F-4E Parachute (672382 for Fine Molds) 1:72 Eduard Brassin A lot of fast jets land at high speed, and need to slow down in a hurry, especially if they have landed at a shorter runway than usual. They do this by applying the wheel brakes, air-brakes, but also many jets have a parachute pack that they can deploy at the rear to further retard the speed of their aircraft. The ‘chutes don’t go on fire because they’re made from a tough, fire-resistant material, but also because the aircraft’s throttles are either at idle or in reverse, assisting with the braking. The F-4 was designed primarily as a carrier aircraft, where it would usually land using an arrestor hook, which brought it to a halt in a hurry, but that puts a huge stress on the airframe, shortening its lifespan, so is to be avoided when possible. When landing on runways, rather than deploying an arrestor wire, which is specialist equipment that might not always be available, they use parachute packs that are deployed from a compartment within the rear of the aircraft, inflating due to the airspeed, allowing some of the air to bleed through the slots in the material, as they’re intended to slow it down, not pull the tail off. They were used as a matter of course on even the longest runways, although crews were trained on parachute-free landings, just in case. The Set The ‘chutes utilised to slow an aircraft’s roll aren’t excessively large, and at 1:72 scale it fits with room to spare. As is usual with Eduard's larger resin sets, it arrives in a Brassin-themed black-and-yellow cardboard box, with the resin parts safely cocooned in bags, two sheets of protective dark grey foam, and the instructions folded around acting as additional padding. There are five 3D printed resin parts in two separate Ziploc bags, plus a fret of Photo-Etch (PE) brass in another bag with a sheet of white card protecting it from bending in the box. Adding a parachute to your Phantom model will be key to a landing or post-landing taxiing diorama, and the detail is exceptional, even having a flattened edge to the ‘chute where it presses against the runway after initial deployment. Construction begins with sliding the resin para-pack compartment into position, which has the door moulded open and out to the rear. The parachute is printed as a single part, which is attached to the base on the outer edge, and should be simple to remove and clean-up, adding a 1-4mm length of 0.27mm styrene rod from your own stores to the top, fixing the drogue bag to the end, and the drogue ‘chute itself on an eight-pointed PE star that represents the short lengths of cord that allows it to open. Between the parachute and the compartment is another 43mm length of 0.5mm rod with a 1mm ferrule for the last 2mm, all from your own stock, which ends with a 3D printed O-ring that gathers the individual cords of the parachute. These cords are depicted by fine PE strips that are anchored at the inner end by a strip, enabling you to form it into a small circle, spreading out the opposite ends so they can be attached to the circumference of the parachute, locating them on the tabs that project from the underside of the billowing ‘chute. Markings There are paint call-outs in Gunze Sangyo codes throughout the build, many of the cords are in white, the parachute and its lines yellow, and the drogue ‘chute in a light tan colour. Check your references for your particular example for fading or colour variance if you want to achieve maximum accuracy. Conclusion This is quite an unusual set that you’d think would be a niche product, but maybe its existence as a relatively simple method of creating a ‘chute-assisted landing scene will create the market and result in a lot more F-4s in landing dioramas going forward. Clearly the 1:48 set we reviewed some months back was a success, and maybe now we’re more likely to see a proliferation of these sets for other aircraft and scales. You could of course use this set with other branded Phantom kits, but you may have to do some work on the housing to make it work. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of

I’ve been a plastic modeller on and off for more than 50 years, but believe it or not this is the first Hasegawa kit I’ve ever made. I wanted to have a go at another iconic jet from my childhood and bought the “Showtime 500” version of the 1980s tooled ¼8 Hasegawa F-4J off ebay earlier this year. I had intended building it as Showtime 500, but when it arrived I was somewhat disappointed that some of the kit decals had been used and the remaining decals had very yellow carrier film. Especially disappointed as the kit had been described as new in the Ebay listing. I think it had also been in a chain smoker’s stash for some time because it also smelt like it had been in the smokehouse. I aired it a bit to get rid of the VOCs. However, the seller had included bagged-up, good quality and complete decal sheets for two USMC aircraft in 1976 Bi-Centennial US Independence markings and I did get a fairly good price. I decided there were probably too many Showtime 500 models out there anyway and did like the more colourful Bi-Centennial markings. It’s an old kit and I believe the first Hasegawa ¼8 Phantom to be tooled using engraved panel lining, which is very subtle. However, although the main aircraft parts have engraved detail, the drop tanks and pylons retain the raised detail of previous kits. I wanted to make this my main winter project and so ordered up some aftermarket additions to improve on the details missing in the kit. As I lack the patience and dexterity to paint realistic instrument panels I bought the Eduard colour PE set for the front and rear cockpits. Having decided that I would crew the jet I thought that Hasegawa’s aircrew figures looked OK and that the kit ejection seats would also be OK with a little bit of additional work to the tops of the seats. I also bought a set of weight on resin wheels and better detailed engine exhaust nozzles, some Reskit resin AIM 7Es and some Eduard Brassin resin AIM-9Js I agonised a bit over the kit’s lack of full length intake ducts and hunted the interweb for a suitable set of full length ducts. I eventually ordered a set of Alley Cat 1/48 full length resin intakes for the Hasegawa kit after first mistakenly buying a set of 1/72 3-D printed intakes from Reskit. The latter are very nice by the way if anyone would like a set. It then struck me that I had already spent more than I would have done if I’d bought the Tamiya F-4B kit, but who wants to do a shake and bake when you can do a classic cobble it all together from all directions type build?😁 For some random reason I started with the engine burner cans. The kit parts are smooth bore and somewhat lacking in detail, plus the burner rings aren’t that accurately depicted based on images seen on line of the real thing. So I tried to add a bit more interest, if not strictly accurate detail, by adding some internal fluting to the can liners and attempting to vary the colour of their interior and the burner rings to approximate those seen in the photos. I couldn’t replicate the many holes in the greenish can liners, but I figure once the nozzles are on you won’t see much of this anyway. This photo look awful by the way. I swear they look better by eye.😉 Then on to the cockpit tub. The Eduard Colour PE set looks OK, but you lose the 3D nature of the dials and switches. For the 1st time I used Ammo's aqueous acrylic Ultra Glue to attach the PE parts. It gives you much more time than CA glue does to adjust the positioning. I should probably have looked to see if Quinta do a 3D decal set for the F-4J, but I’ll definitely try 3-D decals in a future build of something. Most work on my part in both offices involved detailing the seat head box areas by adding the various straps missing from the kit parts. I used a mix of thin paper and masking tape strips to replicate these. The kit aircrew figures lean too far forward in the seats for my liking so I had to pare away plastic from their backs and also bend their legs a bit to get a more upright fit and make sure they didn’t foul the control panels. The seat harness attachments to the figures I created aren’t 100% accurate, but I managed to fudge approximations out of pre painted masking tape strips and I was quite pleased with the end result. They do at least look as if they are strapped into their seats. I also used 3 shades of green on the figures flight suits and this created some shading effects that added a bit more realism. There’s a far more detailed set of Phantom pilots in seats available from Aerobonus but I felt I’d already spent enough on this build. I was especially pleased to be able to get the pilot's hand holding the stick. It's the little things in life that satisfy me.🤣I know a modern outfit would include green tactical gloves, but I went for cloth white flying gloves to have a bit more colour variation. Not sure what they would have worn back in the mid 1970s? Moving on to painting the intake interiors and closing up the fuselage next.

Hi all, I've done a bit of preperation for an upcoming ZM F-4E project in 48th. I would like to do a F-4E from the 366th TFW with gun pods + napalm/rockeyes as a FastFAC bird, with the early style gun. Were the F-4s with the "Stormy" callsign differing airframes on each sortie? Put simply, would it be plausible for example, the pictured aircraft to be on a different day to this picture being taken, have 2x SUU-23s on the Outboard pylons and either napalm/rockeyes on the inboard wing pylons? I think yes, as I've seen a F-4E with no shark mouth alongside a F-4D, both with gun pods in a previous post thread, but I would like to make a more informed decision with your help. All information is welcome, detailing the post question, as well as any photos that showing a lot of wear on the aircraft. Would be great to hear from any stories from maintenance crews (if any roam this forum) because that would be amazing, especially to ask about the modelling focused topics of paint wear/resprays, how dirty the aircraft got, how many times they were washed etc.

Hello; advice sought by a moderately skilled modeller. I'd like to make a USAFE RF-4C as stationed at Alconbury in the mid- to late-1970s. Seeking to avoid drastic conversions, so am researching options for OOB product, in 1/72 scale only. My research suggests that Hasegawa, Italeri, ESCI and Fujimi have all produced one at various times. Does anyone have any tips/experience with these specific kits, concerning accuracy of moulding, ease of construction and/or availability? Thanks in advance.

Here I share some pictures of the Academy 1/48 F-4J Phantom, rendered as the first of the “Black Bunnies” flown by VX-4 (The Evaluators) in the 1970s. This plane (BuNo 153783) had the “squashed” bunny head on the tailplane, which was later substituted by the correctly shaped Playboy logo. This model was built out of the box, with the only additions being the decal set (from Furball Aerodesign), the LAU-10 pods for Zuni rockets (which were scratch built, using a felt pen as the main source), and some pipes and cables added to the undercarriage and wheel bays. The kit itself gave me very little trouble, with the parts fitting well and only requiring minimal use of filler. The panel lines and riveting were heavy, so some time was spent softening the surface detail. I am also aware that the Academy kit does not have the same level of detail as some of the more expensive alternatives, but this was sufficient for my enjoyment. Most of the time in this build was spend trying to get the painting "right" to my eyes. The first Black Bunny was a well kept bird, painted in very glossy black apart for the walkways and the antireflective area in front of the cockpit. Thus, the only concession to weathering was to highlight some of the panel and riveting lines, to suggest a bit of chipping along the edges. One of the corrections was to the colour of some of the instructional stencils. The Furball decals provide all stencils in white. In reality, many of the stencils were written in yellow letters, including all CAUTIONs (also, all WARNINGs were red). This was addressed by creating yellow and red filters using equal amounts of floor polish and Tamiya clear acrylics, and applying these on top of the words using a fine paintbrush. This worked well against the very dark background. I also felt that it was necessary to subdue a bit the contrast of the white stencils, to make them less obvious. Immediately after application, all those pure white decals against highly reflective black gave the model a toy-like appearance. I did this by dry brushing the black paint (I used Tamiya X-1 enamel) over the stencils. For a more complete build report, check here, or visit my web site (link in the signature panel).

My other build for this STGB...back to my youth being bought up in Lakenheath. My first model after many years (25 plus) was the Revell version of this - it was a bit rough, hand painted and I thought it was time to redo this - albeit the Monogram boxing...a different airframe with a slight change in colouring for the tan.... Old build in 2014.... I may well steal the crew and cannibalise the old one once its build!! Trying to source the SUU-21 Dispensers mentioned in this article...

I've finally finished this one after a brief hiatus of about a year while I moved flat and got my new work space set up. Possibly the most challenging kit I've built, and I had lots of fun trying to do the brass etch and resin justice. Some of it even made it to where it was supposed to be without pinging off the tweezers into the ether. I think it was worth it though, especially the details on the ejector seats. I messed up a couple of things. The angle of the main undercarriage is not right, because the Academy/Eduard kit has you assemble the bay walls from individual pieces and attach the main legs to these quite early in the build, so it's difficult to see how everything is supposed to line up. The decal for the "2293" ID number on the starboard side folded over itself and ended up looking a bit squashed, and I couldn't get the pin-wash for the panel lines to flow as well as I'd like - I think the varnish coat was a bit too thick for the engraved detail. Anyway, I imagine you'd like to see some pictures... Half of a build thread here:

My entry for this GB, the Italeri / Testors 1/48th scale RF-4C/E "Photo Phantom II" kit #810 which was first issued in 1981, a mere 40 years ago! I like building old kits and, with airbrushing, modern acrylic paints and after-market decals, it is satisfying to make something that is far better than I could have done all those years ago. I have almost finished an F-4S from the same stable and I hope I can learn from that build and apply it here. I was just curious how much work it would take to convert the early 80's vintage 1/48th scale Hasegawa U.S. Navy F-4J Phantom II to a U.S. Air Force F-4C using the contents of the spares box. The end result was this:- 20210620_171217 by Ghostbase, on Flickr Now an F-4 Phantom expert will immediately spot some omissions however I think I managed to factor in the main differences. Most of the donor parts came from an Academy F-4B kit which contains a lot of parts for different versions. I started by taking the Hasegawa slotted tailplane and sanding it down to eradicate the slots and that worked well. Keeping with the rear end I also replaced the longer jet pipes of the F-4J with a set of shorter pipes from the Academy kit. I had to cut the Hasegawa jet pipes and graft the Academy burner cans onto them, to my eye they protrude just a little bit too much. 20210620_171416 by Ghostbase, on Flickr Looking at the front of the Phantom I have removed the F-4J antenna from under the nose cone and have added the large IR sensor that applied to most F-4C and D models, again sourced from the Academy kit. From the same source, the nosewheel forward facing gear door. The sharp-eyed will spot that I forgot to remove the antenna from beneath the air intakes! 20210620_171233 by Ghostbase, on Flickr Although not visible in this photo I replaced the F-4J main wheels with those from the Academy kit. The weapons pylons also had to be replaced with the 'rounded' USAF types, I think I had these left over from an old Italeri or ESCI kit and they look a little bit skinny. The Hasegawa missile rails didn't quite fit to them and I would have to do this better next time. Also note that my masking for the gloss black nose cone was just slightly off! 20210620_171449 by Ghostbase, on Flickr In the cockpit I replaced the USN RIO's front panel with that from the Academy kit. That is one thing that I really like about the Hasegawa F-4 kits, the ejection seats look 'proper' chunky and they do fill the cockpit space nicely. 20210620_171509 by Ghostbase, on Flickr I have had a nightmare the last year with learning how to apply acrylic paints by airbrush. for this build I used paints from the Vallejo 'Air War Color Series' set 'USAF Colors "Gray Schemes" from 70's to Present' set and they went on really well; I got the mixing right, found the correct air pressure for my Harder and Steenbeck Ultra airbrush, used a retarder and I am really pleased with the result. 20210620_171353 by Ghostbase, on Flickr Finally, the decals which depict F-4C 64-0748 which was a Vietnam era Mig Killer, operated in 1989 by the Arkansas ANG 188th TFG / 184th TFS and wearing special artwork by Don Spering. The Hasegawa kit is very dated now but it still goes together well and I appreciate that. Modified Israeli F-4E. Fitted with a new nose for the HIAC-1 LOROP long-range camera with a 66-in (168 cm) focal length as well as a vertical KS-87 camera. These had a false radome painted on the nose to resemble conventional F-4Es. Pics thanks to Dov.

Hallo again This will be my F-4D, ZM kit in 1/48. As on my WIP from the C-version, I will continue with all improvement I noticed from the C-version. If anybody has pictures from this particular a/c, let me know. The weapon load I will use is not fixed yet. I think about an AGM-45 Shrike and AGM-65 Maverick. In addition, an ALQ-119 in station 4. Well, Happy modelling

Hi All, long time lurker and no poster but thought it's about time I started to get involved with this site as I have often read reviews and taken advice from the many excellent threads here. In time I hope I can give something back to help others but I'm looking for some advice on converting a Phantom II F-4F to an F-4E. I've been desperate to build a Vietnam era sea camo rhino in 1/72 but there appears to be a distinct lack of decent kits in this scale on the market at the moment. I eventually resulted in buying a Revell F-4F (Pharewell) after reading quite a bit about the fact that on the surface, they look very similar to an F-4E - perfect for my subject! I have also purchased some after-market decals and will be modelling F-4E 67-0210, 1972 58TFS, 432 TFW. This particular jet grabbed a mig kill with the gun... and it's got a sharks mouth adorning it which sold it So my questions are really around my research as I'm confident one of the many experts on here will be able to help. First off, I'm concerned about the main wings. I have omitted the little ridges (3 on the underside of each wing) as the pictures I can find of the jet in question don't have these; out of interest does anyone know what these are for (step 26)? I now have two options for the wing tips. I can opt for the ones without 'leading edges' or ones with. I can't find any further pictures which show what it should have and I'm not sure what to choose. Again, what are these used for? I assume improved control surfaces?
