  1. Hey Guys, you know what this GB needs ? A bronze painted Mustang with go faster stripes and a prop painted the colours of the rainbow. Lucky for y'all, I got here just in time fill this gaping void. So here's the obligatory sprue shot: And some naff Red Pegasus ALPS decals that might work (+ some very dark looking Mr Paint bronze). When its done , at least Ol' Yeller will have a buddy, its lonely on his shelf... Its a light conversion compared to the BF109V14 I'm just about to finish: Removal of guns & radio, clipped concave wing tips & elevators, a funky new aerial and finally an uncuffed prop from the dozen or so F-51s I picked up at Home Bargains a few years back in 2016 I did the same kit as Bob Hoovers ( now solitary) Cavalier Reno start plane and remember it had no vices apart from the annoying canopy with a separate frame which drove me nuts as I had to remove the brace and the clear bit wouldn't line up. Still it should be hoot and something you don't see every day! Cheers Anil
  2. Edit: After completing this, I've continued building more Mustangs - rather than spamming the forum with several threads, I just keep using this. Another "return to the hobby thread". First some manners by presenting myself, since this is my first post in this forum. I'm from Sweden, stopped modelling when I became a teenager - now I am middle-aged (<-first admittance of said fact) and have a 5-year old son to whom I recently bought a model. We built it together and I think I enjoyed it even more than he did. He was hooked though, so I bought him another, one of the new Airfix Mustangs. But this time he didn't let me help him! Not a bit! My fingers were itching, so I bought one more for dad, which will be the subject of this thread The kit is the new P-51D from Airfix (box art below). It depicts a P51D-10-NA with serial number 44-14207, as flown by Lt Eugene James of 352nd FG, 328th FS. Code PE-E, nickname Rose Marie (James's girl?) AND Kelly Kid 2 on the opposite side (apparently some relative of the crew chief). Several images are available here: http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/gallery.php?Group=352 It's completely different hobby now, thanks to the advent of the internet and modern machining. So much information... almost overload. Last time I built a model I had access to exactly two books with colour profiles in the library. Decided to write this log in the hope I could get some feedback and to have a log to get back to - if not for anything else than as a reminder on what not to do I aim for historical accuracy, as I see models as little windows to the past, so any correction or criticism is appreciated. I've started already, assembled cockpit and fuselage. I built Airfix's blue-nosed mustang sometime in the 80s or 90s, but that was something different. The level of detail and fit of the pieces in this upgraded kit is fantastic. Anyhow I added some bits and pieces. Fuselage assembled - no gaps at all. Leaving the propeller until later probably makes for easier build and painting, but I feel something is amiss if it doesn't spin.
  3. Concerning the IDF-lights on starbord wing I noticed that those lights often interfere with the stars and bars on the same place according to instructions. What would be correct? /André
  4. Hello fellow BM's. Here she is, my latest attempt at the hobby we all cannot get enough of! May I present one North American P-51D Mustang, by Airfix and in 1/72 scale. Flown by Lt. Eugene W James. 328th Fighter Squadron. I enjoyed the plastic on this one, but I was plagued by the demons of painting NMF, whom kept me on my toes throughout the entire process. She's built out of the box with some scratch built cockpit detail around the radio equipment and wine bottle foil used for harnesses. For paint, I reached for the trusty Tamiya and my stash of AK Extreme Metals. I managed to drop her after completing most of the painting and decals which cracked the fuselage down the joins and required careful filling, sandfing, masking and repainting! Nightmare. I also managed to drop some green top Tamiya glue just aft of the radiator vent whilst securing the exhaust scoop... more repairs!! Anyway, painting process; Undercoated with Humbrol rattle can primer and buffed to as smooth a finished as I could get AK black base, then coated with AK polished aluminium Tamiya XF-16 for the wings in an attempt to replicate the painting of the real thing Tamiya XF-4 for the blue and XF-7 for the red Sealed using AK Gauzy Agent Weathered using a mixture of oils and chalk dust Hope you enjoy and critique welcome as per usual. Cheers, JB
  5. All done. I really enjoyed the build Full details and more pic's at my blog but here's some images
  6. For part of our display at Telford 2018, my IPMS Branch went mad and bought a bunch of the new Airfix Mustangs. I said I'd build one or two and this is the result. Like all of the new Airfix kits I've built the fit is tight but by making sure the mating surfaces are clean and a bit of dry fitting it went together really well and needed hardly any filler. I used the Kits World decals for a 334th Fighter Squadron machine and they and the Airfix decals performed faultlessly. I thoroughly enjoyed the build and am already planning my next one.
  7. I hope someone here can help me with this. I am sure that at one time, someone (Leading Edge, Arrow Graphics, ???) offered a 1/72 decal sheet of Post War - 1950s black code letters. I have a few sheets of numbers, but can not locate a corresponding sheet of letters. Does anyone know who or if such a decal sheet ever existed? and, if so, who made? Thanks!

  17. Hi all, over the last few months I've built the Airfix P-51D and the Revell B-17G in 1/72. These are the first models I've made since I was at school and feel like I've learned some new things along the way both through my own experimentation and from what I've seen on here. I've used airbrushed Tamiya and Alclad paints, an Alclad varnish and thinned oil paints as a wash and for exhaust stains. I'm pretty happy with the results though feel like I could have done a better job with the "basics" on both models, i.e. filling, sanding, the cockpits, etc - I completely stuffed up the B-17 transparencies with a last of coat of varnish after I'd unmasked everything (won't do that again)... I really enjoyed doing the interior on the B-17 and added some more detail like cables, a desk lamp, map, fire extinguishers, oxygen tanks, etc. In the end I couldn't bear to shut her up so have used little neodynium magnets to allow the fuselage to split and go back together, you can see one above the bomb bay. Finally, I also have no idea how to take photos either with my phone or my fiance's camera (which I took these with) - it'd be great if someone could point me in the direction of some tips on taking better snaps. Next up is an Airfix 1/72 Spitfire which is where I started with my dad when I was about 6! Thanks for looking!

  19. Hi all , this is Airfix's Mustang, another great little kit from them. I used Eagle Cal's P-51D decal sheet, and chose the Thunderbird option. When I was doing a bit of extra tidying I managed to take half the logo off the nose with masking tape, bringing the build to an abrupt premature end...so these are the pics I took just before that point, warts and all. (if anyone has the Eagle Cal sheet with the unused T-bird logo I'd be happy to buy/swap btw...) C&C always welcome, thanks for looking in. All the best, Dave.
  20. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a set of Contact-Resine 1/24th scale P-51D Mustang exhaust stubs as their website no longer exists? Many thanks in advance! Steve
  21. RFI virgin signing in .... So here is my 1st model kit in 35+ years, a kit of many 1st's including - using an airbrush, acrylic paints , gloss coating between 'layers', weathering , home made decals. I chose the Airfix P-51D as my re introduction since it is a quite easy kit to build and it is NMF - the Airfix B-17G is my current stash, I thought a some practise with metal colors was needed, following a little research I also decided that I would build these with a theme - WW2 US 8th / 9th Airforce Essex based squadrons ( Theme topic I started beginning of the April ) Kit: Airfix P-51D Mustang Scale: 1/72nd Main Colour Paints: Vallejo Gloss Black Primer , Vallejo Metal Color Aluminium , Dark Aluminum, Dull Aluminum, Tamiya XF-62 Olive Drab, XF-3 Yellow, XF-5 Green. Finish: Vallejo Satin Varnish Build : OOB Changes: Homemade decals Following my theme and as a challenge I chose the 55th Fighter Group who arrived at RAF Wormingford early April 1944 with P-38 Lightnings converting to P-51D Mustangs in July 1944. The Fighting 55th were identifiable by their green-yellow-green spinners and green and yellow checkerboard behind the prop. Since I was going to keep this model OOB ... I was going to hand paint this!! Subject : 343rd Fighter Squadron P-51D 44-14312 CY-N "Sonny Boy" (This plane was re-designated CY - T a few weeks later) Pilot: Lt. Ted E Hoffman Enough waffle time for the truth !!
  22. Hello, Just wonder concerning Airfix RAF Mustang IV (A55107)... ...does this kit have the correct propeller? What I knew it´s not correct but just want to be sure... What I am aiming with is to build that Mustang IV that made an hardlanding att Getterön, Sweden 1945... http://www.forcedlandingcollection.se/RAF/RAF105-KH695.html https://books.google.se/books?id=wLjWCgAAQBAJ&pg=PA11&lpg=PA11&dq=Getterön+Mustang&source=bl&ots=WHmbIODNDI&sig=LSvEc8Lxrcsu4-2fDIwQzXPPyE0&hl=sv&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj0oYPT2fjRAhXDApoKHT2mBbsQ6AEIITAB#v=onepage&q=Getterön Mustang&f=false What's still missing concerning this nice kit is the uncuffed props, the landing light (comes with both Italeri and Tamiya kits), the second type of exhausts (those coming with the Tamiya kit fits the Airfix kit as well with not so much work) and photo/camera housing for the Swedish S 26 Mustang. Whit these parts a lot more variants could easilly been made. http://www.flygmuseetf21.se/mustang.htm I really like the way Heller did with their P-51D making it possible to build an early P-51D. Sad that Airfix didn't use this possibility as well. But still it's the best kit. By the way, was the wheelhouse on the Mustang Mk IV's painted or.., ? And if painted, what colour was it painted in? Cheers / André
  23. Hey guys, this is jut a small a update to my build for the last P-51D group build. I did not get it done in time, so I will continue here. This is the initial post: Hasegawa P-51D "Mustang" 1/48 group build Time for modelling is unfortunately limited, sorry for not getting it managed to make some in press pictures. The build is complete and I had to think about the paint theme. I decided to go with a very attractive blue nose, called "Nancy-Lee". Source: www.americanairmuseum.com Once again Life Like Decals provides everything we need. the decals are tricky to use. Once applied, the look is good, but I wouldn´t recommend them. the paint job was done with Revell Aqua Color, Silver and "lufthansa blue". I have used Tamiya tape for masking the nose and I am pretty happy how she came out. I tried to give some panels a different shade of silver with Oil filtering. It is not easy to make some good pictures to show this effect. The wheels provided by Hasegawa look really great, first stage of painting. Please visit my Blog for more builds. Pete´s mancave Thanks for looking Pete
  24. Hello, I'll go with a Tamiya 1/72 P-51D, not sure yet between the 352nd or 357th, but fully OOB. Time permitting I could try to continue with my other P-51D, the airfix kit also in 1/72, as it was suggested by fellow members. Looking forward to see how all this develops being this my first group build, but so far looks really interesting! Pictures coming soon! J
  25. So here's my main build for this group build. Thankfully a perfectly timed classified in the for sale forum and some brilliantly prompt postage I got my hands on one of tamiya's masterpieces. Here's the box shot. And the extras for this one. To make this one a little more interesting and because tamiya's stock decals are thicker than a thick thing I've gone for a set of superscale decals, my subject for this build will be Pilot Lt. James G. Bartley's P-51D from 1944, otherwise known as 'Little Midget'. Here's a shot of the real thing showing the right hand side which carried the name 'Missy'. source I've never used superscale decals before but from close inspection the quality and clarity looks really good, can't wait to try these out! Here are some shots of the beautiful level of detail in the original plastic, and having built 2 of these already they go together effortlessly so this one is really going to be about the markings and overall finish. Studying images of other P-51s I'm going to endeavor to replicate the finish of a clean but well used metal finish. Not too sure which way to go with it but I'm currently thinking of using aclad II airframe aluminium over a mottled black finish. I love nmfs and enjoy working with alclad so I'm looking forward to experimenting with it. And, there is of course the big chequer board decals to play with too! Cheers Dan
