  1. Hi guys, I've been a little quiet on the posting front of late. It seems I like building models more than photographing & commenting on them! I have however, been into the forum gleaning much useful info from knowledgeable members 👍. Since my last posting, the BoB shelf is now inhabited with this, Grumpy Unwins Mk1b 'Canon Spitfire' a Boulton Paul Defiant and I am in the 'last throws' of finishing one of Josef Frantiseks Panel wing Hurricanes with another early Mk1 Panel wing under construction 🙂 Anyway, here we go with my 1:72 scale build of Spitfire P9386 or 'Brian Lane's' Spitfire as it it seems to be called. I wonder why? It seems from what information I have gleaned that he only flew it twice. This is the Tamiya Mk1 Spitfire (60748). It is all OoB except for the Print Scale main decals and Techmod technical stencils where these were applied. Thanks go out to @Troy Smith, @wmcgill, @Graham Boak, @Mark Postlethwaite, @fishplanebeer, @Fukuryu among others for their help 👌👍 Of the Tamiya, Airfix and KP Mk1a kits (that offer no open canopy option), the Tamiya kit is the best option for an open canopy build with the canopy fairly easy to cut and make to fit over the rear section of the canopy. I cut out the cockpit access door too and have this displayed open. I was pretty happy with this effort at the end of the build but since building the others above in following weeks, it looks a tad shoddy in places to me now. A nice complaint maybe. I must be improving since my return to scale modelling? Still, it looks lovely on the BoB shelf.😁 The instrument panel had to be painted since there is no decal for the same in the kit. From this angle one can also see the 'Undercarriage down indicator' on the port wing. These were painted white with a little touch of red on the inner side to give a semblance of some red lettering (as per Brian Lane's description in his book 'Spitfire'.↙️ The Port wheel, stanchion and cover where painted 'night' as per the famous photograph which it would seem were a 'carry over' from the Sky S/Night underside colour scheme when the order to paint the undersides completely Sky Type 'S' (thanks to @Troy Smith for that heads up). ↙️ Anybody noticed the white spinner yet? I'd say there have already been a few people yelling at the screen that it is not yellow! 🤭 ↙️ Personally, judging by the famous photograph, I don't think it was yellow. The tone of the yellow on the fuselage does not seem to match the spinner where the angle to the sun is similar. It is closer to the white in the roundel and tail . ↙️ The aircraft arrived to 19th Squadron late on the 3rd September. Brian Lane was promoted to Squadron commander on the 5th September. I have gone for white in honour of Brian Lane. I am presuming it may have been painted white in recognition of his promotion just after this date. It also may have been painted Sky Type 'S'. We may never know! I took a photo on the SLR at around 60mm focal length with camera set to B&W out of interest. I used an Angle Poise Lamp that has warm white LED's for the sun in a position that I estimated was similar to the sun in the original shot. I would have to tweek the positions in another shot since the shadows aren't perfect. All good fun 😁. There seems to be less of a contrast between the yellow on my fuselage roundel and the white spinner but there is still a difference! The model is based on the original image 🙂 ↙️ Happy modelling to all. Lindsey
  2. Hi guys, Am getting close to decaling on 1:72 P9386 QV-K. Brian Lanes yellow spinnered Spitfire. A common build and a nice one for the BoB shelf. Looking around at other builds, they show technical stenciling on underside. Eduard's 1:48 kit instructions state that "no stenciling is seen on the bottom surfaces". I am now wondering should I run with underside stencils or not? 🧐 Any thoughts or further info out there. I have not managed to find any other reference than Eduard's regarding the lack of bottom surface stencils. Thanks in advance, Lindsey
  3. HI all Maiden post Picking up tools again after a fifteen year layoff... this site has been a revelation in terms of knowledge and information so i hope someone can help. First project is to renovate Airfix 1/24 Spitfire Mk1A - Mk1A gun bays are horribly devoid of detail. Airfix guns improved with Master kit but i want to put in tray/chute details (ignoring the fact that Airfix ammunition boxes don't line up with Brownings....) I have looked on internet and my own references for last two weeks to find a photo of gun bays with ammunition boxes in situ connected to Brownings by trays with cartridge/feedbelt chute on other side on a MK1A, but surprisingly no luck. Walk arounds etc that i could find do not show this detail and generally show closed access panels. A few pics of armourers clambering on wing but detail is not clear. There are a few pics around of Hurricane gun bays but its closely grouped 4 machine guns in each wing require one tray to pass over one gun which was not case with Spifire. There are lots of photos of Hispano cannon gunbays but few of Mk1A. I would assume (dangerous!) given development of universal wing type C that this also mirrors Type A wing mark 1A layout for pair of Brownings in each wing but if someone could confirm (ideally with pic or link) ) Mk1A layout that would be brilliant. Apologies if i have missed a thread on this topic - and promise not to ask about interior green and underside colours... Thanks
  4. Hello all, here are a pair of 1/72 Airfix Spitfires I've been working on bit by bit over the last few months. There's a WIP here: Both models went together really easily, I used sprayed Tamiya acrylics with artists oil paints for shading and weathering. There's a few little mistakes (no idea where the mk22 tail wheel went..., etc) but I learned lots along the way and really enjoyed building these two up in parallel. Enjoy!
  5. This build took place late June to early July 2015 after residing in my stash since 2007/8 (can't remember exactly when I bought it) After the Tamiya 109E3 I wanted to try something that was not so shake 'n' bake and, as I wanted a Spitfire to go with the 109, I dug this one out. Work began with spraying the interior a custom mix of RAF interior green using Tamiya paints and then a light wash of burnt umber oils And then threw some paint in the general direction of the pilot figure Oh BTW can anyone tell me how to scale the picture sizes within the post? Whatever size the picture is it comes out enormous. Instrument panel painted up and dial markings scratched in to the faces. Interior assembled and pilot in place I had heard that the trailing edges on the flying surface were a little thick in this kit...no kidding! I think they were a scale 6 inches After much sanding, checking, sanding, checking....... I got the thicknesses to where I no longer cared. Closed up the fuselage added the wings and tailplanes, filled, sanded, refilled, resanded.......added canopy and arrived at the stage below Oh and I also thinned out the oversized cockpit door hinge. Canopy masked.. a bit harder than masking the 109 canopy And sprayed interior colour A nice coat of Halfords grey primer later... Some Tamiya flat aluminium toned down with Tamiya smoke in all the relevant places A bit of preshading After careful and strategic application of masking fluid a nice coat of RAF Sky (another custom mix of Tamiya paints) being careful not to completely obliterate all signs of the preshade. I decided I would try a something new (to me) and spray the camo freehand. I feel that the edges could have more definition but quite pleased with the result. At this point I think I had a rush of blood and completed the build without any further photo's But here it is. I used Xtradecal sheet X48145 as the kit sheet was rubbish. I think I only used the kit decal sheet's stencils And there it is. My second full build after a lengthy hiatus. You can find this aircraft accosting Adolph Galland's Bf109E3 in this RFI Comments and criticisms always welcome.
  6. Some pictures I took today of the completed build. WIP can be found here Next time I'll dust the model before taking the pictures And without the stand (removed using Inpaint) And paired with the older tool Airfix Sptitfire Mk1 which was the next build after this one. And again with stand edited out. And yes, I know the aerial connector is going to the wrong place in the fuselage on the 109. Also the Spit has both HF and IFF fitted which appeared correct according to the Xtradecal drawings for LO.A and, in my innocence, I reasoned that there might have been some crossover . Anyway I hope the above images meet with your approval. Comments and criticisms always welcome.
  7. This is my finished Airfix 1/72 MkIa Spitfire - the new tool version. I really enjoyed building it. It's the first plane I've built in many, many years so it was a bit of a learning experience. It's all brush painted apart from the final application of matt varnish which was from a rattle can. I tried some pre-shading, which I think worked, and this is my first attempt at weathering. The build can be found here. The first photos are ones I took after deciding it was finished and in proper daylight rather than electric light: Next I decided to make a little display base for it on some scrap MDF I had: Which I then tried some close-ups of with the sun at quite a low angle: .....and a couple without the sun: Well that's it for this one. Comments and suggestions welcome. Next off I'm going to do another Spitfire for the 'Less than a tenner' group build. In fact I may even be making two. Kind regards, Stix
  8. Mike’s review of this kit can be found here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/54953-supermarine-spitfire-mk1a/?hl=%2Bspitfire+%2Bairfix - it includes box and sprue photos so I won’t post mine. This is my 100th post and, to celebrate, it’s going to be my first proper WiP. Although I did do one for the Bandai Space Suit, because of the way I opted to make it, it had very little in the way of traditional kit building/painting techniques involved. This one, on the other hand, should be a bit more involved (for me) but it’s probably not going to be very interesting for most of you (seen it all before, etc., etc. ). I actually got started a couple of weeks ago and, I have to say, I’m thoroughly enjoying building it so far! After finishing a project last September I had a bit of a break from making kits. I’ve got some in a very small stash but, at that time, none were crying out to be made and the rest of life kept getting the way anyway. I still kept looking through the pages on this site and began to fancy the idea of making a Spitfire – there are many fine examples in all sizes and guises on this site. Like nearly everyone on here (it seems) I must have built at least a couple of Spitfires many (too many!) years ago. My first inclination was towards the Eduard 1/48 Spitfire Mk. IXc late, ProfiPACK version with all the extra goodies but, having not built a non-sci-fi plane for over 25 years*, I thought I ought to start with something simpler. (* A couple of years ago, when I got back into kit building, I did build the Airfix Captain Scarlet Angel Interceptor). Reading through many Spitfire kit articles I began to be drawn more and more towards the new tool version of the old kit-building staple, the 1/72 Airfix MkIa Spitfire. I got the kit for Christmas and then spent an enjoyable few days gaining more inspiration from this site and collecting WiP and RfI photos to help guide my version. The intention is to use this one to learn and practice some techniques I’ve not used before, so I can work my way up to the Eduard kit. As I have said elsewhere I’m really an OOB modeller but will add simple extras if I think I can cope. I intend to make it pretty much following the instructions in the box and brush paint it. I don’t have an airbrush – I’ve never felt confident enough to risk buying one – most experienced airbrush users seem to indicate the best results come from the more expensive ones and I don’t want to risk forking out for one only to find I can’t use it. I have used rattle cans before but have seen some outstanding brush painted kits on this website so I thought I’d go back to my roots. To this end I have bought some flat ended brushes to try out. Anyway, enough of the waffle! First up is the cockpit. A lick of Humbrol’s Cockpit Green, a Revell Anthracite wash and a bit of dry brushing of the insides of the fuselage got me underway. I do like the new level of detail in/on this kit – my memory of the older Airfix Spitfire is of virtually nothing inside. The detailing was carried out using Revell Anthracite, Revell Aluminium and a spot of Revell’s matt white. I then painted the internal cockpit bits while they were still on the sprues, following the same process, but unfortunately forgot to take a photo before assembling them. The seat took more time than the rest because it was difficult to decide how it should be painted. Some photos of actual Spitfire seats (and models on this site) suggest it should be brown/black (or grey) all over whereas others are mostly cockpit green(ish) with a brown/black back. I opted for the latter because I liked the look but I’d be interested to know what others here on Britmodeller think it should be. I have since purchased the MkI/IIa Airfix Spitfire and hope to try to do a bit more with the cockpit than I have with the current one so any help with this (and the rest of the cockpit) would be much appreciated. While the cockpit parts were still apart I decided I’d try my first addition. I wasn’t intending to use the pilot so thought I ought to try and add some basic seatbelts. I’d read where someone had used Tamiya masking tape so I worked out what would be a suitable width, stuck a piece of tape on my cutting mat and then carefully cut more than enough strips to experiment on. I then painted them a kind of off-white colour (mixed a few paints together) and used a pin to puncture the holes at regular intervals. I added a bit of aluminium paint on the ends for where the fittings would be. Once fixed in place they looked okay so I gave the seat and the belts a further anthracite wash which showed up the details better. Next up I tried dry-fitting the cockpit unit onto each side to make sure it looked okay – here are a few photos. Well that's it for now. I have done a bit more than this but haven't sorted out the photos yet. Thank you for looking (if anyone has been!) and if anyone is still here please feel free to make comments/suggestions - I'm here to learn! Kind regards, Stix
