Planning on building a 1/48 Airfix Spitfire Mk. Vb as the plane of RCAF P/O McNair, D.F.C.—AB264 (RAF 249 Sqn.) In my research, I have come across a number of suggestions as to what colors/paint mixes will produce the most accurate blue-grey camo color. That same research also turned up a number of discussions as to the underside color, too (RAF Sky Type “S”, Sky Blue, Mediterranean Blue, and, per the Airfix Instructions, Humbrol 90) For the hell of it, thought I'd lob these questions to the group in the hopes of additional insight and answers: 1. Has anyone here built a Malta Spit like this one? 2. If so, what paints/mixes did you use to get the blue-grey color? 3. What color did you settle on for the underside color? 4. What resources did you consult? 5. Is this one of those topics, due to lack of hard evidence to say otherwise, where modelers are allowed a fair amount of creative license in their painting choices for this particular color? Thank you in advance.

I've finished the third of my triple Malta builds. "Buck" McNair's Spitfire Vb. The Airfix kit is a great build, requiring only the removal of the reinforcing strips over the wheel wells, Ultracast exhaust, entry door and seat. AB264 was a Vickers built Mk Vb, originally finished in the Tropical land scheme (with Sky lowers), and delivered on operation 'Spotter'. After arrival, the Sand color only was oversprayed with a locally mixed Grey and the serials reapplied in White. My kit was finished in the same way, desert scheme oversprayed with Grey using Tamiya acrylics, and weathered with pastels and oils. Build logs here: part 1 part 2 Hope you like, thanks for looking, Colin
