  1. Hi Everyone Again, Thought i'd also post my Revell 1/32 He-111 H6 - Built a couple of years ago Excellent model design by Revell. Shame these are hard to find now. Only a few fit issues but excellent to build. Maybe HKM may do one. Revell's BF-110 is also a great kit. Got that on the bench to finish soon. I'm doing a C-7 Night Fighter variant One downside of a 1/32 He-111 though...... They're huge!
  2. The idea to make a fictitious HE-113 fighter for this campaign seemed like cheating to me despite it is on the list of planes that took part in the battle. So, thinking about what I have in stash I reached for the He111 box and decided to start it as well. Most of the 111's have already flown to STGB, so it's not bad to have one here. For starters, the required box images: I almost sold the He-100 a couple of months ago, but when I looked at the parts again, I decided to build it. The level of detail for this short run model is excellent, panel lines are fine and clear. The Airfix kit has a phenomenal interior which is a model in itself, a ton of parts that fit perfectly.
  3. 80 years ago today, Lt. Herbert Huck, Gefr. Georg Kerkhoff, Uffz. Paul Plischke and Fw. August Skokan of 9.KG26 based in Stavanger, Norway were briefed to attack the airfield at Leuchars in Fife with shipping and dock facilities in the Firth of Tay as an alternative target. They departed mid-morning in Heinkel He-111H-3 1H+FT but there seems to be some confusion over whether this was in the company of other aircraft or alone. We will examine this later. We next hear of the Heinkel approaching the city of Aberdeen from the North, a good 60 miles northeast of its intended target. One possible explanation is that the crew had opted to minimise their time over the North Sea, making landfall over the nearest part of Scotland to Norway, then making their way to Leuchars inland avoiding the massed defences and radar sites around the firths of Tay and Forth. Their hopes of remaining undetected en-route to the target were frustrated by a raid earlier that day which had left the Observers Corp, responsible for tracking enemy movements inland, on full alert and able to sound the alarm in time for the three Spitfires of yellow section, 603 (City of Edinburgh) squadron to be scrambled from RAF Dyce (now Aberdeen Airport) and intercept the intruder. The Heinkel flew across Aberdeen towards the sea, harried by the Spitfires and jettisoning its bomb load until reaching the sea it turned southwest, possibly deterred by the barrage of fire coming from the defences on the coast and ships in the harbour. Pilot Officers J. R. Caister and G.K. Gilroy and Sergeant I. K. Arber finally delivered the coup d'grace over the city's Duthie Park and the Heinkel plummeted into a nearly completed ice rink on South Anderson Drive striking the top of a tree on the way. All four members of the crew were killed instantly. Eye witnesses related how one crew member was hanging out of a hatch on the aircraft when it crashed, presumably attempting to bail out. Friday 12th July 1940 was known as Black Friday in Aberdeen for many years afterwards because of the bomb damage caused that day. Hall Russell shipyard was struck along with a nearby bar where many of the yard workers were spending their lunch killing 25 and injuring close to 100 men, according to council records. Several other areas in the city also received damage with further loss of life. As you can imagine, this was a memorable event for Aberdonians and growing up, I often had the tree the Heinkel had hit pointed out to me. Right enough, it did have a bit of a lean and a truncated look to it. So when I saw that this group build was coming up, I decided that I would build the doomed machine as it might have appeared before setting out on its last flight. To my surprise, I discovered that this would not be the first time 1H+FT has appeared on Britmodeller. @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies built this very aircraft here and I will be brazenly appropriating some of his findings such as the fact that the aircraft appeared to be carrying its full serial on the underside of its wings. As Jamie says in his build, there doesn't seem to be much information available about this aircraft so much of this build will be based on hopefully not too wild surmise. I'll be building the ICM 1/48 He-111H-3 as one of the few things about this incident there seems to be much consensus on is that the Heinkel was indeed an H-3 and this was the only model of that version I could find readily available. I'll be building it OOB apart from some PE harnesses. Finally, a personal note. Seconds before plunging into the ice rink, the Heinkel narrowly missed the houses of the Ruthrieston area of the city. At the time there was speculation that Lt Huck had made heroic efforts to avoid the houses, though others maintained that he was instead trying to reach the open fields beyond the ice rink or had mistaken the rink for a factory and had decided to make the ultimate sacrifice for the Fatherland. It's equally likely that Lt. Huck had been killed or disabled by that point and the aircraft was out of control. Whatever the truth of this, the fact is that my mother, who would have been 7 at the time, was living in one of the houses under to the doomed aircraft's flight path and a small alteration in its course might have resulted in me never existing at all, a small matter in the great scheme of things but pretty important to me. Makes you think. More soon, Craig.
  4. ICM is to release in Q1 2020 a 1/48th Heinkel He-111Z-1 “Zwilling", WWII German Glider Tug kit - ref. 48260 Source: https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/ICM48260 V.P.
  5. Hi Comrades! Here is my recently finished Heinkel-111. It's old but good Monogram kit (Revell boxing) with Eduard brass, mix of Kagero and Peddinghaus decals, national insignia painted with Montex masks. The main issue of the Monogram kit is inappropriate gondola configuration with blind forward end. I ignored it, sorry. After completing the model, I ordered ICM kit of H-20 and found a great additional clear part for the gondola - so sad for me... Unneeded Lofte gunsight window was faired over, some other modifications made to the undercarriage. I was unable to find the photo of the prototype, but always wanted this one - now I have it! Here are some pictures of interior (brass+scratch) And the complete model Hope You like it and thanks for looking!
  6. Hi! Is it possible that some He-111Hs were intended for desert use and received factory camouflage of RLM 79 instead of standard RLM 70/71? Thanks in advance
  7. *Now finished* - RFI: Half way through but is anyone interested in seeing the remainder of this? It's been on the go for months and has been a of a build...
  8. Hey guys, So i'm working up to a build here for when I get back, I'm gonna do the Revellgawa 1/72 He-111 H6. I wanted to do something a bit different so I got the Xtradecal set for it, annoyingly, for the scheme I want to do there's no paint guides and I can't find anything online. I was wondering if you guys could give help? That is the old kite I want to do. I am totally fine just winging it with some artistic license on the top surfaces of the wings but if anyone knows of any decent reference photos I would really appreciate the help! Cheers
  9. Gentlemen and Ladies. May I present you with my take on Hasegawa's Heinkel He-111P2 from KG55. She's OOB with a few very small scratch built bits in the cockpit and on the outside. The paints are a halfords rattle can primer, citadel nuln oil wash for the preshading, Vallejo model color for the camouflage and citadel satin for the top coat. Everything apart from the primer and varnish was applied with a hairy stick and this was my first attempt at preshading with a brush, inspired by my friend Stix. The build has been fun most of the time, although I had some real issues with the under carriage and I'm really annoyed that I missed the internal framing on the canopy before I closed it up. There's a WIP thread here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234956005-hasegawa-he-111p-172-finished/ You'll notice that the tail has been slightly doctored. The kit provides swastikas but, as I explain in the WIP my girlfriend's grandmother was an Austrian Jew whose entire family were murdered by the Nazis during the war and at her request I don't display swastikas in our home. So, without further ado, here she is. I'm generally pleased with how she came out bit as always, criticism and suggestions are actively encouraged. Damn you photobucket! Thanks for watching. Richard
  10. I've finally completed my He-111, hope you enjoy the photo's Comments always welcome, Thanks for looking, Colin
  11. I am currently working on Monogram's 1/48 HE-111, backdating to an early H-2, from the Battle of Britain. I'm using Lion Roar belts, Mike Grant inst. decals, Griffon photoetch gunsites, and Koster's resin HE-111 "early exhaust's", all else is scratch built. I've scratch built a radio compartment interior, based on photos and plans in Aero Detail #18, and added details in the cockpit. Opened up the sliding panel for access to the bombsite, scratch built a new pilots inst. panel (the kit on is wrong - it's for an H-20) and opened the sliding roof hatch and pop up windshield. Since the sliding panel is open, I've had to scratch build a Lofte 7d bombsite (upper right, below) The engines also require some work, I've extended the supercharger intakes, oil cooler intakes and exhaust, and made screens and coolers out of fine mesh. The rad intakes required reprofiling (for some reason Monogram made them square and sharp edged) and made rads out of fine mesh and stretched sprue, and the lower cowl also needed reprofiling (also square for some reason) unmodified on right: Still lots of work to do, but it's starting to look like a 111. Thanks for looking, Colin
  12. I bought this kit a while back when i saw it in the LHS for much lower than retail because it had ever so slight box damage. Now that I have finished off most everything else on my bench, I thought that i could get a start on it. I didnt realize until I opened up the box just how big it really was. The fuselage halves are each bigger than any model i've ever built. This could be an interesting introduction th 1:32 scale modeling... I plan on doing it copletely OOB with the scheme on the front of the box. The first update will be coming soon.
