Opened on 50-th anniversary of Victory in Great patriotic war (May 9th 1995), Victory museum is located at the Victory square in Moscow. Venue can only be described in one word - I M M E N S E Besides the usual weapons and medals, a very interesting part of the exhibit are huge dioramas of key battles, which slowly merge into murals (border is very hard to see, even up close). Also of interest is the Hall of glory - where names of all recipients of People's hero of USSR medal are inscribed. Two busts at the entrance are of Kozhedub and Pokrishkin - most famous Soviet fighter-pilots Unfortunately, the entire second floor is occupied by 'Z' propaganda, so I skipped it. But the subtle indoctrination also awaits outside... More pics HERE Thanks for looking!

VDNH (Выставка достижений народного хозяйства - Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy) is a big park and a fair ground, in which each of ex-USSR republics had a pavillion (many still standing today). Complex is immense, sporting also a Language museum, Hippodrome, lakes, and even an Cosmonautics and Aviation Centre Nearby is also Museum of Cosmonautics, as well as this famous monument: More pics HERE Thanks for looking!

While on a trip to Moscow, I took the opportunity to visit one of the biggest and most interesting aviation museums. Two things are worth mentioning: This museum is actually not close to Moscow (you need to go to end of a Metro line, then travel some additional 40 min by bus) It will take an entire day to properly enjoy and see everything there (maybe even more if You're a Soviet plane buff). Quite a surprise is a well-preserved Sopwith triplane: As well as inclusion of lend-lease machines (often intentionally 'forgotten' by modern Russian historiography) Also, seeing these big-boys in person was super interesting. More pics HERE Positive sides of tour: Very diverse offer of machines, some (like prototypes) can only be seen here. WWII section (my area of interest) is finally moved to indoor exhibition after years of neglect outside Other notes: A pretty relaxed attitude towards color accuracy. The restoration staff definitely has a thing for lurid and toxic shades... 'Z' propaganda is visible at places. Sometimes very blatant and bizarre. I mean, what even is this? 🤣 Thanks for looking!

Operation Typhoon - The Assault on Moscow 1941 ISBN : 9781612006710 Casemate Illustrated - Casemate UK Operation Barbarossa initially went very well for the German High Command and by the end of September 1941 they turned their attentions to the main prize of Moscow. It was hoped that by capturing Moscow this would end the war in the East. On paper the Germans it would seem had far more men and equipment on hand to accomplish this against that the Soviets had to defend with. However like many areas of warfare this initial assessment would not help them. Marshal Zhukov had now begun to get more reinforcements and supplies. The Germans on the other had were now at the end of a long supply line. The Russians were also prepared to fight to death to defend their capital something the Germans may have under estimated. This book in the Casemate Illustrated series combines text, pictures, and maps to bring us the Germans Assault on Moscow and the Russians defence. The book goes into details of the planning, and execution of their mission, and subsequent actions until they the Germans withdrew. There are profiles of the tanks, vehicles and aircraft which took part. The book is A5 in format, 128 pages long and contains many contemporary photographs. Conclusion If you're interested in the war in the east, and where the Germans were finally stopped then this is a good read. Highly Recommended. Review sample courtesy of
