  1. A bit of a disappointment this one, I had high expectations because the Bally-Hoo upon release. The MMP paints did not work as well as hoped, both in color correction and performance. Over-all, it's not a B.XVI, it's a B.Mk35. A shame that Airfix, who made the first ever plastic kit of a Mosquito, put so much time, effort and money into this new tool Mosquito and didn't bother to pick up and look at Squadron Signal #127, Walk Around #15 or Valiant Wings Airframe&Miniature #8. Any one single book would have solved all their problems. I am certainly not any expert Mosquito guy but I know how to look at a picture. Many things were done differently on this kit than as we've done them in the past, exhaust stubs, propeller mounting, landing gear, etc. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's better. So many of the changes just made it a more finicky, time consuming build without any noticeable improvement to the finished model. That said, the fit and accuracy of all the parts interaction is really amazing. After a few steps I stopped test fitting as I knew they would fit perfectly. Except the clear parts and canopy, the bulged side windows were way off. I fixed what they got wrong and made it a B.XVI from the 128 Squadron based at RAF Wyton, UK, December 1944. Airfix decals were great, I only used the codes and serials from the excellent XtraDecal sheet X72334. All the B.XVI stuff is on one sprue frame, "C", so there WILL be a B.MkIX someday that we can all use for our many conversions. I'm not sure if I would buy another. I have an excellent pile of kits and resin already and this is not any real improvement, it's just different. Many parts are overly thick like the seats, all the quartz-like clear parts, the wire guards on the landing gear. We get yet another incorrect interpretation of what canopy framing is on a Mosquito. No "snow guards" in front of the carb intake and still nothing at all in the way of seat belts. Even a decal would be a help. I'm glad it's done and on the shelf. I now have all the mosquitos that Airfix has done.
  2. Here's my attempt at Airfix's new tool Dornier Do17z. I fancied a break from some other longer term projects and wanted something that I knew would go together easily and create little fuss, and as usual with Airfix's latest releases it did just that. I have read that people have had problems with ill-fitting and warped parts in this kit, but I can report nothing of the sort - it was almost a case of throwing some glue and paint into the box, giving it a shake and out it comes. Dornier Do17z, 8./Kampfgeschwader 77, Laon, France, July 1940: It's been built 100% 'out of the box' with the only addition being the swastikas from an Xtradecal sheet. Paints were all Xtracolour enamels. Tom
  3. Just got the Airfix email with the new toolings for 2014 link, some VERY tasty new editions, who would ever have expected a 1/48 Folland Gnat, the Spitfire Vb not too much of a surprise but a new tool Supermarine Swift is fantastic! Also are brand new Blenheim Mk's I & IV, Dornier 17, Tiger Moth!!!, Douglas C47 and of course the mouth watering 1/24 Typhoon... It's going to be a good year.
