Due to the market debut of the new excellent 1/72 Airacobra kit by ArmaHobby my (so far almost unsuccessful) search for photos of the USAAF P-39Q, fighting in the Mediterranean in 1943-44, became even more urgent. There were only a handful of these aircraft - a maximum of 200 or so. And only 3 fighter groups: 81st FG (91st, 92nd and 93rd FS), 332nd FG (99th, 100th, 301st and 302nd FS) and 350th FG (345th, 346th and 347th FS). Perhaps single P-39Qs also went to the 68th RG (16th, 111th, 122nd and 154th TRS). All these units were rearmed with P-47 and P-51 over the course of 1944, and the surviving P-39s were handed over to the Italians and the French. Identified is for sure #44-3028 Quanto Costa (exploited to the bottom by all decal manufacturers), while two other machines from the same 332nd FG are known only from single photos, which makes it impossible to determine the complete set of markings (name on the nose, tactical number on the fuselage). I have been trying to dig it for a couple of years and in the last few days it has been pushed a lot by an excellent photo from @Ed Russell , but it is still a long way from the finish line. So maybe there is some other plane. more complete with markings? Cheers Michael

Following some urban legend the 332nd FG Airacobras are always pictured in standard OD/NG camouflage. It is also said that the famous red-painted tails were introduced on the razorback P-47Ds flown by the Group in the summer of 1944. However yesterday I came across two pictures of the 332nd Group P-39s portrayed in March or April 1944 on the Montecorvino airfield (some 10 miles/15km off Salerno). http://lestweforget.hamptonu.edu/page.cfm?uuid=9FEC33AA-CC00-30F3-45DA1E80EE4332CC The vertical fin of 44-3022 (image 10/14) looks lighter than the fuselage tail - moreover there's a darker area surrounding last two yellow digits on the rudder. Could it mean that the whole vertical tail (or at least the rudder) was painted red already on the Tuskegee P-39s? And then came another picture (image 13/14) from the same airfield - remnants of yellow band are visible between the fuselage insignia and tail as is the two digit (almost unreadable) tactical number on the cockpit door. But there is NO SERIAL on the freshly-painted fin while some digits ("72" can be clearly read) are visible under the tailplane. Do you mean such a layout possible for the USAAF plane in Italy? Cheers Michael

P-39Q Tarawa Boom Deay was flown by Major J. H. Powell who served with the 72nd FS of the 21st Fighter Group in the Mariana Islands in 1944. This is the Academy Kit. I used the Scale Aircraft Conversion landing gear plus noseweight for this model. CIMG2578 by Martin Pelz, on Flickr CIMG2581 by Martin Pelz, on Flickr CIMG2583 by Martin Pelz, on Flickr

Well, it's really been a while since I posted anything here. It's also been a while since I finished a model, other than a 1/350 Riich Models Los Angeles Class submarine as SSN-722 USS Key West for a friend who's son serves aboard her. Anyway, first up is the Heller 1/72 P-39Q, finished with Eagle Strike decals for "Snooks 2nd." This was part of a Christmas club challenge to finish a kit by this past weekend for the ValleyCon show in Chicopee, Massachusetts this past weekend. And, I did get it done on time, barely! It's actually not a bad kit, and is more accurate, in many ways, than newer offerings from HobbyBoss and Academy. I might have to try one of the RS Models early P-39s. I've got a set of decals for a nice "D" model. Oh, and this was brush painted with Vallejo Air, though I did airbrush the gloss and flat coats. On to the pictures

Hi All! I would like to show you one of my previous works, from 2013. For the build I used parts of Eduard's Zoom PE set, the resin sets for main wheels and propeller by SBS Models, and a lot of scratch parts of my own (front wheel well, cockpit, radio). US insignia and the serial number on the tail was painted using laser cut custom masks. Gunze and Tamiya paints were used.
