  1. The Hobby Boss A-6E Intruder is no stranger around here, and various inspiring builds have finally pushed me to start a second attempt on this aircraft after a too short fling with a Hasegawa kit in my childhood days. IMO the (street) price to quality ratio of the Hobby Boss kit is hard to beat; it has been thoroughly commented on, so I will try not to babble and only highlight some selected aspects of the build. The only extras I plan to add are the pilots. Since I almost exclusively build my planes gear up, I have a constant need for personnel. I made molds of some Hasegawa and Tamiya pilots and now have a clone army at my disposal. Regarding the construction, I followed the advice to glue the radome halves to the fuselage halves to have a proper fit at this critical seam. I also left off the coaming when installing the cockpit, as it would go between the fuselage halves, resulting in a too wide body when you put on the canopy. The overall fit of the kit is quilte good, but of course the gear up mode comes with some punishment. I was able to carefully cut the front MLG doors to fit them into the openings, but still there were a lot of gaps to close. Even more putty action after installing the intakes. The instructions don't seem to mention that you can use the included spars to join the wings. And so it's starting to look like an Intruder.
  2. Combining my current dual interests of jets and captured aircraft, my next project is this Me 262. I’ll be using the Hobby Boss kit in 1/48 scale and will be building it out of the box with no aftermarket except seatbelts (because I just don’t like making them ). I chose this one as it has the Air Min number clearly painted on the fuselage (though it was later painted over) and the paint will include some bare metal on the engine nacelles. The kit itself has decent reviews. It is apparently a scaled down version of HB’s 1/32 kit. It has some odd parts breakdown choices where for example a lot of fuselage internal equipment is provided but will be next to impossible to see through the separate hatchway provided. I’m not going to use that. Unfortunately, unlike the larger kit the flaps are not separate which is a shame as it was common to see parked 262’s with flaps down. I may or may not attempt to separate them - if I do I shall channel @marvinneko’s epic work on his Ventura for inspiration. Assembly begins with the cockpit and I followed my usual process on it - dark base, dry brush, detail painting, finish coat, and then clear gloss in the instrumentation. Luftwaffe cockpits have the distinct advantage of being dark grey which hides a multitude of lazy choices. As I used no aftermarket everything is painted to create impression rather than replication though I did try and get the colours right on the instruments’ bezels, levers and switches. I still have to add the seatbelts which are going to be donated from an Eduard Fw190D kit in the stash. As I’m not opening any panels (the kit also provides some nice detail for the guns and an option to have them exposed) I anticipate things will move relatively swiftly to major assembly. I’ll have more to say about markings and paint later. Cheers.
  3. Hi Guys , Using HobbyBoss TA -7C For this More to follow cheers wellzy .
  4. Following along my Dora build, my next build is Hobby Boss 1/48 TA-152 C-1 This will be another (I hope) OBB. so we'll see. Now on to the cockpit!
  5. I know, it's not like I don't have two VERY big projects already on the bench, but here we go once more into the breech. Although it is another Northrop subject. Number 3 on the bench. But this will be a nice little diversion that SHOULD be OOB. Simple and easy to break the monotony of these long builds. Let's see what we've got shall we?
  6. Hi all. Some years ago as a flight attendant I went to visit in South Africa the outstanding war Museum in Johannesburg. There are many unique pieces of military exposed, and among them the only survivor of the all weather Luftwaffe fighter, the Me 262B-1a/U1, red 8 of the 10 NJG/11. I did spend a long time around that bird, filling my eyes with this important witness of aviation history. Next to te Me262 there is also a genuine FW-190 A6. So with the good Hobby Boss model, the great Eduard photo etch and wheels from Brasin, I went ahead. The model was finished long before the Arado which I posted earlier but some goodies were slow in reaching my mail box and that's why I had to face some delays. The FuG 218 Neptune radar antennas are from Master. The small red 9 should be white shouldered, but despite my best efforts with the Silhouette, I could not get it right. Colors are Mr Color lacquers, all markings are painted.I just realize that the plane in Johanesburg is 11306 and is red 8, while mine, was scrapped at the end of the war! Sorry for the confusion! Thanks for looking, bye for now. 00AF0213-7871-4E16-89EB-6BBC8CF8C2F9_1_201_a by jean Barby, sur Flickr 39C5712B-55DA-41B3-9B4E-E1AD7BDDE2D5_1_201_a by jean Barby, sur Flickr 4832DDF3-0AF9-4E37-98CA-140872E4ED49_1_201_a by jean Barby, sur Flickr 03DA7A3A-7520-4AC5-912D-DC42AEE8557A_1_201_a by jean Barby, sur Flickr 09FB6CF6-0F88-4FCE-9E8F-34E70C6825DB_1_201_a by jean Barby, sur Flickr D11EF63C-2256-45B1-9452-FBB999B01F51_1_201_a by jean Barby, sur Flickr
  7. Okie, Here is my Kuwaiti Hornet. I fell pretty hard for their particular scheme It is built OOB, thus a closed canopy. The model felt as a copy of the Hasegawa Hornet with some strategically differences as not to be called a copy Anyway, it went together nicely and without too much putty. The photography went so so and the pictures are pretty dark, lightly edited in PS Bridge.... hadn't got around to Lightroom yet in those days. Here are the pics however Cheers!
  8. Let's get that dirty northern russian Flanker onstage then Rather happy with how the Flanker turned out..of course there are small issues here and there but on the whole I´m pleased. It got me a Brons at C4 at Malmö so I guess others like it too ( it didn´t get squat here in gothenburg in september ... guess they didn´t like it 😜 ) 😛 It was a very pleasing build, it went together nicely and the small incorrections in the kit itself were survivable. I added a wee bit of aftermarket to it like engines, bang seat, pitot tube and static dischargers (that seem to fall off all over the place), wheels and nice decals from Linden hill. I tried both MRP and AKAN paints for the first time and I like both...tho I think i fell in love with MRP 😛 Anyways here are loads of lovely pictures 😄 Cheers!
  9. Yeah, i'm a kind of "Tornadaholic"! I'm already building a Tonka for the "a kit you built as a kid" GB, now it's time to double the trouble. This is my new poject: a Saudi Gr.1 using the Hobby Boss kit. I know is not the best game in town, but i have this kit in my stash and it's time to build it. With a little help from sme resin bits: aires whell bays and airbrakes, master pitot tube, resim wheels. I'm waiting for eduard's Boz and Sky Shadow and a Print Scale decals sheet to make a saudi aircraft I will use also some parts from an aborted Revell building: in detail, the tailerons, the bulged under-belly pylons and the Hindemburg fuel tanks I would like to replicate this configurations, with eight bombs and the dual bomb racks: does anyone have this spare parts to sell me from an airfix kit? (especially the bomb dispenser). Obviously, due the bad times we're living, there is no rush. Source: d-storm.eu, Hope to start soon and post some updates ciao Ale
  10. The A6 Intruder is one of my all time favourites. When I found the camoflage scheme that the VA-165 Boomers trialed in the 1980's , it was a done deal. The scheme and decals were produced by Fighter town and I managed to source a set of these out of production sets. Using the fantastic Hobby Boss A6E release along with a resin cockpit from Wolfpack I used my Silhouette Cameo 3 cutter to reproduce the markings in a mask format to make this iconic aircraft.
  11. Hi Guys, I have changed my mind and want's to do a different build over here instead of the Wildcat mk V. I have a Hobby Boss 1/48 Grumman F-6F-5N in my stash and after seeing a article over here that the FAA also flew some of those. I wanted to build one. I have got no direct decals for this, but luckely I have a set from SAM for FAA markings. This will be helpfull to do my own markings. It will be build straight out of the box with only the adition of decals and some seatbelts from MDC. Here are the pictures of the box content. Cheers,
  12. Hi All, First off the bench in 2013 is my attempt at the Hobby Boss 1/48 Grumman Wildcat - the early F4F-3 version. I chose this because I wanted to have a go at some pre-war US colours. I seem to have used a lot of brown, green and grey recently so it was a nice break to introduce some colour to things. My WIP thread is here WIP and, overall, I really enjoyed building this kit and can recommend it. Not quite add glue and shake it, a la Tamigawa but nice to build nonetheless. Most seams needed no or very little filler and fit was very good overall apart from a couple of annoying areas that I can't do much about. I'll leave those to the eagle-eyed to find for themselves! This also marks my first attempt at using masks instead of decals. Mal at Miracle Masks cut all the markings except the smallest characters (those being decals - serials on wings and tail) and I'm very pleased indeed at how simple they were to use and the quality of results that can be achieved with patience and a deft touch. Paints used are a fair mix - more detail on that in the WIP. the whole model was finished with Vallejo's acrylic gloss varnish, of which I'm a growing fan. Promodeller black wash was used to highlight the very nicely and finely moulded panel and rivet detail. Comment and critique is always welcome and I hope you enjoy the shots. Thanks a lot to all of you who gave me some very, very helpful advice on colours during the WIP too. I hope you enjoy looking. Cheers all and a Happy New Year, Roger
  13. Hi All, I've never done a WIP before but now that I have some extra time on my hands I thought I'd give it a go. It certainly makes me think about the build more than I probably would normally. Next up on the bench for me is the Hobby Boss 1/48 scale Wildcat F4F-3 which I will finish in the early colours of USS Wasp CV-7. I'm currently fascinated by pre-war colour schemes and US aircraft were particularly jazzy. Here's the box shot showing the colours I'm aiming for as well as a few sprue shots... I've made a start on the cockpit - dryfit shot followed by glued and painted... I've never built a Hobby Boss model before but so far I'm happy with the quality of the parts and the moulded detail. All I've added so far have been tape lapbelts with some spare buckles I had knocking about. British and not American but I won't tell if you guys don't. My original plan had been to build a wheels-up model on a display stand but, annoyingly, the kit parts are all for a wheels-down version. The only part I'd need is a modified u/c cover but I'm put off scratching a pair because of the compound curves - I'd get it right or horribly wrong - it's one of those areas where there's no middle ground. I've a while to think about the options before I need to go one way or the other though. As far as plans for finishing go then I'm going to try using masks instead of decals for this build. I cut my own from mask from tape for swastikas on a FW190 recently and was really pleased with the result. There aren't many markings on this aircraft and they seem relatively simple so this will be a good place to cut my teeth, as it were. I'm in touch with Mal at Miracle Masks about getting the masks cut. For colours I’ll be using Vallejo Interior Green on interior surfaces, Alclad Duraluminium for the silver finish - it was silver lacquer and not NMF on the early Wildcats - and Tamiya Flat Yellow seems the best match for wings and the fuselage band. All painted over Vallejo grey acrylic primer. It doesn’t sand very well, leaving a “step” rather than a smooth feathered edge like Halfords’ best but once joins and seams are smooth it’s a good one to use and at under £10 a bottle it lasts for ages. It has a much smoother finish than Halfords’ and doesn’t need micromeshing to be ready for a topcoat. Being quite a light grey then it will help the colours pop a bit on this scheme. Next step is the engine bay and landing gear area forward of the cockpit. Cheers all, Roger
