  1. The next instalment of my Luftwaffe camouflage exploration is this He-219 exhibited at Farnborough in late 1945. The attraction is the challenge of the RLM76 squiggle camouflage. Painted over a base of RLM75 this scheme is sometimes represented as dark mottling on a lighter base. This is incorrect however (unfortunately, as it would be a lot easier that way!). I’ve found an excellent source of 219 camouflage info which I’ll link later when we get to painting. I have had the Tamiya 1/48 scale kit in the stash for a while so that will be the canvas for this one. The kit has a good reputation and I’m expecting a relatively trouble-free assembly. There’s a few builds of this kit on BM of which an excellent example is @reini‘s and who’s WIP from 2020 will suffice to show the contents of the box and general kit info for anyone interested in a preview. That’ll do for now, treat this as a placeholder until there’s something specific to show. I hope that will be a Sunday update showing some form of progress on the cockpit. Cheers.
  2. My other overdue RFI is my more recently finished Tamiya 1/48 He-219 Uhu. This one I really enjoyed but ran into all kinds of trouble with the paint and subsequent clear coats. For whatever reason, the Future/Klear would not cure on the Hataka paints and remained tacky. After trying everything, I was able to remove the Future with Windex without damaging the paint. Even though subsequent clear coats were an improvement, the finish still didn't properly cure leading to a great deal of trouble handling the still-slightly-tacky model to completion. It's going to be a dust magnet... The whole story is in the WIP. I painted almost all of the markings, the only decals I used were the "IV" designation at the cockpit. I was quite happy with the paint job; the squiggle isn't as tight as on the real thing, but it's not bad and by the end I was quite comfortable with its application. I think I can do better next time though. The kit itself is Tamiya through and through, well engineered, well produced, a joy to work with. The photos. Cheers.
  3. Morning all. I’ve decided it’s time to start work on the “shelf of doom”, particularly whilst I’m waiting for a couple of GB to win 🤞🏻 and be authorised (but that’s 2023!!). So I’ve pulled this off the shelf: I’ve found this on the Net which is going to be a great help, but I was wondering if there are any top tips from Luftwaffe fans, on how to do the mottled camo? I’ve never done a WW2 Luftwaffe aircraft in mottled schemes, so it’s going to be a challenge!! My plan was to finish it in RAF colours as one of the aircraft captured at Grove at the end of the war and test flown by Farnborough. I don’t think I’ve got the appropriate roundels anywhere in the spares box, so was thinking of spraying them on (another first), can anyone recommend some pre-cut decals or a really good way of cutting your own to the correct size in masking tape or vinyl tape? All ideas very welcome
  4. Here are the finished photos of my most recent build, Tamiya's venerable He-219. Following the clear coat to protect the paintwork, an oil panel line wash of dark drown on the upper surfaces, and light brown on the underside was added. The excess was wiped off and the model was sealed with a semi-gloss coat prior to attaching the gear, props, fiddly parts. Chipping was added using grey paint and prismacolour pencil, and exhaust staining, fuel leaks etc were added using various Mig and Vallejo products. Finally the FuG radio masts and antennae rigging were attached and navigation lights added using Krystal Klear. At 24 years young, this kit was a pleasure to construct and didn't fight me one inch. A real testament to the engineers at Tamiya! Thanks for viewing. https://photos.app.goo.gl/FYVSZMhb11qbtXnaA
  5. Hello all... Here is my entry in this group build. Dragons 1/72nd Heinkel He-219-0 UHU. I have posted a link from scalemates for now. https://www.scalemates.com/kits/dragon-5005-he-219a-0-uhu--106305# Once i get the chance later tonight. I will actually photograph the box and contents. With the obligatory sprue shots. Dennis
  6. Pictures coming soon, but I am now equipped with a Zoukei Mura Uhu, some groovy turned brass aerials, and a couple of books on the subject... Kagero's volume 2 monograph is amazing. I'm also waiting on some Radu Brinzan seat belts, aeroscale cockpit placards, and considering some Miracle Masks. So much for my philosophy of 'If it costs THAT much, it won't need any aftermarket.'. Cripes, it is (a) big, and ( complicated... but you already knew that, right? I'm conservatively estimating 9 months, forcing myself to go slow to do the best job I can. Wish me luck...
  7. Heinkel He-219 Uhu Vol2 Kagero Monograph Following on from the first volume reviewed by mike HERE Kagero have released volume 2. This book is full of amazingly detailed 3D renderings on top of the very interesting history of the type in Luftwaffe service, including some great photographs from WWII of a fair number of aircraft, many in various states of disrepair or destruction. This section covers the first thirty one pages of the book and shows a variety of different camouflage schemes used on the type. The next sixty eight pages really concentrates on the equipment used in the 219 and the methods of construction of sections of the aircraft. These drawings are beautifully done with some superb detail that could very well be incorporated into a model, particularly in one of the big 1:32 machines. Talking of which, Kagero have also included a superb set of plans on a double sided A1 sheet. All the plan drawings are in 1:32, with the small exception of the gun sight which has been drawn in 1:8 scale. Conclusion This book on its own is a must buy for all those interested in either the Luftwaffe in general or the He-219 in particular, but when put together with Vol 1 this makes it a spectacularly interesting and useful set. For the modeller, the details shown in the 3D renderings would be so very handy to get all those little details right when building their masterpiece. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
