I attach here photos of my recently completed Privateer, built out of the box (+ some home made improvisations) from an original Matchbox kit that has sat in the box for 40 years. The problems with this kit are well known, and as expected this was a troublesome build (if you want to know details, visit my personal webpage; link in my signature panel). Still, I really wanted to build a Privateer, the idea of converting a B-24 kit was just too daunting, and I found it for a bargain in eBay (currently these kits are going for more than $200 AUD - more than 3 times my investment...). Surprisingly, the decals performed like champs, even I opened the box though they were all warped, yellowed and stuck to the flimsy paper that was supposed to "protect" them. In fact, it was nothing that 8 weeks of exposure to sunlight could not cure. I also stuck with the original engine cowlings, even though sampling the internet would make you think these are gross abominations that misrepresent the original (I honestly could not see what the fuss was all about; pretty OK for 1/72 scale). Whereas the propellers did look wrong, I did my best to make this less visible using the time-honoured technique of sanding. One irritating aspect of this build was that Tamiya cement (both the normal and the quick-setting) did not work well with the plastic: seams that I thought were long sealed tended to pop up again days later. This created multiple cycles of re-sanding, re-gluing, re-masking and re-painting, particularly along the joint between halves of the fuselage, and half-wings. I am not sure what the solution is, but if you are lucky enough to find one of these to build (they have been out of production for a while), it may be useful to try a different type of cement. Anyway, this seems to be the only kit of the PB4Y-2 around, so if you (like me) really like this plane, it is worth investing the time and effort. There were a few things I would do differently if given another chance, but I think it makes a fine addition to my collection.- 55 replies

Hello All, My next project is a Privateer. I'm using the Revell re-pop of the Matchbox kit. It's for a friend whose dad flew in one for the US Coastguard back in the 40s/50s, so there will be some light conversion to remove the armament. This will be a wheels-down desktop model (gonna need a bigger desk...), so I'm hoping to keep it simple and avoid AMS. Hello All, After several years on the shelf of shame, my Matchbox/Revell Privateer is done. It has been converted to the Coastguard version and the next time I see him it is going to a pal of mine. His Dad flew in these back in the day. The conversion involved replacing the side gun turrets and with big picture windows and replacing front and rear turrets with observation canopies. I also added interior framing (mostly now invisible) wheel well detail, exhausts and some other minor engine detail. I could have done more accurisation and improvement, most notably the air intakes around the cowling and the propellers, but it isn't appropriate for a desktop model (and would have taken another two years at my rate). This is my first 4 engine "heavy" and my biggest model ever. My wife's only comment on it has been "It's very big isn't it" so I think she's quite happy it's going to my pal's house! The insignia are from an aftermarket sheet but all the lettering, coastguard emblems and engine grilles are all laser-printed onto clear decal paper. The "DANGER" lettering was applied on top of scrap white decal squares and the coastguard logo was applied over a spot of white paint to deal with the transparency issues. "Thunder over Flagstaff" was the name of the event yesterday, though early on, the only thunder to be heard was accompanied by lightning and heavy rain.... In fact, the local peaks had their first dusting of snow this season: Nevertheless, I felt I needed to put in an appearance, as this is my only chance to attend any sort of aviation event this year. An annual occasion (and more correctly a fly-in rather than an airshow), normally the military supports the event - in the past, we've had F-16s, F/A-18s, T-45s and AV-8Bs, as well as numerous helicopters over the years. Alas, there was not a single military aircraft to be seen this year, and precious little else as the inclement weather across the state decimated the fly-in. When we arrived, there were just two aircraft on the display ramp, including this nice CJ-6: Parked on the GA ramp were a couple of interesting aircraft amongst the usual spam cans - this very nice Embraer Phenom: ...and a Mitsubishi MU-2: This took off later - very noisy! As a regional airport, there are two (yes, TWO!) commercial flights a day, in and out, operated by SkyWest as part of the American Eagle program, using the Bombardier CRJ-100: As no-one seemed to know what was going on and little was happening, we were on the point of giving up the lost cause, when this happened: Woohoo! The world's last flying PB4Y Privateer, accompanied by a full-scale replica Spitfire IX! So, our patience was rewarded. We helped the Spitfire pilot (an acquaintance of my friend) park his steed, had a nice chat with him and one of the Privateer crew, then called it a day. An interesting morning, but it is a shame that the weather ruined the event, and the lack of military support was disappointing. I am hopeful things will be better next year.
