  1. The 1989 Coup d'Étát in Paraguay Latin America at War #11 ISBN : 9781911628699 Helion & Company via Casemate UK Like many countries in Central America the Republic of Paraguay has seen its fair share of conflict. However 1989 was a critical year for Paraguay, it was in this year that the 35 years of Dictatorship from General Alfredo Stroessner was finally overthrown in what was a violent coup d'état. Prior to 1954 the country had a procession of unstable governments following the Civil War of 1947. After this General Stroessner began a series of events which would lead to his coup d'état in 1954. Now while there were some economic benefits to the country the people also suffered environmental and human rights abuses under this regime. They were an active participant in "Operation Condor" the US backed campaign of Political repression and state terror which took place over Central & South America. In the mid to late 1980's efforts to block the opposition were having lesser effects, and combined with Stroessner's failing health lead and political infighting in his own Colorado party led to a coup from General Andrés Rodríguez. The Army tried to arrest Stroessner however his 700 strong guard fought back. Following the deployment of Tanks on the street, and shelling of his HQ by Army Artillery and Naval vessels they eventually surrendered. The official death toll of 31 was deemed far below the over 200 which it actually was. Stroessner would leave for political exile to Brazil where he died in 2006. General Andrés Rodríguez became President and brought sweeping reforms to the country, as well as elections. He would serve as an elected President till 1993 and became the first leader in a long time to leave the office at the end of his term. The book looks at the forces on both sides of the conflict, some history of the region and how the main battles were fought. This volume is A4 soft back in format and 80 pages. There are black and white photographs throughout with 2 main colour maps, and 6 pages of colour profiles. Conclusion This book should provide readers with a more complete understanding of this important part of Paraguay's history. Recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  2. Aerial Operations in Paraguay In the revolutions of 1922 and 1947 - Latin America @ War No.8 ISBN : 9781912390588 Helion & Company via Casemate UK Paraguay like a lot of countries in the region went through long periods of unsettlement with civil wars and foreign war. This publication looks at the use of fledgling air power in the 1922 Civil war, and then more established aircraft in the 1947 civil war. The 1922-23 conflict took place following cancellation of presidential elections in 1922. From the aftermath of the 1904 Revolution there had been a great deal of infighting and instability in the country. The cancellation of elections in 1922 lead to a civil ware breaking out. Both side hired ex WWI combat veterans for their air arms who were in effect mercenaries. Other pilots were Paraguayan nationals who had also fought in WWI. The government air arm used a variety of aircraft but the Revolutionaries used only Italian Ansaldo SVA.5 & SAV.10 aircraft. Following the Chaco war of 1932 to 1935 (covered here in Latin America @ War No.5) there was a coup by the Army. They then set about strengthening their air operations with an order of 60 aircraft from Italy. This $2.2 Million deal was a fortune at the time, even more so for a war ravaged country. Thus after the Government was returned to power by another coup they tried to cancel the order. In the end the Italians persuaded Paraguay to take 20 aircraft. Later on the Government would take deliveries of further Aircraft from the US which were supplied under lease / lend of WWII. All of these aircraft would then be used in the civil war of 1947 which followed the suspension of the constitution and a general strike, and student riots. By the time this civil ware ended in August 1947 a full third of the population had fled the country. Conclusion This book should give the reader and overview of the civil wars in the country and a look at the aircraft used. It looks at the relationship with Italy and the US under lend / lease. The book is a modest 40 pages containing black & white photos throughout. There are 7 pages of colour aircraft profiles and 2 of colour maps. Recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  3. A little background: The Gran Chaco War (or sometimes just "Chaco War") was a war fought between Bolivia and Paraguay over a region of scrubland, swamp, and semi-desert called the Gran Chaco. The land was of little use or interest until oil was discovered near it, in the foothills of the Andes. This led Bolivia to believe that oil was also in the Gran Chaco and they asserted their claim to this land, which had belonged to the department of Bolivia when most of South America was owned by Spain. The region had, however, long been inhabited and used by the Paraguayans, who had de facto, if not actual de jure control of the land. To make a long story short, the Paraguayans had better leaders, and were used to the hot climate and landscape of the Gran Chaco, and they won a decisive victory over the superior in numbers Bolivians. In a treaty signed in 1938 (fighting had ceased in 1935), most of the Gran Chaco was legally assigned to Paraguay. So much for my history lesson; now onto my little kit. This kit is the old Aeroclub kit which represents a Fiat Cr.20, of which Paraguay obtained a few (five, I believe) in the 1930's from the Italians, who also provided other aircraft and military assistance at this time. The kit itself is moulded in Aeroclub's typical brownish plastic, with a considerable amount of white metal parts. Best of all, this kit actually has the Paraguayan decals and they look quite usable (we shall see!). The white metal parts need some cleaning up, but I've already cleaned up the plastic parts. Below are some photographs: Enjoy the build (I hope I do!). Best Regards, Jason
