  1. Hello All, Just realised it's nearly 2 years since my last post. I have now completed my build of H.M.S. King George V, as she was delivered 1940 ish really a tribute to my grandad who served on board her for the entirety of world war 2. He joined her on the 1st October 1940 to 18th Nov 1946. From Stoker P.O. to Chief and then mechanic. Like all of us I'm sure, wish he was still here so I could quiz him about it. If he would tell me that is. Anyway enjoy the photos, very grateful for I.W.M. and their archive . its a huge resource and well worth the effort to trawl through it. I've also included some of the build as well I hope that is ok admin? I used the Pontos upgrade kit for Prince of Wales to KGV, Micromaster pom-poms, the excellent figures were from the Ukraine, anchors by North Star Models.
  2. Hello The warship virus is back and i have dusted my naval projects. While my Hood is still on hold, i have made progress on another project.I have started building Revells Schlachtschiff Bismarck a while ago and made also a start on the Tirpitz, also from Revell. Like so often building has started quite spontaneous and i think its now time to present them. Both are quite new kits and well detailed, to enhence this, i am using the Eduard BiG Ed set, a wooden deck from Pontos and turned metal barrels from RB and Master, i am not sure if i add more stuff. Depends on my budged. Building warships is complex so i am progressing on Bismarck first. Some pictures contain also parts from her sister ship. Both kits have some fit problems but nothing some putty and sanding can t cure. The first pics showing the hull of Tirpitz, with some sanding and filling. I am still fighting with with the different shape of her bow. Some fit problems and a new keel made from putty. I had started to build parts of the super structures. Quite different. Tirpitz on top. Some images of the pe parts, wooden deck and gun barrels Now on to Bismarck. The paint work on her hull is done but could need some touch ups. The decals for the water pass, and camo stripes were not used. Its more easy to match the the color of the baltic scheme stripes in her super structure. The poster from the Kagero books are a good back up for photos and a very helpful reference. It has also some flaws too. The Pontos deck is on, the red stripes are painted, the aft one is too small. Decals will do the rest of this detail. That was the point of the re start of the build. The main modelling time in the last 10 days were adding, folding and glueing on photo etched parts and removing and sanding away plastic details. But that is only the beginning. The bow. Still lots of details are missing here. The forecastle in the area of ht e first break water, the louvers got details. The barbette from turret "B" or Bruno got platforms around. Not every handrail of these platforms made it onto the model... Some midship details. Eduard has supplied the modeller with only some part of the steel decks before the catapult, Hope it looks good under the paint. I have also started to add watertight doors and the covers for the portholes. Very fiddly ! The roof of the aircraft hangar. Many of her boats were stowed here. The kit part before ...and after cutting and sanding every detail away and replacing them with pe parts. The hangar door was glued on after the pe parts were added on the roof top now i have a seam ( and also a damage ) And details around turret Caesar The turrets of the main guns have seen some work as well, more on those later. Thanks for looking Bernd
  3. Apologies in advance for another 1/200 build, but this is the largest & most expensive build I've ever attempted, so it warrants documentation. I've been wanting this kit ever since it was announced, and the addition of a full aftermarket kit that could be purchased with all added extras as one unit was ultimately very appealing. Over the last couple of years, I've built three ancient 1/600 Airfix kits for a friend of mine, who decided to buy this kit for me as a thank you. Suffice to say I was over the moon! At this point in time, I'm still working on acquiring the right paints for this kit in its 1944 pre refit camouflage scheme. But with the amount of PE involved, it could be a while before the airbrush comes out at any rate. So without further ado, let's do this... While waiting for the Pontos set to arrive, I did what I could in the meantime which included adding the bulkheads and sanding smooth the plugs on the bottom of the hull. I downloaded a set of Pontos instructions and set about removing the plastic parts as per the instructions. It was way easier than expected. That's all for now, More updates soon! Thanks for looking!
  4. Hello all, just bought a 1/350 Tamiya Bismarck, I’ve searched the net for a wooden deck kit, Sovereign won’t have one for 8-10 weeks and all the ones on eBay are coming from OZ or Far East, also tried Starling models they only had one for Tirpitz made by wood hunter...any suggestions where I might find one? failing that I’ll go and buy a different model and keep the Bismarck for later! Cheers
  5. I'm calling this one done. It's the now aging Trumpeter 1/350 kit #05302. The kit does need a bit of work but it's the only game in town for Britain's favourite warship and is therefore worth the effort. The turrets were replaced with Flyhawk HMS Hood Super Upgrade Set FH350099 which also came with range finders, UP launchers, blast bags and search light platforms. I started off detailing it with Flyhawk 350098 which whilst nice where it's nice, is also lacking in many ways in terms of the parts themselves. The instructions were poor by current standards. Happily White Ensign Models found a new owner before I got too far in so set PE3514 for HMS Hood was also used instead of Flyhawk in most areas, although the Flyhawk Pom Poms were nicer with turned barrels etc. The Vickers quad 0.5in guns on Hood were represented with 2-dimensional photo etching by both White Ensign and Flyhawk, and the plastic kit parts are vaguely shaped blobs. Happily, I met Park Yong-Joo who owns Tetra Modelworks at Telford last year and was so impressed with his little Vickers gun sets SA-35010 complete with turned barrels for the full 3-dimensional look that I left with some in my pocket as trade samples which are now fitted to Hood (I had to check the quality ). The wooden deck is Pontos Model 35020WD1 which as usual comes with anchor chain and dry transfer draft markings. The rigging is all made from Infini Model Super Fine Black Lycra Rigging (40 denier - or 0.068mm diameter) with the exception of the main crane which I ruined the PE cables for and used the 110denier version of the Infini Line to re-rig instead. All paints are (I'd hope obviously!) Sovereign Hobbies Colourcoats enamels. The primary shades used are RN02 - 507B, RN19 - WW2 RN Anti-fouling red although this was heavily distressed for a weathered look rather than a builder's model, RN24 - Corticene, RN01 - 507A, C02 - Matt Black, C03 - Matt White.
  6. Hello Britmodellers here are pictures from my current build on my bench ( or better one of them) Its Trumpeters H.M.S Hood in 1/350 scale. Its my first attempt to add more details on a 1/350 warship. The kit was started right after i got it in my LHS, as an intended oob build, like my other ships i had at that time. While building her ( that was in 2007 or 08 ) i discovered modelling sites like Modelwarships.com or websites about the real Hood, learning about the wrong main gun turrets and the posted ships had so much more details. After i became unhappy with my idea it quickly stalled. Filling and sanding the seam running around Hood hull didn t helped either. Some month back, i decided to give this one a second go, with some more budged and some more skill, i ordered an photo etched set from Eduard, gun turrets in resin from WEM, just before they went out of business, and a detail set from Trumpeter with beautiful turned brass gun barrels. Adding PE stuff proved difficult and progress was slow, a bit later i gor me a self adhesive wooden deck from Pontos and my Hood project was running well until live stopped this in summer 2015. ( incl. two BM Group Builds ) Now i have some days of until the new year and Hood is back from the mothballs.
  7. Colleagues: I am starting a new WIP on the recently-released Trumpeter 1:200 BB63, Missouri. I am using the opportunity offered by the release of this model, the Pontos PE and Trumpeter aftermarket parts, to try to improve my modeling skills. I am not an expert in any sense, but I am an amateur in the best sense. I love modeling and am at a place in my day job, my income, and my blood pressure that I can relax a bit more and devote time to what has been a very long hobby. I Live in Colorado, work in IT networking in a global association, and am just impressed as all get-out by the quality builders, the civility, and the class of the people on this list. Their patience with me (I was posting photos of my WIP in the middle of someone else's WIP...what a newbie goober I am!) is impressive--people on the 'net today don't usually tolerate any mistakes. I have my hull built and am working out the armament builds with the Pontos PE, and i am going to Best Buy to pick up a better camera. I welcome all your feedback, and am looking forward to being corrected lots of times--I learn best that way. I will ask questions, share frustrations, and I know this will take a while....my deadline inside is a few months, but I know I would like it ready for seasonal competitions/displays in the summer of 2015. Best regards, Rick Bauer
  8. Another big box of goodies just arrived from Pontos Model in South Korea. New products will be listed over the next day or two. ☺
  9. The “Bismarck” was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. Named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the primary force behind theunification of Germany in 1871, the ship was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in July 1936 and launched in February 1939. Work was completed in August 1940, when she was commissioned into the German fleet. Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were the largest battleships ever built by Germany, and two of the largest built by any European power. In the course of the warship's eight-month career under its sole commanding officer, Capt. Ernst Lindemann, Bismarck conducted only one offensive operation, in May 1941, codenamed Rheinübung. The ship, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, was to break into the Atlantic Ocean and raid Allied shipping from North America to Great Britain. The two ships were detected several times off Scandinavia, and British naval units were deployed to block their route. At the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Bismarck engaged and destroyed the battlecruiser HMS Hood, the pride of the Royal Navy, and forced the battleship HMS Prince of Wales to retreat; Bismarck was hit three times and suffered an oil leak from a ruptured tank. The destruction of Hood spurred a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy involving dozens of warships. Two days later, while heading for the relative safety of occupied France,Bismarck was attacked by obsolescent Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal; one scored a hit that rendered the battleship's steering gear inoperable. In her final battle the following morning, Bismarck was neutralised by a sustained bombardment from a British fleet, was scuttled by her crew, and sank with heavy loss of life. Most experts agree that the battle damage would have caused her to sink eventually. The wreck was located in June 1989 by Robert Ballard, and has since been further surveyed by several other expeditions. (source: www.wikipedia.com) 1/200 - Trumpeter's big Bismarck Several time ago, Trumpeter released the Bismarck as 2nd kit in their big 1/200 scale series (after the USS Arizona). Later, several more kits were released until today, and more future kits were expected. The kit of the Bismarck consists of more then 1.700 parts, 13 plates of PE-parts. The total length will be about 125cm. I already built one of the big Trumpeter kits with the additional parts by KA Models / MK.1 design (and more) several time ago. This time… I will do it in a different way.... First of all… what parts will be used to build the Bismarck as detailed as possible? This time… I will use the big “Advanced set” by Pontos Models which includes a lasered wooden deck, 318 turned brass parts, turned gun barrels for all guns on deck, 15 plates of PE-Parts, 27 resin parts, 25 life rings, dry transfer decals. Additionally used are some resin parts by CMK which were very high detailed. Further PE-Parts by Modellschlachtschiffe.de (which I still have on my stock from last Bismarck project). Fabric flags and EZ-line for rigging, decals for the big markings on the deck by Blue Ridge Models, and the wonderful 3D figues by North Star Models. Brass lamp risers for the display of the kit are ordered and needed before starting the project finally. Right now I am waiting for these to start the project. The painting of the kit will be done mostly with colors by Lifecolor in the camouflage 1941 scheme with the white/black stripes and the painted waves at the bow/stern. Weathering will be done with several oil colors, pigments, and other stuff. I hope that you would like this new project and that it will be of interest for you! Starting soon, as soon as the parts for the display arrived! I think it will become a long lasting project again..... and a lot of patience Cheers. Michael
