  1. Hello out there. Can you help? I have some old but still workable decals from Aeromaster (sheet 72-003) and I want to use them to construct a model of Bf109E-4B/B W.Nr. 5901 (7 + I) that was supposed to have crashed in Kent on 2nd October 1940. I will be using one of the AZ 'joy-pack' kits I got recently. It's the red cowling band that attracts as something a bit different ! The decal info sheet says that the aircraft was in 70/71/65 camouflage, or it may have been 74/75/65. What was it, as it was in that transition stage between schemes and Autumn ? So, any sage advice or definite knowledge ? I'm tempted to go with a transitional 74/75/65 scheme as it seems right for a tip-and-run fighter bomber in October. My Interweb searches have left me with nothing certain, other than some modellers have already had a go at the aircraft with varying degrees of success. FatFlyHalf
  2. Bf 109G-4 R6 Trop Oblt Frank Schiehs CO 8/ JG 53 Tindja, Tunisia April 1943 After a hiatus post the Battle of Britain GB thanks to a combination of family and work commitments, I’m hoping to get back in to the GB groove! Now bottom line upfront.... I know absolutely zip about the 109, so I’ll be reliant on Eduard’s research, t’interweb and fellow BM’ers! This 109 (potentially the first of a few!) is an Eduard weekend boxing and I’ve chosen the desert scheme, partly because I think they look cool, but mainly because I’m a little nervous about mottling for my first one for this GB so applied the ‘Keep it simple, stupid’ rule! On to the line of departure.... This will be pretty much straight from the box - although I have a cockpit mask (for a G-6) and an instrument panel and belts (for a G-10). Hopefully those will be ok (close enough for Government work) but if I’m about to set myself up for a drama please do let me know and I’ll see if I can find the appropriate variant extras.
  3. Having just finished my 109F, I was inspired to to build a stablemate. A little trawl found this likely candidate: Apparently it may have been a white 7 not a yellow, this is fortuitous as I happen to have some spare white Luftwaffe "7"s. There is a fascinating story re JG53's red band and Mr Goering that is well documented. It seems they even flew without swastikas at one point, perhaps I'll use artistic license for that one. The camo looks interesting, , RLM70/02 but with the splinter seemingly oversprayed. Have just received my Badger Sotar 20/20 (still unopened sadly and in pile of other ebay/amazon detritus) so will be using that for freehand camo. Again artistic license not historical accuracy will be the order of the day. To the kit, the venerable Airfix 109E4 that we seem to love and hate : Mine came with the odd soft on detail one side, of no concern to me It also came with this super annoying ejector pin mark prominently in the 'pit, which did concern me and was dispatched with Mr Surfacer 500 Decided to mod the crappy seat by removing the belts with my nail salon grinder and then making a slot for the seat belts: Great fun using all my weird and wonderful tools, finally flooded with some Mr Hobby Liquid Cement to smooth out and its off to the paint shop tomorrow when its all dry
  4. Hello, and thanks for your interest in this topic. Here's my rendition of AZ Model's latest release of the 109 Series - this is the G-14AS. As far as I am aware this type has never been available as an injection molded kit before. I added Brengun phot-etch for various details, such as antennas, flaps and interior pieces. The pitot tube is from Master Models. The model was painted with Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylics. This patricular aircraft is well documented. There are a number of period photographs. Some of the technical details visible are: - missing cover of the tail wheel well - T3 rudder without trim tabs (these were removed from the plastic) The aircraft patricipated in "Operation Bodenplatte" in January 1945. Piloted by Uffz. Herbert Maxis, White 13 was shot down by an American AA battery. Herbert Maxis' tragic faith is documented here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=97812831 "White 13" was buried in a trench and re-discovered in 1987. The remaining parts of the airframe were restored with parts from other German aircraft and is currently on display in the AVIATICUM Museum in Wiener Neustadt, Lower Austria. Creating the characteristic "sawtooth pattern" on the leading edges of the wings is quite a challenge, in this scale. The rudder has some light colored blotches over the RLM75/83 camoflage. To replicate this, I painted the entire rudder RLM76 (Light Blue) first. Then, small pieces of Blu Tac were applied to cover those places to remain in light color. Then, the other colors were sprayed over. The fuselage has a different tone of RLM76. This seems to be the greenish variant, sometimes referred to as "RLM84". This color was mixed using RLM02 (Grey/Green) and pure White. The undersides are natural metal, I used Alclad paints here. Note the black Balkenkreuze without outlines. All photographs: Wolfgang Rabel, IGM Cars & Bikes Vienna. Thanks for lookin'! Have a good day! Roman
  5. One of the most colorful fighter squadron of German Luftwaffe was the "Jagdgeschwader 53". I have built some models from these with many work and effort. The color layout only decides in the end, even if the kit is very old or has lower quality. Some few months ago I was looking in my - actually from 23 volumes consisting (Die Deustche Jagdfliegerverbände" - and found in the part II (Sitzkrieg") "phoney war" an interesting template. It was a Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4, yellow "1" of 3. / JG 53 from OLtn. Wolfgang Lippert. On 23 November 1941, OLtn. Lippert baling out of his stricken aircraft, he broke both his legs when he struck the vertical stabiliser. He was captured and taken to a hospital. He died from an embolism after the operation without regaining consciousness. Wolfgang Lippert was credited with 30 victories. basic kit is from Hasegawa - a very old Bf 109E kit Decals from my private decal collection box corlor AGAMA/ XTRA Color changed parts: new position light on the wings (left/ rigth) new antenna wire and new aerial mast control cable rudder spindle vertical stabilizer the foto template my paper template in scale 1:48 Rollout:
  6. In the last years I have built many models Bf 109 in scale 48. This is now my first speed-building. I found by clean up my office a Hasegawa kit. It is very old - from the 88ger years of the last century. So I decided to quick assemble this kit and make a extraordinary eyecatcher camouflage. In the collection "Jagdfliegerverbände der Deutsche Luftwaffe" Volume two I found this template for my kit. The JG53 is known for exceptionally camouflage in this time. Here ist my kit template: I reconstructed with help of images from other machines in this fighter squadron in exactly this period, the complete camouflage. This is my result in sclae 48: And this result is also too my airbrush template for my kit. This Bf 109E-4 has had a basic camouflage from 1940 in RLM65/02/71, modified with RLM70 and a mixing from RLM02 and 65 for wing upperside and fintail. This is a good eye catcher!
  7. Hello and thanks for your interest. This is another AZ Model Bf-109 from my workbench, The markings represent the mount of Gefr. Alfred Michels of 16/JG53, who crash-landed this plane behind American lines on January 1, 1945. A number of pictures of this machine exist on the internet - an interesting feature is the placement of 'Blue 2' which sits upon a patch of colour where a previous number had been overpainted. The "Blue 2" is on the second fuselage segment behind the cockpit, on the left; It's on the first fuselage segment behind the cockpit, to the right. The number itself seems very pale or weathered. Therefore, I misted the "2" and the Gruppen-Balken with grey paint while still on the decal sheet - not my best idea. While it worked well on the number itself, it left traces around the Gruppen-Balken where I failed to eliminate the carrier film. It seems as if a squadron badge had been overpainted on the cowling. The model was painted with Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylics in RLM 74/75/76. Weathering was done with artist's oils. I added Brengun photo-etch to enhance some details like cockpit, flaps, antennas. The canopy is a vacu item from Rob Taurus. Thanks for your interest! Cheers from Vienna, in the pouring rain.
