  1. Ta-Daa! Only 11 years in the making, I started this in 2009 (When HL brought out the Panzer III) and got disillusioned 6 months later when they produced the StuG. The recent lockdown prompted me to revisit all the half-finished models, and this was the oldest. It's based on the HL Panzer. All the superstructure forward of the engine cover was removed, and the StuG crew compartment, gun and schurzen scratchbuilt. I also gutted the interior, stiffening the hull sideplates with 3mm styrene for full metal suspension and tracks, and fitting an aluminium plate in the front to take Mato metal gearboxes. It also has the Asiatam recoil system and the new fan powered smoker. Due to it's vintage it is still running the TK-13 main board. I also fitted a bigger speaker, moved the battery to the inside of the hull and added a charging port under one of the rear engine hatches. The left hand main engine hatch is hinged with access to volume control, off/on and smoke on/off. It's very crowded inside the hull! I also added some aftermarket (tiger) parts that were suitable, reskinned the mudguards and hinged the ends. Lots of clips and brackets were fabricated from brass, the MG shield is completely made from brass. Basic hull layout Gun location and recoil Switch panel With all the bits and pieces on it (and the lack of Zimmerit) it dates to about May 1943 production. It will get weathered slightly, I just need to find some muddy puddles. Hope you like it!
  2. This is a new area for Britmodeller, as it seems that quite a few of us are interested in these large scale models of famous armour such as the Tiger, King Tiger, Sherman, Pershing and many others. Remote control tanks aren't just the bailiwick of Tamiya with their high quality, but expensive kits. Heng Long supply remote control tanks for a fraction of the price, with sound, smoke and engine noises, as do a growing group of other suppliers such are Torro and in un-motorised forms,Trumpeter, Hobby Boss and now Panda. I'm sure I've missed some out, but I'm new to this growing group of modellers. Why the new section? Well, the factors of size and the inclusion of remote control on a lot of these scale kits, they're quite a bit different from the usual scales. They're also a bit harder to store, as the big ones such as the King Tiger are almost 60cm from front to back. Whether you buy them to use as fun toys, or upgrade them so that they're as accurate as possible, they can be quite good fun to play with, although if you're dedicated, you can run up quite a bill even if you don't choose Tamiya. If money is no object, you can go crazy with the Armortek kits, which I think are 1:6 or even crazier with a 1:4 King Tiger that'll cost from between £3,300 and over £10,000 depending on what you specify. That one can pull a car, and looks truly scary. It's quite a broad church though, as the Heng Long Tiger I can be had for around £50 if you shop around, and includes all the features above, with the King Tiger and others weighing in at only a little more for the basic plastic kits. You can spend a couple of hundred on a full-metal version of most tanks, which includes metal gears, wheels and tracks, or you you could buy the cheaper ones and upgrade to metal as parts wear out to keep your costs down. it's all very tempting though! The range of static kits in this larger scale is growing fast, with Panda joining the fray soon with a 1:16 P-38(t) in the next couple of weeks, which our friends at Welsh Dragon Models are hoping to have in stock earlier than most UK suppliers. Keep your eyes peeled for that one, and we'll try and get a review sample in to tempt you with. Dave (Shar2) has joined the moderating team for this larger scale, as he's just dipped his toe into the waters and has become quite interested in a very short time. If you've got any questions, just ask Dave or myself. Mike.
  3. Built some time ago, this shows it pre-weathering (primarily achieved by driving around the garden). I've also added squadron markings since then. Several mods to the interior and electronics. External mods include the front equipment rack and opening drivers hatch (for the control switches) It's in the uniquely coloured NZ MERDC camo.
  4. Hello there, this section isn't very big here on the forum, but I've got this project doodling along in the background. Picked up a HL no S or S 27Mhz Panzer IV and am doing a few modifications that some others may like to see. The pictures mostly speak for themselves, please comment or ask questions. It all starts with these and they just happen to fit perfectly inside the 8 screw sections that keep upper and lower hull together. Battery access will be by removing the upper hull. fire in the hole, lol adding a piece of steel coat hanger wire helps to centre the magnet keep checking for fit and make SURE the magnets are pulling each other and not pushing
  5. Hi all, I'm not big into Armour, don't know my tanks well so would like some advise and what you think to this idea. Firstly, I would like an R/C Tiger tank, on a budget, I know this does not bode well, but hear me out.... The R/C is not to go blasting everywhere but more as a novelty (it will sit in my display case most of the time), the Tiger has to look like a Tiger (so long as it looks OK, it does not have to be rivit correct), It HAS to be a Tiger, early or mid. King etc is no good, it's an Tiger early or mid or nothing. But most importantly I do not have an endless budget, less than £200 is my total budget. Soooo, my thoughts.... Purchase a Heng Long Pro Tiger 1 (with the metal tracks), more for sturdiness, then purchase a Taigen Tiger 1 upper hull. Add or rework any areas that I can, add a few scratch built bits Re-Spray the whole thing. Total purchase price will be in the order of... £109 for the Tiger £59.49 for the upper works. What are your thoughts? Can I make a decent looking Tiger out of this? As I say it is novelty factor for the R/c so it's not the biggest part of the project so the fact it is not scale speed etc is no matter, not that the gears clank etc etc.
  6. Hi here are a few photo's of my tanks if any one is interested. A Tiger, Walker Bulldog and Panther G. The Panther is still being painted. Any comments welcome. I know I have gone a bit mad on the chipping but I find it relaxing and it reminds me of my first car, a "T" reg Fiat! Cheers
