harnesses added; aft cabin (which will not be highly visible) has generic frame, stringer and wiring detail added from styrene strip and rod, thread, wire, stretched sprue and assorted leftovers. All questions, comments, or accusations of diminished capacity cheerfully received. I'll try to get some photos of more recent work up this weekend.
  5. A number of the folks commenting on my QEAF Sea King build have lamented the lack of available aftermarket decals for Qatar's Air Force. Since I ended up making and printing my own decals on my PC, I thought I'd share the bit that was hardest to come by, the inscription (in Arabic) on the tail boom/fuselage of the oft-photographed QEAF Sea Kings and Gazelles. Below is a link to the downloadable file (on Dropbox) of the "stencil" version of the inscription which I created in MS Paint. It's a TIF file, so it can be opened in Paint or any other graphics program and manipulated if necessary. (I paste the final image into a Word document and resize it there as required, then print out onto clear decal paper from there.) The link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2f5vlnoc6ut8mdm/Qatar%20Emiri%20Air%20Force%20inscription.tif?dl=0 Hope it proves useful.
