  1. I'm embarking on a project with the goal of representing a Hawker Hurricane in the markings of each Allied country that did not use more-or-less standard UK markings. First stage of this goal will be to represent a Hurricane with markings from every continent. Probably as follows: Africa: Egypt; Asia: Iran; Australia; Europe: Yugoslavia Poland; North America: USA (actually RN plane, but US markings in Operation Torch); South America: Argentina. Second stage will be to complete the rest (mostly other European markings--e.g., Soviet Union, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey, Poland, Ireland). I am excluding the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and even Norway (which seem to have only flown aircraft with RAF markings, but I would love to be corrected). Third stage will be five Axis versions--Romania and Finland as actual operators of the type, plus captured versions from Germany, Italy, and Japan. Along the way, I will be building most marks and many different kit brands, although I have no particular goals in this regard. I will post a photo of all my kits once I get them. Since this is an ambitious goal given the pace at which I build models, they will almost all be OOB and there will be minimal weathering and other detailing. The point will be have fun and produce interesting Hurricanes!
  2. First time posting in Ready for Inspection.. 😬 but here goes Here's my Hawker Hurricane Mk.I painted as an aircraft of 242 Squadron, RAF Duxford, August 1940 as flown by Sub-Lieutenant R.J. "Dickie" Cork RN, DSO & DSC Kit by Airfix, has Eduard Look Instrument Panel, Eduard Brassin Wheels and Exhausts, Decals by Airfix and Xtradecal Many thanks for looking Many regards Matt
  3. Well have recently finished my two builds for the Fleet Air Arm Group Build, so have a bit of time between the Fleet Air Arm GB and the P-47 GB in end of September.. So have decided to build an Airfix 1:48 Hawker Hurricane Mk.I from my stash, I've got some Xtradecal Decals for it and am considering doing it in the markings of 242 Squadron either the machine flown by Sub-Lieutenant 'Jimmy' Gardner RN or the machine flown by Sub-Lieutenant 'Dickie' Cork RN I shan't bore you all with the shots of the sprues as majority of builds of this kit seem to have them Anyway I made a start yesterday of the cockpit framework and wing spars When dry fitting the pilot discovered that his feet fouled the pedals so - his feet were amputated. The Seafire pilot I built in the FAA GB also had to have this done. However its so far into the cockpit you can't see that his feet are missing.. poor chap. Here's where we are now.. I had initially thought of painting a mustache on him to make him look different from the other pilots I've painted however having looked at photos of both Cork and Gardner both were clean shaven so will paint over the 'tache.. 🙂 Many thanks for looking Regards Matt
  4. New research in the National Archives, and re examining an old photo, have revealed a fascinating Battle of Britain paint scheme. A Yellow recognition band. It makes the cover of a new book, and a fascinating Youtube documentary. Masking tape at the ready! The Rarest Battle of Britain Photo Ever? - The mystery tail band - YouTube
  5. I love Hawker Hurricanes and have built many of them in 1/72nd scale over the last two years (see: Hawker Hurricanes around the World), but 1/144 is NOT my comfort zone (actually I've never tried before). So, I thought, why not? I think I feel even less comfortable now that I look at the sprues, but nonetheless, here we go . . . First up will be the Zvezda Mk I kit, kindly supplied by @Mjwomack! I have three of Sweet kits (each allowing you to build two Hurricanes, so that's six total!), too, which look to be somewhat better quality than Zvezda, so we'll start with the Zvezda and see where it goes. The Sweet kits include extra propellers, so I should be able to steal one of those to replace the one missing from the Zvezda kit. I have a few decal options for this, and have not decided which way I'll go in terms of markings yet, but fairly confident I won't be using the Zvezda decals. There were two sets in this kit, including two canopies, but they are not impressive decals. Here are the sprues, including the stand, which I do think I'll use. Seven parts total for the a/c itself--one fuselage, one wings, two UC, two stabilizers, and the canopy! What have I got myself into!? 🥴
  6. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for seventy years. I thought that it would be appropriate to model something that has been associated with her for nearly all of that time. The Battle of Britain Memorial flight has taken part in every jubilee flypast: 1977, 2002, 2012 and again this year. Two aircraft have taken part in every flypast: Lancaster PA474 and Hurricane LF363. I like Hurricanes so I thought I would model LF363 but with a difference. I will be building three models depicting the markings it carried in 1977, 2002/2012 and this year. So... three models it is. LF363 is a Hurricane MkIIc, originally built with 20mm cannons. However, it has spent most of its life masquerading as a Mk I with the cannons removed and wearing a Temperate Land Scheme, which it never wore in RAF service, The aircraft was one of the last Hurricanes to be taken into RAF service - some sources state that it was actually the last one. These are the kits that I will be using: Heller, Smer and Mistercraft. They are actually all the same kit!
  7. I am in the middle of a project I am calling "Hawker Hurricanes around the world." I've divided this project into three phases. In phase one I modeled one Hawker Hurricane in markings from each of Australia, North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. I am now into phase two, which is to model Hurricanes in the markings of every other Allied nation that flew them, except for the RAF and those that wore RAF markings (e.g., Canada and New Zealand). Here is the WIP: As part of phase two I am modeling a Free French Hawker Hurricane, and I put off starting it until this week so that I could join my first Group Build! I went back and forth between whether this would be an Mk I or an Mk IIb, but have settled on BG707, an Mk IIb. I will be using this Fly kit. There is some controversy over the camo scheme and markings this Hurc is wearing, but I intend to use the standard dark earth/middle stone over azure blue, and will figure out the markings later!
  8. Hello Everyone Adi here . . . I wanted to make a Snowy Base for the Finnish AF Hawker Hurricane which I just completed. To make the base I use Plywood and cover this with acrylic putty. I use baking powder to sprinkle the base for the Snow Effect. I make trees using wooden kitchen skewers and single strand wire. For the branches I used dried grass as I did not have access to Woodland Scenics Sea Foam. I make my own flocking using a sponge and I churn it in the mixer. I make two different shades of green. I spray the trees with diluted PVA Glue and sprinkle these trees with baking powder for the snow. The whole base was completed in a Day using basic and simple steps . . . Best Adi
  9. This model was supposed to be a relaxing work, but it's not like that. Quite a complex and poor model to work with. It can be seen that the company is new on the market and that it still needs a lot of work to reach the level of better and higher quality companies. Here is picture.
  10. So if you managed to join me over in my post for the SB 2M, I told you that I had also completed a Hawker Hurricane and would be completing a separate build thread - so here goes. As the title suggests, I decided to go a bit off piste with the Hurricane and rather than build as the usual RAF machine, decided to mix things up a bit and go for the Belgian scheme within the box. I'm really glad I did as the all silver underside and the black, yellow and red of the Belgian Air Force roundels really makes it pop. This is the Mk 1 (2 bladed prop) boxing of the Airfix Hurricane and unlike some of the trials and tribulations I had with the SB 2M Bomber, I can happily say that this was a joy to put together with no fit issues and probably the most solid undercarriage of any aircraft kit I've ever built. Build is OOB with the addition of seat belts, wing tip lights and aerial wire just to add an extra few realistic touches. Painted with Tamiya for the RAF Dark Green and Mr Hobby Aqueous for the Dark Earth with the usual pin wash and pigments etc to add some weathering to blend everything together. Again photo heavy - sorry - can never decide what to leave in and what to take out!! Hope you enjoy and feefback is always appreciated from BM's modelling greats. Thanks Kris
  11. The Hillson FH40 Slip Wing Hawker Hurricane is finished and ready for your inspection and comments. I would Like to thank A BIG THANK YOU those off this forum who have helped me with there knowledge. Thank you for looking.
  12. Hello Everybody ... Thought I would pop in and build Revell’s Hurricane IIB as a lend-lease to the Soviet Union. I plan on doing this one in winter distemper over the RAF colors. It should look like this if I succeed. The upper profile is something like what im going for. Though to be honest the Artillery spotting two seater is making me consider that option as well. Anyone have any info on the Two seater that might sway me ? Specifically looking for a line drawing or interior photos of the rear observers seat? Also Im looking for any info concerning the RS-82 rockets seen on the white-washed hurricane ? Work wont start for about a week. Im still involved in 4 other group builds with 5 aircraft currently. A couple of those will be done in the next week so that will free up the time needed. My thanks to the Host(s) for letting me join. Questions, comments, or jokes ? Dennis
  13. Hi everyone I'd like to show you my 1/48 Airfix Hawker Hurricane Mk1. Pinterest.com The model still needs some shoulder harnesses plus it needs a rear view mirror, these will be added in due course. The Airfix kit builds up into a pleasing representation of the classic RAF fighter and it will look good in my cabinet. Any comments are always welcome. Cheers Iain
  14. Now a little thematic from the Yugoslav territories. The model is old, but I was satisfied with the final result. Here are the pictures, enjoy.
  15. At Wonderland Models we are now stocking a range of Arma Hobby plastic model 1/72 aircraft, including the new Sea Hurricane Kit.
  16. This is the new tool Airfix 1/48 Hawker Hurricane Mk.I in 56 Sqn markings as an alternative to those supplied in the kit. I pre-shaded and post-shaded and then wondered why none of my pots of Dark Earth matched the colour on the model when I tried to paint the antenna that I had left off until late in the build to avoid breaking it off. Lesson learned to paint it at the same time as doing the main camo scheme so the colours match:
  17. Another model from about a year ago, more eye candy for the select audience of British subjects 😉 Here comes the Hurricane (Or, as friend Patrice Roman said, a "Pacific Hurricane" 🙂 A very nice, inexpensive, well-detailed Academy kit that assembles quite well, with decals that are already in the market, so no need to reinvent the wheel this time. An exciting departure one may say from the dull versions seen already to the point of indigestion. For you heretics of the 1/48th sect, there is a Hasegawa kit -that has a few mistakes, though, check against photos. Beware that this racer went through many changes, look at photos for details, like different exhausts, antenna, decoration, race number, mirror or not on the canopy, and so forth. I used the wonderful Lifelike Decals Hurricane Pt.1 set, but taking only what I needed to create the first appearance of the plane, without race numbers, with only one "the last of the many" legends on one side, and a slightly different position -according to photos- of the wing registrations. I added a rear-view mirror and a metal ring on the carb intake, again following photos. A truly enjoyable kit, a very nice and well-behaved set of decals, a superb-looking civilized subject: modeling paradise. What do you do to relax? I read J. L. Borges, listen to baroque and contemporary music, watch British TV shows (Masterpiece Mysteries, among many), and Fellini's DVDs...and I build models. And to relax of building models? I build more models. There is a surprising quantity of after-market sets for this kit that you can use to spice-up your build, like spinners, props, wheels, photo-etched galore, etc. I will ignore them all, since I want to keep things simple this time. Did you know that this very plane was entered by Princess Margaret for racing purposes? Or that it was the last Hurricane ever built? Or that the English term "Hurricane" derives from Spanish "Huracán", that in turn derives from Caribbean native language "Hura-Kan", which means "Heart of Heaven", and was also the name of the god of storms? Now you do.
  18. For my entry in this group build, I had to literally head into my wardrobe for this one 😉. First off, the customary 'before we get started' picture. After a few evenings of work, here is where I stand: Some paint on the kit detail and a few PE extras to make the detail pop.
  19. Here are some shots of my recent Hurricane conversion. The base kit was a clear-moulded 1/144 Mk I from Sweet with lengthened nose, and scratchbuilt prop, spinner, canopy, cannons and later style exhausts etc etc. Painting is with Mr Color lacquers and weathered with oils and Pergamino .5mm pale grey pencil. Hope you like it!
  20. Hi folks. More than once in going on the six decades I've been kicking around, I've been described as 'a frustrated journalist'. Fair comment I guess and as that love of investigation and writing fits well with a passion for uniting bits of plastic, metal and resin, I've decided to kick off a modelling blog. I really dislike the term 'blog'; whoever coined it could've come up with something infinitely loss prosaic, that suggests more a nasal blockage than a personal journal but there we are. The inaugural article covers a subject that assumed unexpected importance just two short years ago - the revelation that Nick's Hurricane wore a 'Red Devil' artwork when he was shot down on August 16, 1940. You're cordially invited to re-trace those steps and the many twists and turns along the way: Apologies - link withdrawn. Steve :-)
  21. After almost 2 months of building I've finally finished off my latest model. The Airfix new tool Hurricane mk 1 in AASF markings (kit supplied) VY-C based in France. I can't say this was some of my best work and the kit had a few issues that needed to be dealt with, notably all the filling and cleanup involved with mating the wing halves and joining them to the fuselage. Still despite all the complications (including a fair few mishaps caused by myself) I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out. The model was airbrushed with Tamiya acrylics and Vallejo Metal colour acrylics. I used a set of Eduard PE generic RAF early harnesses as the only aftermarket bits. A fair amount of scratch built detail was added to the cockpit including a new instrument panel and gunsight, unfortunately I can't really photograph this unless I invest in an endoscopic camera Link to the WIP thread here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234999978-172-airfix-hurricane-mk1-bof-markings/ Thanks for viewing
  22. Hello everyone! This is my first post on Britmodeller after a long time lurking. I just finished my my first model in ten or so years, feels good to be back with the paint and glue! So, the model. I made _a lot_ of rookie mistakes, especially which the paint (did not stir the matte coat, and had to redo it several times before I understand what was wrong…) But I am pretty pleased with the result anyway. It is an Airfix 1/72 Hawker Hurricane Mk.1. Not a lot of details, but the fit was OK. Brush painted with Humbrol Enamels. The antenna that’s way too thick is stretched sprue. Base made from scratch with a flowerpot saucer and putty. Thank you for looking! Regards, Johan
  23. Hello lads, I'm new to this forum and this is my first model build ever, I hope you like it. As a newbie, any suggestion or comment will be gladly received.
  24. Hi I've seen plenty of really beautiful done models of Hawker Hurricane on RFI. I would like to share with my not pretending to perfectly duo of Mk I's: a fabric wing by AZ and metal wing by Airfix (1/72) They are rather OOB (EDIT - I later posts I corrected it - actually both were a bit reshaped - and what perhaps important - the Airfix Mk I is mode out of rised lines kit from 70's ), just decals and markings are different. Fabric wing ("Paddy III") is in markings of 73 Squadron RAF in France, pliot Flying Officer Edgar J.Kain (DFC), Rouvres-en-Woevre, France, April 1940 and metal wing is in markings of 303 (Polish) Squadron RAF BOB, end of September 1940, Northolt - with inscription on total score of 303 Sq. - 126 victories in BOB (decals by Techmod). She was used by many pilots of "303", among them fameous Polish ace Jan Zumbach. Regards and comments welcome Jerzy-Wojtek AZ fabric wing: Aifix metal wing:
