Hi Everyone, looks like the sun came out just in time for me to bother you with some photo`s of my latest effort My attempt at Kinetics 1/48 Hawkeye kit, the latest addition to the `too big to go anywhere` collection Finished to represent an aircraft of VAW-114, `Hormel Hawgs` USS Kitty Hawk. Although I`m not entirely sure this was a Vietnam cruise airframe, the decal instructions say the unit was established on USS Kitty Hawk in 1967 off the coast of Vietnam. And seeing as the kit and markings are the only game in town, they`ll have to do 🙂. Decals came from Bingo Decals set 48-004 and went on like a dream as did the kit decals that I used The kit was a bit of a battle, especially as after I`d started it I found that sprue `B` was missing, so I contacted Kinetic, heard nothing (shock horror), and ended up buying another kit to finish it😬 Apart from some brake pipes, antenna wires and replacement static wicks the kit is from the box Hope you enjoy the pic`s, thanks for looking Cheers Russ

Hi everyone, Just put the last few bits on my attempt at Kitty Hawks 1/48 RF-101C Voodoo kit Finished to represent `The Iron Eyeball` of the 45th TRS/460th TRW, `Polka Dots`, based at Tan Son Nhut, South Vietnam, around 1970 Carried out a few improvements to the base kit, mainly around the intakes as the ones in the kit are incorrect for this version...... and after all ready having built a Monogram/Koster conversion and not realising until after I posted it, thought I`d better try and get it right this time. Also tried to correct a circular `vent/intake` about halfway down the right hand side of the fuselage, but as its in a dark area of camo` you can`t see it much anyway. Another area that`s not right is the instrument panel so I `crow barred` the wallet open and invested in an Eduard cockpit set after much deliberation. The kits decals didn`t really inspire me, especially as Recce Voodoos often carried interesting nose art, so I also invested in Print Scales Polka Dots Sheet ( No 48-050 )..... .....and found a scheme with slime lights, so I didn`t have to sand them off. I had a struggle with these as they wouldn`t release from the backing paper and folded up as soon as you tried to move them. In the end only used a few and the remainder came from the kit which silvered really badly and I spent a lot of time painting the silvering out. Still, I`m glad to have a more modern one in the collection but was disappointed about the amount work to get there, on a not exactly cheap kit. Hope you enjoy, thanks for looking. Cheers Russ

Howdy All, Hope you don`t mind me subjecting you to yet another Skyraider ( I got a thing about Skyraiders ), so here`s some pic`s of my latest effort: Another go at Tamiya`s 1/48 A-1J kit Finished to represent `Tiny Tim` of the 602nd Special Operations Squadron at NKP Thailand around 1969 Been wanting to do a Black Bellied Spad for a while but have already done the one in the kit options and have been waiting for some after market subjects to come out. So having waited and waited finally decided to try hand painting some markings and find the rest from the kit and the stash Based on what few photo`s I could find on the subject, apart from the markings, added a few improvements....... .......such as: whip aerial, ignition harness, brake pipes and some yellow canopy handles Also added some landing lights on the wing tip undersides that USAF Skyraiders seemed to have had, the extra gun pod came from the spares box. Howdy all, Just got some pic`s of my latest effort, Hasegawas 1/48 SH-3H kit, `loosely` converted to represent a SH-3A ..... ...used for Combat Search and Rescue ( CSAR ) during the Vietnam War Based on a picture in Dana Bells Vietnam Warbirds book and a few photo`s found on Google Had the kit hanging around for years with the intention of trying to convert it into a USAF CH-3 Jolly Green Giant....... .....but in the end decided life`s too short and opted for a Low Viz US Navy, just to try and do something different with it. Modified the undercarriage sponsons, shortened the tailplane, filled the sonar buoy hole and forgot to armour the seats, doh! Not 100% but it`ll do for my shelves 🙄 Hope you enjoy the pic`s, thanks for looking Cheers Russ

Howdy Everyone, managed to get some pic`s of my latest effort: My attempt at making an early F-105 Wild Weasel from by back dating HobbyBoss`s 1/48 F-105G kit Finished to represent a `F` version ( although some captions call it a `G`, but as it hasn`t got the az-el antenna on the nose or the integrally built ECM pods I`ll stick with `F` ) Completed as `Sam Fighter` using left over decals from the Monogram kit I did try to persevere with improving the kits under size cockpit, but gave up when I got to the seats and invested in a resin and etched Aires item. Other improvements include: brake pipes and wiring for the landing lights, detailing the main gear doors a bit, wiring on the nose gear and opening up the vents on the gun access door Modifications include, aforementioned cockpit, removal of the ECM fairings on the fuselage sides, removal/omission of various antenna, modified the fin and converting the wing tips to the earlier configuration The armament load was a not unusal load and I chose it as it`s a bit different to what you normally see. Howdy all, Just finished my attempt at making an Early Vietnam era F-105D from the old 1/48 Monogram kit Finished to represent an aircraft of the 334th TFS/355th TFW, Takhli RTAFB, Thailand, circa 1964/65 Had to make a few mod`s to the base kit, including: deletion of the gun compartment vents, deletion of the afterburner cooling air scoops, deletion of the fuselage spine, enlarge the tail air intake, removed various scab plates from the air frame, gun camera and nose antennas. Noticed in photo`s that the Aluminium Silver Paint they were finished in didn`t show too many panel lines, so kept them to a minimum Decals came from the stash. Here`s some pic`s of the rest of the family so far........Later model F-105D, `Polish Glider` EF-105F, Early Wild Weasel, `Sinister Vampire` And finally; F-105G, Wild Weasel, `Hanoi Hustler` Hope I haven`t bored you too much with my Thud obsession Thanks for looking, Cheers Russ

Hi Everyone, finished this one last week and have finally got a `none grey day` with a strange yellow thing in the sky, to take some pic`s My second attempt at building Hasegawa`s 1/48 A-4C Skyhawk kit Finished in the markings of VA-94, `Mighty Shrikes`, USS Ranger, around 1964-65 Built mostly as Mr Hasegawa intended with just some seat belts added The bombs even came from a Hasegawa weapons set and depict an aircraft fitted out for `Bridge Busting` Decals came from AOA Decals set 48-010 `Battle Scooters (3)` Made the mistake of fitting the two small intakes about half way down the fuselage and didn`t notice until I`d done the decals..... ....which took some very careful cutting and sanding to correct with out damaging the Orange Shrike markings at the same time RBF tags from an Eduard set. Hi Everyone, Thought I`d show you some pic`s of my very latest effort, yet another attempt at making Matchbox`s finest into something resembling a `Fat Faced Spad` Finished to represent an A-1E of the 602nd Air Commando Squadron, based at Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam in the early/mid 1960`s Made quite a few improvements, including: widening the propeller blades, reshaping the cowl front, ignition harness, vent on the fin leading edge, wing fences at the wing trailing edge,...... steps on the fuselage, static whips on the rudder, much work on the undercarriage and wheel wells, tarted the seats up, a little detail in the `blue room`, aerials, made a windscreen wiper... and cowling shutters ( that you can barely see ). All were made from scratch, I did get an old Monogram one with the intention of robbing it, but decided to build it instead ( coming soon !) the weapons all came from the stash and I tried to recreate a fairly common load for the plane and time frame The decals came from Caracal Decals set CD48046 Hope you enjoy, thanks for looking Cheers Russ

Hi Everyone, Hope you don`t mind seeing another T-28 fresh from the Kitchen table ( I`ve got a thing about Vietnam era T-28`s ) Roden`s 1/48 kit ( actually from the `B` boxing but done to represent a `D` ) Finished to represent an aircraft of the Khmer ( Cambodian ) Air Force towards the end of the South East Asia Conflicts They were supplied to the Khmers under a programme called Project Flycatcher but I`m not entirely sure if this was one of those. Built mostly from the kit but with some weapons pylons made from some from the spares box and some plastic sheet Napalm tanks are modified Trumpy Dragonfly items and a couple of antenna from the stash with wire whip aerial Decals came from AOA`s`Trainers No More` sheet Had a bit of a headache with this one as both fuselage halves were short shot around the nose bear bay but the extra filler helps keep the nose down. Howdy All, Took some pic`s of my latest completion whilst it was still sunny, so I hope you don`t mind if I inflict a few on you 🙂 My attempt at Trumpeters 1/48 F-100D kit Finished in the markings of `Iron Bird` of the 308th TFS in Vietnam Built almost completely from the box..... Additions being: usual dodgy seat belts, rear view mirror, a few blade antenna and some Snake Eye bombs from a Hasegawa weapons kit Made an effort to improve the look of the intake using brute force and extreme violence....... ....also shortened the main U/C legs and shimmed the tyres as I thought they looked too skinny Decals came from Caracal Models sheet: CD48128, F-100 Hun in Vietnam Part 2 Hope you enjoy, thanks for looking Cheers Russ

Hi everyone, Me again, come to bother you some more, with my latest effort: My attempt at Trumpy`s 1/48 RA-5C Vigilante Finished to represent an aircraft of RVAH-5, Savage Sons` aboard USS Ranger, on it`s final Vietnam combat cruise from a photo in Osprey`s Vigilante book. Built almost entirely from the box contents with a few embellishments, including: brake pipes, intake FOD covers, rear view mirrors....... .......a piece of wire to represent a redundant blind rail on the front canopy that I noticed was still evident in several photo`s........ ... and the usual dodgy home made seat belts. I also noticed the rear canopy was a much lighter colour and had some blinds which were still used by the rear crew member that I also tried to represent. Decals are some from SuperScale sheet 48-1012, the stash and some from the kit. The fuselage was joined using slabs of plastic card like a vac form kit and reinforced with bits of sprue. Hi Everyone, Just managed to finish the first of my haul from Telford last November Fujimi`s 1/48 AH-1J Seacobra Finished in the markings of US Marines HMA-369, nicknamed `The Pistol Pete`s` during the Vietnam War and later `The Gunfighters` Had a pleasant surprise when I looked in the box as the kit was miles ahead of their AH-1G kit that I built some years ago..... ...but not so good when I started to build it as I discovered the kit had no nose ! ( no jokes about ` how does it smell ?` please )🙂 So had to scratch build one from plastic sheet and car body filler, I also extended the intake walls backwards a bit as the kit ones ended at the mouth of the intake Hope you enjoy, thanks for looking Cheers Russ

Hi All, Just managed to catch a bit of brightish weather and took some photo`s of my latest completion My attempt at Hobby Bosses 1/48 MiG-17F Finished to represent an aircraft of: 921st Fighter Regiment, NVAF, Sao Do around 1968 Built pretty much from what`s in the box, minus the engine to try and make it sit on the nose wheel a bit easier Still took a fair bit of weight though ( might have to reinforce the shelf ) Decals are from `L Decals Studio` sheet LDS 48007, `MiGs over North Vietnam part 2` Had to try this scheme when I saw it though I was tempted by a stripey camo`d option on the sheet. Hi everyone, thought I could show you my attempt at making a recce version of the Voodoo from the old Monogram kit Used the Koster Conversion which has vac-form front end from behind the canopy vac-form ecm pods and resin exhausts the markings are bogus, made from bits and pieces from the stash as none come with the conversion but tried to get as near as possible This is my only success at anything Vac-form, which says more about the quality of the conversion than my modelling prowess hope you enjoy looking at.. Hi guys I'm building this as part of a SIG on another forum. The M113 is my favourite military vehicle of all time so I was happy when AFV Club recently gave us a new tool. It has also been a good few years since I have built one.The kit is typical AFV Club and overall looks nice but I do have a couple of issues with it. The bad There are a few ejector pin marks that will require attention because of where they are. I will high light some of these as the build progresses. The price. At £60 RRP it is too much for what it is I feel but that's new tool prices these days. I managed to snag this one for £50 which softened the blow. Vinyl rubber band tracks. For the price it would have been nice to have at least separate plastic links. The Academy M113 was the benchmark before this and is a great kit. But it's 25 years old now and like all its predecessors it still didn't have the rear ramp pulley. The AFV Club kit is great to see and they will hopefully release a few different options of the chassis just like Academy did.The good Rear ramp pulley represented. Workable suspension A plethora of small arms are included in the kit. Anyway on with the build.I have no idea which option I will be doing yet but I will be using the picture below for the set up I will be aiming for. The M113 was seen with so many weapons configurations but I think the Minigun on the cupola and the M2 Browning 50 cal on the back just looks mean. Mostly Ammo brown wash for German dark yellow. A dark wash followed by pigments dabbed over. A mix of Mig Vietnam Earth and Ammo Airfield Dust. These were then coated in enamel thinners from dabbing a brush over and letting the capillary action fill the gaps. Once dry the areas where most foot traffic will occur was rubbed back with an old knackered paint brush and a make up type sponge on a stick. The kind of thing you get in the Tamiya weathering palettes. The effect looks worse under my non daylight LED lights and looks quite orangery like rust. I may try to lighten things up a bit more in the future I will see how it goes. Considering most of the floor will be covered in ammo cans it really shouldn't matter. This time Tamiyas 1/48 A-1H, completed as an aircraft of the 514th Fighter Squadron, Son Vuong Flight, South Vietnam Air Force Circa 1962-63 Made a few alterations to the base kit with deletion of one antenna on the underside and fabricated a large blade antenna for the rear fuselage, removal of the tail hook and made blanking plate, Bombs came from the spares box and as some pic`s showed them quite lightly loaded, I thought I`d do it that for a change Decals were from the remains of a Cutting Edge sheet and some from the kit and stash Other wise just the usual seat belts, brake pipe and canvas cover behind the seat. Howdy All, Thought I`d share some pic`s of my latest effort, Revells reboxing of Monograms 1/48 Texan kit Completed to represent an aircraft of the Air Training Center, Nha Trang, South Vietnam, where they were used..... ...to train South Vietnamese pilots between 1954 to `56 until the training was relocated to the USA. Built pretty much from the box ( as there`s not a lot to add that Monogram didn`t provide ).... Exceptions being: wiring harness for the engine, seat belts and some aerials. Hi everyone, On a roll and finished two this week ! You know, sometimes, you get the urge to build something that you know is going to be too big to go anywhere but think....who cares- I`m building one regardless........ Well here`s my example : Trumpy`s 1/48 Skywarrior that I`ve just put the finishing touches to. Built and loosely converted to represent a RA-3B from their KA-3B kit Finished to represent an aircraft of US Navy, VAP-61, based at DaNang, Vietnam around 1969 Modifications include adding the fairings on the fuselage and defining the camera hatches on the lower forward fuselage, filling in various unwanted panel lines and bomb doors....... drilling the port holes and filling with Krystal Klear and what looks like an IR Seeker on stbd side as well as making some new antenna Made life very difficult by lowering the flaps and apart from pitot tube and decals the rest is from the box Apparently the paint scheme wasn`t too popular as crews preferred all over black. Hi Everyone, At last I`ve finished my attempt at Eduards 1/48 MiG-21 and managed to get some pic`s whilst the weather cleared briefly. Built from the PFM Profipack boxing and finished to represent an aircraft of: 927th `Lam Son`, NVAF, piloted by Le Thanh Dao, 10th May 1972 Really well detailed kit that seemed to fight me right up until the end, too many almost microscopic parts for my liking which often pinged away into some other reality or were impossible to hold and file down..... ...and ended up being replaced with bits of wire and scraps of plastic. The Photo Etch, which I normally dread worked really well by comparison. The last thing that happened was the gunsight disappeared at some point after being glued to the windscreen frame right at the end of the build, so I had to cobble one together from bits and pieces....... ........then fit it after the screen and seat had been fitted. The scheme isn`t one of the kit options and is one that caught my eye in Ospreys MiG-21 Units of the Vietnam war book, Bort No`s came from the stash. Hope you enjoy, thanks for looking Cheers Russ

Hi everyone, just put the finishing touches on my attempt at Hobbycrafts 1/48 Beaver, which I hope you don`t mind me sharing Finished to represent a RU-6A Beaver of the 146th Radio Research Company, Army Security Agency, US Army, Vietnam Which were used to monitor North Vietnamese Radio Traffic and Intelligence Gathering I had to do on of these to compliment my RU-1A Otter I did a little while back that you may remember Apart from the obvious aerials and dipoles, made a few improvements the the base kit, including: brake pipes, steps on the undercarriage legs, embellished the kit steps on the fuselage........ ...made a new exhaust and wiring harness on the engine Markings came: some from the decal stash and some handpainting Finally a shot of it with its bigger RU-1A Otter brother... Hi Everyone, Finally got to do some modelling after a 2 week break and managed to put the finishing touched on my latest effort this morning My attempt at building a CH-53D from Revells 1/48 CH-53G kit and finishing it to represent........... A US Marines Sea Stallion at about the time of `Operation Frequent Wind Option IV` 29th April 1975 Which was the evacuation of Saigon, S Vietnam following the N Vietnamese invasion of the city Most of the work consisted of leaving lots of aerials and sensors off and using the earlier type main rotor blades in the kit I did attempt to enhance the interior a bit but you cant see much through the thick transparencies and I refined the tail rotor mechanism a bit. Another of my `Far to big to go anywhere` kits, but, I originally had bought it to chop up to try and make a `Jolly Green Giant` which would have been smaller Decals came from bits and pieces in the stash. Hi Everyone, Here`s some pic`s of my latest attempt at Trumpy`s 1/48 Dragonfly Finished to represent an aircraft of the 604th Air Commando Squadron, 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing...... based at Bien Hoa AB, South Vietnam, 1967-68 Completed in a short lived experimental camouflage scheme which I`d seen profiles of here and there and which caught my eye..... .... but of which I had my doubts until I picked up a book: `Vietnam Warbirds in Action` by Dana Bell which had a photo of one dated 1967. After much`Googling` I also found a photo of one in a similar scheme at an Airplane Museum in Thailand, so thought I`d give it a go. Apart from decals and aerials it`s made from the box contents. Hi Everyone, Just put the finishing touches on my `Easy Build` Hobbyboss 1/48 Huey Which I painted up in early US Army camouflage, inspired by a photo of a `B` model Huey of the 117th Aviation Company, based at Ban Me Thuot in the early 1960`s..... ...I found in Squadrons `US Army Aviation in Vietnam book. It really was an easy build but some people may not like the lack of some details, for me, I just added: seat belts, cyclic stick, a bit of cabin roof detail , sanded the ends of the skids into shape....... ....added footpedals and some hydraulic lines. I did manage to make life a bit difficult by not adding any nose weight and had to cut the nose off and add some. Decals were some from the stash and some from the kit.
