  1. Hello all. This is just a place holder at the moment as I have a couple of other builds on the go at the moment. Over the last few months (well, lockdown really!), I have got to like building 1/144 scale aircraft. Some time ago, I did a VC10 C.Mk1K (ish) where I selectively modified the Airfix tanker to a different version. I have always liked the VC-10, especially as I had been in one in 1970 on my return from Singapore. I have known for a long time that a then Soviet aircraft was very much like a copy of the VC-10, so when Zvezda issued their IL-62M, I just had to have it. It has been in the stash since it was issued, and this gives me the ideal opportunity to build it. It was boxed very nicely, a sleeve with the artwork and a very sturdy inner box with the goodies: The transfer sheet was too big for the box, thankfully they did not fold it, but it is not far off! I will be doing the one with the orange/blue cheatline rather than the Aeroflot ones. I am looking forward to this one starting in a week's time. Good luck everyone, Ray
  2. The ICM IL-62M has been overshadowed by the Zvezda kit and never really had the attention it deserves. The few reviews I’ve seen have tended to be dismissive, along the lines of “they won’t sell any with the Zvezda kit on the market”. Well, I’m probably a minority of one but the dropped flaps and general complexity of the Zvezda kit put me off and when I noticed an ICM kit on Ebay at an attractive price I decided to give it a shot. I’m very glad I did. Despite the gigantic box in which it arrived, it turned out to be a simple, straightforward, old-school kit with the relatively few parts moulded in robust, flash-free white plastic and not a dropped flap in sight (hallelujah!). It assembled easily without any serious problems at all. Nobody will claim the detail is up to Zvezda’s standards - the panel lines are a little heavy and you have to box in the main wheel wells for example - but it was a model I really enjoyed building. ICM haven’t quite got the nose right - there is a rather IL-18-ish step between the radome and the windscreen but that is easily fixed with some Milliput. The only other obvious error is that the doors on the right side of the fuselage are wrongly moulded as a mirror image of the left and some filling and rescribing is needed. In itself that’s not a big deal but unfortunately the mistake is replicated on the otherwise decent kit decal sheet which can’t be used to produce a properly accurate model. The Interflug decals are by Liveries Unlimited. Although intended for the Zvezda kit, they are a good fit on the ICM model. The only issue I had was that the red had an irritating tendency to flake, particularly on the fin and rudder, leading to a bit of patching and touching up. It was annoying rather than serious but not what you expect from decals bearing the Liveries Unlimited name. Unfortunately they include very few detail decals, the idea presumably being to take them from the Zvezda sheet which isn’t a lot of use to those of us not building the Zvezda kit! The instructions, which have to be downloaded separately from the Fundekals website, are a masterclass in the myriad livery variations carried by Interflug’s IL-62s and 62Ms. Apparently DM-SEL was originally one of the VIP aircraft operated in civilian colours by the Luftstreitkräfte which may explain the grey radome rather than the more common white. The final touch was a set of Authentic Airliners’ sublime window decals. Overall this was an easy, fun project and I hope you like the final result. I have bought another ICM IL-62M for the stash and a set of Air Koryo decals to go with it. 4. When Zvezda has revealed their plans to release Il-62M in 2013 the value of RusAir resin kit started to diminish. Therefore I got the box from my loft and decided to join this group build before this kit is completely of of season The kit consists of a dozen finely casted high quality resin parts - no sign of bubbles and very little flash There are several decal options, I've chosen "Aeroflot - Official Olympic Carrier" of Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. Four massive engines make the model quite a tail sitter First operation complete - closed the fuselage halves. Applied some Mr. Resin Surfacer to reveal seam problems
