  1. I would have swore I started a post on this but could not find it to save my life. This is Tamiya's 1/48th P-47 I'm planning to use Cutting Edge decal sheet. I've been wanting to do a P-47 marked as Eileen since seeing the Academy box art years and years ago on the store shelves. Doing the checkered nose had been giving me anxiety so in a rush of inspiration, I paused another build to tackle them back in June 2022. The Cutting Edge sheet provided the checkers but so did Tamiya and I felt I was going to have better luck with Tami's decals. They were in three parts compared to CE's 2 piece. I started out painting the cowl gloss white as a base. Then came the moment of truth.... There's some wrinkles but I got them mostly out with a healthy dose of Solvaset. Not too shabby, and I like that some of the black squares "chipped" as I'm sure they wouldn't have stayed perfect with use. From there, I started in the normal spot, the cockpit. Paints are Model Master, the green is Euro Green which I like as a match for "P-47 cockpit green". The black is just MM black. I did lay down a base of Alclad aluminum before the green for the chipping effects. I used the kit decals for the instruments and I'm very happy with the way it looks. They conform really well considering Tamiya's decals reputation for being thick, same with the cowl checks. There's some wrinkles but they're really only visible in this photo. I also added some aftermarket cockpit stencils which aren't really visible in these shots. I used a resin seat with molded belts from a company whose name escapes me, but I didn't manage to get a shot of it. 🫤 That's all for now, more to come.

  4. Calling it done for this P-47. This is a vintage Hasegawa 1/72 Thunderbolt kit built straight OOB. Since the cockpit was very sparse I made sure the pilot was well painted. Paints are mostly Vallejo except for RAF dark green for which I used Tamiya. Decals are from a very old Frog kit. HB975 flew with 135 Squadron RAF from Chittagong, India.

  6. So having found my chosen victim for this GB, what a pleasant surprise to find that rather than building a NMF version I could build a French version. And as I've recently had the pleasant of meeting up with @jean down in London the timing is perfect Here's what it should look like, I'm already nervous of those blooming stripes but "c'est la vie" Cheers Pat
  7. Hello all, This Tamiya 1/72 P-47D-27 was built in the markings of Lt. James R. Hopkins' aircraft. The model was painted with AK real colors acrylics, and weathered with Tamiya enamel washes and weathering powders. Some Aftermarket items were used: -Eduard PE in the cockpit -Master pitot tube -Brassin wheels -Montex decals Some details were added to the model including the fuel supply plumbing and tail-wheel landing gear door actuators. I used Hypodermic needles for the gun barrels. I built this model in a GB with my dad, who built 4 P-47s, which you can see in this post: Happy New Year to everyone, Anna
  8. Hello to all, This gaggle of P-47s were my latest completed project, with kits coming from 3 different manufacturers, including some heavy profile corrections and cross-kit adaptations. 1) P-47D-27-RE "Elsie", "Y8-E" represents an aircraft flown by Major Clay Tice of 507th FS, it is built from Tamiya's P-47, and the decals used are from Eagle Cal. 2) P-47D-28-RE "Jeanie" was built using the veteran Academy's P-47 kit. Mine became a bit of a “Frankenstein” kit receiving many parts from other kits, including a spare Tamiya P-47 cowling, a spare Revell landing gear, resin wheels, Tamiya propeller, Tamiya bomb racks, etc. The engine was replaced with a Quickboost one. The nose art decals come from a Kagero's book :SMI library: P-47 Thunderbolt with the USAAF - European Theatre of Operations. 3) P-47M-1-RE "HV-M" represents an aircraft flown by Capt. Boleslaw Gladych of the 56th FG, the model used was Revell's P-47, that required a lot of work to correct the ventral profile ("fat belly"). Other area that needed some great attention was the engine cowling (with horrible open cooling flaps) that were completely replaced on the close position. The Decals for Gladych's aircraft are from 3 different decal sheets including a cartograf sheet from a Hobby 2000 boxing of Revell's P-47 and some Techmod as well. Besides the troubled ventral area, the Revell kit captures the P-47 lines very well and its surface detail is as good as the Tamiya kit. 4) P-47D-25-RE "A1", in Brazilian markings is a Revell kit as well, heavily modified and upgraded. The kit comes from one of the first Revell issues of the kit and had a much better moulding quality. The Hobby 2000 boxing seems to show the moulds wearied and damaged, with a lot of flash and ill formed parts. decals for "A1" are from 3 different sources too, including FCM decals and DK Decals. Note: The Hamilton standard propeller on "A1" is a temporary one, the aircraft's propeller should be a Curtiss symmetrical, the reason for this inaccuracy is because we currently don't have a Curtiss propeller at hand that we can use for the kit. Common details to all kits: -For the NMF Mr Color Super Metallic II paints and Vallejo Metal Colors acrylics were used. The rest of the camo on the NMF P-47s and Gladych's aircraft was painted with Ak Real Colors and Tamiya acrylics. Note: The controversial Night Blue colour for Gladych's aircraft was home-mixed (looks much lighter on the photos below that on natural light) -Eduard Photo-Etched was used for the interior in all the kits, -Brassin wheels were used on the Tamiya and Revell kits. -Scratched-built sway arms and fuel lines were added to all the models. -All radial engines had ignition harnesses, details and even manufacturer plates added. -All kits' canopy bubble sections are vacform parts. P-47 "Elsie" was awarded David Hannant Memorial award, first place, at Scale Model World 2023. Happy Modelling and Happy New Year to all!

  12. Howdy folks, I am on a 1/72 P-47 trip and was wondering how do the Academy and Revell Bubbletops compare, IIRC the belly TC scoop was a bit narrow in one of the twos, I am away from home and have no other access to documentation. Other than Tamiya's Razorback, is Academy better than Hasegawa and is the quick build Hobby Boss acceptable? Love the Bonnie that was flying at Oshkosh and would like to do a heritage pairing for Passionate Patsy after seeing the 310th FS F-16 retro paint job.

  14. Hello guys, Here are the photos of my latest completed model, Tamiya's 1:48 P-47D Razorback. The model was painted as "Little Chief," flown by Frank Klibbe.
  15. Hello everyone, I'm happy to show you my first ever P-47, the Tamiya Razorback in 1:48. I'll be making a start on it today. Scheme chosen will be "Little Chief," just because it has the bomber escort option with the three underside fuel tanks. It's also the more colourful option than "Spirit of Atlantic City."
  16. Just when you thought it was safe to get back into the water, there he goes again...! Hi folks, getting ready to start the latest chop shop conversion for my collection, the one-of-a-kind XP-47F, which is historical on two accounts. First, Republic Aviation's first use of the Langley Field Wind Tunnel's data on laminar air flow wings, probably (at least in popular thought) derived from the Curtiss XP-46, also possibly used later on the NA-73 Mustang series (P-51's, Mustang I's, etc.). Although, it is also said that North American also had extensive prior testing at their disposal -- who knows? Anyway, the second reason the aircraft is historical, is because when they added the laminar flow, more "straight wing" wing to the aircraft, it changed the CG, so that (8 or 10 inched were added to the front cowl area, a mod which stuck on the later C and D model, etc. Below is all the information that I have been able to come up with, so far: Along with some drawing, which I have cropped for my own needs: The original drawing can be had in a discussion thread over on the WWII Aircraft Forum HERE Although, I found mine elsewhere. On the WWII forum, there is also a second set of drawings, and a conversation about which is correct. I have made my choice, as you will see in this build thread, as I'm not getting any younger, and as they say, I may be running out of "daylight" some day. Hopefully, not too soon, as I have a pretty larger "bucket list"! For this build, I will use my usual, more inexpensive than other kits, Academy P-47D Razorback, and the old generic aftermarket resin cockpit set: Also, if anyone has any more data or photos, please feel free to jump right in. Also, a reminder to those old, seasoned scratch-builder and conversion maestro's, this build will be detailed in the needed areas, and may be old-school and archaic to some. Primarily I do this to show younger or less-experienced modelers how I happened to do it, in hopes that more will jump in and perhaps contribute new ideas about easier ways or alternative modern materials to get the job done a bit easier. I shall commence anon, stay tuned. Ed
  17. Hi all! This is my first WWII build. OOB Tamiya, lovely kit. Aftermarket decals SuperScale Decal No. 72-811. Tamiya acrylic base coats with Tamiya enamel pin wash and some weathering with Abteilung 502 and Mig Oil Brushers. A very loud shout-out to Seamus whose P-47 inspired and served as the model for this build. Thanks for looking!
  18. Here is my build of Tamiya's P-47D Bubble-top in 1/48 scale. Kit went together with usual Tamiya quality and really was rather straight forward. Finished in AK Xtreme Metals Polished Aluminium and I used Mircoscale aftermarket decals. Please feedback and critique more than welcome. Added some images of the bubble top with the razorback.
  19. Hi Everyone I’m calling the Wicked Wabbit done. This is the truly excellent Tamiya 1/48 scale P-47 and it’s been in a state of partial completion for about four years, wish I’d just settled down and got it done in one session. It’s also the first time I’ve used a Montex mask and wet transfer set and it won’t be the last, they really are superb and make the model sing. Other than that, the model is basically out the box except for the seat belts which are home made. Hope you like it.. Kind regards Trace
  20. Hi again, time to present another model made in 2020. The Academy-kit is superb in terms of details, not so much in terms of decals. Luckily, Kits World Decals offers great aftermarket decals, so I decided to give it a go. I also like the subject a lot 😉 One thing I would do differently now would be to drill out the guns. Thanks for looking, comments & criticism always welcome!
  21. A 1/48 scale Tamiya kit build of Major George Bostwick’s extremely colourful P-47M ‘Hotrod’ Thunderbolt as it was in mid-1945 after shooting down a Messerschmitt Me-262A jet. To celebrate this feat, it was marked with the addition of a black cowling band to the already colourful 56th Fighter Group dark blue and light blue scheme. Spent rather longer on the weathering and chipping than usual for this build as without it, this scheme tended to look rather too ‘cartoony’ for my taste. Pleased with the end result though 🙂
  22. Hello Friends! Thunderbolt P-47D-28-RA I decided to do some improvements to the kit Worked with the engine and undercarriage bays Machine guns made from injection needles I selected the serial number according to the reference literature Enjoy watching! I wanted it as best, it turned out as always...

  25. Hello, While researching the famous P-47C (HV-P, BuNo. 41-6235) flown by Lt. Robert 'Bob' Johnson of 61st FS / 56th FG, i noticed a discrepancy between the artwork and the only photo (known to me) depicting the nose: Where's the "Half Pint" inscription in the photo? The area looks a bit different, so it might be over-painted (?) source: American Air Museum in britain source: Reddit
