  1. Some three years ago I came across the old Fujimi 1/700 HMS Eagle R05 kit. As most of us know, the Japanese have equipped this kit with two completely different air wings - one is made up of 4 Seafires and 4 Sea Furies and the other consists of 4 Gannets and 4 Wessex helos. Unfortunately, neither piston-engine fighters nor helicopters were on board the R05 at the time of her baptism of fire in 1956. After many months of searching, I was able to assemble the 1956 air wing of 1/700 Seahawks and Sea Venoms, which may be accompanied by Gannets provided by Fujimi. Obviously, the Gannets were not used in Suez emergency (there was no submarine threat there), but they were still on board in May 1956 when Eagle anchored in Malta. The Gannets then flew home from Malta, and the R05 took part in Operation Musketeer in late October. Later (in early 1957), another Gannet flight is again listed as operating from the Eagle deck. My questions (two years ago I asked them in the BM aviation section - with no answer to this day) are: does anyone know the dates when the first Gannet flight (812 NAS) left the Eagle deck and when another (814 NAS) Gannet flight landed on the same deck after the Suez campaign? when were the black & yellow identification stripes painted on the Eagle aircraft in 1956 and when were they removed? are there any photos of the R05 deck featuring "striped" planes (Seahawk, Sea Venom, a.s.o.) next to Gannet (with no stripes of course)? Of course there are many pre- or post-Muskeeter air wing photos aboard Eagle, but the jets don't have black+yellow stripes. Is there any chance to show "striped" jets next to Gannets? Why Gannets? Because I don't have 1/700 Wyverns to make the R05 into a full Suez crisis fit... Any help in this matter will be appreciated Cheers Michael
  2. As my builds for the AFVs are proceeding I thought it time to get on with something with wings. As well as the defence of Malta Sea Gladiators were active in the Med as Fleet fighters for a significant period up until mid 1941. Swordfish pilots formed 813F NAS to give a fighter defence using some of the Sea Gladiators left as a reserve on Malta where they were Eagle's Fighter defence in 1940 until mid 1941. My base kit for this build will be the new mould Airfix Gladiator. A little bit of work will be needed to scratch a dinghy pack and the arrestor hook housing. I'll use some transfers left over from my Pavla build from the BoB GB. I obviously started to put some paint on it before but nothing has been started apart from that.
  3. Dear modelling enthusiasts For my first contribution to Britmodeller, I attach here some images of my just completed 1/700 HMS Eagle (R.05). This is the old 1976 Fujimi kit, and was a bit of a challenge due to reasons including old, brittle plastic, and missing pieces (eBay purchase). The only upgrade was a set of 1/700 railing. Otherwise built out of the box and home made items. This was also my first attempt at creating an ocean diorama base. I tried to represent the Eagle at high speed. Best regards Marcello
  4. My next build is Trumpeter's 1:72 British Wyvern S.4. I'm quite excited about this build as it will be my first kit made by Trumpeter, and it looks fantastic. The box art is stunning, and entice you right in. The instruction booklet is large with clear and beautiful pictures, as is the colour scheme/ decal sheet. There are 5 grey sprues with a nice amount of detail and no flash. There is a small clear sprue, and large decal sheet which contains a film piece for the instrument panel. I plan to build it straight from the box, using Vallejo acrylics, with the wings in folded position. I will use the colour scheme of 830Sqn HMS Eagle, 1956. Time now to give the sprues a wash and set to work
  5. After the 1955 refit (angled deck introduction) HMS Eagle sailed in May 1956 to Malta with the air wing consisting of Seahawks, Sea Venoms, Wyverns, Gannets and Skyraider AEWs. Then the Gannets were flown home from Malta and R05 took part in Operation Musketeer in the end of October. Afterwards (somewhere in 1957) another Gannet flight is listed again as operating from the Eagle deck. My questions are: does anybody know the dates when the first Gannet flight (812 NAS) left the Eagle deck and when another (814 NAS) Gannet flight landed on the same deck after the Suez campaign? when were the black & yellow identification stripes painted on the Eagle aircraft in 1956 and when were they removed? are there any photos of the R05 deck featuring any "striped" planes (Seahawk, Sea Venom, a.s.o.) side by side with Gannet (with no stripes of course)? Thank you in advance for any help in this matter Cheers Michael
  6. I know it's a bit of a challenge but I thought I'd give it a go. It's been in the stash for a few years and it's a beautiful little plane. So typical of pre-war FAA. There are 5 sprues of nice but softly moulded plastic, typical of a short run model. There is also a small film for the windshield. The sprues have a whole bundle of things not to be used. I think it's a kit for a number of two seater Hart versions. And a rather nice transfer sheet for an HMS Eagle based aircraft.
  7. Good Morning, 23 Jan and still 14 days for this GB and I am finally home and off. I have 3 weeks Leave, kids are at School & wife is at work, it's chuffing cold outside (compared to where I have just been for 6+ months) so I won't be windsurfing........2 x Wessex from HMS EAGLE (1969) here we go. This build is for fun - I intend to enjoy it AND have 2 great looking WESSEX at the end. So I will be putting the effort into the paintwork rather than the wiring detail behind the cockpit instruments. 'cos I'm last off the start line, you lot have done all the research for me, so I'll blatantly copy all you tips on how to paint the seats and use the excellent Scalewarship blade fold (thank you!!) I'll be using the LDECALS for the 826 Wessex 3 and am gonna have to really be clever with spares/scalpel/hand painting with the Wessex 1 SAR ........All I need at the end of this is for Airfix to make a Vixen & Buccaneer in Eagle's 899 & 800 markings and I'll be......oh, what? they do already? Doesn't get any easier does it!!! Here's my plan for the Wessex 1 Airliner's Wessex 1 (EAGLE) - note the really faded Dayglo orange The obligatory phots of the boxes, first cut of plastic and white paint to allow me start on the "EAGLE" behind the cockpit. note the modeldecal instructions - 1/72, but I'll use as ref & scale up the decals for copying typing this 1st post whilst white paint dries. Intend 3/4 shutting cabin doors, so I can be lazy on the interiors (sadly my real life wessex 3 "lookers" seat that served me well as a youngster in my bedroom has long since been taken to the dump - always wanted all those years ago to do a Wessie 3) update later today or 1st thing tomorrow
  8. Hi Everyone! I'm building the Blackburn Firebrand TF.5. WIP is here: http://www.britmodel...03#entry1208569 I'm a bit at loss here with the spinner color. I do have the Warpaint and From the Cockpit books, but cannot take the color profiles they (authors) provide at a face value. I'm not saying they are not correct (actually I kinda am), I'm just saying I don't trust those. Please check for yourself: Sky and Black spinner are obviously wrong colors. I have two options: Red and EDSG (same as top colors)? So which one it's gonna be? Were the spinners color coded? If so, based on what? Sqn.? Aircraft carrier? Thank you forehand for any input you could provide!
  9. The old boxes should not be left on the shelf. This one was build OOB. Price in UK pounds 4,50 Remarkeble for some reasons: 1. American build aircraft in Britisch FAA service in the post war era. 2. Given under MDAP conditions to the UK MOD 3. Used under war conditions in the already named Suez crisis. Regards, Dirk, The Netherlands.
