  1. Hello modellers, I just ordered a few things from ebay and scale model shop as well as an Aoshima aventador SV. The main things I am interested in with my order include a can of Mr super clear gloss clear coat and the tamiya polishing compound set. I am in the UK but managed to find the tamiya compounds at a reasonable but still quite expensive price. I understand that a clearcoat should be sanded to create a smooth surface and get rid of orange peel and then the compounds will buff out and remove scratches giving it a great shine. 3 questions: 1. Are the tamiya compounds the best and if not should I get some meguiars or something else? 2. Does anyone know of a good hobby store near london? 3. Can the compounds be used safetly on a 1k clear like mr super clear or is it too easy to burn through?
  2. The following article popped up in my Facebook feed the other day, it's about cleaning up and "detailing" as in polishing model cars. It's more about diecast models but might work for plastic kits, especially if painted with automotive paint. I didn't want to post the article without trying it myself and I happened to find a Bburago Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa that I built from a kit a long time ago. I think I was a teenager, no idea if you can even buy these kits any more. Link here to article. Here it is in "barn find" condition having sat in an open box in my loft for several years: I must have made this thirty years ago or so. I tried to add some painted detail to the interior tub (moulded in gloss black plastic I think). The advice is to use air duster to blow away dust then fine brushes (the following picture shows after dust removal). Then use an automotive quick detailer spray and a microfibre cloth to clean and polish (hopefully you can see the difference between the two halves of the rear deck). You can see how much dust was picked up and the spray used Finally in the "photo studio" This last one is my own invention; I created a black "infinity cove" with three black storage cases, illuminated with my desk lamp.
  3. Hi guys, I've just used Alclad Airframe Aluminum over Alclad gloss black for the first time &, also, first time using an airbrush too. I don't think I've made too bad a job if it, even though I say it myself but, there's a couple of spots that aren't as 'polished' as I'd like due, I think, to a slight lack of prep' on my part on those areas, ie: using polishing paste & finisher. I think I might not have got it quite as smooth as the rest. So guys, my big question is.... Is it ok to use fine polishing paste followed by finisher to give it a shine or maybe follow it up with another spray of Alclad Airframe Aluminium on top of the aforementioned polishing process. Not sure which way to go with it as I don't want to spoil something that I am, to be honest, quite pleased & proud of, especially as I haven't done modelling for nearly fifty years, add to that the fact that I'm on the bottom rungs of the airbrush ladder/learning curve. I'd be grateful for any advice from you more experienced modellers. For the record, my buld is a P51d Mustang/Roscoe Brown/Bunnie. Many thanks in advance & regards to all.
  4. Having discovered the joys of micro polish compound is there a cheap alternative for plastic (not just canopies)?
