  1. Nakajima B5N 'Kate' IJN Soryu December 1941 I've built a lot of WWII Japanese aircraft but nothing new for a l-o-n-g time. So when a good friend here in NZ (an American ex-pat) announced he was selling off some of his Hasegawa IJN/AF kits, I was first in the queue. Other than the seat harnesses from masking tape, what you see here is exactly what you get in the box, the aircraft was part of the first wave off Soryu on December 7th 1941. Yes the brown mottle was probably more dense on the actual machine and there is some question as to whether the undersides were unpainted (like this one), painted aluminium dope or grey, but I've used a little artistic license, because why not ? Build was virtually faultless like so many Hasegawa kits from the 1990's, mnimum amount of filler and sanding needed. Essential IMHO is the Eduard mask set - wouldn't like to guess how much time that saved me !. All the best from NZ, please feel free to ask any questions or make any comments. Ian.
  2. Hi all This is Tamiya's 1970s vintage A6M2 kit - very old and slightly quirky kit with a mix of raised and recessed panel lines, but I thought I'd give it a go as I'm planning to build one of Eduard's new Zeros (the one everyone seems to be raving about online) in the near future. The Tamiya kit might be old, but it goes together well enough. Cockpit detail is not comparable to modern kits, but most of it can't be seen under the closed canopy anyway, so I'd say the detail level is about right. In case anyone's interested - for the fuselage colour, I went for a 60/40 mix of Vallejo Tan Green/Hemp and Medium Sea Grey, except for the control surfaces, which I mixed at 50/50. For the cowling colour, I used Hataka's VVS colour AMT-6 'Night Black', which has a fair bit of dark blue in it. Markings mostly via either Montex, or homemade masks. Stencils and tail markings are out OOB. Minimal weathering, as I believe these aircraft were kept pristine and polished before the attack was launched. Finished in the colours of PO1 Tadao Kimura, who flew as part of the second wave attack at Pearl Harbour. Kimura was one of only a small number of Pearl Harbour veterans to survive the war. Anyway, hope you like the pics..
  3. Hi, Concerning those P-40's defending Pearl Harbour I wonder if the edge between the green and the grey was hard edged or soft edged? https://www.victorymodels.com/products/wolfpack-1-48-decal-p-40-warhawk-part-1-pearl-harbor-defenders-at-dec-7-1941 Cheers / André
  4. My dear modeller friends, a lot of time passed before I could finish this work. But I've just finished!! It was my intention to finish the diorama for the anniversary of the Pearl Harbour attack, but personal problem took me out of my intentions. Anyway, let me present you my last work, my first 1/700 model and, last but not least, my first maritime diorama. I never tried to work on a so little model, as I was afraid for the very little pieces and difficulty on working with them, but after seeing a lot of your works, I tried. I bought the 1/700 Dragon USS Arizona winning an auction on the "bay", then during one of my trip, I found on sale the 1/700 Flyhawk USS Ward and the idea of a diorama come up. My intention was to replicate the day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, when the battleship USS Arizona was lying down on the harbour mooring quays, and USS Ward destroyer was starting her duty on patrolling the bay. The USS Ward was the first US Navy unit to fire to a Japanese unit that was trying to enter on Pearl Harbour for a torpedo attack The 7th December 1941, during her patrolling duty she discovered a Japanese mini submarine, she attacked firing and sinking it, she also gave the alarm to the US command but her Captain's alarm was ignored. Then the disaster arrived! On reality the USS Arizona was sided with a working ship, the USS Vestal on her renoval duty, but I couldn't find any model of this scale, and so I decided to replicate a "near reality" diorama! Anyway this is my interpretation and realization.... 5. This is not my latest build. But I didn't show it here before. Hope you like it.
  6. Ready for your inspection I have Airfix's Nakajima B5N2 'kate.' The aircraft is painted in the colours of one from the Imperial Japanese Navy carrier 'Shokaku," which was involved in the attack on Pearl Harbour. I also opted for the folded wing version, partly because I wanted to experiment with cutting the plastic, and partly because I think they look rather mean with wings folded. The build went well until the painting stage, I always brush paint, and tried experimenting with thinners to enhance my painting techniques. I have since learnt that I achieve better results using distilled water to thin my paint. That said, this model making lark is a constant learning curve and I'm pleased with the final results I have achieved.
  7. For my next build I have decided to attempt the Airfix Nakajima B5N2 'kate.' As one of Airfix's new tools, the sprues are all very clean, and there is lots of detailing to the cockpit and fuselage, because of this she will be an out of the box build. I love the look of this aircraft with its wings folded in, and am toying with which paint scheme to choose. I am looking forward to using my modelling saw for the first time, and developing new techniques.
