  1. Hello All, It's been a long time - Sweet's 1/144 P-51B/C modified to a RAF recon Mustang. Thanks for looking. Ian
  2. A model I´ve been wanting to build for quite some time, Yeager´s last Mustang. This was my second Mustang, but my first one painted in an overall natural metal finish. It´s the Italeri rebox of the Hasegawa 1:48 P-51D. The model was first coated with white, and then the metallic colour was brushpainted over it, so it could have a nice grip on the surface. Many thanks to @stevehnz, @Giorgio N and Scott van Aken from Modeling Madness for their help regarding the Repliscale decals. They were an absolute joy to work with, being thin but not fragile, and sticking permanently once I pressed firmly over them with a kitchen roll. The only exception were the checkerboards, which were too big and had to be painted. I also had to add a spreader sprue just in front of the cockpit, otherwise there would be a gap between the wings and the fuselage.
  3. Hi all. Here is one of three Mustangs I have been working on in this WIP thread. Cheers Jimmy

  6. Hi all. Here is one of the Mustangs I have been working on in this WIP thread. Cheers Jimmy
  7. Hello everyone. Here's my Academy P-51-2NA (F-6A) Mustang in 1:72 which I built back in 2007. It represents 41-37322 "Mah Sweet Eva Lee", flown by Lt N F Bush, 154th OS, 68th OG, USAAF, North Africa, Spring 1943. Photo-reconnaisssance fighter variant of the Mustang. It was completely painted by brush with only the matt varnish being airbrushed. Before finishing the kit I damaged the radio wire and had to fix it that is why it's a bit slack. Thanks for looking and all comments are welcome. Miguel
  8. Bud Anderson is part of that rare breed of fighter pilots who first saw combat in piston engines fighters in World War Two and whose last combat mission was over the skies of North Vietnam. He claimed 16 and a half aerial victories (no strafing victories in there) making him a Triple Ace. There will probably never again be another pilot to equal this. Anderson flew with the 357th from Leiston and was its top scoring ace. He has remained lifelong friends with Chuck Yeager who also served in the 357th and once said of Anderson ‘he’s the best fighter pilot I ever saw’. Anderson named all his aircraft 'Old Crow' after a brand of Kentucky Bourbon. I imagine there was a good backstory and probably a wild party behind that, though Anderson claimed to be teetotal...! Anderson’s first aircraft was not his recognisable Old Crow Mustangs but a P-39Q Aircobra while on a training squadron in New Mexico. Although the aircraft was much maligned by US pilots, Anderson liked the nimble little Aircobra: “Actually I enjoyed the ’39—it was fast and looked good. I just wouldn’t want to take it into combat.” This is the F-Toys P-39Q which I repainted. I replaced the pitot with something less cannon-like, but otherwise OOB. Different sources give different views on whether this had a red tail or not. I went for a red tail, because it was more fun (and the squadron aircraft were repainted with red tails for war game exercises, though there is nothing suggesting this was done on Bud Anderson's P-39). A good, clean build with few fit issues. I had to strip off the canopy pre-painting which was tricky (and it's still a little too thick but I can't do anything further on that). The Revell MicroWings P-39 is a useless old mould, replete with acres of flash. But it does come with some nice decals for Anderson's P-39, which I could repurpose for this build. No issues with these - they worked well. In March 1943 Anderson was posted to the 363rd FS of the 357th FG, flying the Merlin-powered P-51B. The 357th was the second P-51 Fighter Group formed (after the 354th 'Pioneer' Group that Sweet caters for in this scale), but the first assigned to the 8th Air Force on long-range bomber escort duty. On 27 May 1944 Anderson (who by now had scored several kills) was caught in a dogfight with a veteran Luftwaffe 109 pilot. In a series of 'boom and zoom' vertical maneuvers, which pushed the aircraft to the very limits of what they were capable of, Anderson managed to get some shots into the 109 which crashed. Subsequently some historians have offered to try to identify the Luftwaffe pilot (who was obviously very experienced). Bud Anderson's response was typically modest and quite moving: he didn't want to know, there was no prestige in it; the German 'was just some guy trying to kill me, that's all.' In his second tour in late-1944, Anderson flew the P-51D, which I've made here. This was initially olive drab, but returning from one mission over the frozen wastes of northern Germany, Anderson remarked offhand to his crew chief that he felt conspicous flying a dark-colored P-51 against the white landscape. To his great surprise next morning his Olive Drab/Neutral Grey aircraft was gleaming polished aluminium. “Otto Heino, Mel Schuenemann, and Leon Zimmermann had stayed up the whole night through, hand-rubbing the paint off with rags soaked in gasoline. In the process, they had rubbed most of the skin off their hands. No one asked them to do that. No one expected it." I've modeled Anderson's P-51 after perhaps a couple of missions. I've left things quite clean and polished, bar some mud and exhaust staining (it was a cold, wet winter after all). This is obviously the Platz P-51. The Platz 'Aces of the 8th Air Force' box offers decals for this version of Old Crow and the olive drab version too (Cartograf and very nice) but I went for a mixture of those and MYK decals' offering. The MYK decals are superb at conforming to complex curves and were better for things like invasion and ID stripes, but some of the Cartograf decals were a bit sharper in terms of details - like the kill markings. I love the whitewall tyres - so cool and come as decals which makes life easier... Overall AK Interactive Aluminium, but I varied some of the panel colours with a variety of other shades. A fun build - I can't get enough of these Platz P-51s (which is fortunate as several boxes of the new issue just landed on my doorstep!). I suspect I will try and build several other of Bud Anderson's mounts, including his F-105. What an amazing man. Thanks very much for looking - as ever! Angus
  9. I'm a bit on a Mustang spree at the moment, so here are some images of another recently finished Academy build in 1:72; 'Salem Representative' flown by Flying Officer Ralph "Kidd" Hofer. I used an Eduard Zoom set for the cockpit, while the decals came from Kitsworld. I dropped the flaps on this one as well, as it adds a lot of character to the model IMHO. The rest was build pretty much as per the instructions. Next up will be a P-51 'Red Tail', inspired by the film on the Tuskegee Airmen. I hope you like it! Peter
  10. Dear all, Please find below some images of another recent build. It's the 1:72 Academy P-51C Mustang build as a Mustang Mk.III of the RAAF, as operated from Fano, Italy, on the Adriatic coast in 1944. I used an Eduard Zoom set for the cockpit and dropped the flaps, while the guns were replaced with brass tubes and the kit's bombs with some Eduard Brassin items. The camouflage was sprayed on using a masking set from Kora Models. The decals are from On Target decals for Commonwealth Mustangs as I liked the Southern Cross image on the tail. It's a great little sheet, but it has unfortunately a few errors when it comes to instructions. The Mustangs from 3 Sqn RAAF didn't have a medium blue spinner but a red one (like all allied fighter aircraft in Italy) and didn't have the white identification bands on the wings and tail. They didn't have the yellow markings on the wings either, but I only found that out after I finished painting the whole lot, so I left that as it was. I hope you like it! Peter PS: looking at the images I realize I need to add a bit more grime to the wheels... These Mustangs were kept well but worked hard.
  11. Were the RAF Mustang IV's fitted with Sutton harnesses or did they retain the USAAF belts? I've had a search and can't find anything about it yet. Also Eduard do Beige coloured belts and Dark Green belts, which colour belts are for which aircraft? thanks Mike
  12. North American P-51D-5 Instrument panel Eduard LOOK 1:32 Not long ago Eduard introduced a new concept in modelling accessories the LOOK range. Each set contains a completely finished instrument panel, which includes all the instruments, levers and instrument glass on a pre-painted panel, this goes for the lower central panel and the switch panel beneath that. This set is designed for the Revell P-51 and is for the D-5 version, the earlier D version is also available. The quality is excellent and is a direct replacement of the kit part. The set also comes with etched steel seatbelts which are also pre-painted and when folded really look the part with the separate clasps and fixings.. Conclusion This new series is a great resource for those of us who are unable to replicate all the markings on a panel in one easy solution. My only concern is if a model was to be put into a competition without the modeller declaring they have used a LOOK set, as, to me, it’s a form of cheating. Review sample courtesy of

  14. Hi, This model was finished last year but I haven't taken the time to share the pictures with you. The Airfix kit is a wonder to build. The only comment I may have is for the canopy: I don't really like the way Airfix proposes it on two parts (transparency + base). I also encountered some issue with the paint. I applied Alclad 2 paints on a Tamiya gray primer and had the unpleasant surprise to see the paint cracking. Twice... 🤬. Third try was with Tamiya Flat Black. No issue then. If anybody has had the same experience, your comments will be welcome. Decals are from Microscale. Seatbelts from Eduards. Gunsight from Quickboost. Hope you like it. Cheers, Antoine
  15. I don't usually share work I do for others but I'm kinda proud of this one. I had to beat the RS kit into submission with a good amount of elbow grease and super glue. Decals were very nice though.
  16. Watching the work in progress by Olivier de St Raph on the Missouri Aramada, I was compelled to start working on the Blue nosed P51-D from Airfix. The high quality work and information in that thread kept my enthusiasm going long enough to actually finish the kit. Starting with the interior; Left and right drop tanks don't make sense, so the right gas cap was filled and re-scribe d on the left. The panel lines on the wing were filled and the wheel wells painted. First time using a rivet tool also the elevator counter-balance was etched. Charlie in the foreground as Isis sees all. Enough you say? On with the show. Vallejo White Aluminum for the body and Dull Aluminum for the wings. Unfortunately the Testors flat clear lacquer reacted with the floor polish used for the transfers causing fine cracks and an instant war-weary look. Rivets on the flaps are an absolute must. Thanks for looking. Garry c
  17. Hi, this is my recent build, Airfix 1/72 P-51D Mustang, painted with Alclad II Polished Aluminum and weathered with Tamiya's weather sets. Decals from Blue Diamond Decals. Thank you for looking.
  18. Hi, all. I'm working on a Tamiya Mustang in 1/72, another RNZAF/TAF example. On my last build of the Airfix kit I dropped the flaps, the landing gear doors, and the radiator flap. The Tamiya kit is moulded with the flaps up and they can't be dropped without surgery. I'm wondering what to do with the gear doors. Tamiya tell you to model the aircraft with the gear doors down and the radiator flap open. Most images of the P-51 online show the aircraft with the gear doors down, radiator flap open, and the flaps down. I've come across a few images of the Mustangs with the flaps up and the gear doors up. E.g.: There's a lot of variation out there and I was wondering if Britmodeller could be my source of truth. Is there a normal gear door arrangement for a Mustang with its flaps up? Does Tamiya have their instructions wrong by suggesting gear doors down, but flaps raised?
  19. Hello! This is a realy early of my airbrushed kits, it was made back in 2007. Next to it, You can see an even more older one which was used for tests in the meanwhile. The first time when I used resin upgrade and mark softer. Mr. Pilot from Airfix RAF personel.
  20. Hello all i built this as an attempt to get used to 1/72nd scale i am placing it here as it is about 90% complete. I replaced the barrels with hollow micro brass tubing. Which is itself a test of patience. The Star & Bars are kit decals the serial is kit decal. But the codes are from Woodland Scenics Railroad lettering. I think they work very well. However i've been laughed at by some here at Britmodeller for suggesting these. I'll let you decide whether they look good ? Correct ? Or Bad ? It still needs resin exhausts and some weathering. It is also the first model in a pet project that will eventually incorporate 10 more P-51's, 4 P-47's, and 1 P-38 an airfield diorama with a tower and the associated ground equipment. The full size diorama will be built last. Any how heres the Mustang as it sits today. It represents a D model of the 4th Fighter Group. And i hope you like it. Oh and for those of you curious the invasion stripes were handpainted the Aluminum was Tamiya Rattlecan and the Red & Blue are Vallejo. The Red is standard Vallejo & the Blue MA Mediterranean blue and is Airbrushed. The color was pretty close to the colors i could find online. I hope every one likes this. The eagle eyed among you may spot my glaring goof up on this plane.
  21. Hi All, I have just completed an Academy 1/72 scale P-51D, I have only just started making models so this is one of my first serious attempts so had help from my dad and enjoyed making it, I wanted to make it 'Old Crow' as I'm an aviation graphics artist and managed to get a couple of my pieces signed by Bud Anderson himself, so this will go along side them in my room. Comments and criticism welcome always looking to improve I have got another Academy P-51B which I will make into Berlin Express and also an Airfix 1/72 scale P-51D which I'm looking at making into 'Tall in the Saddle'. 1/72 'Old Crow' P-51D Mustang 357th FG by Ryan Dorling ( Ryan Dorling Photography, Reheat Ph, on Flickr 1/72 'Old Crow' P-51D Mustang 357th FG by Ryan Dorling ( Ryan Dorling Photography, Reheat Ph, on Flickr 1/72 'Old Crow' P-51D Mustang 357th FG by Ryan Dorling ( Ryan Dorling Photography, Reheat Ph, on Flickr Kind Regards Ryan

  25. Hello everybody, here is my try at Hasegawa P-51C. Built almost OOB, with addition of Quickboost exhausts. Painted with Gunze Aluminium and Red, wash is Tamiya, and exhaust stains and dirt a combination of Tamiya smoke and Tamiya D weathering set. Decals are combination of Revell (national insignia, yellow bands and stencils) and Tally Ho. Tally Ho decals acted terribly, resisting every attempt to get them from backing paper. Thanks for looking!
