  1. My latest completion and I must admit I am a bit chuffed with it Revell 1949 Mercury that I was originally going to do a replica of the Badlands film car. However after a coat of black it looked a bit dull, so I re-thought it and decided to do a rust rod. Painted with MIG rust tones/hairspray/grey/varnish/hairspray/green/varnish to get the result. I then had a rush of blood to the head and thought lighting would be a good idea, so got some LED 's from Smallscalelights.co.uk which were great (and the service was excellent). Base and wall are scratchbuilt as is the street lamp (with LED), and the phone booth is a Doozy item from AK in Spain. Probably not immediately obvious, and a bit anal I know, but all the posters, newspapers and licence plate are all from 1972 The year the Badlands film came out.
  2. Here's the start of a Mach2 kit I bought on a whim. I love NASA kits, and there's not that much available in 1/48. I'm thinking of modeling the boxart, or the olive drab army version. We'll see; Section halves were glued and bound with thick rubber bands, then I rotated the sections 90 degrees and cleaned up the seams. Here I've marked out the Gantry connection points, and filed the sub assembly gaps that are visible on the actual rockets. Here's the main Fins for the craft. I did my best to clean them up and get them accurate, but... They just didn't cut it. So I'm starting on a scratchbuilt, more accurate version; I'm going to mold the master and make more copies of the main fins, I'll mass produce the rest. Replicating the upper directional vanes. Here's the exhaust, filled and cleaned up. The marks help me keep the insert aligned as I sand and fit. The black is carbon and rubber infused CA that helps reinforce the seams from the inside. Get to the Choppah! Every time I use this, I hear Arnold in my head :). Using this to keep all the vanes the same size is helpful. Once the vanes are clamped and glue dried. I use milliput to make the final shapes. It's easy to manipulate with water and a few clay tools. I'll get the final finish with standard filler putty. Original part on left for comparison. Bottom half of mold set. Ready to pour the top. Top poured after release agent and stubs shortened. The pour sprues will be expanded after its cured. Here's the vanes and fins, drying and almost ready for final sand/shape.
  3. 2017 wasn't quite as profilic as I had hoped, but putting out 3 kits this year is actually a huge lot more than I'm used to , so it isn't all that bad! First up was the good old Monogram 1/48 Harrier in the '70 Nato vs Warzaw pact GB: Next up was the good old Hobbycraft 1/72 DeHavilland Canada Caribou in the DeHavilland GB: and last up was the not so old, but still good Dragon 1/72 Mercury rocket in the Prototype and X-planes GB: Merry X-Mas to all from snowcovered Kolt in Denmark Hans J
  4. I'll be doing this in remembrance of the brave men and women who paved the way into space for the rest of us to wonder and follow: I'll build it as Freedom 7 - Alan Shepard's ride on the 5'ht of May 1961. Cheers Hans J
  5. I voted for "Made In Britain" GB with Contrail Mayo Composite in mind, but knowing my pace and determination I'm not sure that I could complete the whole stack in time so I decided to do one step at time and start with Mercury. Contrail's Mayo Composite kit was a joint effort between Contrail and Airframe each providing one aircraft. Airframe S.20 moulds look very basic but buildable, will require a lot of scratch building, scribing and detailing to look right.
  6. 1/72 Mercury from Horizon Models a new real-space plastic kit producer from Australia http://www.horizon-models.com/1-72-mercury review: http://www.scalemodelnews.com/2016/01/mercury-rising-from-down-under-space.htm http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/hor/kit_hor_2003.shtml source: cybermodeller:
  7. Going through my photo's. I realized that I had some good photo's of the Blenheim (and Lysander) Mercury engine installation and cowl bracing. These might help anyone doing Airfix's or Classic Airframe's Blenheim kits. The engine is a Mercury XX on a stand, and it was photographed at the Western Canada Aviation Museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I apologise for the quality, but they were taken with a cell-phone camera. Hope they help someone, Colin
