  4. Well I have been mulling this over for the past couple of days and I have finally decided to have a go at two builds (think that I must have caught Enzo fever) and as Col has requested it I'm going to do this little F.Mk.6. The decals look a bit basic but I think that I may be able find some suitable replacements on a Tornado sheet that I have, perhaps using markings from an F.3, and Mark1 do modern RAF code letters in both black and white. I'm not sure what it will be yet but maybe grey/natural metal would be a nice option. Anyway here is the box shot.
  5. Well having pondered long and hard over which kit from the three that I have available for this GB, in the end I have gone for this one. I haven't put a Sword kit together before but, from what I can gather from builds on here, whilst they require a bit more work they go together well. So for this one I am going to build it out of the box (no wise cracks from the back about not being able to build in the box) and we will see how things progress. Roll on next weekend, can't wait. The obligatory box shot. I'll use this as a reference but I expect there will be a wealth of other info from fellow builders that I will be able to use too. And who knows, if things are going really well I may also get the chance to do one of these two. using these for the Airfix kit Although I must admit to having made a start on the Pavla seat for the Airfix kit, but I think that it just about falls within the 25% rule. I made the following grab handle for the top of the seat.
  6. Lightning F.1A 56 Squadron ‘Firebirds’ RAF Wattisham 1963 When I heard about the new Sword Lightning F1 and F3 I thought I had better dig out those Trumpeter kits and do something with them or they would stay in the attic forever. So here is the result of a bit of work on the Trumpeter F.1A. I had heard so many bad things about this kit that I considered just throwing it away, but actually with not that much effort it can be made to look like a Lightning. There were only 3 main modifications which were a) replacing the exhausts with Aeroclub resin, sorting out the main undercarriage (shortened by 2.5 mm and doors twisted round to their right position) and c) bending the wings to remove that strange dihedral effect and trying to introduce a bit of droop. Admittedly it was almost impossible to introduce the characteristic kink in the leading edge (see the new Airfix kit) but my old Airfix and Hasegawa Lightnings don’t have that and they look OK to me. It was really nice to have a Firebirds Lightning back in my collection – my old Airfix one got refurbished as a Tigers F1 a few years ago. Decals were a combination of Model Alliance (nose bars and fin flash), Airfix decals from their new kit (roundels), kit decals (squadron badge on the fin and stencils) and Xtradecal (serial numbers and fin code).

  8. Despite an appalling 'no show' for the recent Harrier GB, I'm going to chuck my hat into the ring for this one. I'll be combining the new Sword 1/72 Lightning F.1 with Modeldecal sheet 78 to produce XM139 of Leuchars Target Facilities Flight in 1967. This will be my first ever BAC Lightning build as well, despite nearly 30 years modelling! Given my not very good completion rate for GB's and a glacial build speed, I make no promises regarding completion.... Since I have 2 days off, I'm away to make a start on this one, Regards, Mark.
  9. And another of my Lightning's finished. This time is the new T.5 by Sword built OTB apart from using some decals from the spares box as the LTF markings on the tail were too large and the roundels were the wrong sizes and way too bright. ScottC
  10. Hello all Here is my finished new tool Airfix 1/72 EE lightning F.6 Built as XS903 of 11 Sqn circa 1988 I built it straight out of the box bar modifying the Red Tops to drill rounds and decals from a old Modeldecal sheet. tried to replicate the grubby look to the aircraft as it reached the end of its service life. Enjoy :-)
  11. Here we have my build number 9 since re-addicting myself to this plastic hell. And by gumbo this fought me all the way. I'm still not sure who won this one. But why oh why do Trumpeter Lightning? I'm not knowledgeable about all the details, but even I could tell it wasn't particularly accurate with that the abomination that is its tail. So.. Yes.. WHY?! Well it had been a nice present from the girlfriend, so I did have to build it. With all the new kits coming out from Airfix an Sword I also thought I'd better get it out the way so it was done and ready to get dusty on the shelf. I decided not to fix all that could be reasonably fixed, but thought that surgery on the back end by fitting a better shaped resin part from Aires was good practice for me. What almost caught me was when I forgot to compensate for the added weight sitting that far back. I nearly had a tail sitter, but a dab of liquid gravity super glued into the nose cone saved the day. Oh, yes.. And more NMF practice for me.. As if the Mig 15 I'd done previously wasn't enough punishment. Finished off in a main covering of Alclad Aluminium, a few spots of polished aluminium, airframe aluminium and a dab of Tamiya titanium (which was a bit too subtle tbh). Some Model Alliance decals slapped on with the usual chemicals. All done with most of its inaccuracies intact. I didn't have any drawings so those fins are still the kit shape even though it's a simple fix. It has the air brakes open because after 7 rounds with it I couldn't face closing them up and dealing with any seams. I'm glad it's over... So let's just move straight on to my 'interpretation' of a Lightning F6. Please feel free to laugh at, commiserate or sympathise with another Trumpy Lightning builder. 12. Lockheed P-38J-5-LO, 42-67291, “Haleakala”, 459th FS, 80th FG, USAAF, Chittagong, India, 1944 Pilot: Lt. H.H. Sealy 1/72 model built using parts of Hasegawa and Dragon kits (done before the Academy kit became available) with some scratch building/reshaping. The only correctly shaped drop tanks I could find were borrowed from the Frog/Novo kit. Detail sets ( used completely or partially): Aires P-38J/L cockpit set, Eduard P-38J/L detail set, Squadron P-38 F(due to the early style windscreen on J-5) vacu canopy Decals: Aeromaster (all individual a/c markings were inaccurate and had to be corrected or replaced) Dragon/Italeri kit decals, Travers, Revell (P-51B) - for technical markings
  13. Lightnings at Coltishall, 1968 The RAF Coltishall Battle of Britain ‘At Home Day’ on 14th September 1968 was the first time I saw a Lightning F.6. In those days we only 24 black & white photos for the whole day (I was 17 and pocket money had to go a long way). There was XR763/G of 23 Sqn from Leuchars still fitted with overwing tanks and a Union Jack on the fin from a recent visit to Canada. It was worth at least 2 valuable photos. Alongside it were parked T.5 XS420 of the Coltishall based 226 OCU / 145 Sqn and (amazingly for me at the time as I knew nothing about Saudi training at Coltishall until I got there) T.55 55-714/D. These are 4 of the photos I took on that day: 45 years later I have been able to add all three of these to my 1/72 Lightning collection. I’ve posted the trainers before, but I’ve only recently finished XR763 so here are some shots of this one by itself before all three together. This is from the old Frog / Hasegawa kit with scratch built Red Tops.
  14. Having seen Reheat and Paul J's lovely builds of this kit I was inspired to get cracking on mine! I thought I would do a WIP and see what wrinkles there were to iron out, if any. Hopefully it may help anyone else building it as it seems to have sold like hot cakes, so there must be hundreds out there! First thing was a lack of any firm method to hold the cockpit tub in place, so a few strips of plasticard sorted that out, glued on to the very thin marks in the fuselage sides. They won't interfere with the nose bullet, and shouldn't be visible when finished. For a T4 you need to shorten the cable ducts, though this is not mentioned in the instructions. The drawings on the plans show it though. Careful work with a blade removes them, with a final sanding and a little bit of rescribe. They are fine for a T5 though, and can be left alone. Main interior components were assembled, primed, and painted in base colours. The ledges are not so obvious when painted; The seats have an awful lot of pre-painted etch brass to go on them, and look quite nice; Tub made up; Nice pre-painted instrument panel too. Apparently this is not quite accurate for a T4, bieing a T5 panel. I'm not too concerned though, my T4 will be buttoned up with the canopy closed. I thought a bit of nose weight would be advisable. I cyano in a pebble. (My neighbor has put a load of these in the strip of land between our driveways, all sorts of shapes & sizes! Little does he know how useful they are). I needed to trim the front edge of the cockpit sides to get the instrument panel to fit, you can see where I have removed the black paint. Nice easy fit of the tub, it won't even need to be glued. It does close up at the front better than shown here. Then the wings. There are som ejector pin towers that need shaving off, or they will interfere with the fit of the wing halves. Top, not removed, lower trimmed off. Pretty happy with it all so far, I've got a T5 on the go alongside it! Thanks for looking, John
  15. On Sunday 25th I visited Bruntingthorpe airfield near Leicester - for one of their 'Cold War Jets' events. This is when they fire up the jets and do fast taxy runs down the runway. The sight and sound of an English Electric Lightning F.6 in full reheat just yards away is something I shall never forget!! A few of my photos from the day... Lots more photos here Ken
  16. Has anyone ever produced decals for the early batch of prototype Lightnings. I'm specifically interested in T.4 XL628 with the light blue nose/flash and Lightning script & XG329. I am aware of the Whirlykits resin kit which does have decals for XL628, but that's now very hard to find & I'm not keen on working with resin. Just wondering. Martin
  17. Just read in latest SAMI that Sword are producing Lightning T.4 and Lightning T.5 in their 2014 schedule. Very good news indeed Derek
  18. Turned Brass Aircraft Barrels/Probes 1:48 Master Models We've received another batch of these superb items for Mast Models. Their reputation continues to grow with some of the best turned components you can buy. They are all packaged in the standard small flat packs with card headers which help protect the components. Inside the parts are all in separate bags with an overturned flap to keep them from falling out, although the probes are so sharp I'm surprised the hadn't pierced their way through. The Kfir set, designed for the Kinetic kits, has two very finely turned probes included. The pitot probe with its characteristic bulge near the tip is so fine in the waist that it looks like it could snap, and would do if it wasn't made of brass, just drill out a 0.8mm hole to fit. The AoA probe is just an amazing piece of turning, just drill a 0.5mm hole and fit, just be carefully it doesn't ping out of the tweezers as the carpet monster will love this. The Lightning set, designed for the Airfix kit just includes the fabulously turned, and blooming sharp pitot probe. Don't have this at head height as it will have someones eye out. Again drill a 0.8mm hole to fit. Whereas the Lightning probe is long and slender, this item for the Revell Hustler is a bit of a brute in comparison, yet through deft turning it still transitions down to a very fine point. You will need to open the hole up using a 1mm drill bit to fit this baby, and again don't display at head height if not in an enclosed cabinet. Lastly, this set is to replace the cannon barrel covers/barrels on the Eduard Spitfire IXc. Beautifully detailed from tip to base this should fit directly without opening up the attachment hole. Conclusion For a simple and quick way to upgrade the detail on your kits, these really are the only way to go. The finesse on the turning is amazing, I would love to see the machines the use. The probes though are very sharp and I cannot stress enough to be aware of this and take appropriate precautions, particularly if you have children. Very highly recommended. 20. Hi, Please can anyone tell me more about the yellow bird, and I assume cat, on these Lightnings. Thanks, Mike.
  21. Lightning F.6 11 Sqn RAF Binbrook 1976 Yes, I know I should have just got on with that new Airfix Lightning, but this one had been in the pending pile for so many years that I just had to finish it. This is the Hasegawa / Frog / Revell F6 kit which I rescribed. I also fitted a new forward belly tank with guns so that I could use the big 11 Sqn fin badge from the Xtradecal sheet which was designed for F3s. Probably like most of us I have a few more Frog F6 kits in the attic and even though Airfix have now surpassed those old kits (thankyou, thankyou, thankyou Airfix) I'm sure I will still use a few from time to time because they are just pure nostalgia! XR773 / D was in the static park at the 1976 IAT at Greenham Common so I used one of my old slides to finish it. Alclad over polished Halfords grey primer (polished with toothpaste and elbow grease) and then a few brushed coats of Klear to give that grey / aluminium look and to ensure the decals went down well
  22. Hi everybody as I'm new here I thought I'd show some of the models I am particularlly pleased with from my 100+ collection. The Jaguar I just finished tho still cant get a straight yellow band around the bombs! And the A319 before the Jag (lesson learned with the A319 dont use aircraft paint on plastic it peels off) Anyway please look and comment, my next Build is the Airfix 1/48 Lynx HMA8 Roundals and fin flash on the Mustang had to be painted by hand due to decal disintigrating. And now my personal favourite

  25. As a small boy my first memories of model kits were the Airfix ones bought from Woolworths during the late 70s and in particular a Lightning my father made with me that got painted overall red. Leap forward 30-odd years (yikes!) and I'm looking at some Lightning profiles and start to wonder where the idea for smothering the poor thing in thick red paint had come from. At first I supposed the kit had featured a 56 Sqn. Firebirds scheme but a look on Scalemates.com only shows a 111 Sqn scheme for it over several releases both before and after 1978. I'm near certain it wasn't the Frog or Matchbox F.6 but even then there's no mention of a likely scheme in either of those kits. So anyone know of a EE Lightning kit from the late 70s that would have featured a red-tailed decal option?
