  1. During the Second World War, the Royal Australian Air Force used many Hawker Typhoons in Europe. These were all painted in the standard RAF Day Fighter Scheme and are quite familiar. With the exception of the prototypes and development aircraft I can only think of three non-standard Typhoon schemes - a development aircraft which was painted in the desert scheme, an aircraft painted in the green/grey night fighter scheme and a postwar aircraft that was in natural metal. I've always thought it was a shame that Typhoons didn't appear in a wider range os schemes. During the latter part of the war, the RAAF was heavily involved in mopping up resistance in Borneo. Spitfire VIIIs were employed in the ground attack role. Attrition was quite high as the aircraft were not really suited to the role. What if the RAAF had managed to get an aircraft which was suited to the role? This is the Hobby Boss 1/72 Typhoon, painted in RAAF colours... The kit comes nicely packaged and, as the box suggests, is intended to be a easy build... in fact, it's pretty much snap together. The sprues Notice that there are two sprues for the prop, one with a four bladed prop the other with three.
  2. Hello and thanks for your interest! This is my latest model, the 1/72 Airfix Hawker Typhoon, dressed as "F-3A 'Diane'", serial number MN716, flown by Pilot Officer R.G. Fox in November 1944. The model was built from the box, the only addition was photo-etch seatbelts from CMK. Decals are from the Aviaeology sheet "RCAF Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB 1944 to Bodenplatte" (https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/AOD72008). The Squadrons covered are No 438, 439 and 440 Sqns during 1944 through to operation Bodenplatte. The series covers nine different subject aircraft including one car door version and eight bubble canopy versions. Aviaeology include an exclusive on the two sizes of the early “type B” upper wing roundels. Aviaelogy supply far more than your average aftermarket decal sheet, in fact it is a multi-page b/w booklet with background info and b/w pictures of some of the aircraft featured. A colour PDF version of the colour scheme is available for free though registering on the Aviaeology Web Site. The decals are of highest quality and perform flawlessly. However I did manage to break up the correct "F3" codes for this particular machine by mishandling them; I had to fall back to another "F3" code that has a slightly different font. I guess you would not have noticed unless you're an expert on 2.TAF aircraft (or you work for Aviaeology). Former squadron codes ("5V") were overpainted; I copied this by spraying the "5V" codes with dark grey through a paper mask before applying the "F3" codes over it. If you look closely, you will notice that the "F3" codes look brighter then the code letter "A" - this is intentional as I believe only the "5V/F3" code was changed. I tried to replicate the tatty appearance of the invasion stripes on the lower fuselage. The model was painted with Gunze acrylics. Photographs by Wolfgang Rabel, IGM Cars & Bikes.
  3. Hawker Typhoon 1B Tropical Trials Unit Conversion 1:48 Red Roo Models Serious thought was given to the use of the Typhoon overseas once the problems with the engine, and rear fuselage structural problems were resolved. The proposals were first mooted in 1941 but not acted on until Winston Churchill raised the issue of them being used in the MTO. By mid November 1942 the aircraft was ready with a modified air filter being fitted. However due to engine failures and other accidents the programme was delayed. By 1943 three aircraft (R8891, DN323 & EJ908) were fitted with the new experimental filters and ferried out to the Middle East for trials. By the end of September 1943 the protracted trials were considered at an end and the three aircraft released to 451 Sqn for general flying. EJ906 was struck of charge in February 1944 due to a lack of spares, RR8891 was lost when it struck the ground in August 1994, and DN323 was stuck off charge shortly after the crash of R8891 as it was considered no longer worth the trouble of keeping it airworthy! All there aircraft features the scheme of Dark Earth & Light Stone over Azure blue. There seems to be evidence of EJ906 wearing the code letter Y, but none for the other two airframes. The resin part though small is well cast. The decals look well printed, colour dense, and should pose no problems to the modeller. The modeller will have to use the kit, or their own national insigna. . A set of comprehensive notes and instructions are provided in addition to the decals. The conversion is for the 1.48 Hasegawa kit, though the guys at Red Roo tell us they are working on a 1.72 version as well. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  4. My entry for this GB will be this: Inevitable sprue shot: and this is the scheme I'll be building it as: This will be pretty much OOB, except for the Barracuda resin intakes and exhaust. I intend to build it flying so I'll be using some prop-blurs left over from my Mosquito build last year so the stand MAY contain some element of cotton wool
  5. Hell everyone, I thought I would draw attention to a project that I am loosely involved with but one of my friends is more closely involved. It is the restoration of a Hawker Typhoon MkI, serial RB396. The project is in an embryonic stage at the moment but some very exciting news is due to be revealed shortly. At the moment the project contains many individual parts, namely the fuselage, elevators, undercarriage and many small items plus a large amount of the aircraft drawings. The project will soon become a charity enabling donations but at the moment the greatest task is locating as many parts as possible, in particular a set of wings and cockpit. More information on the project can be found at: www.hawkertyphoon.com And the facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/hawkertyphoonRB396?ref=ts&fref=ts
  6. Hi, Two of my old kits - I still like them. They are much younger that Maryland - Hawker Tempest V - Heller/Airfix kit and Hawker Typhoon Ib - Frog kit. As far I I remember - Tempest is basicaly OOB except decals (red outlinings hand painted) wheres Typhoon was reshaped. I made smaller nose and spinner as well as re-shaped air oulet from cooler to make it similar to that of Tempest and I added bulb on canopy (this is a piece drop-like formed clear styrene glued just with Humbrol gloss varnish of the top of canopy. Perhaps there were some other operation which I do not remember now, after almost 20 years. Now I have in stash Airfix new Typhoon waiting for his turn... The Tempest is JN765, JF.K , markings of Squadron 3 RAF, P/O Kosh, Newchurch, UK, Summer 1944. It is like that: Typhoon is RB224 US.H "Land Girl" in markings of Squadron 56 RAF, Matlaske, UK, after March 1943 (name hand written): Comments welcome Regards Jerzy-Wojtek
  7. Hi folks after a year of Hurricanes and obsolete builds it,s back to newer tooled kits.First up Airfix,s Typhoon,a joy to build OOB painted invasion stripes as I am not a fan of decals and a little dark wash just to bring out the panel lines.
  8. Hello there guys. So as promised in my new member post heres the photos of my builds too date, all but one are airfix and the stuka tank buster is revell. Enjoy. These are in pretty much in order (from bottom to the top) of builds apart from the stuka and the RAF benevolent fund hawk and stuka. The benevolant fund hawk was my last build. Any comments and constructive criticisim is welcomed but please be nice
  9. Hi all, My second effort of three in this gb (the one I'm dreading second most) is the Airfix 1/72 Hawker Typhoon 1b The relatively new box flatters to deceive.... It harbors a kit that I'm sure many of you are familiar with - and has been doing the rounds since 1959 - yes a 54 year old kit.. I will be trying to add some photo etch to this (my first ever time working with 1/72 etch) and maybe some aftermarket decals - that is if the kit hasn't beaten me by the time we get to that stage.... As in my other builds please keep your expectations low - my aim is to complete not to impress!!!! Let's have a look what joys await....... The box... The Sprues - A closer shot of the sprue with the prop - What is that around the base of the prop? Flash or detail? Does it stay or does it go?? finally instructions, decals and a rather thick looking transparent blob...... Any help on known pitfalls and advice would as always be much appreciated.. However this may not be a place for the purist - things could get messy!!! Thanks Tuco
  10. Kit: 1/72 Academy Hawker Typhoon Ib. Extras: CMK Vacu Canopy, Eduard Photo Etch, Vailant Resin Rockets and Rails Decals: Carpena (Code Letters), Techmod (Roundels), Serials and Stencils from the kit. Thanks for your interest.
  11. Hawker Typhoon Detailing Set 1:72 Valiant Wings We’ve reviewed a number of resin upgrade sets from Valiant Wings on these pages recently. This comprehensive upgrade set for the Hawker Typhoon seems to be their pièce de résistance, however, such is the amount of resin they have packed into the box. The set is universal, which means it isn’t designed for any particular kit. In my view, the Academy Typhoon is pretty much the pick of the models available at the moment, but Valiant Wings seem to have been remarkably prescient in preparing this set, as new kits from Brengun and Airfix are just around the corner. This fabulously comprehensive set includes the following parts: Replacement main landing gear wheels and tail wheel; Replacement three and four blade propellers and spinners; Early drop tanks; 90 gal drop tanks and hardpoints; 250lb, 500lb and 1000lb bombs and hardpoints; Three types of rocket rails, 25lb Armour Piercing, 60lb High Explosive and unarmed; and Shrouded and unshrouded cannon barrels; There are eight of each type of rocket/rail included. The 25lb rockets are very welcome as most kits only include the 60lb variety All of the parts are all cast in smooth, grey resin. Casting is undertaken by CMR of the Czech Republic on behalf of Valiant Wings. The finish of the parts looks excellent. Details are sharp and precise and there are no apparent flaws in the resin. This is a high quality of this set, and considering what you get in the box, it is excellent value too. My advice is to stock up one some of these sets in anticipation of the release of the new kit from Airfix. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
