  1. Hi all, I have recently been trying to find 1:72 / 1:48 Gripen C kits. I already have a post about the 1:72 kits but I’m still wondering what the best 1:48 JAS39c Gripen kit is, I have been looking at the KittyHawk kit as it looks to be the best however they seem like a very hard to find kit. Are there any other brands? Thanks, James
  2. Hiya I have the Gripen to build and I intend to paint it with the grey splinter camo, even though that's probably the ‘e’ version and this is an ‘a’ well hohum. I have fallen in love with the paint scheme and my mind is set.....
  3. While building the Revell JAS 39C Gripen in the GB, I was inspired to restart on some shelf queens as well. First a conversion of the Italeri JAS 39A kit in to the second protoype. The second prototype had an analogue instrument setup for the tests so I had made a new instrument panel for it. When I left the build years ago I was planning for the parachute installation (at least what I think it is). I have glued a piece of sprue and some plastic pieces to stabilize it while building. This is the the configuration for the spin tests. I wanted to build the equipment as it will alter the look of the plane.
  4. Hi fellow modellers Here I present italeri’s 1:48 JAS 39 Gripen (2638) in Czech Air Force Tiger Markings Well I started this kit sometime back in 2019/2020 and very nearly had it finished but had a disaster when I noticed the paint had cracked mainly on both upper wings (1st picture) so it has sat on my shelf of doom ever since. I decided that I wanted to get it rectified and finished so back on the bench it went at the start of the new year and after sanding both upper wings back to plastic then re-spraying and painting up the rest of the parts that wasn’t finished when I started this kit. I certainly can’t say I enjoyed this build but I do like to challenge myself which doesn’t always pay off but hay-ho that’s modelling I suppose. not my best build by a long way the tiger markings on the fuel tanks came from a couple of model alliance decals arctic tigers sheets intended for use on F-18’s so these are not technically correct. aftermarket used . CMK resin Cockpit including FOD guards (4148) Maestro Models conversions resin fuel tanks (K4806) Maestro models photo etched Ladder (MMP4806) Model-CZ decals (MCZA4807) Paints used MR hobby aqueous and Tamiya Acrylics thanks for looking happy modelling

  6. As well as this kit, I also had the much newer Revell kit of the Gripen C in the stash. But I'm a glutton for punishment. I bought this kit at an air show in Galway about 20 years ago.
  7. Another stripey jet completed & ready show... This is another scheme that I've really wanted to do. So after a couple of years enquiring & looking I found that JBR decals on facebook. They had re-released this decal sheet at the end of June. Looked like his run of 1/72 decals were really popular as they've already sold out. Nicely laser printed tail fin & canard markings & the fuselage & wing markings are screen printed. Very thin, but with some patience went down very nicely. Revell 1/72 Saab JAS-39C 9234 JBR Decals "100 Years of the Czech Air Force 2018 NATO Tiger Meet" As with my last Czech Gripen, the only other aftermarket used were Master brass pitot's. Painted using Hataka acrylics & Xtracrylic Matt plus Mig panel line wash & Tamiya weathering powders. And a couple of pics of the two Czech Tiger gripens together. Thanks for looking! Martin
  8. JAS-39 Gripen | 1/72 | Revell F10 Wing Ängelholm, Swedish Air Force 1999 Finished 3/28/2020. I'm back after a few months absence. I didn't model for a couple months because I just couldn't get into it. I love the Gripen -- While it's basically the same thing as the Rafael and the Eurofighter Typhoon, I think it looks the most elegant of the three. I've had this kit in the stash for a long time -- the copyright date on the instructions is 2000, which must've been when I got it because I had a 15 year hiatus starting in 2001. This kit was terrific. Well designed and accurate. I didn't have any difficulties during the build. I was lucky enough to find a detailed article about the Gripen written in 2000 by IPMS Stockholm (https://www.ipmsstockholm.se/home/jas-39-gripen-in-detail-part-1/). It had great detail shots and a lot of good information I would've otherwise missed. For instance: most of the photos I found on the internet were recent, which shows the Gripen with white undercarriage, but according to the article, early Gripens had the undercarriage the same color as the underside (which made my life a lot easier! ). The other notable thing is that the Swedes keep the Gripen pretty clean, so weathering was minimal, except for a couple characteristic stains related to the APU, that are almost always there. Also, I am not a "panel line preshading" guy -- unless I can see it in a reference photo, I won't do it. In this case the panels behind the cockpit in almost all of the photos I found were definitely stained around the edges to varying degrees. I don't know why that may be, but I wonder if it is lubricant from the fasteners? I found similar stains on the sides of the F-4 near the wing root (as seen in my F-4 build) in most pictures and when I got close to one in a museum, I saw they were oily stains from the lubricant used on the panel fasteners. No WIP for this build Finishing: Seam filling with Super Glue Paints: Mr. Surfacer 1500 black > Mr. Color 337 (FS35237) top > Mr. Color 308 (FS36375) bottom Alclad Aqua Gloss Clear coat > Alclad Duraluminum (engine) > Testors spray dull coat (Decanted) for final coat Weathering/Wear: Tamiya weathering pastels (black) > oil staining and dirt streaks with Black and Burnt Umber oil paints I bought SBS after market wheels, although the kit wheels weren't too bad. Hard to see, but I scratch-built an ejection seat handle Tried to keep weathering minimal, but accurate to my reference photos There was only one major seam that had to be dealt with, and that was at the base of the vertical stabilizer Thanks for looking! Hope you enjoy -- questions and comments always welcomed!
  9. Here are a couple of photos of my Italeri 1/48th Saab JAS-39A Gripen. I haven't been spending much time on it lately, maybe a few minutes every couple of days painting something on the seat or the cockpit. Finally got to where I could put the big parts together. I'll add a little filler along some of the seams, but overall it went together pretty well. Easier than the Revell Eurofighter Typhoon. I plan on painting it up as a Swedish line jet with kit decals. Planned on straight out of the box but the long nose pitot is broken on the sprue, so I'll replace it with a blunted needle or something. Hopefully the one on the vertical tail will survive. I'll probably tape a piece of index card folded over it to try to protect it. I really don't want to spend the money on the brass pitot tubes and the AOA probe. The intakes look like there are big seams open, but it's bleed over of the black paint at the aft of the intake under the part. It's really a good fit. In the background is my G.I. Joe Astrolocker from about 1969 or so. It's been my model supply storage box since college. That's when I put the ROTC sticker on it. The exhaust areas aft of the cockpit look uneven. I think it's a combination of paint on the inside and the angle of the photo. They are lined up closer on the model.
  10. Hello all! I have been browsing Britmodeller for a couple of years while I was gathering up my modern European jet kits. I have been building mostly 1/48th USAF kits but the European jets are so cool looking and I have some history with a couple. Got the Draken, Gripen, Typhoon, Rafale, Mirage 2000, and a couple of Tornados (IDS and ADV) lined up to build. I started with the Revell Germany 1/48th Eurofighter Typhoon and got to the painting stage when I broke the canopy in half trying to get the mold line off. Revell did send me a replacement but I did not get back to it yet. While waiting on the canopy I started the Italeri 1/48th JAS-39A Gripen. I have done several searches on this and other web sites for cockpit color info but am not finding everything. I will be doing this one as a Swedich -39A single seater. Basically keeping it out of the box with no aftermarket. Question - What color are the cockpit floor and sidewalls? I couldn't find that many photos of actual aircraft cockpits. I found a few simulator and computer graphic representations, but those can't be trusted. A couple of the photos that appear to be actual cockpits show the sidewalls to be black rather than light gray. Is this correct - black sidewalls? None of the photos show the cockpit floor clearly and it just looks dark down there. One photo hints that it may be black also. Thanks for your help. In my many searches on this and other forums many of the photos are no longer displayed due to Photobucket's policy change last year. I suspect that my questions here, and those to come, were probably answered and illustrated in the past but the photos are no longer displayed.
  11. JAS-39D upgrade sets for Revell kit 1:72 Eduard Whilst not quite as prolific as they once were, Revell are still capable of producing fine kits. Their recent JAS-39C/D Gripen is one such example. Now, just as Revell followed the release of their JAS-39C with the two-seater D model, Eduard have released a set of photo etched parts for the trainer variant. In usual Eduard style, the first set is divided into two frets. The first is a self-adhesive, pre-painted jobbie that focuses mainly on the cockpit, while the second is a plain brass fret. Amongst the items on the first fret are lots of extra details for the kit's ejector seats, including seat cushions, harnesses, pull handles and details for the head box. Also included on this fret are one-piece instrument panels as well as details for the side consoles and rudder pedals. On the unpainted fret are parts for the rest of the airframe, including a range of details for the main and nose landing gear bays, doors, and parts for the landing gear itself such as brake lines and scissor links. The flame holder for the engine afterburner is included too, as is a new lining for the inside of the jet exhaust. Also included are bits and bobs for the airbrakes, missile rails and IFR probe. Nice bonus features include FOD guards for the engine intakes and a hinge for the cockpit canopy. Conclusion These are neat sets from Eduard which will make a noticeable difference to the basic kit. 12. Revell Saab JAS-39C is released now. But the test builders already have a double seat trainer variant JAS-39D: http://modelforum.cz/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=90083&p=1680379&hilit=gripen#p1680396 JAS-39D cockpit: http://modelforum.cz/download/file.php?id=1036328 When will be released?

  14. Kittyhawks amazing scale 48 Gripen It has been written a lot about Kittyhawks Gripen kit. Unfortunately, also of a lot of negative by which a wrong picture originates from this, actually, nice kit. One finds a really good one and one of the best Reviews I could explore, here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234941002-jas-39ac-gripen-148-kitty-hawk/?hl=%2Bsaab+%2Bgripen+%2Bkittyhawk It is a kit of the new generation, with the quite normal positive and negative points like all other new kits also. In the construction report I will mention the really relevant small mistakes I discovered. I have used the following books as references: Saab Gripen, Author: Gerard Keijsper JAS-39 Gripen Swedish Multirole Fighter, Author: Slavomir Goldemund Saab JAS 39 Gripen colours & markings, Author: Michal Ovčáčík, Karel Susa How with most kits for different versions are intended, should one not work strictly after constructriction manual. As by the construction of Ju 88 of Dragon, or by the construction of the Mosquito wings with separate wingtips of Tamiya, one must deviate from the construction manual to avoid unnecessary repairs. Also with the Gripen one should stick together the fuselage halves separately. As one can see, I have already cut out behind the cockpit the cover of the pressuration/air-conditioning unit. I can recommend the cockpit of Aires very much. The details are not only fine but also perfectly faithful. The seat belts are added as photoetched parts. On heating up the photoetched parts, the seatbelts can be brought very well in form. The avionic bays of Aires which should be accommodated later behind the fuselage nose. I like the bright colours with those the modern airplanes nowadays are painted. Please, do not surprise. . . .but I never work really strictly after construction manuals. Mostly I build complete sub-groups sometime occasionally. According to mood. . . as well as with the weapons. The Maverick missiles are from Eduard. Actually, already a model in the model. Two elegant and slender Iris-T missiles from the kit, got a 1mm light lens (AK-Interactive) in the nose built-in. And here is the first however small mistake which I found in the kit. There is only one anti-ship missile RB15S in the kit (but rather one, than none). Before fuselage halves are clued together, must be still built the inflight refueling pipe, the undercarriage and airbrake bays. In the meantime, fuselage halves have been glued, and the pressuration/air-conditioning unit have been built up from plastic sheet. One finds high-class photos in the second book of my abovementioned book list.
  15. Hello Gents, I’d like to hear Your thoughts and maybe even some help on building Swedish SAAB JAS-39 Gripen. First things first. Sorry for my English. It’s not my native language, but I’ll try my best. The aircraft I’d like to build is more known as a Gripen Demonstrator (picture bellow). If I understood correctly it's NG version. So, the here comes the questions: What are the major differences from version B/D? Is it requires a lot of rework and modifications? I can’t find good pictures of twin seater cockpit. Where can I get Meteor missiles? Cause at the moment it seems like only Revell Typhoon got them. Maybe someone has some more detailed pictures of the right side of the airframe closer to the speed brakes, cause I need to identify logos and the names of the companies for custom made deacals? Please, let me know, what You think and what recommendations You've got. Looking forward to hear from You, guys! Kind regards, Edgaras
  16. JAS-39 Gripen Wheels - For The Revell Kit 1:72 Eduard Brassin This set from Eduard in their brassin range is a direct replacement for the kit wheel. These are well moulded on small pour blocks and should enhance the look of your kit. The set also inclused a set of wheel masks to help paint the wheels correctly Conclusion Wheels can be one area which let a kit down, in a lot of cases these resin replacements can make a difference, this is helped by the masks to paint them. Recomended. Review samples courtesy of

  19. The UK Empire Test Pilot School uses a single SAAB Gripen apparently to train pilots.... The airplane has a blue vertical stabilizer, with a gold griffin or lion above the initials ETPS... Can anyone tell me if the symbol represents the type of airplane... or the school...? Thanks....
  20. Here's my attempt at Italeri's 1/48 Gripen, Not bad kit, simple cockpit that wous souped up with ED PE. All the rest is as it arrives in the box. I took the liberty and did the fuel tank in tiger scheme as I've seen pix of czech Gripens with it and it adds just that bit of colour to the "boring" gray scheme. So enough babbling here she goes.. I know it's missing the nose pitot. We just got back from the annuals here and pitot was the only casualty. So will get to creating one in the future.
  21. Hi all Can anyone steer me towards a few more pics of Saab Gripens in the initial early scheme like this A Google search didn't bring up many. I'm not after many, just a few to guide me through the painting process, the Airfix instructions are not the best Cheers Chris
  22. I thought I would build this before the Revell new tool comes out and makes it redundant and liable to languish in the stash for ever! Its built straight oob with the kit decals which were great. Thanks for looking!
