The MD-80 is along with the DC-8 the best airliner kit Minicraft produced. They released it with a variety of liveries, among them, the Alitalia version. I liked that livery,as it is simple but effective, and for the reason that I saw their DC-9s and MD-80s during the 90s at Zurich airport on a regular basis. One of their DC-9-30s unfortunately crashed into a hill while on approach to Zurich in 1990. The cause was a defective instrument which caused wrong information about the altitude, the strong hyrarchy in the cockpit, that kept the co-pilot from warning the captain. These circumstances led to a too low approach which ended with the fatal crash into a forest on a hillside, that cost the life of everyone aboard... The kit goes together very well with only little need of filler. Some small issues on the kit are the slightly too short undercarriage, the missing front wheel skid and the too long main wheel doors. These areas have been adressed by me and the landing gear was hightened by about 2mm on the main gear and about 1.7mm at the front. I also added a cockpit, taken and modified from a leftover A340 kit. Not much can be seen though through the small windows, but its there๐ The decals come from the kit with some extra detail from a MD-80 detail set. Paints are the usual Gunze white primer 1000 and light grey 315 for the wings and Gunze metallics. Cheers Alex

Hello all, Just finished this latest build. the Minicraft MD-80 kit with Swiftair Real Madrid EC-JQV decals by TwoSix. EC-JQV was painted up in the Real Madrid livery in 2007 to carry the football team and VIP's around until 2009 when they stopped using the plane for political reasons. EC-JQV was scrapped in 2012 but it lives on in 1/144 scale! For a Minicraft build this wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, certainly better than the 737-400 kit, but that's not to say it's a doddle, still needed a fair bit of filler for the fuselage join, but the wings weren't actually too bad considering it's the fiddly interlocking system. I did a few 'dry' fits to find the 'spot' where it would lock in before putting glue on. The last few dry fits worked perfect so having nailed that, I put the glue on and then it didn't lock in as it just did the past few attempts ๐ but I got it in soon after. The stabilzers and engines went on very well, the wheel doors were the most fiddly things of all! Instructions could have been a little bit clearer but wasn't that bad. The decals are excellent and well recommended, they are designed for the Minicraft kit, the blue around the nose was a tad fiddly and required a little bit of blue paint to fill in a gap around the cockpit window as it doesn't quite fit, but that was no problem. I hope you like it and thanks for looking! James.

My recently finished Minicraft 1:144 MD-80 in the old Hawaiian scheme. The kit decals are the wrong colour but I quite like the purple so not fussed. The kit goes together easy enough but has been on and off the bench for over 2 years now. I just kept putting it aside. Having recently deciding to finish a few of my KUTA builds this is the first. There are many others to come. Hello Everyone Right another question session!!!! I must be driving people mad... lol.... So moving quickly on from the 707 i have deided i want to do a series of MD-80s. Id like to do the following. Alitalia MD-82 http://img.planespotters.net/photo/299000/original/I-DATI-Alitalia-McDonnell-Douglas-MD-82_PlanespottersNet_299842.jpg Airtours MD-83 http://www.flickr.com/photos/jordi757/3480792833/ Air Liberte MD-83 http://www.al-airliners.be/k-o/liberte/ijmd-83-2.jpg SAS MD-87 http://www.freefoto.com/images/2050/38/2050_38_19---SAS-McDonnell-Douglas-MD-87-SE-DIF_web.jpg As with many other Aircraft Sub types i have no idea at all how to tell them apart or what kits there are of them. So i want to do all of these in 1/144. I know that Mincraft has released an MD-80, thats all it says on the box. So how do i tell what version of MD-80 is in the box. Also waht modifications on the MD-80 kit will i need to do? So i am pretty much asking what vrsion and how do i do it? Thanks Bradley.
