  1. My first plane model in 40 years (usually it's tanks), I was inspired by the description in AK Real Colours for Night being a mix of a blue and black. Went for the Tamiya P-47M 1/48 - it's from 2005 (61096) - excellent model, any fault with the construction was mine and not due to the model! As I paint with rattle cans I got a custom filled rattle can and settled on RAL 5004 ie a very, very dark blue. I did try it out on various undercoats as testers and found it was too blue, when used on black undercoat. So finally went for a pale grey, as the final colour looked more black The weathering and inspiration for the model came from AK 56th fighter group in WW2 - the colour and weathering for the drop tanks, undercarriage doors, wheels, I lifted straight from the cover. Overall learnt an awful lot that I will carry over to my next plane, as I have the aviation bug now, including: - Pencils are harder to use than oils and scratch the base paint (I used only pencils on this) and the colour changes to a whiter look with the clear coat - The decals in the 56th FG book were awful and totally the wrong colour( great book, terrible decals), the decals in the box were (old?) difficult to get to sit on the model, even with a gloss layer for them to sit on, so I will go with spraying markings next time (as I do on tanks) -I'm sure most of you know this already, I didn't but the the Tamiya model was a masterclass in what a model should be for the way it all fitted together - I will actually be drawn to Tamiya planes first after this I have started a Loire 130 and looking to see what other aircraft I will do next.
  2. Howdy! My first completion of the New Year is Revell's 1/72 P-47M Thunderbolt. A very enjoyable build OOTB and as is my want brush painted. The main camo is my own mixture of approximate colours as suggested by the instructions. The aircraft represents A 63rd Fighter Squadron Jug from the 56th FG US 8th Army Airforce Boxted England 1945. I have added the rockets and fuel tanks as per the instructions but am unsure if this particular aircraft ever carried them! But they look good to me and i like my Tbolts tooled up, so to speak. Thanks for looking ATB Greg
  3. Dear all, Greetings from Italy. Finally, after two years of forced stop I'm back to modelling. A new start in a new home, with much more space to build and show my airplanes (with wife blessing of course). This kit is the very nice Tamiya P-47 M, 63rd FS, 65th FG, 8th AF, England 1945 built practically OOB just with some little extra scratchbuilt details on the engine and in the cockpit. To paint it I used Tamya primer, Tamiya acrylics (with airbrush) and Tamiya spray finishing just with a slight homemade oil wash for weathering. Not 100% perfect but I would say a decent re-start. Enjoy pictures and please feel free to comment. Any suggestion to improve is more than welcome. Cheers, Andy
  4. Hello! This is my first finished project this year, the very well known and praised Tamiya P-47 1/48 kit. Nothing to add, really, a superb kit. Only some small stencils did not behave well and…disintegrated. C’est la vie! Since these especific birds didn’t operate for too long, war ending in Europe was months away, I kept the weathering at a minimum, just some dirt from the airfields, but not too many scratches and chipping… Canopy masks from Eduard, guns from Model Masters and seat belts from scratch. Hope you enjoy! Cheers
  5. I don't like that plane - too big and bulky for my taste, but I've noticed that huge white-red checkerboard painted on engine cover and did a little bit of research. Looks like pilot might be my very distant family. I'm not sure about that, but it's great reason to buy a new model, right? :). Even my wife approved that ;). It's my first Tamiya kit after many, many years and I immediately fall in love with that company again. Finishing Bf109G-6 atm and will buy A6M3 soon. It's my second attempt with big, serious aircraft models (but I've painted a lot of smaller things last few years, so it's not my 2nd model at all). I'm happy with painting (painted with Tamiya, Vallejo and a little bit of Kimera), not so happy with construction (need to be a little bit more patient sometimes). And proud mother with her children (P-47s in 1/144 from Platz - models I'm using for wargaming):
  6. Hi! Some of my Thunderbolts on the working table... From top to bottom... Revell P-47D, 509th FS, 405th FG, 9th Air Force. Academy P-47D, 509 FS, 405th FG, 9th Air Force. Revell P-47M, 63rd FS, 56th FG, 8th Air Force. Cheers / André
  7. I am currently building Tamiya's 1/48 P-47M with the markings of USAAF 61st Fighter Squadron 56th Fighter Group 8th Air Force flown by Captain Witold Lanowski from Boxted in 1945. I am no P-47 expert, but I learned a lot since I started this build. But I still have some questions I am kind of stuck. 1. Tamiya has an oxygen house in the P-47D cockpit representation, but not in the P-47M Cockpit. Should there be one or was the oxygen house part of the pilot's gear like with the Hurricane? 2. What gunsight was used in the P-47M? was it the K-14 Gunsight? I came across this cockpit picture of a restored P-47M which looks that the restoration was done with a lot of care. Is the Gunsight in the picture above a K-14? In regards to the markings of this aircraft, it shows the US markings in with a light blue edge instead of dark blue. The only picture I could find was this ( are there any other pictures of 421108?) In regards to the light blue outline of the national markings, was this a common occurrence on P-47Ms from the 61st FS? All other pictures I could find don't have it as the national marking is surrounded by the black upper colour. Could it be that this colour was silver instead of light blue as the tone of above picture is matching the outline of the letters rather well. Any help and thoughts are much appreciated. Cheers, Peter
  8. Always wanted to make a P-47 (or three) so why not. I still have some space on my workbench which needs to be filled This will be my first silver paint job - fortunately mostly on the under surface. I think Tamiya's 1/48 P-47M with the markings of USAAF 61st Fighter Squadron 56th Fighter Group 8th Air Force flown by Captain Witold Lanowski from Boxted in 1945 looks smashing. This is the only picture I found of his mount. Are there any other pictures around? The Tamiya kit should be a straight forward build. I will add some resin and PE, but unfortunately the stuff hasn't arrived yet. Cheers, Peter
