  1. Hi folks, picked up this boxing yesterday at the Northern model show, not my scale at all but for £30 I could not let this one pass. I have never built this kit it has always had legendary status for me as a kit I could not afford growing up and a scale that did not interest me when I could afford it,as you can see it,s big but maybe because it,s a few years old the mouldings are crisp and the decals look very usable,as soon as I finish my Canberra I will be making a start but it might be a long build,so hope a few of you will come on the journey with me!somewhere on the table is one of my 1/72 hurricanes just to show the size of the beast.
  2. This is the Airfix Club Sea Hurricane XII built as Hurricane IIb Z5659, flown by W.J.Storey of 135 Squadron. Flying this aircraft, he was credited with two Ki-27s of the 77th Sentai shot down and two more probable on the 6th of February 1942 over Mingaladon. Having read the Osprey book on Hurricane Aces 1941-1945, I wanted to build a few aces' Hurricanes. After getting this kit from Graham77 on the forum back in June, I planned to build Storey's Hurricane since the decals could be scrounged from generic serial and roundel/fin flash sheets. The fit of the IIb wing to the fuselage was worse than I remembered for the IIc wing, but otherwise the build was painless. I scratchbuilt some interior detail (which can't be seen now) and added the outer wing gun barrels from spares. I painted this in Lifecolour Dark Green and Dark Earth over Sky Blue following a tip from Nick Millman on the underside colour, using Humbrol 56 as a primer. This also made paint chipping easy. The squadron codes are from a Modeldecal sheet, the roundels from Almark sheets, the serials from a Ventura sheet and the fin flashes from the Xtradecals Hurricane IIc sheet. I realise went a bit overboard with the exhaust staining, but otherwise I'm satisfied with the model. P.S. if the panel lines look shiny or like I overdid the paint chipping, it's because it's gloss varnish catching the light. The deep panel lines meant that the matt varnish always accumulated in the. After three tries I just left the panel lines glossed. Thanks for looking!
  3. I am kind of new here And don't really know how to start - this post that is. Well, like many, I made my last kit around 30 plus years ago and I feel like making some kits again. But boy did thing change over 30 years! Not only are the kits so much more detailed, but there is such a large choice of stuff to build them! That goes from glue to filler to paint and much more. I did a lot of reading to see what is the best stuff to use and I quickly learned that the BEST stuff doesn't exist as people have a wide range of preferences. So I have to do it the hard way and find out by myself. So I thought it is maybe helpful showing my first build here in the hope to get some feedback and more important, some tips - and encouragement if things turn sour. As the heading says, I like to build the Classic Airframes 1/48 Fabric Wings Hawker Hurricane L1599 in the markings from Squadron Leader John Gillan, using the kit decals together with CMK five spoked wheels and the Aires Wheel Bay for the Hasegawa kit (of which the Classic Airframes kit is based on). This won't be an OOB build as I like to correct some of the errors with the Classic Airframes kit, of which several had been copied from the Hasegawa kit. But in addition, the wing is too short and the landing lights are at the wrong spot which I hope to correct too. No shortage in reference material. But nonetheless, I am sure that I will have lots of questions during the build of the kit. Unfortunately I have limited time, so my build won't be fast - so I better get started. Cheers, Peter
  4. Hi folks,as the title suggests this machine was apparently based there in 1940,it only exists as a profile I have in an old issue of MAI.an earlier thread I started failed to bring forth anything about it,however our resident team of Hurricane experts did suggest that it,s serial would suggest a fabric winged model.I think it may have been used in calibration flights,I just loved the yellow undersides! Airfix,s lovely new tool kit used.many thanks for looking.
  5. Hello All, I remember taking this kit out of the box, thinning the trailing edges (from the inside) and putting in the navigation lights - then the next thing I knew, it was finished!! I must have shaken the box with some glue in it... This is simply an amazing kit. I love the undercarriage. In addition to the changes above, I added seat belts and the aerial wires, otherwise it's OOB with hardly any filler. There are no in progress pics because it was that quick! It's all brush painted with Humbrol acrylics, decals straight over the paint with the new Humbrol decal softener, and a final coat of Liquitex matt varnish. Thanks for looking, Adrian
  6. Were the roundels on pre-war Hurricanes in bright or dull read and blue? According to an article in Model Aircraft Monthly November 2005 covering early Hurricanes, it says "An RAE Note on Camouflage Painting of Aircraft dated 19 March 1936 gives the revised form of roundels as being Yellow, Dull Blue, White and Dull red..." Is it known if Hawker used the new dull colours or kept using the bright colours? I am asking because the roundels on the Xtradecal X72193 covering Fabric Wing Hurricanes has all roundels in the bright colours. Is this correct? Interestingly, the new Xtradecal sheet on the Blenheim has all roundels in the dull colours. Any insights are much appreciated. Cheers, Peter
  7. I bought this sheet http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X72193 for some Airfix fabric wing Hurricane builds as there are some great schemes on this sheet. The instruction sheet lists references for each scheme. This is a great idea as like to have a picture of the aircraft I model. unfortunately some mentioned references are a bit cryptic. Several schemes have references to "F.Sqns" followed by a page number (119, 141, 183, 288) Does anyone know what book that is? In regards to the decals, all roundels are printed with a bright red looking like pre-war roundels. Is this correct for fabric wing Hurricanes? I red that Gloster kept using the pre-war roundel colours for some time on their built Hurricanes, but I would have thought that the early fabric wing Hurricanes were Hawker built. Did they use the brighter colours for the roundels as well? Some insights would be much appreciated. Cheers, Peter
  8. Good afternoon, This is Airfix's new tooling of the early Mk.I Hurricane. During the painting of this plane I learned something quite important: Vallejo's Dark Earth is too dark, but I left it anyway. Paints were Model Master RAF Dark Green enamel, the afore mention Vallejo Dark Earth, Humbrol Gloss Black and White enamel, and a 50/50 mix of silver and white Humbrol enamel. All comment welcome.
  9. Good afternoon, On the painting instructions of Airfix's new Hurricane, it labels the centre underside as aluminium. On the real aircraft, would this be the same aluminium paint used on inter-war RAF biplanes? If so, would 50/50 mix of white and silver suffice? Thanks in advance.
  10. Hi folks, third entry and back to my Hurricane obsession, the often criticized newish tool Hurricane.I have no mid war or SEAC scheme in my collection in fact i have never built a SEAC finished aircraft of any type so may lean towards that.the kit is mostly off the sprue, but it is reviewed elsewhere on this site,I have built this kit in it,s royal navy scheme as can be seen.
  11. Hurricane Mk.I Control Surfaces. 1:72 Aires Given the new Hurricane models from Airfix it was only a matter of time before the aftermarket manufactures got in on the game. Like a lot of smaller models the Airfix Hurricane has the rear control surfaces moulded in one position. The Aires parts allow you to re-position the tail control surfaces. The non-moving part features the same tab as the Airfix kit and should then slot straight in. The modeller can then position the movable parts as they wish. Conclusion This is a nice set which will enhance your model and is a near enough drop fit for the Airfix Parts. The fabric surface is represented very well and the casting has no flaws at all. Very highly recommended for your Airfix Kit. Review samples courtesy of distributed in the UK by Hannants Ltd.
  12. Hawker Hurricane Mk.XII, pics thanks to Mark Mills. Delivered to RCAF as 5589, now marked as BE417. Delivered to RCAF as 5711, now marked as Z5140.
  13. Quick one, are any of the Hurricanes on this sheet "rag" wings? Cheers in advance Dek.
  14. Free on the cover of SAMI this month - 2 mins of hard graft and it's ready for primer! Thanks for watching!
  15. Here are some pictures of my latest build: the new Airfix Hurricane I, done up to represent RF-O of 303 Squadron, L2099, flown by Josef Frantisek on 30 September 1940. While L2099 was originally a fabric-winged Hurricane, I was unable to find out if it had been refitted with metal wings. Exercising further artistic license I built it with the three-bladed propeller provider by Airfix (I had no intention of assembling the individual-blade propeller from AZ Models/Sword, which gave me the decals, since I had recently built two planes with contra-rotating propellers), the fish-tail exhausts and canvas patches over the guns (photos of 303 Squadron Hurricanes didn't make it clear if they had them). The positioning of the code letters and serial number on the starboard side is pure conjecture, as the AZ Models kit provided the profile for only one side. The plane was mostly built over Easter break. I had some problems with the wings and should have thinned their leading edges a bit, and the tailwheel was not interested in staying on. The kit was brush-painted with Humbrol enamels (116/29 over 90); this is the last time I will use Humbrol 116 for RAF Dark Green, as it took a ridiculously long time to dry. As mentioned earlier, the decals came from the AZ Models' 'Aces' reboxing of the Sword Hurricane I. I had to replace the squadron code letters with generic letters (though with a different typeface) from a Modeldecals sheet. I gave the underside a wet T-shirt contest panel line wash with Humbrol 240 and the top side one with Humbrol 98. I chose these colours so that they wouldn't give the panel lines too much a contrast, which worked well enough for the underside. The various stains and paint chipping were done using Humbrol black and grey and Citadel Runefang steel. The weather was a bit cloudy while I was taking pictures, and this messed up the lighting in some of the photos. Thanks for looking. Comments are welcome!
  16. Hi folks, after a good number of pre and early war Hurricanes I thought it time to move on in time and colours with my builds. this is Revells MK2 from their British Icons set and the first time I have built one and very nice they are, only gripe is the wing construction method but otherwise looks like a Hurricane to me.Thanks for your time.
  17. Hawker Hurricane Mk.IV KZ321, pics thank to Mark Mills. While built as a MKIV, the current configuration is basically a MkIIC, with the 4 cannon wings and unarmoured radiator
  18. Hi folks, second Hurricane of the day.Revells mkII in desert colours, same comments as earlier post as far as construction is concerned overall a nice little build experience, thanks for taking the time to look.

Thanks Colin
  20. Built for the "Less than a tenner" group build. Build thread.
  21. Build 16 Having already built one of these, (in fictional night fighter colours) I've decided to build another as Stanford Tuck's V6555. The fuselage markings and underwing roundels are from Sweet's Battle of Britain Hurricane set, the upper roundels are by Mark 1 Decals (I have a few sets from them) and the rest are from the spares box. This will be a quick build and I'll be doing updates as I go... Price: £2.99 from Antics.
  22. Hi folks, hoping I can find some help here on the above listed subject matter. I'm trying to figure out the following for this particular airframe: what type of prop? (two blade or three blade?) what type of wing? (fabric or metal) Based on current research I have found the following info on the airframe: first date: 2 March 1939 - Taken on charge at RCAF Station Sea Island, BC Ex RAF L1762. Shipped to Vancouver. Used by A Flight, No. 1 (F) Squadron, at RCAF Station Sea Island, BC. To No. 3 Repair Depot, Vancouver on 6 June 1939. To Western Air Command 1 April 1940. Sent to UK with No. 1 (F) Squadron in 1940, coded "YO*L". Returned to RAF shortly after, but retained RCAF serial number. Operated by No. 6 (later No. 56) OTU, RAF, late 1940 / early 1941 via Bill Walker's site. I would like to build one of the new Airfix kits but if this airframe was not fabric winged then I'm looking for another Canadian subject. Also if the airframe was fabric winged I am trying to figure out whether three or two bladed prop would be appropriate. I would like to build the airframe as it was after it returned back to the UK from Canuckland Cheers, Dave
  23. Hi folks, hope I can get help on this one,I have seen a scheme in an old issue of MAI of a Hurricane mk1 based at the central flying school Upavon in 1940,it is in dark earth/dark green with yellow undersides serial L1873.Can anyone confirm if it was a metal wing machine? I think I can reproduce the markings from spares but need a clue as to the kit to base it on cheers Steve.
  24. I am currently working on one of the recent Mk.1 Hurricane's from Airfix (the 111 Squadron/Belgium box)and finishing it as SD-A, L2039 in the colours of 501 Squadron Featured on Xtradecal set 72193, from May 1939 as per this photo-> (http://www.asisbiz.com/il2/Hurricane/RAF-501Sqn-SD/pages/Hurricane-MkI-RAF-501Sqn-SD-A-L2039-Montagu-Clube-crash-landing-Tangmere-1st-May-1939.html)and was hoping for some guidence regarding some of the details, in particular, would the prop be the 2 blade or 3 blade type?(looking at the discarded hub I'm thinking 3), would the red doped patches on the wing l/e be in use around May 1939 or was that a later feature? would the engine exausts be the earlier or later type featured in the kit? & am I correct in thinking that the roundels on the upper wings would be 'B' type(after the Munich crisis September 1938)? Progress so far http://i.imgur.com/iSCqQ8V.jpg Any advice greatly appreciated Cheers Vincent
