Hi All, With the blessings of the Group Build Mods, I will build this kit for the GB As always with my builds, especially RNZAF aircraft, I always like to add some historical content RNZAF 25 Squadron was formed at RNZAF Seagrove south of Auckland 31 may 1943. Seagrove was a small farming settlement on the shore of the Manukau Harbour (Pronounce phonetically Man-eh -cow) (RNZAF Official - Air Force Museum of New Zealand - Used with Permissions) (RNZAF Official - Air Force Museum of New Zealand - Used with Permissions) As an interesting historic point, Auckland City and surrounds sit on the remains of some 50 volcanoes. The range in the background is the Waitakere Ranges (phonetic Why - Tack - Er - Ree) on Auckland's western region bordering the Tasman Sea. The Waitakere Ranges are the eroded remains of the Eastern section of a 40-60 Km sized volcanic cone that stood some 3-4 Km above sea level (Miocene epoch -circa 10 million years ago), talk about Dante's Inferno Anyway I digress With formation of the squadron, it received (via Lend Lease) some former USMC/USN SBD 3's (some of which were reputed to have flown in the Coral Sea/Midway battles) from the photo below, there were in a very "used" condition - Additionally SBD-4's were also received to supplement the SBD-3's The aircraft wore for a time the US Star before a repaint and addition of RNZAF Roundel (RNZAF Official - Air Force Museum of New Zealand - Used with Permissions) Repaint and addition of RNZAF Roundels (RNZAF Official - Air Force Museum of New Zealand - Used with Permissions) After training, 25 Squadron was shipped off to the forward areas (Solomon's) where they served along side USMC units, receiving on loan some SBD 4 airframes such as NZ5034 below (borrowed from Wikipedia) 25 Squadron trained up on the SBD-4's flying sorties, not in actual bombing, but Scouting/recon and acting as navigation for USMC units SBD-4 - NZ5037 disappeared on one such sortie, the remains being found in 1987, with the wreckage being taken to the RNZAF Museum Later again on loan, 25 Squadron then received newer SBD-5's, with which they then started flying bombing sorties, such as NZ5049 below (RNZAF Official - Air Force Museum of New Zealand - Used with Permissions) On their way to Rabaul to offer up "Some 500lber Love" - 25 Squadron SBD-5's (RNZAF Official - Air Force Museum of New Zealand - Used with Permissions) After 3 months, 25 Squadron returned their SBD mounts to the USMC on 20 May 1944, where it is reported that the USMC Quarter Master stated that they airframes were in as "New" condition. 25 Squadron personnel returned home to train up on the mighty F4U-1 Corsair, where they put their dive bombing experience to good use on return to the Solomon's (Bouganville - Piva etc.) (RNZAF Official - Air Force Museum of New Zealand - Used with Permissions) So with that brief historical note, onto the subject of my build NZ5060 with Donald Duck art (my wife loves ducks so it's a given ) (RNZAF Official - Air Force Museum of New Zealand - Used with Permissions) So onto the kit - from memory, (going by date), this was as start for a Matchbox GB Kit sprues Marking are the Montex Masks Instructions What I have done thus far - I have added internal ribbing etc and also started on the cockpit floor, as the top of the wing was the "Office" floor Well that a starter, thanks for looking in, and more soon Regards Alan
